But boy, that anniversary, 20th anniversary tomorrow of the killing of Nicole Brown Simpson and ron goldman. A lot of people are going to stop and think where they were when they heard that news. We have three people in our green room who will never forget that moment. Weve got kato kaelin, kim and fred goldman, the sister and father of victim ron goldman. Well look back with them, including, as you said, some of the evidence the jury never heard in that trial. Well get to that a little later. We want to start this morning with our top story, the fallout over House Majority leader eric cantor suffering a primary defeat that no one saw coming, not even the man who defeated him. Kelly odonnell is on capitol hill. Kelly, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. This is a historymaking surprise. Eric cantor is the first House Majority leader since that role was created in 1899, to lose that job. And cantor was widely expected to be the republicans next choice to be house speaker, but a newcomer with a fraction of cantors money and organization was able to topple one of the most powerful republicans in congress. The virginia shocker. Look, obviously we came up short. Reporter eric cantor, the House Republican majority leader, is knocked out. I know theres a lot of long faces here tonight, and its disappointing, sure. Reporter cantors defeat is one of the most headsnapping upsets in modern politics. This is a big deal, these kinds of things. It never happens, and there was no clue that it was going to happen. Reporter beaten by a littleknown and poorly funded Tea Party Challenger named david brat, who teaches College Economics and has never held public office. This is a miracle from god that just happened. Reporter brats surprise victory is also a serious blow to any slim chance for Immigration Reform. Demonstrators erupted after cantors concession. Brat hammered cantors past support for legal status for children of undocumented immigrants. Now hes working behind the scenes to push through amnesty. Reporter cantor also took heat from conservative commentators like radio host laura ingram, who made cantor the butt of a joke involving president obama. Maybe, you know, for getting Sergeant Bergdahl out of captivity, instead of sending five mvp taliban leaders, he could have sent eric cantor. Reporter so part of the surprise was the big wellknown National Tea Party groups had not been here supporting david brat, that made it more unexpected. Part of this now will go beyond virginias seventh district with a void in the house gop leadership in a real scramble to see who will be chosen as the next majority leader and next potential successor to john boehner when he ultimately decides to step down as speaker. I think i heard someone say apocalyptic. The question is why did no one see this coming . I felt like i saw something a week ago that said eric cantor had this locked up, no sweat. Virginia, notoriously low turnout in primaries. They usually dont pick noom nominees for primaries. So low turnout. The issue of immigration, particularly in the south, immigration is just the one issue that animates the conservative base in a way we havent seen anywhere. And then add in whats happened in the last 72 hours, the coverage of the crisis of these unaccompanied minors that have been crossing the border. It gave urgency to dave brats message at the perfect time, in a perfect situation. Low turnout. It all came together. And i think thats why it blind sided eric cantor. And its not just about eric cantor. I mean, this is going to have broad implications in the political world. There has been so much talk this election season that maybe the tea party had finally lost its umph. It hadnt been able to unseat major established candidates. And here we go, seeing something that has literally never happened before in the history of our nation. Does this show the tea partys still got it . It shows you theres an issue the tea party can grab on to. It used to be the debt. Then it was health care. Now its immigration. I think thats what people need to be careful with. Dont just throw this under the umbrella of tea party. This is about immigration and this, by the way, means Immigration Reform during the rest of the obama presidency. The idea that its going to happen is dead. It is not going to happen in 2016. And very quickly on that, is anything going to happen . I guess the question is whether republicans will be so spooked by someone in such a strong position of leadership being vulnerable that they wont want to compromise even one bit. I think the new mascot of the establishment wing of the Republican Party is going to be the turtle. I think youre going to see a whole bunch of these guys retreat into their shells like turtles. Theyre going to be afraid to do anything the rest of this legislative cycle. Anybody that might be facing a primary, forget it. I think legislating is done. Hold on there, because theres another story with pretty big political implications i want you to weigh in on. It is the latest Deadly School shooting. The gunman has now been identified as a student at Reynolds High School in the small town of troutdale, oregon. The victim was a fellow student just 14 years old. