Investigators believe the beef may be tainted with the e. Coli bacteria, but Health Investigators say its a rare bug. The recall affects retailers who sold products from the Wolverine Packing Company of detroit, including angus steak burgers and ground beef patties. Overnight, an updated list from the usda of stores that may be selling that recalled ground beef. At least six retailers across ten states, including major chain Gordon Food Service marketplace, which released a statement saying in part any customers that purchased fresh premium beef angus steak burgers should discard any remaining product immediately. Wolverine Packing Company of detroit is recalling nearly two Million Pounds of ground beef products sold to restaurants and Grocery Stores after 11 confirmed illnesses. The company says no product tested positive, but its being prudent with the voluntary recall and redoubling efforts to assure Safety Standards exceed customers expectations. Stay tuned. Its critically important that consumers Pay Attention to this outbreak and this recall information. But its not just burgers. On thursday, prepared food manufacturer lance hall incorporated, also known as hot mamas foods, announced another major recall. Nearly 15,000 pounds of hummus and dip products due to possible contamination. So far no illnesses have been reported. These products are found in some target and trader joes Stores Across the country. These manufacturers are doing the right thing. We want manufacturers to be proactive. The centers for Disease Control tracked the e. Coli outbreak, using a sort of genetic fingerprinting. This particular strain can cause severe food poisoning, even kidney failure. Meantime, if youre one of the tens of millions heading out of town for the holiday, we want to tell you powerful storms, including a destructive hailstorm in pennsylvania, have already led to serious travel delays and damage, so what should we expect today . We have your Holiday Weekend covered from the roads to the airports to the beaches, but weve got to start with the weather, and mr. Roker. Well, heres the deal. Last night, we had some major storms going on. They didnt even have tornado warnings in parts of upstate new york and they still got hammered. Six states battle the elements right before the Holiday Weekend. National Weather Service investigating a possible tornado that touched down in upstate new york thursday afternoon. No reports of injuries, but at least one home was destroyed. And they say that Freight Train sound. Good lord, it was a Freight Train sound. Very scary sound. In pennsylvania, tennis ball sized hail, causing heavy damage, shattering car windshields. Thats one thats totally destroyed. Farther south along the delawaremaryland border, at least a dozen homes and buildings were either damaged or destroyed by high winds, winds of up to 50 Miles Per Hour were reported in virginia. While out west, heavy rains and hail slowed down drivers in colorado. But its a different story over in flagstaff, arizona, where dry, hot temperatures, low humidity and strong winds are fueling a growing wildfire there. It is now ten times bigger and not yet contained. Officials say hundreds of firefighters are working around the clock to gain control of the blaze. And guys, good news is the winds have died down for those wildfires, but its still going to be awfully dry. And then memorial day looking pretty good, although a few showers around chicago. As we move out west, the drought continues in california. 73 in los angeles. 65 San Francisco. By sunday, youre looking at more rain in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle, some showers and 66. On memorial day, the heat is on. Vegas 103. 103 in phoenix, arizona. Now, with nearly 32 million folks expected to be on the road for their holiday destinations, theres going to be a lot of gridlock. Our own dylan dreyer is patrolling the highways of new jersey. Shes on the new jersey turnpike. Thats right, al. We are starting to see the kickoff of the summer driving season. We are driving along the new jersey turnpike right now. So far so good. But its expected, the Holiday Travel traffic to get going around 10 00 this morning. Now, aaa predicts that 36 million drivers will hit the roads this memorial day weekend. About 88 of those in cars. Now, the most congested highways across the country, in california, there are five of the most congested highways. And in hawaii of all places, thats where we have three of the most congested highways, and two are centered right around all places two are centered around new york city. So we are looking at some positive news as far as gas prices are concerned. They are similar to or a little less than they were last memorial day but in California Gas Prices are still up around 4 a gallon. In areas in orange and yellow thats where gas prices are running around 3. 50 and 3. 