Records could be set in some two dozen major cities from texas to the midwest. Lets get to nbcs dylan dreyer. Shes braving the elements in green bay, wisconsin. Good morning to you. Reporter oh, good morning, savannah. I can say with 100 certainty, i have never experienced cold like this in my life. It is 10 below here in green bay. But with this wind, it feels like its 40 degrees below zero. This is a deep freeze we havent seen in decades. And its only getting colder. And this is just miserably cold and extremely dangerous for anyone to be outside. The big question, how low can we go . Sub zero temperatures shattering records sending us into the big chill. These temperatures out there will be lower than whats in your freezer. In many states, officials are warning people to stay inside and off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Over the next couple of days, cities in the midwest and along the east coast could see temperatures drop 30 to 50 degrees with wind chills hitting 50 to 60 degrees below zero. If you must get out on the roads this arctic blast makes deicing your car almost impossible. Real slippery, icy. People falling, we almost fell. Reporter the threat of dangerously cold temperatures forced minneapolis Public Schools to close for the first time in 17 years. Weve never experienced weather this cold ever. Reporter classes are also canceled in chicago, nicknamed chiberia because of the brutally cold conditions there. Air travel is already a nightmare in many regions and getting worse with thousands of Flights Canceled or delayed. A few hearty souls are finding alternative ways around. Easier to get around on this than in a car or truck. Reporter and here in green bay, tailgaters found ways to keep warm in the frozen tundra. Two grills going. One for warmth. One for the feet, one for the food. Reporter now the bitter cold did lead to a bitter end for the packers. They lost here to San Francisco at Lambeau Field. We are seeing mild temperatures out east, but this cold is headed that way. Al, what is most interesting is how far south this arctic blast is going to stretch. Thats right. All the way down atlanta, down into florida. Dylan, make sure you get inside really quickly. Thanks so much. So far, over 26 states have wind chill warnings or advisories or watches. From the dakotas to texas into the new england area. This is part of what is known as the polar vortex. This vortex is normally up around the north pole. It is an arctic hurricane that cold air funneling down all the way as far south as florida and it is dangerously cold. We are going to continue to watch. Look at the current temperatures. It feels like it is 43 below in minneapolis. 41 below in chicago. Cincinnati, 21 below. New york, 55. Not so fast. By tomorrow, it will be9. 43 below in chicago. Marquette, 39. Memphis will feel like 11. Atlanta at 6 below. Temperatures start to moderate a bit, but good news is we will get a bit of a break as the arctic air and the polar vortex moves up to the north. The good news is the arctic air will retreat and we get more of a seasonal jet stream from west to east. Cleveland, 39. Chicago, 36. New york, 41. Charleston, looking at a temperature of 69. Minneapolis, warming up to 35 degrees. Thats good news, savannah. But a while to get there, al. Thank you. There are important things to protect your family. Lets turn to dr. Nancy snyderman. Nancy, good morning. Were talking about it being this cold. Exposed flesh in a matter of minutes can result in frostbite. Within a few minutes, youll start to see skin changes. Al said within 7 to 10 minutes, you can get frost bite. You think its going to happen to somebody else. First, dress appropriately. The elderly and children are most at risk because they dont thermoregulate as well. Dress in layers. That traps in warm air and heat. Loose layers. Not tight things that will constrict blood vessels. Expose all the areas in your body, fingers, im a big believer in mittens, get the warmers, and men, put something on your head. Little kids, too, cover your head. And hypothermia, real concern with the wind chills in the midwest and the northeast. This isnt just getting cold. This is when your core body temperature drops. If your normal temperature is 98. 6, were talking about temperatures dropping to 95, 96 degrees. And thats when you start to see organs slow down. People can have slurred speech, be confused, almost intoxicated or having a stroke. If thats a concern, you get someone to a warm area, but then to a hospital because sometimes it takes warm, intravenous fluids to warm up the whole body. People about to get in their car and commute to work. Safety tips for that. Think like a girl scout. Blankets, flashlights. You can flash down people if you need it. Water, that sounds counter intuitive. No alcohol because that dilates blood vessels. A bag of kitty litter you can throw on the back of a tire if you get stuck. Plan like youre going camping except you arent. Put it in a tub thats safe. If you plan ahead, youll be fine. If you dont have to go out, dont go out. Thank you so much. Over to matt. All right. Thanks very much. Theres new developments in the bitter fight over a young girl declared brain dead but kept on a ventilator. Overnight, she was released into the care of her mother. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer is in california with more. Hi, miguel. Reporter matt, good morning. After she was admitted to the hospital back on december 9th, she was moved from here late last night. Her family has chose not to release the name of the new facility. Instead saying she has a Second Chance at life. Reporter declared brain dead for a month, jahi was first released to the coroners sunday night. The 13yearolds body then handed over to the custody of her mother only after a death certificate was issued. The hardest thing for my sister to do, for any parent to have to do, which is to go up there and fill out an application for a death certificate for your child. Especially when your child is living. After undergoing a complex tonsillectomy in oakland, jahi fell into cardiac arrest. A team of doctors said she was gone. With her heart still beating with help from a ventilator, her mother believes jahi is alive. A court order gave her family until tomorrow to move her to a longterm care facility. Now they must find a doctor to insert a breathing and feeding tube. Procedures Childrens Hospital said it would not perform because it would be unethical, they say, to operate on someone who is deceased. In a statement, Childrens Hospital says, our hearts go out to the family as they grieve for this sad situation, and we wish them closure and peace. A little girl who doctors have declared dead, but whose family says is still very much alive. Jahis family says they are not releasing the name of the new facility for privacy and safety concerns. But in a few hours, they say she should be receiving permanent care. Matt, savannah . Miguel, thank you very much. Now we move to a story breaking in the world of politics this morning. Liz cheney, the eldest daughter of former Vice President dick cheney, has abruptly dropped out of the wyoming Republican Senate primary. The reason shes giving is not political. In a statement, liz cheney says to nbc news, Serious Health issues have recently arisen in our family, and under the circumstances, i have decided to discontinue my campaign. Cheney goes on to reference her children saying their future and wellbeing is her overriding priority. Her famous name and fierce ambition were not enough. Sources tell nbc news that liz cheney will drop out of wyomings Republican Senate primary. Im announcing today that i am indeed going to be a candidate for the United States senate for wyoming in 2014. Reporter the 47yearold is a married mother of five, former state Department Official and loyal defender of her father, the former Vice President. Will get out and campaign for her . Ill do all i can. Reporter liz cheney rattled wyoming politics by attempting to knock out a wellliked conservative, senator mike enzi, running for a fourth time. I believe it is necessary for a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate. Reporter the states gop establishment did not back her, cheney was accused of being a carpetbagger, moving her family in wyoming in 2012 after decades in the d. C. Suburbs. Then her campaign exposed a stunningly public family feud over samesex marriage. When sister mary cheney and marys wife, heather poe, criticized lizs opposition to gay marriage, saying she had supported their union in the past. The rift so damaging that dick and lynn cheney released a Public Statement saying that liz cheney has always believed in the traditional definition of marriage. And in a statement, liz cheney does not explain the details of this Serious Health issue. As of this morning, all of those games hard fought and costly gains gains hard fought and costly gains have been wiped out. Islamic militant with direct ties to al qaeda celebrated the takedown of fallujah. Armed fighters freely roam the streets. As their commanders pledge to punish anyone who supports the government in baghdad. For the first time today, iraqi forces have launched a counterattack. Go reporter fallujah saw the bloodiest battles of the iraq war. 146 americans were killed liberating the city. In the past year, al qaeda has struck back with a vengeance. Al qaedaled bombings have killed nearly 8,000 iraqis, highest death toll in six years. The u. S. Withdrew all combat forces from iraq two years ago. The twinengine private jet slipped and then burst into flames as it tried to land at the airport. Officials say all three people who were on board were from mexico. Winds were gusting up to 35 Miles Per Hour at the time of the crash. Former nba star Dennis Rodman is once again back in north korea. Rodman arrived in pyongyang this morning. He and other former nba players are scheduled to take part in an exhibition game to celebrate kim jonguns 30th birthday. Behind me is the stadium where the Opening Ceremony will take place. Performers