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer has more on this story. Miguel, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. Since the mass shooting in newtown a year and a half ago, there have been 74 School Shootings. Thats roughly one a week. Two students here lost their lives on tuesday. Students who should be celebrating, this was to be their last day of school today. Instead, they are grieving. Its a scene all too familiar. Heartbreak in a place where kids should be safe. Two people shot, one is down. Reporter tuesday, 8 00 a. M. Shots fired at Reynolds High School outside portland, oregon. Weve got shots fired. I heard three gunshots to start off with, and then about 30 seconds to a minute later, i heard three or four more gunshots. Reporter the gunman kills 14yearold Emilio Hoffman, a popular freshman. I would have some of the hardest days of my life and he would make me smile. Reporter p. E. Teacher todd rispler is wounded but will recover. The shooter, identified by a Law Enforcement source as a student, was armed with a highpowered rifle and is believed to have taken his own life. We are not in a position to 100 confirm his name and age at this time. Reporter as a s. W. A. T. Team sweeps the campus, terrified parents wait for word, praying their children are safe. I just want to hug my girl. I just want to hold her. I just want to hold her reporter with hands raised over their heads, police frisk everyone, and now say a second student not connected to the shooting was also armed with a gun. In the past 18 days alone, there have been four high profile shootings west of the rockies. 14 people killed. Mass shootings do often have some sort of copycat influence, so there can be a contagion effect. Reporter a troubling trend with deadly consequences, and so many innocent lives lost. Detectives say they have no motive, as is so common in these incidents, they fear they will never have answers. Savannah . Miguel, thank you very much. Meantime, president obama spoke out following that School Shooting. This is the 74th School Shooting since sandy hook. He had some pretty strong words. Take a look. Were the only developed country on earth where this happens. And it happens now once a week. And its a oneday story. Theres no place else like this. The United States does not have a monopoly on crazy people. Its not the only country that has psychosis. And yet, we kill each other in these Mass Shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than any place else. Chuck, pretty extraordinary moment. Whats your take on it . It was. He talked about the limits of what he could get done. He said he tried but this is really about congress. What was amazing is i thought he was very blunt. It was cogent political analysis. He is a guy that has been noticing the limits of his power lately, rather than having the audacity or the ambition to just try even when its hard. Natalie is here with more on that. Defense secretary chuck hagel will face angry lawmakers today when he testifies about the controversial prisoner swap with the taliban. Hagel appears before the House Armed Services committee, which is investigating the deal that resulted in the release of Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. In exchange, the u. S. Transferred five high level taliban detainees to qatar. Republicans and some democrats have sharply criticized the Obama Administration for not notifying congress in advance. The truck driver charged in the fatal highway crash that also injured comedian tracy morgan is due in court today. Kevin roper is apparently defending himself on twitter. Roper said, i was never charged at the scene of the accident because once again i was not guilty of any crime, not until all the tv cameras came. Roper denies reports he hadnt slept for 24 hours, saying if my accident occurs with no media spotlight, im issued a few traffic tickets. The excuse of me being up 24 hours is complete bs. Tracy morgan, meanwhile, remains in critical but stable condition. In south texas, a flood of immigrants from Central America is straining the resources of the federal government, and as chuck mentioned, of special concern are the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children coming in. Nbcs mark potter was there tuesday night when yet another group arrived from mexico. Reporter just before sundown near mission, texas, three adults and 14 children from el salvador walk across a dam near the rio grande, making their way illegally into the United States. They are thirsty and tired from a long journey. Moments after crossing over from mexico, they are spotted by local and u. S. Authorities. But instead of running, the immigrants walk to one of the police cars. There, they are all given water, including the youngest member of the group, a little girl. This teenager, who arrived with his mom, says he and others are fleeing Gang Violence in el salvador, and now that hes in the u. S. , he feels safe. Children in the group say theyve come here hoping to reunite with their parents already in the u. S. The mother of one of the kids telling nbc news families pay smugglers 8,000 to 9,000 to escort a child. Authorities say more than 47,000 unaccompanied children have entered the u. S. Illegally since last october. And so with that group in custody and headed out for processing now, the Border Patrol agents are back on the line, watching this area for more illegal crossings as the immigrants surge from Central America shows no sign of letting up. You know, Hillary Clinton has her critics, many people who say she really didnt accomplish anything singular as secretary of state. She gives herself an a for her job, she told me. Among the hard choices that she has remaining, however, is the choice about whether or not to run for president. Whats against running for president . I have been on this high wire of american politics and then american diplomacy for more than 20 years. I am about to become a grandmother in the fall, which i know is going to change my life. I dont want to be focused on something two years away. I want to be focused on this baby right in front of me. I love my life right now. Is being in the midst of all