25 in green. So some tips. If its at all possible to leave tomorrow, i highly recommend it. If you can extend your holiday week end to tuesday, even better and avoid the peak traffic time all together. As we look at the flight aware map here you can see airplanes that are already air born. The only problem being reported right now is in denver and the delays there are about 30 minutes. Later today because of some rain expected around boston, denver, and actually in the new york area there may be some delays that really wont imfact aircraft but probably getting to and from the airport, so pack that into your plans. As we look at the security lines, a few things to think about today. Experts say first of all this is the sort of day where you dont try to sneak a bag thats a little bit bigger than it should be to get into the overhead because so many people are going to be traveling, they wont look the other way and let you slip on. Plus there are few empty seats on plains anyway, these days, and on a day like today there will be oversold planes so get to the airport early. Finally, if you see this on your airline ticket, the tsa precheck, recognize what that means. That used to be for frequent fliers, people knew what that was. But increasingly its being added to random flyers who find out they get to go into a special security line where they dont have to take off their shoes, they dont have to take a computer out of the bag. The problem is, a lot of people dont understand that when they get there and the seasoned travelers who are in the tsa precheck give a lot of, lets say, uncomfortable glares to those who are clogging the system up. Yet another close call between two airplanes. This happened may 9 out of houston, two United International flights came within 400 feet of each other while they were both taking off. Each plane had about 150 people on board and it turns out a flight controller mistakenly told one of the planes to turn right when it should have turned left. Six weeks ago, a similar incident happened here at newark airport. Some frightening moments for passengers on a bus in russia thursday. A hot Water Pipeline burst under the bus and it started to fill with boiling water. Passengers screamed as they ran out the door. Around 20 people were on the bus at the time, some were take on the the hospital and treated for burns. Paul mccartney is on the mend this morning after being treated for a virus that led him to cancel his tour in japan. The former beatle is expected to make a complete recovery and will be taking time to rest. Mccartney cancelled shows in japan and one in south korea. The tour is scheduled to resume next month, though, back here in the united states. A florida woman narrowly escapes her stalled out car as a commuter train barrels down the track. It shows the train crashing into the car on monday on the bottom left of your screen you can see the woman barely escaping before the train hits the car. It shows a Good Samaritan making a lifesaving catch. You can see two men looking out, their arms out. On the second floor right above is a oneyearold baby hanging from a window and watch as the baby falls. Fortunatedly man makes the catch of a lifetime. Chinas Central Television reported the baby might have been looking for its mother and climbed on to the window during a thunderstorm. Thats just crazy. There will be more than 3,000 Police Officers involved in the security operation, with emphasis on jerusalem. His ministry includes refugees from syria and iraq, some of whom will meet the pope on saturday. They feel that they are not numbers in the big list of the refugees. They feel that they are human beings. Reporter every day, 100 new refugees register here with the catholic charity. People continue to stream across the borders, mainly femaleheaded households who are just looking for shelter and a safe place to raise their children. Reporter and most are muslim. This suburb of amman is a christian enclave. Its a safe haven for this woman, who fled syria with her husband and children and now lives in this tworoom apartment. She will meet the pope. She says she is happy the pope cares about the refugees and she will ask him to pray for her family. The u. N. Says refugees now make up 20 of jordans population. Yet another nba owner is at the center of controversy this morning. Dallas mavericks owner mark cuban forced to issue an apology over some very candid comments he made about race. Nbcs ron allens got that story. Ron, good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you, savannah. Cuban admitted, using his words now that he is bigoted and has certain prejudices about people based on their race. It was a wideranging interview at a business conference. Cuban called Donald Sterlings attitude about race, stupid, but it was this remark that got him into trouble. If i see a black kid in a hoodie at night on the other side of the street, you know, im probably on the same side of the street, im probably going to walk to the other side of the street. Reporter cubans following thought expressed a similar attitude toward a hypothetical white figure. If i see a white guy with a shaved head and lots of other tattoos, im going to the other side of the street. Reporter but describing a black kid in a hoodie as threatening ignited outrage. Tweets calling his remarks very problematic, distasteful. He apologized. In hindsight, i should have used different examples. I did not consider the Trayvon Martin family. Cuban said he stood by the rest of his comments about race and stereotypes at a conference of entrepreneurs by inc. Magazine, who tried to put his views into context. You know, i think were all bigots. We all succumb to those thoughts, and youve got to realize that when you have those thoughts, theyre wrong. Hes just being honest. Were not used to public figures really taking that proactive approach to their own shortcomings. Reporter cuban is a fierce competitor. Never at a loss for words, with refs or on reality