right now are inside of it rehearsing. Security has been overshadowing the buildup to these games, but russian officials insist, they will be safe. Reporter just one month to go until the sochi olympics and russia does seem ready. Theres snow, and in case it gets warmer, russia has 1 million cubic meters of it frozen in reserves. The stadiums are built, although theres still some construction. The head of sochi 2014 told us russia is on schedule. Yes, no doubt. Were absolutely ready. We were training, learning for seven years. The official clothing for the games is out, too. Sochi was once a sleepy, soviet retreat between the mountains and black sea. Its been completely transformed. Russia didnt have a ski village at the base of the slopes outside sochi, so it built one. This entire town is brand new. So are hundreds of miles of roads and train tracks leading here with more than 50 billion spent so far, many think this is the most expensive olympics ever. This is Vladimir Putins baby. Hes been testing out the venues. These games may be as much about showing that the russian bear is out of hibernation as they are about sports. But terrorism has come back to russia. Two attacks just last month. And the militant leader of the muslim north caucuses says the games are a target. Russias response is hard to miss. Tens of thousands of police and intelligence agents have descended on sochi, watching for terrorists. And according to investigative journalists, watching everyone who comes here after the government last november passed a decree to collect logs of data. Your computers and phones are going to be tapped, officially . Yes. All your communications will be exposed to the russian secret services. Reporter sochi will put russia back on the world stage, getting ready for the sports may prove to be the easy part. And tomorrow, security restrictions will be tightened even further. But these olympics, the expectations have to be lowered. We are going to see new events, some new sports we havent seen in olympic competition before. Slope style, something that youve done a lot as a kid, i know. No, of course. I think the president of the ioc should be johnny knoxville, because basically this stuff is just jackass stuff they invented and called olympic sports. You mean that in the nicest possible way. The kindest way. We could see shaun white take the slopes in slope style. Thats the last youre going to say about it. Until february 5th. But the president ial Helicopter Squadron also flies the Vice President as well as foreign heads of state, even the pope when they travel here. And recently, nbc news was invited onboard. 30 miles south of washington, d. C. , this highsecurity hangar is called the cage. Its home to the fleet of unmistakable whitetopped aircraft, the helicopters designed to fly the president known as marine one. Its not a single helicopter, but more than 30 aircraft in all. This exclusive squadron is called hmx1, a hand picked team of more than 700 pilots, specialists and mechanics, like casey kirkpatrick. Among the things you check is the door. Yes. This is very important. The president sits right on the other side of this door. Reporter marine ones been shuttling president s since Dwight Eisenhower was in office. This is where Richard Nixon waved goodbye and george w. Brought in his friend. 137 trips last year alone. The best thing i do is stand out there and salute him as the crew chief. Thats the greatest honor for me. Staff Sergeant Jason diaz is one of four marine one crew chiefs, elected by his peers and responsible for the entire helicopter. Every minute detail is closely inspected, checking the engine, polishing the exterior, manicuring the carpet inside. The squadron builds some of the parts. The final touch, the president ial seal. What Little Details are you looking for . Everything has to be picture perfect. I look it over. Once everybodys done, i look it over, make sure its the way i want it. And if theres even the tiniest little smudge, i go back over and say, no, you need to redo that. Not just anyone can fly the president. After three years of training, only four pilots make it to marine one. Among this years class, major nate storm. Theres so much riding on that. The most powerful man in the world is riding in the back of your helicopter. It is pretty stressful. That training includes hours inside a flight simulator. It challenges pilots to execute a precise landing. Major storm briefly handed me the controls. Sorry. The simulator has a tendency to drift to the left. Next time, remind me to take my dramamine. And nbc news was given access onboard as the marine one crew practiced takeoffs and landings with the president away. Reporter flying 200 feet above the ground, combined to a narrow flight path winding around some of the capitals iconic landmarks. Right beside the jefferson memorial, right turn behind the washington monument. Thatll take your breath away. This is what the faa refers to as prohibited air space. The only aircraft allowed in this zone is marine