of the politics of it, is that a factor . It is a factor. I think anybody who says it isnt either has never done it, or may be trying to down play it. It is. Our politics right now are very contentious. Very dysfunctional if you look at our country. Does it get old, this constant review of your hair, your glasses . Or are you used to it . Im so used to it now. I do think it gets old. It gets old for any woman. But after a while, you just grin and bear it, i think is the way to handle it. Barbara bush recently said, all right, there should be people besides bushs and clintons who run for president. Dont you just love her . She is just so outspoken and lays it on the line. My view is that thankfully, this is still a free country, and despite all of the obstacles to running for president , anybody can. Clinton has her critics at home and abroad, among them russian president vladimir putin. I asked her about a snide remark he made recently. He really attacked you as a woman in these most recent remarks. Hes not the first male leader that has engaged in sexism on the public stage. He did. He attacked me because i have raised issues about his leadership, and in particular about the illegal occupation of crimea. Clinton writes in her book, the u. S. Was involved in negotiations with the taliban while she was secretary of state, and even then, getting Bowe Bergdahl back was part of the occasion. I think an awful lot of people think that were less safe today than we were a week ago because these five guys are out. These five guys are not a threat to the United States. They are a threat to the safety and security of afghanistan and pakistan. Its up to those two countries to make the decision once and for all that these are threats to them. So i think we may be kind of missing the Bigger Picture here. We want to get an american home, whether they fell off the ship because they were drunk or they were pushed or they jumped, we try to rescue everybody. She also writes extensively about benghazi, and i asked her whether or not in order to do that she hadnt kept a diary, she said she did keep extensive notes. Both victims had their throats slashed. Reporter the case against him was strong with prosecutors relying on what they called a mountain of dna evidence. Do you have enough evidence to convict o. J. Simpson . Of course we do. Reporter of course, a jury decided it wasnt enough. Not guilty of the crime of murder. Reporter but there was plenty of other evidence the jury didnt see or hear. Could it have made a difference in the trial . Like the testimony of nicoles best friend, kris jenner, who says nicole revealed something shocking just weeks before her murder. She told me, hes going to kill me and hes going to get away with it. Reporter and there were two witnesses who told police they spotted o. J. Simpson shortly after the murders. One of them was jill schiley. All of a sudden a white car comes flying north on bundy. I barely missed him. It was o. J. Simpson. Reporter she never testified in part because she sold her story. Neither did another witness, skip junus, who reported seeing simpson later that night at the airport. He was carrying this little cheap gym bag and was pulling things out and dumping them in the trash can. Reporter and remember simpsons socalled suicide note read by his close friend robert kardashian. Dont feel sorry for me. Ive had a great life. Reporter that, too, was never presented to the jury. Even the lowspeed bronco case didnt make it to court. In the end, an exhaustive investigation and an eightmonth trial was decided in just four hours. Nice to see you. We spent a lot of time in the months since your sons murder. Its a been 20 years. I can see the time passage on your face a little bit. Mine as well. Has the time passed in your heart . No. Its like yesterday. Loss is exactly the same. Nothing has changed. Nothing. No sense of normalcy returning to your life at some point over these past 20 years or is it a new normal . Its just become a new normal minus my son. Without any of the opportunity to share his life with him, his joys, his happinesses, his successes, all of thats gone. Kim, youve written a book recently and you spoke to savannah and you talked about the need to reclaim your path in life and your life. Did you have to actively force yourself to do it or does it occur naturally for you at some period . I think i had to actively force myself because at the age that i was, early 20s, to be kind of, you know, walking away from what i was supposed to be doing, i had to find what was important to me again and after my brother died i didnt know what that was because everything shifted. And i was lost for a really long time. Hard to find that place. This nation was trans fixed by the story, and in particular the trial. The trial of o. J. Simpson. There was one image from that trial, kim, that always captures my heart, and it is the moment the verdict was read and you burst into tears and, fred, you tried to console her, a father, it seemed, whose heart was breaking for a second time. Do you relive that moment . I do. You know, i look at that picture and it makes me so sad because the sadness on that girls face in that picture you say that girl. It doesnt even seem like you anymore . Because i dont feel like im her as much anymore. I still carry that angst and that grief with me, but i walk with a little bit more composure now and a little stronger position. But its heartbreaking to see that, and i was crushed obviously. Kato, these two were thrust into this story for an obvious reason. A son and a brother. You were a guest in a guest house. You wrote in an op ed. One day i was a struggling actor and the next day the media flexed