Its commuter time, rush hour here in new york city. Weve learned theres a commuter train in new jersey that crashed into the platform. This is right across the river from manhattan, new york city. Its about 2 1 2 miles from where we are. That train went through the end of the tracks right into the terminal building. Traveling at what it looks like a pretty high rate of speed. Nbcs rehema ellis is there. What can you tell us . What i can tell you is that emergency vehicles are still rushing to the scene. Most of the streets in the area have been blocked off. Ive been diverted around the exact entrance to the train, so im walking as we speak to try and get a better view of the damage. As youve been reporting, its a new jersey passenger train on its way into the hoboken station. Eyewitnesses have said what happened is that the train simply did not stop. It kept going and ran into the end of the platform and right into the reception area. We do not know at this point exactly how fast was this train going. We dont know how many passengers were on board the train or how many passengers were standing in the waiting area. But as you can imagine, this was around the 9 00 hour in the east coast here in hoboken, new jersey. So there had to be a lot of people. The question now becomes, one, the extent of the injuries, beyond the damage. Authorities are calling this a mass casualty incident, but we do not know yet whether everyone has been taken off of that train and whether all of the passengers who were inside waiting area, in the train reception area, have been removed from that area. As you point out, theres been extensive damage of the area and what theyre trying to do right now is assess the extent of the damage and the extent of the injuries. A number of people who may have been injured. Matt . Rehema, thank you very much. Lets talk to somebody who was on the train at the time. On the second train car when it crashed. He joins us on the phone. Sir, first of all, were so glad youre okay and able to speak to us. Can you tell us what you saw and what you experienced . Did it feel like the train had been trying to slow before the impact . No. Hi. It didnt slow down. It was at the usual speed. No one was looking out. Everyone was doing their thing. Next thing you know, were plowing into the platform. Can you hear us . I can. Okay. If you can do me a favor, try to shield the phone a little bit. Were getting a lot of wind noise. Yeah, im sorry. And so how fast would you say the train was traveling . It was at its normal speed. The train doesnt go that fast. It was at its usual speed. The only thing i noticed was that it just kept going. I was thrown out of my seat. App lot of people were thrown out of their seat. Next thing you know, were plowing through something, probably the pillars over there. And when it came to a stop, i could see part of the roof two feet from me. I was actually at the end of the first car, between the first and second car. Did you see a lot of injuries . Were there people that appeared to be hurt . Yes. I even saw a woman who was thrown off, i think, and she was under part of the roof. People, probably seven or eight people, they tried to pick that piece up to get her out. Im pretty sure she was badly wounded. So did it appear to you that most of the injured were on the train or on the platform when that train came barrelling in . So the place where the first car hit on the platform is usually a busy walkway because its right next to the entrance. So im not sure if something happened to people over there, but the people in the first car were definitely there were a lot of injuries there. I saw a lot of people get out, but several people had injuries. Real quickly, the engineer, was there any loud speaker announcement to brace for impact . Was there any warning whatsoever . No warning at all. No warning. What a terrifying morning for you and your fellow passengers. Thank you for sharing your time with us and we wish you the best, sir. Thank you. All right. Nbcs tom costello joins us now with what hes learning about the crash and the investigation. Tom, its early. We dont know whether this is mechanical failure, human error, or Something Else. No, thats absolutely right. The priority, as you would expect, is to not only evacuate everybody off of those trains, treat the injured, and try to preserve the evidence as fast as they can. But one concern automatically is that federal authorities are telling us that this line of track on the new Jersey Transit system does not have positive train control. Thats the automatic braking system that will slow and stop a train if it is approaching an area that is either congested or there is a slow down speed limit or something on the tracks. This does not have it. You may recall in the case of chatworth, california, a number of years ago, 20plus people were killed. That train did not have positive train control. The engineer was distracted. They since put positive train control on those train systems out in california. They have been working hard to put it on the entire northeast corridor, but not on this new jersey stretch of track. Thats going to be a very big part of the investigation. Yeah, but tom, even without that technology, is there nothing in place on a track as it gets close to the end of a track that would slow a train if it was approaching too quickly . It is literally up to the engineer to do his or her job, abide by the