We are looking at maybe one to two, possibly three inches of snow. It means heavy snow for maine right now. We are talking 9 to 12 inches for maine. If that second low strengthens, we could see some of the heavier snow slip down towards new york city. We are watching that. Now, heres the other storm we are watching. Sunday morning, this storm developed in texas. Its going to be the one that brings rain into the southwest. The track of the storm still uncertain. You look at the main models, the european model. The track is further to the south. Its mostly dry in the northeast. More of a midatlantic, southeastern atlantic coast. The american model, which did better in this last storm, had the trap further to the north. That means the heavier snow in the midatlantic into the east. An icy mix. We have to watch. Reporter good morning, savannah, Arizona Health Officials Say a thousand people may have been exposed in this state from the seven patients that had the virus here, including one woman that visited this childrens clinic where signs warn about the symptoms of measles. Because the virus is so contagious, it can survive a couple hours in the air or on surfaces. That one case may have put exponentially more people at risk. This morning, some 200 people who may have been exposed to measles are monitoring children and themselves, after people are visiting Health Care Centers in california and in arizona where they live. I have been informed it was an adult woman unvaccinated who exposed my child at a facility thats for high risk children. Its sad because this was preventible. Reporter its not just unvaccinated adults who could be spreading the highly contagious virus. A california man told Health Officials he thinks he was immunized when he was younger, but he became infected with the virus anyway. A single measles shot can be 95 effective. Two can boost it to 99 . The Measles Outbreak is a concern for everyone, adults and children, because its galloping from state to state. They called this mandate as you said sexist, shocking, annoying, frustrating, but say they do plan to comply. Its not just Sorority Women who are upset, though. We are learning the calls for change here grow louder. Misguided, offensive, a step backwards, a few of the reactions to a new directive aimed at the university of virginias 16 sororities, one that came from their national office, members told to steer clear of all involvement with campus fraternities this saturday. Nobody can come. Reporter greek life was reinstated at uva two weeks ago after being shut down in november. Reaction to a now discredited Rolling Stone article about an alleged rape at a uva frat house. Despite credibility issues with the article the school and students acknowledge the need for a broader discussion about safety and sexual violence. Few rules for greek event were created and agreed to as a condition of reinstating sororities and fraternities then the edict last week from National Sorority offices. I think its a huge step backwards in terms of basic womens rights so i was kind of offended. A petition was quickly created online. As of wednesday, it had more than 2,100 signatures. Instead of addressing rape and Sexual Assault at uva, it reads, the mandate perpetuates the idea that women are inferior, sexual objects. Uva law student Claire Collins didnt hesitate to add her name. I think they set out with the idea of security and safety foremost in mind. But the way it comes down seems like an extension of victim blaming mentality. Reporter in a statement to nbc news, the university of virginia said the mandate is quote a matter between the National Organizations and their local chapters. While the National Conference which represents sororities but did not issue the mandate, says it supports alternative options on saturday as a matter of safety. An approach that didnt sit well with jalen ross, especially in light of the new Safety Standards his fraternity helped create. We are throwing it out and assuming its as dangerous as it has ever been. Reporter now the Student Council has reached out to the National Leaders of all 16 sororities and asked him to come here to campus to have a discussion on friday and hopefully some sort of a resolution. The chairman told me hes heard from one of those organizations, but is confident they will hear from more before tomorrow. I do want to update you as well, savannah. We just heard further reaction this morning from the university of virginia. They are now saying they resist any implication uva students are deserving of special admonition saying the students have lived up to our tradition of student Self Governance and mentioning standards by all the greek organizations here, going on to say, quote, we have confidence to use good judgment, be mindful of one anothers safety and adhere to the Safety Practices developed by them. He was sent home thinking he had the flu. He never went back. His body weakened. He spent the last 12 years in and out of hospitals. The last thing he said to me when home. Reporter as in when am i going home . When doctors finally said he could. We were told to take him home and take care of him until he died. Reporter martin didnt die, according to records obtained by nbc news he was a medical mystery. He could barely control his movements. He no longer ate on his own and couldnt communicate. Doctors told them he had the intelligence of a threemonthold. I would in the morning get him dressed, feed him. Take him to the day care center. Reporter day after day for years, and then about four years in when martin was 16 he says something incredible happened. He woke up. But no one noticed. I gradually started to become aware of what was going on around me like something being completely out of focus, even grey and gradually coming into focus and the colors flooding back. Reporter martin speaks now with the help of a computer. What voice is this . This one is called peter. I changed a few years ago to it from paul which was an american voice. So you didnt want the american voice . But its a slow process, so we gave martin some of our questions in advance. Did you try to communicate with people that you were awake, that you were there . Yes, there were many times when i tried to reach out and even times when i to the i was making movements but what i thought and felt like a big movement was hardly perceivable. For so many years ago i was like a ghost. I could hear and see everything but it was like i wasnt there. I was inadvisable. He couldnt make his own choices, not