thousands of north korean workers are being pulled from the industrial park shared with south korea. nbc cheese chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in seoul with details. >> reporter: good morning. north korea said it will pull 50,000 workers from the joint economic zone as pyongyang continues to beat the war drum. even the dogs in north korea are trained to defend the father land. state propaganda showed them set loose on effigies of south korea's defense minister. as the leader kim jong-un reviewed his troops marksmanship and showed them how it is done. pinging targets cowboy style. the propaganda may seem ridiculous but north korea is a nuclear state with a leader under 30 playing chicken with the world. >> i think we're in the most dangerous situation in decades. >> reporter: south korea is calm but those who live near the han river separating the two koreas are starting to contemplate what if. this city of 1 million is a few miles from the north korean border and local officials here are telling residents to prepare for the worse, a possible, nuclear, biological or chemical attack and if one comes to find shelter, preferably under ground as quickly as possible. workers at city hall have prepared tens of thousands of pamphlets. it's ominous stuff. how to react if you see a mushroom cloud or if all of the bird and fish suddenly die. a public official but may not know when to stop bluffing either. >> over the weekend we heard a lot from south korean officials. they seem to feel the north is on the verge of another nuclear test or the test firing of another missile. what information, specifically, are they basing that on? what's their degree of certainty? >> south korean officials earlier felt fairly certain that the north would carry out another nuclear test. now they are saying they have only noticed increased activity at a site that north korea has used an underground facility of tunnels to carry out nuclear tests. so they are less confident than they were there will be a fourth nuclear test. they are fairly certain the north will go ahead on the threats to carry out a missile test but not anything armed, perhaps a medium-range missile pointing toward japan japan, perhaps toward guam but most likely landing in the water. if it is in the water, the united states forces are not expected to shoot it down. only u.s. forces are likely to fire at this missile if it is launched. if it seems like it is going to land in allied territory or hit an american interest. >> richard engel in seoul, south korea. thank you very much. afghanistan. anne smedinghoff is the first american diplomate to die in action since last year's assault on the u.s. compound in benghazi, libya. secretary of state john kerry called her a brave american who was compelled to help. police are investigating a fire that broke out on sunday evening and witness reports there was an explosion are being checked out. no one was injured and the fire is now extinguished. officials in new hampshire have found and arrested leeland eisenberg who escaped from prison on sunday afternoon. he had been behind bars for carrying out a siege at hillary clinton's rochester campaign office when she was running for president. he claimed to have a bomb and took hostages. he turned out to be armed only with road flares. now head to wall street. kayla is they are not losing as many bags and getting better at arriving on time. if you want a sample of public opinion about the state of airfare these days you head to the biggest international airport the annual ranking of the airlines the little guys come out ahead. >> the low-cost carriers as a whole tend to outperform the more established, long-term main line carriers. >> reporter: analysts say low-cost carrier s are more nimble and quicker to recover from a stumble. it is all in the numbers. overall airlines improve their on-time performance. in 2012, 82% of flights were on time, compared with 80% in 2011. one reason, carriers are padding their schedules to give themselves more time in case of bad weather or delays. hawaii air, alaska, airtran, delta and u.s. airways had the best on-time numbers jetblue, frontier, united, express jet and american were at the bottom of the list. there were fewer lost bags while slightly more travelers were bumped from flights in 2012. so are we all getting used to packed planes, paying for bags, leg room, meals and carry ones? >> unfortunately, the estate of air travel today is the new normal. i don't think we are going to see the golden age in a moment but first their journey. the four rowers were weeks away from completing a record-setting expedition across the atlantic ocean. two americans and two canadians left senegal january 23rd, their mission to row unassisted across the atlantic ocean a daring 4,000 mile journey to miami. the team was gathering data for studies ranging from marine life to their own sleep deprivation. >> two-hour nap looking ahead to a four-hour row. >> conditions were challenging along the way. >> the waves are far too big and we're just bobbing up and down. >> 2008 olympic gold medalist adam kreck was part of the crew. >> we were seasick and very tired, now we seem to be sliding into a little bit more of a gruelling slog. >> reporter: on saturday their 73rd day at sea and 850 miles from the finish line a giant wave caught them by surprise instantly flipping the boat over. >> we had a plan in place for what to do if this happened and it was successful in that we're getting the guys home that rescued us along with the united states coast guard, first off huge thanks to them for a flawless rescue, both organizations. sector san juan, puerto rico and the c-130 out of clearwater florida. >> the seas are rough, here comes this wave. did you have any warning at all? >> well, yeah, it wasn't one wave. what happened is it was rough that morning. we were rowing into a counter current, we had 18 to 20 knots of wind behind us and rode in seas about twice the size before when the waves were two meters and we were in the middle of a shift change and we were rowing along two sets of waves came up behind us and i turned the stern of the boat towards the waves the safest position for the boat when we're rowing along like that and that first wave hit and overwhelmed the bow, overwhelmed the stern and drove the bow down into the water a little bit and to the side and immediately -- >> did everybody just go flying out of the boat at that point? >> no, not yet. there was a wave right behind that so the stern dipped down again and because we were a little bit on the side, the stern lifted up on the second wave, drove