And its once again our top story. This ongoing search for possible debris from flight 370. It has been 14 days since that plane disappeared. Still, no solid answers, just questions. Nbcs tom costello has this mornings newest developments. Tom, good morning. Good morning, savannah. Search teams have been looking in this area, and so far, nothing. Even as they go deep into the indian ocean, theyve spotted nothing. Theyre looking, of course, for the two objects spotted on satellite right here, about 1,500 miles or so off the coast of australia. The concern is that those issues, those items may have shifted dramatically with the ocean currents. And so now the australians say in this area right here, where theyre focusing, theyre going to be looking more at human spotting rather than using radar looking for any debris on the ocean surface. Reporter the question this morning, are the remains of flight 370 somewhere out there in one of the most remote corners of the earth . Did the plane simply fly until it ran out of fuel then crash into the ocean . One day after australia released these Satellite Photos of what could be floating debris, the search zone was today targeted by aircraft from australia, u. S. , and new zealand, dropping buoy markers that transmit ocean current data. The australian Prime Minister this morning. Thats the most inaccessible spot you can imagine on the face of the earth. But if there is anything down there, we will find it. We owe it to the families of those people to do no less. Reporter while the two pieces are thought to be 79 and 16 feet long, the ocean is a very big place with rolling waves. On the water itself, the Australian Naval ship success should be on site by sunday. But a norwegian cargo ship traveling through the region has already diverted with crew members ordered to keep watch. The ships captain talked by phone to a norwegian newspaper late thursday. The visibility is poor at times in every mile or two. There are fog patches. Speed is of the essence since theres now only 16 days of battery life left in those underwater locator pingers attached to the black boxes. Itll be up to ships or submarines working the area to listen carefully with underwater microphones. They would set up a search grid and they would travel through that grid listening for this frequency to locate and localize the wreckage. Reporter while the pingers may die, the black boxes should survive. Designed to withstand both the crash impact and the pressure of 20,000 feet of water. The data recorder will give us the objective parameters to look and see how the airplane was being flown, what data entry was made into the computers, when it was made. It wont tell us by who, but it will tell us when. And that may very well in all likelihood will explain this mystery. The black boxes from flight air france 447 were found in a similar depth of water two years after it crashed into the atlantic ocean. It was up to submersible vehicles to find the Critical Evidence that helped solve that mystery. There was also this from the News Conference in malaysia today. The plane was carrying a load of lithium ion batteries. Small batteries for laptops in the cargo hold. These have been known to catch fire. But the ceo of Malaysian Airlines said today they were in approved packaging. Still that announcement will likely fuel the theory that a fire couldve occurred mid flight perhaps that is why it ended up down here at the bottom of the earth. Guys, back to you. Lets take a turn now to nbcs bill neely in perth, australia where more ships have left this morning to join that search. Bill, good morning. Reporter yes, good morning, carson. From perth in western australia, the air base for a number of u. S. And australia yan scouring the ocean 1,400 miles off this coast in the most intensive search ever mounted for a missing plane. Weve had one Australian Air force plane return, another is due here any second. The crew of the first plane could see for six miles. They could not stay over the search area as long as they warrant wanted. They came back. Also returning now is a more sophisticated u. S. Poseiden surveillance plane. Hoping to do what they did yesterday which is to spend about three hours searching in the area at 5,000 feet. If they see anything, theyll dip down to 1,000 feet. Yesterday, visibility was very bad. They saw dolphins and tankers, but no debris. So hightech planes, lowtech as youve heard with crew men with binoculars on the deck of a cargo ship. But this is incredibly difficult search. One australian aviation expert said you could hardly pick a more difficult area. The search will resume tomorrow. Back to you guys in new york. Bill neely, thank you. Good morning, savannah. Greg, let me start with you. Its hard to overstate how difficult this search is. If this satellite indeed captured images of wreckage, would you expect there to be other satellite images that perhaps captured more debris . This late date, 14 days in, would you still expect there to be a large debris field somewhere in that vicinity . I would, savannah because wreckage tends to cluster. And if its moving in the same sea state, it shouldnt spread out too much. As far as the resolution on the satellite photo, you have to remember as we talked about over the past week or so, that area