even what tv show to watch im so happy youre the one for hours and hours i was sat in front of the tv with barney playing over and over. You were 16 17yearsold. That sounds like torture for anybody. He heard everything even something his mother once said in a moment of desperation. I said to him one day, i hope you die and i had no idea that he understood that. And im very very sorry i said it. While i was very sad and upset by what she said i understood where that was coming from. My mother often felt that she wasnt a good mom and couldnt take care of me. One of the hardest things for me was i couldnt tell her that no you are doing great. She is a good mother. Reporter he was after a new therapist saw signs of recognition in martins eyes his parents took him for testing. What we saw in the test is he can understand. Oh it was wonderful. Martin says he remembers nothing from his life up to age 12. He had to relearn to read and write and get around. He eventually went to college and as his mind grew stronger so did his body. He even drives now. But he did worry that he might never find love. I thought i have so much love pence of me and nobody to give it to. Reporter but then on new years day, 2008 he met a friend of his sisters jonah. Its such a nice smile. I love hes really attractive. Reporter martin it almost sounds like a love at first sight kind of story. Yes, it is hard to explain. You just know. I had heard people say, you always thought, yeah right, until it happened to me. Reporter they got married five years ago and now they want to have a baby. There it is, there is the grin. Reporter in his book martin wonders if people get so used to st. Croix they stop noticing it. I probably have a somewhat unique perspective on that. I appreciate things a lot t. Simple things like simply being able to have a conversation lying comfort ability and fear in experiencing something for the first time. To have someone to share your life. Simply to cherish life. So martin has regained enough use of his hands and arms he actually does book signings now. He gave his parents a book. It was inscribed to my amazing parents, thank you for all your love and support for for helping me become the man i am today. His parent told us that theyre just waiting to see what he does next. Harriet made more than 1,100, she donated her commission by the way. More than 2,000 for save the children in connecticut. A great organization. Lets first about Consignment Shops. I think a lot of people think when they have bigger pieces thats a good place to offload, but we also had small figurines and Little Things she was able to sell as well. Right. And consignment is generally best for your higherend items. Right. The nice thing about it is theyre going to do the work. But you want to understand what kind of a split youre going to get on the proceeds. Often Consignment Shops will pay 60 . Keep that in mind. Thats important to keep in mind. Okay. But you can do facebook groups which is something you did, right . Selling online . There are all these facebook groups that have sprung up. The best way to find one in your area just type in where you live and the word sale, and generally theyll pop up. What i like about them is theyre a closed group. You usually have to apply to get in, and theyre very local. So you dont have to worry as much about who youre dealing with. And people showing up at your house to pick some of the stuff up. You may want to meet in a thirdparty location anyway. And if youve got gadgets, you probably dont want the facebook group. You want to go to amazon or to next worth or sites that specialize in getting rid of gadgets. I know they send a lot of them to the Armed Services as well. And they fix them for them. Right. So they donate them in most cases. And thats the next category that were talking about. Theres a group called cell phones for soldiers that was started by a couple of kids a couple years ago. Theyll use the phones for parts even if theyre not working and theyll donate them. When youre donating, it is all about the Tax Deductions. So salvation army, goodwill both on their websites have guidelines for how much the Tax Deduction you can actually take. But i like this app called its deductible. You can use it for iphone and for android. It will track what you give away during the year. So its really easy. Paper trail. Before i ask you about the story line have you had an experience in your own life a personal experience where you witnessed racism unfolding in front of you, either overtly or suddenly that had an impact . I was born in compton, california 1955 i was there for seven, eight years. That word used to be lot. Never to somebodys face i never saw it ever used in anger, it was used in words like joke and im around that and i hear that extended family. You can use that myself. Its not appropriate and so yeah ive seen it. I never, ive seen other ones for sure. In the movie, your character does use the n word at one point. I know there were people in the project that were nervous. They urged you to shoot an alternate version of the screen. You stood your ground. There was talk about it. I funded it. There was no way, there is no point in dancing around this subject and the success of the movie is that the words do get said and in a normal break down of an argument you can walk away. People watch a twohour movie they see this word if they hang another five minutes, Something Else happens, this movie really ends up being about a lot of things that people i think wish theyd be able to say. In the process of being able to go out and promoting this movie, you do a lot of interviews in the last week or so you have been asked about certain subjects and you made your comments about american sniper and Michael Moore. You weighed in on deflateget a, without going into specific comments people can go online and find that. Do you find the older you get the more opinionated you are or you are willing to share those opinions . I think we will hear we will talk about black and white and someone will bring up Michael Moore or deflategate. I would talk about that when it comes to a movie that has a lot of value. Do you think it was the right thing to do to pull the ad or do you think this is part of their grand scheme . This was the plan all along . This wasnt the plan all along, no doubt. They put a lot into this ad. Theyve always pushed the envelope. Here they went for some real cuttingedge comedy. Theyve always been cutting edge. Theyve always been out there. You know what .