one. Reporter and pilots rehearse each flight before picking up the president. The biggest challenge, the final approach and landing surrounded by trees on both sides, pilots say its like flying between skyscrapers in manhattan. You feel like youre putting a pretty big helicopter in a tiny avenue. Marine one must line up perfectly with three red disks on the ground. Putting it on the board pilots call it with cameras rolling and the worlds most powerful passenger onboard. And the president ial helicopters also have unique security features that remain top secret. One of the things that struck me, savannah, onboard was how quiet it was. You can carry on a conversation very differently than on a normal helicopter or plane. Six times you got a moment of a sense of what it feels like to be president. Well, the family of a 13yearold girl declared brain dead removed her from a oakland, california, hospital overnight. Jahi mcmath declared brain dead after she went into cardiac arrest following a complex tonsillectomy last month. Her mother believes jahi is still alive. The court order gave the family until tomorrow to move jahi to a longterm care facility willing to insert breathing and feeding tubes. Police appear to be making headway against a brutal type of crime terrorizing people. Good morning, natalie. The man believed to be behind a string of knockout assaults has been arrested and charged. But given the random and sudden violence of this trend, many people are still on edge. Reporter a suspect in a string of dangerous and disturbing knockout assaults like these posted online is under arrest this morning. In part, due to this Police Sketch released after a string of attacks throughout brooklyn. Absolutely insane. Its scary, scaring the daylights out of people. 35yearold Barry Baldwin faces ten charges, including six of assault. Most of the attacks were against jewish women, two of whom were 78 years old. The daughter of one of those women spoke to nbc new york. I wanted the police to do something about it. And i want the full extent of the law to be exercised. Reporter the arrest in these horrifying crimes comes just a month after another arrest in a separate incident also targeting an Orthodox Jewish man in brooklyn. Its horrible. Its disgusting, horrible in any neighborhood. This is hate, this is sick. This is beyond comprehension. Reporter the rash of vicious attacks that has taken place all across the country. Theyre usually referred to as part of a game. But Community Leaders and Law Enforcement argue this trend is closer to the violence seen in gang initiations that has existed for decades. And in indianapolis, so far, they have picked up 26 inches of snow, 17 plus. Thats more than they get for the entire season. And weve got a lot more winter to go. They see as a chance to invent, a chance to run and giggle and laugh. For so many kids, going outside is not an option. Theres nowhere to go or it is not safe. I see neighborhoods that are desolate or broken. I would love to do something that brought joy to kids who have too little of it. I want to go to a neighborhood where people dont have a lot. And i want to take what is perhaps an eyesore in that neighborhood, a vacant lot, you know, broken bottles, rocks, graffiti and get a community to get motivated, get people to come out of their homes and put gloves on and boots. I want to get shovels and rakes. And i want to get children to inspire us, tell us what their dreams are. The kids themselves will be invested. Theyll have a piece of this property and ownership of this park. And after its been transformed from rubble, i want to be there as we swing that gate open for the first time. And their eyes light up like christmas morning. I hope when people say what were able to do, they look at it and think why couldnt i see that . Temperatures in the Single Digits by this time tomorrow morning. Its like a roller coaster because friday was brutally cold here, then it got warmer over the weekend and now back down. Dropping down to ten tomorrow. Eight degrees, ten degrees. To the point where there was a train on its way to kalamazoo, michigan, it froze. They had to send another train to pick it up. We havent seen cold like this in over 20, 30 years. If a train traveling yeah. Coming up, two of the most sought after young stars in hollywood, Allison Williams and carey mulligan. And then, do you avoid fast food to try to stick to a diet . Well, well meet a guy who ate it every day for 90 days. He dropped weight and even lowered his cholesterol. Well tell you what he ate. Exactly right. But first, how about a check of the weather. Lets show you what weve got going on. Youll see basically for the week ahead, much of the country going to be way below normal, only above normal, going to be right along the california coast. Weve got snow across the great lakes for the early part of the week. Rain moving into the pacific northwest. As we get into the middle part of the week, we stay in that deep freeze for the eastern 2 3 of the country, above normal as you get out west as the jet stream moves up to the north out there. Then by the latter part of the week, guess what, finally sweet relief. Well start to see some warmer temperatures in the east, some lake effect snow still hanging around. Wet weather through the southeast and midatlantic states. Normal through the southwest and look for some showers in the pacific northwest. Hey, good monday morning to you. The time now 8 32. Temperatures arent that bad. Its not too cold out there this morning. 