shows. Its knot nothing personal, robert. No, it is personal, cuban. It is, but i dont care. Reporter his latest comments magnified in the sterling scandal. Cuban has not said whether he will vote to strip sterling of ownership of his team. In the past, he has called the issue a slippery slope. He says he confronts bigotry in his own companies, giving people a chance to improve. The race is on to protect homes threatened by that Massive Wildfire in arizona. The fire has grown to more than 7,000 acres and the flames are pushing closer to the town of flagstaff. Thousands remain under preevacuation warnings. The man charged with abducting a california teen ten years ago, enforcing his alleged victim into marriage, claims that she is lying. An attorney for the suspect contends the now 25yearold woman has made up her story because that couple is separating. Well have more on that story coming up. And president obama is announcing a big shakeup to his cabinet today. Current housing secretary sean donovan is to become budget director. And san antonio mayor julian castro, nominated for secretary of housing and urban development. Lets begin this halfhour with an american scientist. This guy is very lucky to be alive. Following a dangerous 70foot fall in the himalayas. He filmed his own escape from what he thought was certain death. Katy tur has the story behind this dramatic video. Reporter john all is an experienced climber, but during his trek up the snowy himalayas, thats when it took a turn for the worse. Thats when he took out his phone and started recording. [ bleep ]. I fell through the hole. Reporter its about as close as you can come to death. Thankfully i didnt keep falling that way. Reporter scientist john all fell 70 feet. Trapped here instead. On this ledge. My arm, i cant use. Reporter into a crevasse while climbing in the himalayas. Somehow climb out that way. Reporter his body repeatedly climbing into walls of ice, he broke his arm, five ribs and dislocated his shoulder. Looking around, option werent good. Climbing out seemed nearly impossible. He may have survived the fall, but living to tell the tale looked unlikely. Got to stop on this ledge. Reporter after six agonizing hour, all says he managed to climb out of the hole using his ice axe. Sort of like an inch worm. Every foot i moved forward cost me huge amounts of energy. I huddled under the sleeping bag as well as i could shivering and slowly dying, waiting for the helicopter to arrive. Reporter all says rescue teams were finally able to reach him the next morning, flying him to a nearby hospital, telling us his story from nepal, all is now recovering. His injuries, though severe, not lifethreatening. It was one of the most miserable, longest nights of my life. Reporter the 44yearold is an experienced climber and geography professor. A director at the American Climbers science program, all said hes Resource Management and climate change, which is what brought him to the icy peaks of the himalayas. The work we were doing, its really unfortunate that it got disturbed. Reporter his injuries may be healing, but all says the stress of what could have been the end is harder to shake. I have to move forward and realize that the good outweighs the risk. And its worth it. Even though it is scary. All is no stranger to scaling dangerous peaks. He climbed Mount Everest in 2010. Says that despite this incident, hes excited to heal and get back to doing what he loves. In fact, he already has a climbing trip on the books for peru in two weeks. I dont think i would get back up there, but he is a little braver. Maybe this is a generational thing. But if that were to happen to me, i would not be thinking about grabbing my cell phone. Id be using both hands to try and get out of that crevasse. He wanted to film it just in case they didnt find him, the last moments his family would be able to see of him. He fought valiantly. In fact, in northern texas, theyve already picked up about a couple of inches between amarillo and san angelo. And this upper level low is going to be developing and all this moisture coming up. Looking for this gulf moisture coming in, and a lot of instability. So you can see that green spreading out throughout a good portion of texas, and so heres what were looking for. Look at these rainfall amounts. We are looking some areas picking up in the next five days, seven to nine inches of rain. Its not going to end the drought, but boy, is it going to give them some relief over the ne 7 35. You made it to friday. We have a lot of fog to show you this morning right at the immediate coast and the same overcast sky over most of your inland valleys, at least for now. You might find a little coastal mist and drizzle on your way to work. Nonetheless, a nice finish to the day becoming sunny by lunchtime at the coast and sunshine in the south bay and by 9 00 a. M. Now to the latest on a case thats really stirred emotions nationwide. An arizona mother was arrested back in april after police found her two children alone in her sweltering car. She has not seen them since, but as Nbcs Joe Fryer explains, that is now changing. Reporter Shanesha Taylor has not seen her two children for two months, ever since she was accused of leaving them in a car while attending a Job Interview in arizona. But thursday, a judge granted her the right to supervised visits. Today is a major victory because now she is able to see her kids. Reporter taylor