their muscle and i became a celebrity, a pariah, the worlds most famous houseguest, a traitor, a dummy, a liar, a freeloader and even an assassins target. Never has a man done so little to be recognized by so many. How did it change your mouth . One day i was in a courtroom and the next day everybody is shouting my name. I was kato the character. Still to this day i cant believe some of the hate that can come over social media. You know, if i work, they say youre catch tallizing. If i dont, im a bum. I cant really win. So its sort of like its a very difficult situation to be in. Was it all outside your control . When you look back were there things you could have done differently . Do you know, matt, i testified to things that i knew, not what i thought happened. And that is thats the gods honest truth. I think what it was, a lot of times i had the people would say, hey, you looked like a deer in the headlights. Its because i sat in with the prosecution for over 20 hours and if a question came in during a trial, i was going, i dont remember that question, and being on camera, you dont realize the cameras always on you. So it was sort of like people going, when i look at that guy hes lying, hes a deer in the headlights. Let me ask you all, give you a chance to answer the same question. Kim, ill start with you. What did you learn about yourself through all of this . That im resilient, that im a fighter, that i learned how to be incredibly loyal and committed and what family is about. I learned how to stay strong in the face of adversity. Fred . I think if nothing else, i learned how to adjust, change but not change. Thats probably the biggest thing. I never had that question asked, but i think thats it in a nutshell. Do you know what, i realized that in 20 years going by i lost a mother and my sister lost her son in iraq. I cant imagine you losing a brother, you losing your son and then i can only relate to my sister losing her son going, its devastating. Every day i mean, you cannot not think about it and you also have to go through a process of grieving. I always said to my sister, grieving is just part of life. Its a very difficult thing. So i can only relate things to what my sister and my family went through, and then for you what you have to go through no matter what every day you have to think about it. Then reunion, whatever they call it, anniversary. Its very difficult. For you to have to go through this, i know its got to be really difficult. I hope people do take the time on the 20th anniversary not only to talk about the trial and the evidence and what we thought or didnt know but to remember the loss of life on that day. Well tell you about the frightening hunt for a possible super predator with a woman who spends her time diving for sharks. But first, this is today on nbc. Back now at 8 48 with the mysterious disappearance of a large great white shark that has scientists on the hunt for a socalled super predator. Heres nbcs kerry sanders. Reporter its a terrifying prospect, and a fascinating mystery. The possibility that in the depths of the ocean off australia, there may be an unknown predator so big its able to devour a tenfoot shark. A question that not only came to my mind, but everyones mind who was involved, but what did that . Whats going to eat a shark that big . Reporter film maker dave briggs started out 11 years ago documenting a scientific project to tag sharks. One, a tenfoot female, code named shark alpha. I remember looking at one of them thinking well, shes just a magnificent looking animal. Reporter but just four months later, shark alphas tag, similar to this one, washed ashore. The mystery now explored in a new smithsonian channel documentary. The tag recorded that shark alpha dove 1,900 feet in just seconds, but the temperature, instead of going down as expected, actually went up, from 46 to 78 degrees. It was obviously eaten. Reporter but by what . Shark expert Ralph Collier said it could have been almost anything. It could be another shark. It could be a marine mammal, a whale. Some people have suggested giant squid. Reporter just this week off the coast of jupiter, florida, boaters spotted a great white, currently the top predator in the worlds oceans, or as some scientists are now asking, could there be an even bigger super predator out there . Now 20, Madison Stewart has dedicated the last six years of her life fighting to protect sharks. Shes just completed her debut documentary. Its called shark girl. Good to see you, good morning. Good morning. Well talk about your documentary in a second, but why dont we just put a little exclamation point on what we just saw. What do you think happened to that tenfoot great white . Whatever it was, i know i want to dive with it. You really want to see it . Yes. Do you think there is such a thing as a super predator shark . Wouldnt it be amazing if there was. There has been in the past, but theyre extinct now, that we know of. The thing is, i think its a good example of what the media does with sharks. Sharks get eaten by other sharks. It could have been a bigger shark or a super mystery predator. So you brought up the media. Why do you think the media in particular is so fascinated by sharks . We love to have monsters. And sharks fit that description perfectly. The only time we see them is when theres a shark attack thats happened and the news does this bloodthirsty killer. Even shark week does it. Everyone likes to play up how dangerous they are. Its not easy for people to go see sharks themselves, so they believe it. You have seen so many up close in the wild, in the ocean. Youve been diving ie ining sin were a little girl. Does any part of them scare you . Are you cautious