43 degrees in san jose. 43 for oakland and 48 in San Francisco. Thats going to be the story for today. Clouds are actually going to increase as we head throughout this afternoon. Highs will be comfortable. Look at these numbers. Wrapping up to about 63 degrees in San Francisco today. 64 out in the north bay. 66 right here in the south bay. As we head through tomorrow, much cooler weather on the way. Well have your sevenday in just a few moments. And thats your latest weather. I dont know about you, but im feeling like an egg mcmuffin. Good segue. And heres a question, could you eat mcdonalds all day, every day . Well, Morgan Sperlock tried it in his documentary. Now a decade later, another man has given it a shot with drastically different results. He actually lost weight. And were going to talk to him in a moment. But first, part of his documented journey. One of the alarming statistics that has risen its ugly head is obesity and weight problems. John sizna embarked on an experiment. Were going to try to replicate the super size me documentary only the opposite. He walked 45 minutes a day and followed a strict 2,000 calorie diet using the recommended daily allowances for ca carbohydrates, sugar and fat. All the meals had to be from mcdonalds. Anything we might need to make changes with . His students planned his meals and his local mcdonalds donated the food. The results might surprise you. John says he lost 4 inches on his hips and 7 on his stomach. His cholesterol level went down from 249 to 170. As for his weight, john lost 37 pounds. And john is with us now along with today contributor and registered dietitian joy bauer. Hi. Well talk about your meal choices in a second. 54 years old, started out at 280 pounds, but the big thing that jumped out to me, you started walking 45 minutes a day. Well, i did. What was challenging and surprising to me, when i started that first day, i thought i was going to die. I couldnt even walk 45 minutes carrying that 280 pounds. And as you can see, if id gotten any bigger, i would probably have to avoid harpoons. Well, youre getting a lot of attention because you ate strictly at mcdonalds. Not only did you lose weight, but your cholesterol level dropped. Did that surprise you . Well, what was surprising in this. Everyones paying attention to the weight loss. Thats not the big deal. I knew i was going to lose weight. Math tells you, if you only eat 2,000 calories a day, your body has to use more than that to operate. I knew i was going to lose it. What came out really nice in this experiment was the blood levels. I was so concerned about it, we took my blood halfway through it and told the kids. Now, even though ive lost like 20 pounds, if this blood level stuff doesnt come back good, were pulling the plug. Im not surprised. If you lose weight and youre overweight to begin with, normally your cholesterol, your blood sugar, they will come down, too. And i think this isnt really the mcdonalds diet. I think what he proved is its not where you eat, its what you eat. You eat less, move more, it comes off. However, lets put off some of his menus here and give you an idea of the kinds of things that john was choosing every day. Anything jump out at you here, joy . Well, diet coke in the morning for breakfast is not necessarily the greatest thing. The calories always maxed out at 2,000. Which is great. Because it encouraged weight loss. He went out of the way to pick things that were healthier when you consider what mcdonalds offers. But one glaring red flag is the salt he was taking in on a daytoday basis was more than double of whats recommended. Thats worrisome. I think this brings up the point that mcdonalds and other fast food restaurants have more Healthy Options available than they had at the time of supersize me. But did you have the big mac . Did you go for the big calorie items . Thats a great point. Because, yes, i did. In the last three to four weeks as youve seen from the menus, i did start eating big mac meals and quarter pounder meals. And the kids came up and said, weve got a problem. If youre going to eat these highcaloric sandwiches, we cant stay in the recommended daily announces of the 15 nutrients were tracking. And i said, kids, thats where choice comes in. Are you going to keep me at 2,000 calories . And are we going to jeopardize the health . Or stay at the health and jeopardize the calories . And youll find the last three weeks i wasnt able to eat 2,000 calories, it was 1,750 or 1,800. That was beautiful about the kids. They put these menus together. First