is charged with child abuse after Scottsdale Police found her sons, a 6monthold and a 2yearold inside her car. According to the police report, the windows were rolled down about one inch, the car keys were in the ignition. Both children were sweating profusely and appeared to be in distress. And the temperature inside the car was over 100 degrees. Police say they were in the vehicle for about 38 minutes. The children specifically, it can impact them within minutes. The heat rises in vehicles, even in cooler climates. Reporter taylors case has sparked debate across the country. Many say its never okay to leave a child alone in a car. This cannot be allowed, even for a moment. Reporter but taylors supporters who say she once served in the air force, argue she was trying to help her family. Shes a veteran, in a way of speaking, that has fallen through the safety net. Reporter taylor told police she could not find a babysitter for the Job Interview. Any felt compassion after seeing her emotional mug shot, more than 50,000 have signed an online petition calling for the charges to be dropped and a fundraising site generated nearly 115,000. He was being interviewed when the subject turned to clippers owner Donald Sterling. Cuban called sterlings attitude stupid, but listen to what he said after that. If i see a black kid in a hoodie at night on the other side of the street, im probably on the same side of the street, im probably going to walk to the other side of the street. If i see a white guy with a shaved head and lots of tattoos, im going back to the other side of the street. So i think it was the hoodie that got people going, the parallel to the Trayvon Martin case upset some people. So cuban then apologized if a fivepart tweet, which read, in hindsight, i should have used different examples. I didnt consider the Trayvon Martin family. I apologize to them for that. Beyond apologizing to the martin family, i stand by the words and substance of the interview. Hes basically being honest about the way he views race. About the way he views threats. Its for perceived threats. I think its a natural i mean, for all of us, talking about after 9 11, were all very vigilant and if you feel like youre threatened in some way, its a natural inclination. I think he was saying its not intentional on his part. He knows its irrational in most cases, but this is just the way he feels. I think any time you have an open and honest conversation about race, there are going to be two sides that come out of it. I think we all are trying to be a lot more vigilant. Im on the subway, i dont care what color you are, you get on the subway and youve got a big package, a bag, or Something Like that your behavior is off. Acting a little strange, im getting a little nervous. Im looking for a policeman. To be clear, im not defending anything mark cuban said. And i dont think hes even defending what he said. He said this is the way i feel. He apologized for it. He realized the error of the statement. Cuban actually said he has not said whether or not hes going to vote to strip Donald Sterling of ownership of the clippers. He declined to comment further. Said his tweets speak for themselves. He also said he felt a little bit like a hypocrite just because he has had prejudices, as we all have, unfortunately. But he has said, you know, i try to correct and keep that behavior in check. Right. So this ones kind of interesting. Not having been an athletic student in school, parents of students at north hill elementary in rochester hills, michigan, have reportedly been informed that competition will be kept to a minimum at an upcoming field day. So look at this flier. It was posted on facebook for the june 6th event. Its titled, come join the fun. The purpose of the day is for our school to get together. Its an eye test. I was able to see, are you actually reading it . For an enjoyable two hours of activities. Since we believe that all of our children are winners, the need for athletic ability will be kept to a minimum. The real reward will be the enjoyment and good feelings of participation. Wow. I remember field day being always fun. It was never super competitive. It was always like the sack racing and the egg spoon racing. I mean, is that competitive now . Maybe it has become. I mean, with Everything Else. I understand what theyre doing. If theyre trying to push that into say other competitive sports, then probably thats not a great idea. But for a field day i agree. I think field day is different. I played sports my whole life. Im as competitive as they come. But i think this is an elementary school. Its k through fifth grade. So for you know, a 5, 6, 7, 8yearold, its okay if you dont have a big winner at the end of every competition. Maybe there was some event that happened at the last field day. Right. Which we dont know. For the sack race, somebody put springs in their kids sack or something. I dont know. Somebody boiled the egg in the egg race. Exactly. A benchclearing brawl from a balloon toss. Thats what i remember. Like water balloon tossing. It was all about the fun stuff. The problem was when they froze the water balloon. Then it gets ugly. Think how carefully you drive during a first few trips with a brandnew car. This woman was driving a car. This is dash cam video of the moment she was forced to jump from that new car after it stalled on the train tracks in florida. You see there the conductor, just in a fullon