of the world isnt covered by the highest tech satellite. So this image while it looks better than the chinese image may not be of the best quality because the satellite that took that picture wasnt necessary to have the highest definition, if you will. The chinese have said theyre going to train a number of satellites that they have plus others are going to try to find some wreckage using some of the higher resolution satellites. We may end up Getting Better pictures from various sources over the next few days. We know, of course, that airline debris, a lot of it does, in fact, float. But one of the australians this morning raised the possibility that these pieces or some of these pieces couldve sunk in the meantime. Is that a real concern . Absolutely, savannah. Everything, i mean, when you look at clothing and suitcases, seat cushions and Everything Else as they get water logged, they get heavy. And, of course, they will submerge. Now, there is debris that will float below the surface, but not necessarily sink to the bottom of the ocean. And, of course, because of the rough sea state, you can churn it back up, have it, you know, appear on the surface occasionally and sink again. And on that point, i want to turn to bob hager. The oceanographer in the wall street journal said it well. Said you couldnt have picked a worse place in the world for the plane to have gone down if it had gone down there. The conditions are terrible. Yeah, i cant remember a place where its so remote, so difficult to get out. I think its important to tamp down public expectations here. Even the news about these pieces and whether they came from this aircraft, thats going to take some days or even more. And that doesnt lead you very far even if you find the pieces were from the plane. I was wondering about that. Lets say you find a piece of wreckage, what could it conceivably tell you about what led to this event if anything . Well, i was trying to think, tom mentioned in his piece the lithium batteries were in the cargo, could there have been fire. If this is a piece of the wing, and it might be, thats about the right size. The wing would be charred if thered been a big fire. That might tell you that. And could also say if its in the location that it ran out of fuel. But that still doesnt get it. You need those black boxes. And real quickly on that. The black boxes will ping for 30 days. That assumes their position correctly on the sea floor where you would actually hear that ping. Oh, yeah. Because wherever those boxes went down, they are heavy, itd be a long way from where the wreckage on the surface is floating. Its going to be hard to find. Well, carson, the good news is, were actually seeing Better Weather, High Pressure is right on top of this. This big area of blue. And again, down in the southern hemisphere, the circulation around high is in a counterclockwise direction. And these arrows are winds. There arent many winds around that area. And as we look at the satellite imagery, youll actually see that were going to have Better Weather moving into that area and its going to stay that way for at least the next 24 hours and well continue to watch that. Again, you can see there, clear skies, lower winds and hopefully the seas are dying down during that time. Because, obviously, thats very important as this its nighttime now, but tomorrow morning when daylight happens, theyll have pretty good weather conditions. All right, al, thank you. Such a challenging search for them. Meantime, natalies here with a big tax scam to tell us about. With tax season upon us, the government is warning taxpayers about a big tax scam. People claiming from the irs calling americans demanding money and a lot of folks have been falling for it. Nbcs Pete Williams is in washington with more on this. Pete, good morning. Good morning. In fact, the Treasury Department Inspector General says this is the largest telephone scam of its kind hes ever seen. And so far the government has received 20,000 complaints about it from people who have paid more than 1 million to whoevers behind it. People claiming to be irs agents call taxpayers and say they owe taxes. And saying unless they pay immediately, and saying it could mean losing a drivers license, a business, or being deported. In some cases, a reallooking irs phone number shows up on the caller i. D. And the caller recites part of the taxpayers actual Social Security number. Here are some of the warning signs. The irs says it makes First Contact with taxpayers by mail not by phone. Thats a tipoff. And says it never asks for payments using a Prepaid Debit Card or a wire transfer. Now, this scam actually started showing up last fall, but now it has escalated with complaints from nearly every state. Natalie . It is a very scary thing, indeed. Pete williams. Thank you. But this new jersey teenager couldnt wait. 16yearold justin got to the top early sunday morning doing what many thought was impossible. Especially after 9 11, this areas been like a fortress. I dont know how he got up there, but i dont know. Reporter Port Authority police say the teenager snuck into the construction site around 4 00 a. M. Going through a onefoot wide hole in the fence. He climbed up a scaffold to the sixth floor, rode the elevator to the 88th, then walked up a scare case to the 104th. He moved past the Security Guard described by the Port Authority as inattentive. The teen was arrested. At the former site of terror, the news unnerving new yorkers even the new mayor. Obviously its shocking and troubling and i dont know how it possibly couldve happened. Matt showed us the breathtaking vista last may. If you dont like ladders, you cant come here. As workers put the spire on top bringing it to its height of 1,776 feet. He appears to have no fear. His twitter feed shows him up on a crane and hanging from a beam. Friends say hes a fan of a training regimen of leaps and flips that can turn any location into an obstacle course. Anderson dam is not seismically safe and would only take 6. 