of all, i wish i had a teacher like you. You make it interesting. Thats great. And you told joy after the segment here, youre hungry, youre going to find a mcdonalds . Really . Well, im on the second part of it. The first part is done, but its going so well. One of the things i want to try differently is continue with the diet through march 15th but now do exercise of what im capable of doing. One of the neat things about the first 90 days is the fact that we have made this simple. Not everybody can jog or lift weights, but everybody can walk. Heres what i would like for his second experiment. I want to show him how to do this with 2,000 calories a day with no fast food. All right. I think hell feel markedly better. She had it all together, everything going her way. And you could look at this as a long progression of her unraveling. Yes, i think part of it is that shes so intensely trying not to unravel that it makes it unravel more quickly in a way. Like if you pull something in a sweater and the whole thing comes apart. I think shell need to fall apart completely before she can become a human being in a functioning way. I was thinking about it this morning. Whats the moral of the story, the lesson there . Is there one . I think the lesson is a warning against perfectionism, that it can work against you if you dont forgive yourself. The Little Things, unique if you want to call them flaws, you may. I think marney definitely will have to learn to love the parts of herself that arent perfect and acknowledge them. That would be a good start. The last time you were here, you said it was so realistic, so like the lives of the 20s, it was like looking in a fun house mirror. Im not 1,000 years old, but im shocked by what happened. Okay. But i feel 1,000 when i watch it because im shocked by some of the behavior. You think its realistic . I do. But i think its very specific. So i think in its specificity applying to a broad number of people. But it has just portraying each girl individually and their specific experiences. And so then i think viewers can pick and choose from things and say, oh, ive done what hannah just did, never done what shes doing just now, ive done what marneys about to do. The writer and creator of this, shes a friend of yours. Yeah. She holds your destiny in her hands. Its so true. Isnt it you should be really nice to her. She could make you do crazy things. Thats a compliment. On our show when youre given a scene thats crazy and challenging and terrifying and strange, thats a huge compliment. Thats the writer saying we think you can pull this off, please dont prove us wrong. And so i take that with a lot of pride now. In this season, i had many of those moments. And you said in a recent interview that the thought of singing in front of a camera is terrifying. I have three good ones to share this morning. Awesome comfort food. Were going to start with a turkey burger. You going to help me out . Yeah, absolutely. Ive been working on these vegetables were working into the turkey meat. Im going to add scallions, carrots and celery, thyme. Going to mix this up a little bit. And turn off the heat and let this cool while you work on mixing everything into the 2 pounds of lean ground turkey meat. Okay. Panko . Im going to put panko bread crumbs, add one egg. Okay. Fold it in a little bit. So you dont want to overstir it . Go ahead. Stir it up. I know its a little tough in the beginning. All right. And this is ciracha. Gives it a little bit of heat, a kick. Youre doing a great job, awesome job. And then im going to mix in the vegetables once theyre cool. Go ahead and give that a good mix. Youre doing fantastic. And raight from here, were pretty much going to make 8ounce patties. Makes about four 8ounce patties. Its very equal. I want to get an a. Im going to take this and make a patty. Are the pretty much make a meatball, get the air out of it. Pack it really tight. Pack it really tight. And then you end up with your turkey burgers over here which weve had cooking for a little bit. Do you chill the patty . You do. Let them sit in the refrigerator. We have burgers going for about five minutes on each side. And youll also see some grilled onions. Just a little olive oil, salt and pepper, just to get those a little tender. And what were going to do over here, weve within working on this greek yogurt goat cheese. Put it into the goat cheese and a touch of heavy whipping cream. Okay. You get this creamy, milky. Theres a little bit of a tang in there and it mixs well with the savory burger and grilled onions. Im going to put the turkey burgers and dress these on a 7grain bun, which is really great if you get it from local bakery or the bakery section of your grocery store. And here is your sauce right there. Well each take a bit and put it right on top. Right on the burger or bun . Right on the bun. And then, your grilled onion okay. And you will be done. Oh, weve got a crowd. Theres enough for everyone. You can take a bite of the turkey burger. Ive got a couple back here, too. All right. This