speed limit signs, and hopefully abide by their training because they should know where they are at all times and know that track by heart. Listen, heres the other thing. I used to travel that route every single day going into the city when i lived in new jersey. And that is usually a crawl into hoboken. Its not a fast train into hoboken. Youre crawling the last stretch. So for this train to be moving that fast into the train station is a real puzzle this morning. I think among the many concerns people have is whether the engineer suffered some sort of a medical issue or was distracted or what happened because this train moved in there so fast. All right. Tom, by the way, we should mention that wnbc, our local affiliate here in new york, now reporting one person has died, up to a hundred people injured. Tom, thank you very much. Tom, thanks. Lets go to an employee, actually, of nbc and was also on that train. Good morning. How are you doing . Good morning. A little shaken up. Where were you on the train . I was on the platform oh. Walking. It was a normal commute turned to a nightmare. The sounds of screeching and people yelling run. Thank god that person yelled run. I missed it by ten seconds. People were falling over each other. It felt like i was running for my life. I just ran as fast as i could, and when i looked back and saw injured people and blood and the ceiling collapsed, water gushing down. The exit by the platform that we were at, people were running and falling. There was a man with a toddler over his shoulders and his wife walking in front of me. They fell as they ran. Me and some other people helped them up to run out, and we got out of the building as we saw it was collapsing. We didnt know what was going on at that point. Did you feel have a sense of how fast that train was going at the time of impact . Not sure how fast it was going. Normally the platform is really busy and the trains arent usually going fast. You dont hear that screeching. The train was derailing down on people. People were running for their lives. It was just a lot of chaos going on. Im just grateful somebody behind me yelled to run. I had my headphones on. Going forward, i wont have my headphones on as im commuting, just to be aware of whats going on. Were happy youre okay. We thank you for joining us. Thank you. Thank you. The new Jersey Medical examiner now confirming at least one death in this accident. Again, confirming between 75 and 100 people have been injured. Were going to have the latest throughout the morning. Another big story were following, the search for a motive in that Elementary School shooting in south carolina. A teenager suspected of fatally shooting his father at home and then opening fire at the school where two students and a teacher were wounded. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is there for us. Gabe, good morning. Reporter good morning. Overnight, the suspected gunman was questioned at length, and were hearing incredible stories of heroism and survival. It was an unarmed volunteer firefighter who took the suspect down and teachers who prevented him from getting inside the building. This morning a desperate search for a motive after shots rang out at recess. Townville school road, law enforcement. Reporter at townville elementary in south carolina, police say a 14yearold opened fire, wounding two students and a teacher before an unarmed volunteer firefighter stepped in and tackled him. We got a gun on the playground. Were going to try to keep everyone away from here. Reporter first police say the teenager shot his father at a home two miles away, then at 1 44 p. M. They say he called his grandmother in tears. She could not make out what he was saying because he was crying and upset. Reporter a minute later, police say the young gunman had already given up to the schools parking lot, near the playground, gotten out, walked toward the school, and started shooting. The superintendent says one class was at recess. A teacher, megan holingsworth, was hit in the shoulder. She and other employees rushed students inside and locked the doors. Courage. I mean, these teachers and Staff Members love those children. They put their lives on the line to protect them. Reporter this morning, 6yearold jacob hull is in Critical Condition after being shot in the leg. The teacher and another student who were injured have been treated and released. What do investigators think is the motive here . We really dont have we dont have any information right now. Reporter this Community Shaken as terrified parents scrambled to pick up their kids. Jamie merediths daughter is in kindergart kindergarten. She just told me they went to the bathroom. Im just so scared. I dont even want her to go to school now. Reporter police have not identified the 14yearold suspect, only saying hes home schooled. Right now its unclear what his connection was to this school. Classes remain canceled for the rest of the week, and authorities are crediting active shooter drills theyve practiced before with saving lives. Matt and savannah . Wow. And our latest nbc News Survey Monkey poll has clinton emerging as the winner of the first debate. 52 of likely voters said she won. 21 going with trump. 