panic. Kristin taylor was getting used to driving a stick shift when apparently she just stalled out. Luckily she escaped with only minor injuries. It doesnt seem like she could have escaped. She just barely makes it on the left. Its barely in the time of that video you can see her making it out from that car. But unbelievable story there that she was able to make it out. Just minor injuries. Thankfully. You look at the full piece of video, the dash cam. The conductor comes around that corner and he doesnt have much time at all. And then he just braces for it. Jams on the brakes. Pushes the emergency button. But i dont see right here how she gets away. Thats crazy. The only thing is the car is being pushed down the track. So its being pushed away from her. You see her kind of step out. You do see her kind of make it out. The good thing is she made it out with her life and shes good. But she hadnt even made her first payment on that car. Brandnew car. When we understood the impact that these service dogs can have on veterans, we knew we needed to do this. They just have a wonderful impact. And save veterans lives. Im impressed by the range of services these dogs can provide. A lot of times you think of the outward injuries, the ones we can see. But theres traumatic brain injury, ptsd, dogs help with that, too. Absolutely. Captain james and i were talking earlier, you start to lose your independence and depression can set in, and liz absolutely lets james be independent, which is a wonderful thing. Captain, tell us about liz . Well, because i was injured in iraq, i was in iraq for 25 months and i had various injuries. I take about 21 pills a day to survive. And if i dont take these pills, my body can go into shock and i will cease to exist. When i was injured, i was living at home with my parents and i lost my independence. A man at 35 years old, having to depend on my mother and father to take care of me. So now with my service dog liz, if i drop my pill bottles, she can pick it up for me. She can open and close doors for me. She can turn on and off lights for me. She can pick up my wallet. So this is a lifesaver for me. And, for example, if i was just to drop my pill bottle right now, i would give her a quick command. Liz, get it. Go on, get it. Here. Sit. Good girl. Give. Good girl. Not to mention all the love and support she gives you as well. Most definitely. A little guardian angel. Correct. And with the help that she gave me, given my independence and empowering me, before i was injured, i had graduated from law school. Im not able to practice law because of my traumatic brain injury. I have cognitive deficits. So with the help that shes given me, i was just recently returned from afghanistan last year with operation proper exit to empower other veterans overseas, that whenever theyre going through combat, or maybe if its a crisis back at home, a love triangle or maybe financial difficulties, ask for help. Help is there. If it is a service dog or if you just need special assistance to get through that hump. These are very special dogs, obviously. Whats the training process like for this . Its a really extensive training process that takes multiple months. Thats one of the things that were supporting. Theres really an education piece of this to veterans. And so were enlisting our 53,000 associates in our stores to educate veterans when theyre in our stores. We have got materials. Because a lot of veterans dont understand that service dogs can have a big help, or they may be embarrassed to ask for help. We really want to engage with them and couldnt be more proud to be doing this with petsmart for patriots. Its an incredible program. With your help, the word is getting out. One in five americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, making it most common form of cancer in the united states. 44yearold Jennifer Stanford was fortunate enough to catch her condition early on. Heres her story. Growing up in florida, i was always in the sun. I spent my weekends at the beach. We moved to new jersey when i was 16 and i continued to love the beach and the pool. I even started indoor tanning before vacations to get base tan everyone thinks protects you from burning. As an adult, i loved golf. I started wearing visors to protect my face, but they would slide down exposing my forehead. 2008, a scab appeared on my hairline. One trip to the dermatologist and we discovered i had basal cell carcinoma. It has been treated with surgery. I caught it early but it could have become deeper and bigger. If there is one thing i could have done earlier in my life it is wear sunscreen. I want people to know the importance of being responsible when out in the sun. It can be a matter of life or death. Both on my forehead and my back. Does it usually show up in a scab form. You can see a nonhealing pimple. Sometimes a patch that itches and doesnt go away. Sometimes you say things just have to heal. What would be normal . So four to six weeks, kathie lee. If it is not gone in six weeks, it needs to be checked out. Youve been out in the sun a lot of your life, growing up life. At what had you ever been checked for anything like that . A body check it . Yes, i go annually to see dr. Downey. Probably started that in 2000 or somewhere around there. So when i see something, i go to see her and that was why we caught it so early. What year should you start getting a full body scan . Should children get