when youre down there . The only thing about sharks that scares me is that ive seen them disappear from areas around their reef. Weve always got a level of respect for them. We never pretend that theyre harmless because theyre not. But imagine you know your dog really well and he may look vicious to other people, but hes not. And thats what its like with shark. What do sharks in particular teach us about the health of our oceans . Sharks are so incredibly important to our oceans. Theres been places in the ocean in the past where theyve been taken out and the ecosystem has collapsed around them. They are the top predator. Theyre at the top of the food chain so theres relatively few of them as well, which is ironic because theyre also the one species that we want to get rid of. We spent a lot of time in australia. You dive a lot at the Great Barrier reef. What changes have you seen in that reef that youve been dive sfg. I grew up loving sharks. Theyre my favorite. Theres a great change in their population. Its the only reason i got involved in conservation. We take sharks legally through commercial fisheries each year in australia. And people eat shark meat and Shark Liver Oil is in our cosmetics. If we saw a rhino horn for sale, it would be outrage, but its happening to sharks. You can go in to any chemist and buy shark products and theyre for sale at our supermarkets. So theyre this neglected species. Do you think well ever fully understand everything that lives in the ocean . No. And thats a good thing. One thing i love about sharks is theyre one of the last animals on this planet that you can still have a wild interaction with. We get in the water with them with nothing but our knowledge of them to protect us. We know theyre the top predators, but hundreds of people have recreational interactions with sharks on a daily basis. You speak beautifully on their behalf. Its nice having you here. A Law Enforcement source says the shooter was believed to be a Student Armed with a highpowered rifle. Theres no known motive at this time. One student was killed, 14yearold freshman Emilio Hoffman, described as a very popular young man. Physical Education Teacher todd rispler was wounded. Were told hell recover. There were vigils with students shouting we love you, emilio. This statistic is mind boggling. 74 School Shootings since newtown, thats december of 2012. 74. Thats just more than one a week on average. The president of the United States had some very harsh words after this latest shooting. A lot of people will say, well, its a Mental Health problem. Its not a gun problem. The United States does not have a monopoly on crazy people. Its not the only country that has psychosis. And yet, we kill each other in these Mass Shootings at rates that are exponentially higher than any place else. The country has to do some soul searching about this. This is becoming the norm. And we take it for granted. In ways that as a parent are terrifying to me. And thats the scary part right there. This becomes commonplace. Now when i go into a mall, im looking at how am i getting out. I really do think about that. When i get into a movie theater, i now look, where are the exits. And i dont think its paranoia. I really dont. The president makes a point about soul searching. As i said, im from texas. Red part of this country. I heard a political analyst on morning joe say perhaps the people in the middle need to speak up more. We talk a lot about the extreme socalled right, the extreme socalled left. But when you look at polling, overwhelmingly, there is support for some kind of quote unquote common sense legislation. So we look at these extremes of our country right now and the divisiveness, but when you look at it by the numbers, theres support overwhelmingly from the middle, and so you have some out there who say it is time for those people to seek up more, and perhaps come up with a compromise. So were not doing the story 74 times in a year since newtown. Which then leads to Something Like this, this bodyguard blanket. The idea that to help protect school kids. What is it . The company does go out of its way to point out this is not a solution. This is not the 100 perfect its just another layer to try to help in the worst case scenario. It speaks to the desperation, but the larger conversation is not a blanket. Its what were going to do to save our kids. Another story thats, you know, in the news and people are reacting to on social media, 20 years ago, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman were found dead in brentwood, california. We know that that set off the events that ended with the trial of the century, is what it was called, the o. J. Simpson case. Everyone remembers, of course, the infamous chase down the 405, the bronco with o. J. Simpson in the back there. I was a reporter in dallas at the time when this started. I know you guys surely remember where you were. Where were you, al . I was at a friends wifes Birthday Party in a restaurant and everybody was crowded into the bar watching this. I mean, it was riveting. Then the rumors were that o. J. Had committed suicide. It was an insane 48hour period. Absolutely. You know, you think about it, the things that came out of that, the tragedy, the awareness of Domestic Violence, which the court case ended one way, but it was undeniable that there had been Domestic Violence in that relationship. And also the loss, the families, and what the family members of people who are victims of violence, how they react with the spectacular media spectacle that was hovering over it. So this morning, ron goldmans family kim, his sister and his father fred were guests on this show, as well as kato kaelin, who was a