is my favorite, salmon burger. A lot of asian elements. And its kind of like an arctic hurricane. So the winds rotating around us. This arctic air is funneled down and in. I dont know if we have the picture of the map, but if you look at it the way it dips down through a little bit of the west, the midwest. Were going to show this in a little bit. And its pretty impressive. I mean, the phrase itself almost sounds like something from a bond movie. Polar vortex. Gold fingers about to release the polar vortex. The country got a look at how cold it was watching that packers game yesterday. Holy cow, in green bay, outdoors, of course. Couldnt have it any other way. They like it. Important to remember the people out there who are out in the cold and sometimes people walk by them. Theres a man missing since last wednesday, and his name is nicholas simmons, 20 years old. He disappeared from his familys house in upstate new york on new years day. This was the picture in the usa today. A photograph documenting how cold things were in washington, d. C. You see him warming himself up on a steam grate there. Well paul and michelle simmons, nicholas parents, saw the photograph and there had been a Facebook Page set up and by seeing his photo, they were able to reunite them, the whole family again. We dont know the specifics of his situation or how he ended up that way. But it is an important reminder, i think, for all of us to take care of people, check on one another. Especially your neighbors, elderly neighbors. Pets, too. But the people out there, any one of them could be somebodys mother, father, sister, daughter. And what a stroke of luck. And, again, a counter clockwise flow of air bringing that arctic air down from the center of the north pole and it comes across and has gone as far south as florida. This is dangerously cold air for today, temperatures feels right now 41 in chicago, 46, minneapolis. But here, new york city and norfolk, mid50s to mid60s. By tomorrow morning, new york, feeling like 8 below, marquette, 38 below, more cold air on wednesday. The good news is, we will see a break as we get into the latter part of the week. This thing moves up to the north. And as it does, it takes with it all the cold air. We get more of a zonal flow from the west. And so warmer temperatures will prevail by friday. Clevelands at 39, new york 41, charleston, 69, omaha, 43, chicago, 36. So just hang in there and be careful. Thats whats going on around the country, heres whats happening in your neck of the wood makes you feel a little guilty, huh . Here with five surprising signs of illnesses that your body may be signaling is internist dr. Carrie peterson. Happy new year. And before we dig into these symptoms, we want to say if you experience any of them, check with your doctor. Absolutely. And first one, heres one that surprises me. A symptom most people wouldnt think is a sign of a heart attack and thats jaw pain. Thats correct. It is a symptom that occurs on the left side of the jaw. Its mild and dull and only lasts a few minutes and caused by the nerves being agitated around the heart when the heart is losing blood supply. It irritates those nerves, but sends a message up to the area of the body. And more common in women, actually, than men, which may be surprising. Women should keep that in mind. Not all jaw pain, though, is related to heart attacks. Just because you have jaw pain, doesnt mean you have to go running to your doctor. If its happening when youre chewing, its very unlikely to be related to your heart. But if its happening when youre exercising, see a doctor right away. Next. This is an interesting one. Yellow bumps on the eyelids. What does that signal . Most likely high cholesterol. It is fat deposits that happen on the inner eyelids and bottoms of the eyes, as well. A simple blood test can diagnose that. Does this matter if youre black, white, asian . Any skin type, but it can happen hereditarily in asiaasia. It doesnt always go away, you may need additional therapies like surgery or laser to get rid of them. To get rid of bumps. Okay. If youre really thirsty coupled with frequent urination, could be a sign of diabetes. I think a lot of people have heard about this. I hope people have heard about this because many think craving sugar is a symptom of diabetes. But instead, frequent urination and thirst is a sign. And the reason it happens is when you have high blood sugar, it leaks into the kidneys and excreted in the urine. The urine gets concentrated and pulls water out of the body causing more water into the urine, so you urinate more frequently and that loss of water in the body causes you to be dehydrated and youre thirsty more often, as well. But if you drink a lot of water and go to the bathroom a lot doesnt necessarily mean diabetes. There are other things that can cause thirst, just dehydration from exercise, for example. But if its more excessive and youre thirsty frequently when you dont expect to be, you should get tested for diabetes. This ones interesting, chewing ice. If