6 quake to make it crumble f. That happens a wall of water from the reservoir would cover morgan hill and much of Silicon Valley. State and federal Officials Say the dam has to be repaired by 2018 but to do that the Water District would have to drain the reservoir. They think they would be able to safe about half of the water in there. About 7 billion gallons would go to waste. Crews would have to start work by the end of the year. A lot of people worried because of the Drought Agency well but some rain in the forecast, not this weekend. Were looking at low clouds outside. In sochi, we were used to the guy who was colorful and fun. But we sat down yesterday, it was less than 24 hours after he made this announcement. Johnny weir took center stage at this years winter games as an announcer for nbc. But he says off camera, his twoyear marriage was crumbling. Sochi was one of the hardest times in my life. When i was on the broadcasting, i escaped my own personal hell that i was living in. My husband was behaving very erratically. The majority of the time off camera, i was in tears, i was on the phone, fighting, not in a good place. Weir claims this was varnoffs first gay relationship. The two tied the knot on new years eve in 2011. But weir said they started having troubles this fall. I was losing myself by being married to my husband. I was losing my objectives in life. I was very isolated from the world, from my marriage. Earlier this month, the couple appeared in a new jersey court where weir faced charges of biting him during a domestic dispute. What went on there . What can you tell me . I was defending myself on that night. We were fighting in such a terrible way. And it did get physical that night. And it was very unfortunate things went the way they did because Domestic Violence is never the way to go. Domestic violence is never the answer. A judge dismissed the case at their request. The biting incident, was that the only physical altercation that ever took place . The only time you had to defend yourself physically . Or was this kind of one in a chain . It was usually good humored wrestling and stuff. But a few times, of course, it did get physical. You know, some of my closest friends have seen him hit me before. Closed fist . Open hand, slap or punch . Ive been, you know, slapped, but slapping is enough for me. In a statement to access hollywood, a rep said, quote, there was a Domestic Violence incident, johnny was arrested. That case was dropped by victor at the urging of johnny. The person who bit someone was johnny. His rep added it is our extreme desire this divorce could have been handled amicably. Victor and i have been having trouble for quite some time. Well begin with salon owner ted gibson. Teds up in our makeup room. We p want to know what were doing wrong when it comes to shampooing and conditioning our hair and show us the right way to do it. Most women are making the wrong choices when theyre shampooing their hair. Make sure you actually start at the scalp. Apply 1 4 inch of shampoo as ive done in my hands. You want to apply it to the scalp starting at the temples working up to the top of the head, then to the nape, back down and repeat if you need to. Ladies, make sure that you do not put shampoo on your hair. Only shampoo your scalp if you have to shampoo every single day. And watch this. This is how its done. You want to shampoo the scalp from the temples up to the top of the head, then all the way back to the nape, then back up and back down again. Again, keep it off of the ends of your hair. Because the ends of your hairdo not need the shampoo. Whats really, really important is to make sure you concentrate the shampoo at the scalp. And if you decide youre going to condition your hair, do it opposite. So condition from your ends of your hair and work your way up. Most women tend to talk about if their hair gets oily and greasy, its because their hair actually is their scalp is actually greasy. Not their hair. Always concentrate on shampooing the scalp and not the hair. Shampoo shampoo the scalp, condition the hair. Exactly. Got it. Dont do the big lather thing like the shampoo commercial. When you have it piled up on top of your head. But at the same time, whats happening is that shampoo is kind of detergent. Its going to dry out your hair. Your hair does not need to be shampooed every single day. Thank you so much. Now, the right and wrong way to do blush and eyeliner, jen is here, alex is going to help us out. How are we putting eyeliner on wrong . The mistake most people make. First off, they try to do