house guest of o. J. Simpson, they talked about it 20 years later and how they feel. Lets listen. I look at that picture and it makes me so sad. Because, you know, the sadness on that girls face in that picture. You say that girl. It doesnt even seem like you anymore . Because i dont feel like im her as much anymore. I still carry that angst and that grief with me. But i walk with a little bit more composure now and a little stronger position. But its heartbreaking to see that, and i was crushed, obviously. And that was her kato kaelin also spoke about people described him as a free loader. We saw the glare of the media and how people can be categorized. Heres how he talked about how the trial defined his life. How did it change your life . Well, one day im in a courtroom. I walk out of a courtroom and everybodys shouting my name. I became this public figure, and everybody had an opinion. I was kato the character. Still to this day, i cant believe some of the hate that can come over social medias. You know, if i work, they say youre capitalizing. Still to this day. If i dont, well then im a bum. I cant really win. So its sort of like its a very difficult situation to be in. Willie, you remember where you were when the verdict came in . Yeah, i was home from college. I was watching a knicks playoff game. Remember on nbc, they went split screen, and then they took o. J. For a while. Theres a documentary about what was going on behind the scenes. My father had just landed at l. A. X. , was on the 405 where they were listening to the radio, he and the cab driver and they said theres this chase. The driver said, thats right behind us. So my dad pulls the car over and watches the whole thing pass by. And he said the thing that we became used to later that struck him was the people on the overpasses with the signs, go o. J. , go. Like it was a sporting event. And it was just the beginning of this bizarre cultural spectacle. It was a surreal event. I remember the people with the signs thinking, you all had cardboard to make a sign . The beginning of all of the strangeness and the sadness that went along. By the way, dateline at 9 00 8 00 central, the people vs. O. J. Simpson, what the jury never heard. Even all of these years later, there are new details that are coming out about this case. Interesting story. How many of us have eaten at a waffle house . Oh, please. All the time. Why wouldnt you every day . This waitress in North Carolina waffle house. She gets s a thousand dollar ti. Somebody left a thousand dollars on the credit card receipt. The waffle House Management said she couldnt keep it. Company policy says extremely large tips left on credit cards have to be refunded in case the customer decides to dispute the charge. So she takes her story to the local paper. After it starts spreading, the tipper caught wind of this and actually writes her out a check for a thousand bucks. Waffle house says it was always the companys intention to make sure she got the money. In fact, they have a statement, this has given us cause to review our procedures so we can get tips to our associates quicker in these unusual situations. Our intentions were for the associate to get her tip all along. Sorry that our soerassociate ane customer are having to go through this. They want to make sure that it wasnt a mistake. Complicating it, the customer was out of town for a while, they couldnt reach him. Eventually she got her tip three weeks later. I want to know what she did to get that thousand dollar tip. But the movie one of the many things the movie is about is sort of the power that people tend to give other peoples opinions. In this case, its all about jon discovering that hes actually thats gotten out of control for him and hes no longer cooking for himself, hes cooking for other people. And my character as an early supporter of his recognizes that and i sort of bust him on it. You talk about opinion, though. This movie has gotten such great reviews. Right out of the gate. When youre making a movie like this, did you have any sense that this thing was going to break as big as it did . You never know, but for us, its about the process and the great thing about working with jon, hes an extraordinary collaborator. First of all, he started out as an actor, so he immediately understands where youre coming from, and hes so confident in his own vision that hes very, very open to everybody elses input. And he just immediately makes it fun and sort of sucks you into his game. And youre sort of having a great time before you even know it. And when youre having a great time is when everybody does their best work. So its just sort of this feedback loop of wonderfulness. Wonderfulness was looking at all those characters youve played. Youve got this bill murray connection. A fun fact i dont think a lot of people realize. He helped you break into the business . My cousin frankie and bill were next door neighbors. This morning were focusing on your personal health, everything from how often you should see the dentist to whether or not you really need that multivie minut multivitamin. Here with us to give us things we need to know, is ob gyn dr. Evelyn menia. Were going to launch in with the annual physical exam. Women, men often miss it for different reasons. I know. I know. You really should. For women in particular. Sometimes they use the gynecologist as your annual exam nar examination, but most of us dont prescribe for high Blood Pressure or cholesterol. My biggest complaint is, i feel fabulous. I say, prove it to me. In writing. Im guilty of this. I think i skip it. When i do go, are there certain tests i should be asking to make sure they perform . A complete blood cell count. We