them . Children should get them if they have a lot of moles on them slurkt absolutely. People talk about i get the base tan and ill be set and less likely to have trouble later. Thats all a myth, right . Right. It is 12 times the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, the tanning bed. That whole base tan thing is ridiculous. That provides you with an spf of 2. How do you feel about the mist tans . The spray tans are fine as long as you dont have asthma. If you have asthma, it can set you off. One of my patients had to go to the hospital. Did you ever think about the sun issues when you were growing up . Was that ever an issue . Did you use any sunscreen . I did. But not to the degree i do now. You probably used it once but didnt reapply. There is a genetic component to this . It runs in families sometimes. You see some people with more skin cancers year after year. So with somebody like jennifer, i want to see her two or three times a year. What about these things . Are these the right stuff we should be using. This is great. The Skin Cancer Foundation says anything with an spf above 30. The neutrogena is spf of 55. The copper tone, tried and true, spf of 50. All three are great. Every two hours. As College Graduates celebrate their achievements with pomp and circumstance, the question on every parents mind is will the Financial Investment pay off, with a job offer. That would be nice. Hello, everybody. Hello. It is such a panicky feeling. Since you graduated from college, the world has changed. Not for kids anymore. They can go home and sit on the cup of and play video games and go drinking. Is that part of the issue, is that our parents are saying, you know, i know its tough, you can stay here, part of it that there is not really a need to run out . I think there is a lot of resources out there, and parents, it is very different than when they graduated from college. You can use you can use social media now to get jobs. You can go online and use alumni netwo networks. So much out there, maybe the parents dont know about this. Are they the jobs you want . I dont know if thats relevant. We need to get the kids working. Remember you start 50 years ago, start in the mail room and walk your way up. We miss that. What happened to that . A lot of kids dont want certain jobs, i think. There is some of that. They feel like it is beneath them. Parents are the e word, enablers. Yes, they are. Ill call my friend and see if i can get you an interview. Make the kid pick up the phone and call the friend and say im bob or judys son, i just graduated, can i come talk to you . A lot of parents are anxious for their children to get jobs. Sometimes parents do. We know here, theyll call, what should what do you do . Is that a good plan or bad plan for a parent to reach out . I think, first of all, it has got to be in the students hands because theyre the ones that are graduating, theyre the ones that have the theyre always relying on somebody else, theyre never going to be able to be independent about this. They have to own the process and a parent might be able to get your foot in the door, but they wont keep you in that door. That student has to make sure they have the skills and they can work hard. Parents a companies are looking to hire people with grit. Do you go online. To get a job . To get a job. Pick up the phone. They dont know how to pick up the phone and talk, they only text and email. We got this great social media tool called linkedin. They can find all their parents friends and who is connected to whom. And when i graduated from college, you go to the library. Now it is all in your house. Put timelines, put parameters for these kids. Who are you calling . You can call up your friends parents, a lot of people. I think you could also go online. Linkedin has their university pages. You can connect with other alumni from your school and see what alumni they work for and see what their trajectory was and also schools have their own alumni networks. They have newsletters, their own online calendars with Networking Events and volunteer opportunities. Great way to connect with other alums. Isnt it often the case that there is maybe one job for every ten people or 20 or 30 people looking for that job . There is you can only marry one person too. You dont stop asking people out, right . I think we really got to think about this. You can only marry one person . Im not divorced, okay. The day is young. At one time. But the fact of the matter is pick up the phone and call people and say i want to meet with you. Im not looking for a job, but i want to pick your brain and get your advice for what i should do. A lot of kids post pictures on social media and some people who are looking to hire will actually google a kid and not is that the case . Last year in 2013 there was a Career Builder survey that showed that hiring managers did not hire 43 of the people they came across just because of what they found online. So it was very important to manage your profile, your twitter accounts. If youre going to post it, make sure it posts the grandma test. You dont want grandma to see it what if grandma is a hooker. It crystallizes and i can actually slowly mackke a candle. You see who makes the taller ones. Little crystals at the bottom there, they start the crystallization, same way the snowflakes are made in the sky, so pieces of dust, soot, salt and actually natural bacteria lets that happen.