one line in one shot. And the other mistake is placement. Either too high above the lashes or too low under the lashes. And that gives you that scarey look. Can you show us on alex . Youve got a few kinds. Theres so many different kinds. I like a liquid liner. I think its easy. Especially when its a short, stubby liner. Youll see alex will demo with this one. You can hold it horizontally close to your face. You can rest your face. A thin end. A thin point. And youre going to start from the inner corner on the lower lash line. Thats what helps you with placement for the top. Kind of gives you a border. Kind of putting it on the inside of her eye, almost. You almost want to put it on the root of your lashes. I feel like your lashes should move as youre applying. You know youre getting it on the root. Start on the inner corner, go about half way, then give yourself a moment, then go to the outer corner of the bottom lash line. Okay. Then you see the top next and work your way in. Say start on the inner corner for the top . And go half way to just right above your pupil. Yeah. Then shell start from the outside and work in. And the reason you do it that way because the skin will start to pull. If you do one line, your skin is going to start to wrinkle underneath the liner. That gives you that start with the inner eye, outer eye and finish in the middle. Meet in the middle. And again, right on the lash root. Use the lashes. 30 seconds for blush. So placement. People put blush in the wrong place. Thats what makes you look crazy. The right way is to find the apple of your cheek. Make a big smile so it sticks out. And this is a cream. I love cream blush. Dab it on the apple and work your way up a little bit to get extra color to lift the face. The reason you start on the apple, its going to give you the most color there and the leftover works up your cheek. Would you do powder on top of it . Or before . I get the order wrong. Well, i sometimes like to put it on after to get a good lit from within glow. Also if you put on too much, you can put moisturizer over it. Well, a lot of people dont like tax time, of course. But most people will not see significant changes from the tax laws in terms of taxes. Its the highend earners that are going to get hit harder. Lets break it down into categories and give tax advice. Starting with recently married. Do you file separately or jointly . Well, you need to do it both ways to see whats the best savings for you. But generally, working couple, its a greater savings if you filing married jointly. Itemizing your deductions. A lot of single people take the standard deduction. You want to see if you can itemize. All right. Lets keep it moving. Parenting. Parents are preoccupied, maybe new babies, give us idea and tax breaks they can do if youre new parents. You get a personal exemption, 3,900, and then theres credits you want to look at, as well, the child tax credit, 1,000 for your child 16 or under. There are some phaseouts depending on your income. But thats one to look at. Dependent care credit, also something to look at if you paid for day care or for at home care or even summer day camp while youre working, you need someone to care for your kids. Think about that. Good to know. What about longer term, thinking about your kid in college, what should you know about that . Thats where the American Opportunity credit comes in. You want to look at that as an opportunity credit of about 2,500 you could qualify for the first four years. There are other ones, lifetime learning credit, theres a division and fee deduction. But this is often the American Opportunity credit, the one that a lot of parents want to go for first. Good to know for new parents. And finally, retirement, walk us through retirement, tax breaks. Just for people who are leading into their retirement. Well, the first thing to remember is april 15th is the deadline. But theres still time to put money in a traditional i. R. A. Use that catchup contribution, put in 6,500. Everyone else its 5,500. You may want to roll over some of your money into a roth i. R. A. You take that money out in retirement tax free. And for seniors, very important to think about the Health Care Expenses that youve accumulated. You still get to use that lower threshold of 7. 5 of your adjusted gross income in terms of deducting the medical expenses. Everyone else, its gone up 10 . We asked our viewers to write in. Tamron, what do you got for us . Couple of questions. The first one from jodi. She says my husband is laid off, so we took an i. R. A. Withdrawal. Can we claim it as a hardship withdrawal . Well, actually, in terms of the ira tax rules, theres no such thing as a hardship withdrawal. And any money you take out of a traditional i. R. A. , unfortunately, youve got to pay taxes on that money. Thats taxable income. So youre going to have to pay a penalty if you took it out early, probably. There are just a few exceptions to that. And im happy to say good news, too. Good news, carson and savannah. So many people wondered how to stop this underground online world. So in a moment, were going to talk about a program working to support parents. But first, a reminder of what were talking about. Reiters cataloged 5,000 posts on Message Boards and went looking for the one girl who was