see how your bone marrow is functioning. Anemia. Your lipid profile. Good, bad, indifferent. Also all your chemistries. Make sure youre not imbibing too much on not only the keg over here, but the keg at home. That type of thing. These things are very important. Simple, simplistic things. Ekgs. How is your heart doing . The auto scope to look at your ear and your eyes. Very important. Thats what your internist does. And how often we visit the gynecologist as women. Is there a change . Ive always believed it was once a year. The gynecologist, as a matter of fact, and heres our thing, our gynecologist it should be an annual examination. And there are newer recommendations fr that you nee your pap every three years, which is shocking for most of us. And its usually traditionally, you always have your annual and your annual pap. However, if you have had a history of annual paps, we do screen you differently. But for the majority of people that do have or have had pap smears that are normal, you can just do it every three years. However, i am the only doctor that sees you in your birthday suit, so it is important that we do your breast exam, your pelvic exam, check for masses, do your rectal exam after 50 to check for anal cancer, and i can also check for melanomas. Just quickly, do we have it once, or every three years . You have your pap every three years. Only that examination. But you need your pelvic exam every year. Got it. Next one is an eye exam. I dont think most people get this done unless they feel like theres a problem. I know. Or when youre looking like this and your arms are too short or youre squinting. You cant read anything. I really suggest children should start, believe it or not, young. Because most of the time they wont tell you that theyre squinting or anything else like that or theyre having a problem reading in school. However and this should be every three years. For us as adults, we should go to the eye doctor every year. Theres so many things that you dont feel. Glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts. You dont know whats going on with your eyeball, and its not about just squinting. And do you know how much botox it takes for you to get rid of your lines afterwards . Its preventative. I dont. We may one day. Moving on to the dentist. How long should we go and get our teeth checked . The dental checkup should be every year. My husband would be very happy for me to tell everybody this. You should have a deep cleaning of your teeth twice a year. So every six months. Every six months. And the reason being is not only are you getting a dental cleaning, its not only doing those pearly whites and making them white, but its also the disease in between your teeth, like gingivitis. You want to have your pearly whites as long as you can. Most importantly, dental hygienists also check for oral cancer, which is very important, especially in young men that smoke at the age of 30. Clean twice a year. This one, theres been a lot of literature saying maybe vitamins arent worth it anymore. Whats your view . Me personally, i try to do my best. From monday through friday, im pretty good about my nutrition and things like that. Im very cognizant. On the weekends, i tend to be a little bit lazier and i kind of fall off the wagon. So most people do not do really, really well in terms of nutrition. So you really i always believe that you should supplement. You dont have to go all out. Something very, very simple, especially containing vitamins a, c, d, e, and f. Vitamin d is very often. How often do you take those . Once a day. Just a daily multivitamin. Nothing spectacular. And weight. My favorite thing. People oftwonder how often w should weigh ourselves. I say to you dont weigh yourself at all. Do not weigh yourself every day. I think it just really psychologically does something to you. I believe that body mass index, its kind of like a general thing and it just really measures and gives you a range of what your target should be. Under weight, healthy, overweight. Honestly, i like my tape measure. Thats the best thing. I encourage my patients to measure the four parts of their body. Bust, waist, hips, and their thighs once a month. Its much, much better than doing the scale. And you can tell, you know, oh, my god, these pants are fitting. Its easier. Im going to measure my bust right now. Measure your bust right now, willie. So i bought all the books, bought everything to figure out how to do this right. We talk a lot about the modern dad. Is there a difference between dads today and, say, dads 50 years ago . I think so. Ive interviewed close to 100 dads for this project, and i think dads now are much more intentional about getting it right than ever before. When you know better, you do better. Oprah always says that. Dads 50 years ago thought work, bring home the bacon. And now you know, with your son, matt, you need to interact. You have a special needs child. And he needs you there more than ever. Yeah. So my son has autism. And that comes with a unique set of challenges. One of the things i figured out along the way is its really not about me. You were mentioning how you have these anxieties, fears about how you were going to do it right. It just doesnt matter. You have to put all that stuff away so you can focus on what your kid needs. Tell us about your son liam. What kind of kid is he . Hes so joyful. Hes so fantastic. Youre seeing some images of the kiddos on the screen there. Hes just happy. He wants to be with his family and go to school and do well, all the same things that every other kid does. He just struggles. Hes got communication issues, social issues, restrictive, repetitive behaviors. Hes a great kid. I