it into that wave that was so close that just hit us and we rolled over and got inverted. >> you had a life raft, excuse me, and also an emergency beacon you activated. how long were you guys in the water or in that raft? >> well, the first thing that happened is adam and pat had to get out of the aft cabin. we were in the middle of the shift change. when that wave went through that's what compromised the boat. once we were in the water it was five minutes we had all four beacons activated and ten minutes the life raft. >> you were lucky the coast guard got hold of that beacon or realized what was happening, there was a cargo vessel in the area and you guys were plucked out of the water. are you going to try this again? >> absolutely. yes. >> i'm not trying this again any time soon. i've got a wife who is 7 months pregnant at home and a 2 1/2-year-old son. the next adventure will be for me driving around in an rv visiting parks. >> you're grounded, no question about it. >> i'm really excited for that. >> we're happy you're safe. be "he was leaning ever closer. my first kiss, i chickened out." you know, the nervousness and self-consciousness, what do you think makes you so good at capturing that? >> i think part of it is because i'm a teenager, so i'm thinking if i had a first date with a guy, i would be so nervous and a complete wreck. what am i going to wear? >> well i'm looking for love in my life so the way, shape and form that it shows up, it's irrelevant. so if it's on a tv show, fantastic. the opportunity to work with the matchmakers was what really drew me into the show. these guys are amazing. >> tell us the roles the matchmakers play. are they helping the girls? are they helping you? >> both. >> both. >> they also help, are going to help the public, like when they're watching, wouldn't you say? >> absolutely. >> there's so many takeaways, they'll tell the girls what they're doing wrong, you talk way too much about your ex-boyfriend, and they'll come to these guys and say get out of your own way, think outside your box, look at this quality. they're amazing. >> when you're looking at someone you're obviously drawn to someone, there's chemistry but you want something that's going to last longer. are you able to find those important values and qualities? >> absolutely. it does take a little bit of time. you can't decide that first week or within the first three weeks who it is but you can as you guys experience yourself together and the match makers really do help and that's the best part, america will be able to apply what they learn to their own lives. >> looks are going to fade. you're really looking for someone like you said could you spend the rest of your life with. >> you're in a rock band a lot of people know you. are you able to weed through the girls looking for more of a fan person? >> well i think that -- that comes in with the matchmakers. we sign onto the show, counting on the matchmakers and with high expectations of them going to find the girls that are a right fit and compatible. >> okay. >> they've been vetted. >> you've got a big survey, you said everything you like and want in a woman. >> it's an awkward process. >> tell us why. why is that weird? >> everything from skin color to like -- butt size. >> we're going to get to that. >> you were married before. >> i was married before. >> why do you think this go-round will be different with these girls? >> again like these guys said, i have to trust the matchmakers that they brought the right girls for us to date. because i was happily married for a long time. and when that failed, that really like turned me upside-down. so this was a unique process to me. >> you're on the road a lot as a musician with the plain white tees. >> that's going to be complicated. >> we can all tell you it works. the matchmakers, it makes a big difference. >> the girls help us out. during the process, we're constantly getting feedback from them as well. >> we should point out, we keep seeing giuliana and bill rancic. they had so much fun on the show, they're the hosts. >> she was like, no. >> she was spending a lot of time with joe rivers, she doesn't take any gulf off of anybody any more. >> unfortunately we can't play our little test we were going to play with you. like bust size, small or large? [ female announcer ] honey nut cheerios cereal -- heart-healthy, whole grain oats. you can't go wrong loving it. bee happy. bee healthy. with clusters of flakes and o's. oh, ho ho... it's the honey sweetness. i...i mean, you...love. good morning. thanks for being with us. i'm marla. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. jon kelley has the day off. >> happening now, strong winds hitting the bay area and hitting us hard. this is a live look in san francisco where we watch this giant flag blowing all day long. lets go to meteorologist christina loren with a look how fast those winds are whipping. >> hey, ladies, yeah. i can tell you right now, the sustained wind speeds are stronger than they were just a few hours ago. they were at their strongest today. we're expecting those numbers to continue, stay on the strong side. battered winds, battered branches. that means we'll likely see more downed trees and limbs throughout the day today. look at readings, west northwest 20 miles per hour sustained speed in san jose, getting stronger gusts. look at impressive gusts so far. hard to believe the bay area talking about 93-mile-an-hour wind gust. that's what we clocked as the highest so far. san francisco hit a 75 miles per hour hurricane wind gust. 62 miles per hour redwood city, saw a wind gust of 52 miles per hour. we're going to continue to keep the wind pumping all day long. not until this evening, overnight will we start to drop off. keep that in mind, travel cautiously out and about the bay area. lots of aftermath and a lot of crews out there. there's so much wind you can't keep up with the reports. we'll continue to update you. a major update on the way. the next weather story, potential 90s in the bay area. talk about when that comes bo play. right now send it back to you, marla and laura. >> as we've been telling you, strong winds are causing all sorts of problems across the bay area. nbc bay area's bob redell shows us some of the aftermath now. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. you're going to see scenes like this up and down the peninsula, in the south bay, we're at san jose not far from actually and 101 you can see overnight this fairly large tree fell on the back side of this 4 by 4 mini suv. right new looks like owner and friends and neighbors are coming out here trying to fix this