26 saying neither candidate won. Cal fire says close to 3,900 acres burned, nearly doubling in size since yesterday when the fire actually seemed to be slowing down. Evacuations have been lifted for some residents. People on the Santa Cruz County side have been allowed home. On the Santa Clara County side, however, evacuations remain in effect. The fire is now more than 20 contained. At least seven structures including one home have been destroyed. You see the fire drops continue there as well. Want to check the forecast for today. Heres matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie. Its 10 30 here on the east coast, 7 30 out west. This is an nbc news special report. Theres a chaotic scene unfolding right now in hoboken, new jersey. A new Jersey Transit train crashing into the terminal there. At least three people confirmed dead, more than 100 others injured. Were told that a number of them are critically injured. This of course happened at the height of rush hour earlier this morning. Were already seeing images of terrible destruction. Witnesses are speaking out this morning and sharing stories of chaos and panic. Everything was typical. It was a little crowded. There wasnt enough space for everyone to get into the first car, so fortunately i was stuck in the middle. Myself and about six other people were in between the cars. We approached the station, and the train just felt like it never stopped. It didnt slow down. It didnt it didnt brake. I mean, i dont know for sure if it didnt brake or what was happening. So as soon as the train just kept going, there was the lights shut off. People started yelling. And the people that were standing in between on the other side, on the second in the second car, getting ready to come out of that door, were thrown on to our side. A young lady actually that was thrown from that, her legs caught between the doors just as soon as it was about to make that full stop. But we were able to pull her up fortunately, and the gentleman in front of me was helping other people, but he had a gash in his forehead. He hadnt known he was bleeding. I didnt fall, fortunately, because there were people in front of me. You can hear the fear in her voice. One of the survivors. At least three dead, 100 injured in this train crash this morning. And that view from above gives you a really good idea of what this situation is. This isnt a through station. This is a terminal. These tracks come to an end at that specific point in hoboken. If a train comes in and does not stop, it goes off the end of the track, in this case right into the terminal building. While were already hearing these differing accounts of how much, if any, the train had slowed, lets go to our correspondent rehema ellis, our correspondent. What are you hearing . Good morning. Were standing in what police are calling a staging area. I can see the waiting room of the terminal where that train crashed into. There are emergency vehicles everywhere, emergency First Responders are all around, trying to secure this area in terms of getting the injured away from the area. As youve pointed out, witnesses, some of them, passengers on this train were able towalk walk away, others w not. I spoke to one woman in the third car of the train. She said it happened really fast. She said everybody in the third car was jolted. Some people were standing because they were about to get off the train. And she said it was crazy. People were bleeding and shaking and crying. And she said she was able to brace herself because she was still sitting, so she put her hands on the backseat of the seat in front of her, and she was jolted in place. She was able to walk away from this. Her concern, she said, is that so many other people may not have been able to walk away. The first thing she did when she got out of the car, she said she called her loved ones to let them know she was okay. But she is terribly shaken and grateful for the fact she was able to walk away from this, savannah. As she pointed out, so many others were not. We are still waiting for a press briefing here. Were told a short time from now, officials will give us more information on the extent of this accident. We dont know how fast the train was going, but we do know that it was approaching this terminal because this is the last stop, as matt was saying. This is where people are to get off. Some of them were standing, and that made it even worse. This young woman said she felt that the people who were in the front car remember, she was in the third car. She felt that people in the front car may have taken the biggest of the burden in terms of the injuries. Savannah . And there may have been people on the platform as well right there. Ra h rehema, thank you very much. Tom costello going to look at the investigation side. Obviously first they take care of the injured, then figure out what happened. I guess the priority, if the engineer survived the impact, would be to talk to that person. Thats absolutely right. What was he or she doing . Were they paying attention . What did they see . Was the equipment operating normally . I got to tell you, ive ridden this train many times. I used to live in new jersey and took that train into manhattan. To come in that fast into hoboken station i find to be rather strange because normally you crawl into hoboken station. Its a very slow snails pace. So why was this train traveling so fast that it literally rammed right into the station and caused such terrible structural damage and of course so many people injured and potentially killed. We do also know that this line on new Jersey Transit does not have that automatic braking system