think thats one of the reasons i wanted to be part of the project. Im a dad, heres my kid, he has a special need. Were just like everybody elses family. What do you love about being a father . I could go on all day about it. Me, too. You say were scared at first, and then joy takes over. I think the best moments as a dad is when i see my kids flourishing and doing well with what they love and what theyre good at. Those are the best moments, when were together doing fun things and theyre at their best. Im honored to be with three great dads, having had a great dad, it definitely makes a difference in a girls life, as it does with boys. Ive been cooking now with willie for about two years, and there are certain things that you arent sure if youre doing right. Like cutting an onion. Cutting an onion. Thats a great example. This is actually something that i learned after culinary school, believe it or not. Why dont you show me how you would approach that onion if i said give me thin strips. Youre giving yourself a flat side. Very good. Great. Weve got some stuff to learn here. Look at willie. They were nice and thin, but they werent strips. Heres another way to do it. And this is going to change your life in the kitchen. First of all, cut like you did pole to pole. Give yourself a flat side to cut on. The key here is go with the fibers. The lines are already done for you. Like coloring. So you just follow the lines. I notice youre holding your knife pretty firmly. You have it in the wrist . Im actually holding the blade with my fingers as well. Hide my fingers. When you do it like this, look at this beautiful cut. Instead of willies cuts willie, i dont want to make you feel bad. Youre picking on me here. You make cuts. You should know how to cut an onion. This holds together because youre cutting with the fiber of the onions, so when you make caramelized onions see, beautiful. All right, moving on. So this is a great visual example. So cooking potatoes. Perfectly cooked potatoes, not so perfectly cooked. Ive seen those a lot in my kitchen. So what did you do here . You put those potatoes into boiling water. They burst. If i put it in boiling water, i think it will cook faster. The outside will, but because its so dense, the inside will stay raw. So what do you do . Instead, you start like this. Cold water. Put it right on top of the potatoes and start. It will take the same amount of time for a perfectly cooked potato. And so now you turn on the heat . Now you turn on the heat. Do you always salt your water . I do salt my potato water. Weve got burning garlic, for sure. Garlic cooks really fast. Weve got very hot oil here. So im going to go ahead and put it into this pan just so we can sort of change that out a little bit. Two problems with very, very hot im going to move this over here for a second. Two problems with very hot oil. First of all, if you dont use enough oil, that garlic will go. So whats the trick here . The trick here is use enough oil so that that garlic is submerged. Stir it constantly. And then you wont burn it. The reason why is that garlic doesnt have that much water. Other plants have 90 more water. Now were going to bread some chicken here . Whats the move . You can see the difference here. This is what happens when you dont use flour. When you bread chicken, you want to go wet to dry, to wet, to dry. Thats how you get the great coating. Wet to dry, wet to dry. I have to ask you quickly because we advertised it. The dry, wet ingredients on a cake. If we can come over here. Why do they have to go in separately . When you take your butter and eggs and make it nice and fluffy, you got to keep that fluff. So when you add the flour and the milk, you want to do it in stages. Flour then milk. Keeps it fluffy. City Council Voted last night to give it that distinction. Supporters hope to save the theater from getting torn down. But earning the landmark designation does not necessarily keep the theater from being demolished. It just means developers will half to jump through a lot more hoops to build something new in the theaters place. That same meeting, the City Council Also approved tough restrictions on medical marijuana dispensaries. Those new regulations will force most of the 78 legally operating pot shops, at least legally operating currently, to move away from schools, day cares, neighborhoods, and other sensitive areas. The new regulations will take effect in about a month. Those dispensaries have about a year to move their location. We are off to a nice start to your wednesday, but the winds, they are aroaring. Danielle molotto is married to Staff Sergeant philip who has been deployed to iraq and afghanistan. Serving our country meant he had to miss some very important mile stones including the birth of his youngest twins who he has never met. Take a look at the story. After graduating basic training he we were married on july 5, 2008. Philip was sent to iraq in 2009 for 12 months. After his homecoming we knew we wanted to start a family. Luke and alicia arrived in august 17, 2011. We were together only three months when philip received orders to deploy to afghanistan. He was able to come home for two weeks to celebrate the first birthday. And in february, 2013 we learned that i was expecting, you guessed it, our second set of twins. But it was bittersweet. Philip left for afghanistan and exactly one week later our little bundles of joy, derrick and ariana came into the world. The next few months were hectic. Philip did his best to comfort me from afar. That helped me keep going. I am grateful for the support of my mom and motherinlaw in recent months but we are so ready to welcome philip home. Unbelievable. Amazing. Unbelievable.