advertised more than any other. Shes too much for us. Reporter last fall, reiters reporter megan tooey showed online messages, people agreeing to hand over children at truck stops or diners. This is a family that sent their adoptive daughter to three other families and theyre back here at the Group Seeking out a fourth. This is the face behind those messages. Nita was adopted from haiti by a idaho family, but after a tough first year, her parents went looking online for someone to take nita in. They could have been murderers or like killers, you dont know those people. And i could have been dead. Reporter she was shipped between four different families over two years. She says in this home, she was physically and verbally abused and that other children told her they were being sexually abused by the father. And when she confided in an adult, she was put on a plane again. That father is awaiting trial and has pled not guilty. Each time she was passed on, the pain grew deeper. I just felt alone and unworthy, unloved. Like i hated myself. No one in the adoption world wants a child to feel that way. Many told us the real issue was a lack of support for parents who bring a child home from overseas and then struggle. I dont want them to be feeling theres no one out there that can help them. Reporter dr. Mary stat says it doesnt have to be that way. She founded cincinnati Childrens International Adoption Center to give adoptive parents like shelly and john a safety net. Braeden and kyle were adopted from guatemala and russia. What do you think reporter therapists work with parents before, during and after an adoption when behavioral issues may surface unexpectedly. They may not be really loving that child at that point. And we really want them to understand that is pretty normal. Youre telling them its okay to feel that way. It is okay. The family comes to see therapists twice a month. Its fabulous. Dr. Stat says internationally adopted kids have often suffered trauma or been neglected which can lead to anxiety, anger, or acting out. Tisha is watching through a twoway mirror and giving mom tips through an ear piece. Look how eager he is to help. They are teaching the kids skills they need to get through things. But theyre also coaching us as parents. A mother of three adopted children herself, dr. Stat wants her program to be a model. We really spent, you know, the past 15 years building a program that really is there to help families throughout their life. Braeden celebrated his eighth birthday last week. It is the longest ride youll ever take and also the most satisfying and loving ride youll ever take and im so glad we did it. Great. Thats nice. Thats a great program. Are there more . A Port Authority police say he snuck into the construction site around 4 00 a. M. Sunday going through a 1footwide hole in the fence, climbed up the scaffold to the 6th floor. He was able to convince the elevator person to allow him to go up to the 88th floor. How is that possible . Then he walked up the staircase to the 104th floor. He got past a Security Guard who its been reported was sleeping, Port Authority says he was inattentive and climbed a ladder to the antenna all the way to the top he was arrested at 6 00 a. M. After being there for two hours. Unencumbered, unaccompanied. Thats crazy. Apparently his friends reportedly said they had gone there and scouted it out a couple of times previously. These pictures of him. Hes hanging on a crane hanging from a beam. I mean, this stuff so dangerous. Yeah. So, so dangerous. Yeah. Its apparently stuff his friends say he loves to do. It is sherman, the most brilliant creature the world has ever known and his adopted human son sherman. I love the relationship between the two of them. It is about time travel. For me, it is about kind of, you know, experiencing history in a fun way, which can get kids to get engaged with history, thats a winner. Theyre learning something too. Yes. They are. They really do get a little broad scope, they go see Leonardo Da Vinci and george washington. Gets kids curious. It is a nice family story because families can look like anything. My dog can adopt a boy. I love the theme of adoption between the two of them, that a dog can adopt a little boy, but a little boy can adopt a dog. It was just a really sweet movie anything goes today. The last one is called the birders guide to everything. A little more mature. For tweens, i guess. Tell me about that. The coming of age story available on demand today. It is kind of wants to be stand by me, a teen grieving the loss of his mother, who takes his friends on a journey to find a rare bird. And so it is really about dealing with emotions. A lot of cursing in it, though. There is . There is a character who is, like, 16, and has raging hormones. For me, that character made it i didnt it didnt bother me. I thought was a tender coming of age story and hit on the loss and this childs father is remarrying and the emotions that go through that, are they addressing them. A very real scenario. 15 and up. Im a little more conservative than you. I say 12 and up. I didnt watch with my 10yearold. I thought it was to to watch the beginning, i thought it was too old for him, i would say anywhere from 14 and above. But i think i told my nephews they should go watch it.