called positive train control. Thats been a big issue, as you know, for the last dozen years or so following major train crashes, really, from california to new york. But on the new Jersey Transit line n that stretch anyway, no positive train control. So clearly this will probably ramp up the discussion about whether that should have been in place. But you have to wonder, why would the engineer be realizing as he or she was coming into that station and having presumably done this many times before, that youve got to slow down. There are many warning signs and speed signs. And by the way, nobody on the platform that weve heard from we heard from a witness a second ago said there was any horn blaring or warning from that train. As matt points out, the priority would be to speak to the engineer, if that is possible. Also, these trains have what is referred to as a black box, dont they, tom . They absolutely do. On many of these trains now, i cannot speak to specifically what equipment was on this particular train. But many trains do have the equivalent of a black box that allow them to immediately know the speed, whether there were any brakes applied, what the speed was coming out or going into a turn, all of that is going to be critically important. Pilots say passengers get violent not only on the ground but at altitude. Hey, ho. Reporter from an on board fight at lax to a drunk passenger assaulting a Flight Attendant in charlotte. Reporter bad behavior on the ground and in the skies has become a serious problem. An International Airlines groups reporting 1500 in 2015, nearly 11,000 cases world wide, one for every 1200 flights cussing, screaming, spiting. Even urinating and refusing to obey Flight Attendants. 11 of cases got physical last year. Nearly a quarter involved drugs or alcohol. Its exhausting at times to deescalate conflicts every single day when we go to work. Its also become a bigger part of our job, there are fewer of us on board. Part of the problem, more passengers, less space. Just like a ski resort, the effects of alcohol are magnified at altitude. Closer to home were keeping an eye on the loma wildfire burning above the mountains in los gatos. Now 20 contained. A San Francisco car owner has now had her car stolen five different times. This morning she could still get in and tool around in it. On our home page, the back story. Another update in half an hour. It is 8 00 on the west coast on today we have new information in that breaking news out of hoboken, new jersey, a transit train barreling into the station during the busy morning commute hours. At least three people are dead, more than 100 others injured. Officials just starting to counseled the toll there. And some eyewitnesses, several saying the train simply didnt slow down before it got to the end of the track. Investigators are now going to try to find out why that happened. Reporter im just a few yards away from the terminal. Just a few yards away from the terminal where the train crashed into the station. Standing with me is tom, he was in the terminal at the time it came in. What did it sound like . A very loud crashing noise. You no he, i was in the Customer Service Office Asking for some information. I heard the crash, immediately ran out, saw that the train had gone through the terminal. Dyspeople trying to get off the train. I saw folks running away from the train that were on the platform. There were folks trying to get out of the train through the windows, through the doors. Reporter were they injured . There were some injuries. Reporter can you describe the injuries . All types. Folks were bleeding from the head, the face. Folks got off the train and they couldnt walk. You had very good response by the Port Authority people, the transit people, the police department. They were there very quickly to help. I myself tried to get folks into the seating area that were injured, that were struggling with what was going on. Reporter what was going through your head . What did you think had happened at that point that caused this crash . I dont know what had caused it. I obviously knew by looking at the train where the train wound up, it didnt belong there. It never stopped coming into the terminal. A portion of the terminal roof had collapsed down basically on top and next to the train. So it was definitely a bad accident that occurred. Reporter can you say how many people you saw trying to scramble off the train . I cant give any kind of number. Its one of the moments earp trying to help folks that were walking towards you who were dazed or shocked, bleeding, not able to walk on their own, just helping until medical attention could get to them. Reporter thank you very much. I talked to a woman who was in the third car of the train. She had she was sitting with people who were standing at the time of the crash, and that some of them got jostled around in the train. She did not, because she was able to brake herself guess the back of the seat. She said service frightening. Some people were crying, some people limping, trying to get off the train. This is a train she takes all the time and it will be a time shell never forget. Authorities are trying to assess. Certainly the extent of all the damages. Were not certain if everyone has been taken out of the train yet, if everyone has been removed from the platform. Were waiting for authorities to come to this area, the press briefing area to give us information