youre somebody who cant stop chewing ice. This is iron deficiency and anemia. Ive seen people in the supermarket chomping on ice and i want to say get your iron checked. Its due to iron deficiency, more common in women because women are more likely to get iron deficiency because of lack of iron in the diet. Why ice, though . Its very strange. Lastly, blistering rash on one side of your body could signal shingles. Thats correct. Shingles, a reactivation of the chickenpox causes a blistering rash in a band around the torso or on one side of the face. Doesnt cross the midline. And it can be treated, doesnt cure it, but with antiviral medication, you can shorten the duration and the severity of the illness. All right. One of the san jose state students accused in taking part in hate crimes against his teammate is expected to be arraigned today. So gib jab, they send the great ecards, you can put your faces in them, they come out with a great series of apps for kids called story bots. We have this new series of books and apps including this one called math racer, which i love. Kids can put their own photo in it thats cute. They zoom around the track and they have to answer questions. Kathie lee, 6 plus 7. 13. Yea. Thats cool. We need to play this together. Yeah, you can win power boosts, very motivating for kids. If you get a wrong answer, it doesnt shame you or anything. It is a great way to go. Good. The human body is the next one. I love this, i like anything that encourages stem, science, technology, engineering, math. This lets you do girls or boys. It lets you just free play and see what the human body looks like. And you can, like, go down and go to the digestive system or respiratory system and kids can play with it like they want. Thats wild. It encourages them to want to learn more and thats where you go to the computer and you can hear the lungs breathing . Yeah. It is great. It is great for stem. A suggestion on your part. Good things to learn. Next is shadow puppets. This is brandnew. No one has really seen it. Kids love editing photos. They play with mine all the time. This way all they do is go in and very simple, just pick photos and put it into a little montage and narrate it. This is my daughter it is Christmas Day and okay. You can see there is like a little i dont think we have the volume up. You can see her you know, talking about her tree here. And then we go to the next thing, shes talking about ornaments. And were about to see this is where we put together a video for grandparents, if theyre not around the holidays or School Projects and things like that. Okay. What is the last app . Well, first of all, you know, ive been in the ministry for 60 years, believe it or not. And in those 60 years i noticed that everybody is rushed. Everybody is limiting their time. Everybody also has dreams and plans and hopes that most of the time they never have been able to accomplish and so theyre frustrated. It seems like a lot of people, they find themselves through a little window of time, they waste it. You do candy crush, you watch part of law order episode it was me. But you dont use the time productively. Thats right. How can you change that . Thats what the book is about. It is the half hour waiting for a plane, half hour on the plane, half hour at the Doctors Office. You can do a lot in half an hour. You can throw a lot of balls to your boy in half an hour. You can buy your daughter a dress in half an hour. You can get real close and show a lot of love in half an hour. And you can change someones life as a result. Exactly. Td jakes life was changed several years ago i was speaking at the National Black pastors conference, i was the only i said why in the world would you invite me . Everybody knows these black preachers are the greatest preachers. And they said, well, we invited you because you had a black heart. Which is a compliment. A great compliment. I preached my heart out that night. He was in the audience, he got so excited, he said he thought he was going to have a heart attack. Went back to his Little Church and it began to explode. He got on television and spoke and he stirred the nation. Hes such a dear guy. Such a dear man. He had a conference at his own church, and invited me to speak. I told that story. And said if pastor barnett if i ever had a conference of my own, pastor barnett, i would have him speak that night. He had 8,000 pastors there. Thats amazing. And a little 30minute message changed his life, he said. And practical things in this book that people can take away to do. I think a lot of people think, what can i do in the Doctors Office while im waiting . Yeah, you know, i know a lot of mothers are working and busy having two jobs. Some of them raising families, what can i do . And i thought of susan wesley, she was a great woman, she had 18 children. Her husband passed away. She had to provide for them, she had to work for them. And yet she gave each of her 18 children an hour every single week, 30minute period to an hour. So we do make it is about choices.