as to exactly what has happened here, and more information on how many people were on the platform, and how many people on the train, and about those who did not get off who did not make it off. Were just starting to learn about what may have caused that, and of course the big question at this hour, matt, is whether or not the engineer survived and whether or not officials have been able to talk to him. Tom coastello is headed to te scene right now. You talked to us earlier and said you dont believe this section of track has the train control system technology. Isnt there something called for lack of a better term, a dead mans pedal in the engineers compartment, where if something happens medically to that person and that engineer becomes incapacitated, the foot and pressure comes off the pedal and it slows the train . Absolutely. I think that addings to the mystery here. Youre absolutely right. The engineer has to have his foot on the pedal, his weight on the dead mans switch or pedal, the idea being if he has a heart attack and falls over, then the weight shifts off the pedal and the train would come to a stop. However, if he slumps forward, its possible he could till maintain the weight on the pedal. All the more reason why advocates say its critical that these trains day put in positive train control, and we know there was no positive train control on this particular stretch of new Jersey Transit. In fact, new Jersey Transit has to my knowledge not implemented it systemwide and theyre a bit behind in trying to implement it. I would make this point. I have gone into that train sounds like we may have just lost tom costello. Well try to get him back. Another thing, savannah, it starts to sound way too early to speculate, but sounds more of a problem with the engineer. If its a mechanical situation, you would think that the engineer would have at least a second or two to hit the horn, try to warn people on that platform and in the train through a loudspeaker announcement that something bad was about to happen. The person we heard from who was on the train said they didnt hear anything like that. Nobody that we have talked to or heard from on the platform has mentioned anything about the horn blaring on that train as it approached the terminal. Plus its a commuter train. One wouldnt expect it traveling at a high rate of speed and slamming on the brakes at the moment. Presumably it will start a slowdown process. If there were some kind of problem, hopefully an engineer would have the chance to warn passengers, sound the horn, call for help. We just dont know what happened. You talk about speed. I was listening to our local affiliate interview a gentleman, i think it was railroad age magazine he said you have to keep in mind they weigh enormous amounts. Even 10, 15, 20 miles an hour, which when you think of trains traveling up the northeast corridor is not that fast, but with that weight, it takes a long time to slow that train down. If it were traveling 15 miles an hour and got to the track bumper at the end of the track, it would go right through that. There are reports that perhaps this train came to a rest 100 or so feet beyond that. That bumper probably doesnt envision the train traveling at a high rate of speed. A short time ago we received an update on the loma wildfire burning in the santa cruz mountains. Cal fire says close to 3900 acres have burned. It nearly doubled in size since yesterday when the fire seemed to slow down. Evacuations have been lifted for some residents. People who live in the Santa Cruz County side have been allowed back home. On the santa clara side evacuations remain in effect. The fire is about 22 contained. At least seven structures including one home have been destroyed. A tough fight for firefighters there. What about on the morning commute . Is it a trough drive . Especially in the south bay. You see the Speed Sensors and northbound routes through san jose continue to be a tough drive. 85, 87, 101 where the earlier crash started slowing, that crash is cleared to the shoulder. We still have slowing and the build continues north over towards a series of crashes, citizens now cleared from the area around the san jose airport. But the backup continues because of the ripple effect. Over here the rest of the bay moves pretty well. In the north bay, still the big crash, a motorcycle westbound 80 redwood parkway. One big concern is this train and this system have positive train control. Our initial suggestion from a federal authorities is there is no positive train control. You may remember you and i could have had 18 months ago that occurred on a stretch of track and the train derailed in an excessive speed. Its essentially an oumt u all breaking system. It breaks the train if the engineer fales to do so as the train approaches the course, some sort of an immediate stop zone or slow down zone and in philadelphia, we have 200 plus injured and eight dead. We are hoping that we dont have anywhere near that scenario here. But the immediate concern that federal radio authorities have had for years is the slow rollout of this all breaking system. Why have various systems been slow to put it into effect when its been proven to save lives and in this early federal authority there is no no positive train control on this track. Keep in mind, there would have been people on that train and standing near that platform. This could be mechanical error, human error.
