Thats why i signed the iran nuclear deal. Thats why we reopened diplomatic ties with cuba. I keep on thinking, all right, at a certain point, things are gonna kind of ease up. And they havent. And weve gotten a lot of stuff done. You know, i had a cuba trip. I just came back from vietnam, hiroshima. So the work keeps you occupied. Every once in a while, you start thinking about the people youve worked with. And thats where you start getting a little sentimental. But you try to fight it off, because you dont want to be crying in the oval office. [ light laughter ] its a downer and then people would think, my god, you know. [ laughter ] jimmy how can you be our leader . If you see the president crying jimmy every day. It could be a problem. [ laughter ] jimmy could be a problem. So, i try to screen it out. Jimmy when is the last day like, when do they say you got to have your bags packed and you gotta get out of here . I dont know. I should find out. [ laughter ] its actually amazing, because they literally move all your stuff out in one day. You are living there. And then suddenly its not all out on the south lawn. I mean, they pack it up. [ light laughter ] but they will move it to wherever it is that you want to move it to. And so youre living in the white house up until inauguration day. Inauguration day, youre out of there. Jimmy and i read on the internet, i dont know, i believe everything on the internet. [ laughter ] and i read that you guys are moving you guys are moving, like, two miles away from the white house. We will be staying in d. C. Because my younger daughter will still be in school and the idea of her having to transfer schools, move to a new city halfway through high school would not make me popular. Jimmy yeah. Sasha, she was younger when she got there so shes more accustomed to it. But, you know, theyve handled it so well. They are wonderful girls. Theyre smart and funny. But most importantly theyre kind. They dont have an attitude. This is the thing michelle and i were most worried about when we got there. We thought, you know, hows this gonna work . Youve got these butlers and youve got, you know, guys saluting. And its a testimony to michelle and my motherinlaw that they have just turned out to be incredible kids. I could not be prouder. Jimmy i saw a photo of them at this event they were at. Sasha was talking to ryan reynolds, hollywood hunk ryan reynolds. [ light laughter ] hes a good looking guy. Jimmy hes a good looking guy, yeah. Hes better looking than us. Jimmy he is, yeah. But its the best because malias in the background behind ryan and shes going yeah. [ laughter ] i have the photo, because i found it. cause its my favorite. Look at how cute that is. [ laughter ] you have to make tshirts and embarrass sasha on her birthday and make all of her friends wear them. I think its fair to say i embarrass her without tshirts. Yeah, its actually one of my great gifts is embarrassing sasha. Jimmy as a dad, yeah. Absolutely. Jimmy but you must be great and the first lady as well, but also you give advice to kids all the time. You get asked to do commencement speeches. Just gave a couple. Jimmy yeah, which were there was one quote that i really enjoyed, you said democracy requires compromise even when youre 100 right. Yeah. Jimmy did you get that from michelle . Because i think ive been married a few years. [ laughter ] that was a marital tip as well as as well as a tip about democracy. You know, its true. The point i was making i made a couple points. One is despite the news, despite all the rancor, the truth is if you had to be born at any time in human history, and you didnt know who you were going to be ahead of time. You didnt know you were going to be jimmy fallon. You would choose now. Because the world is actually healthier, wealthier, better educated, more tolerant, less violent then it has ever been. I was in hiroshima and thinking about the fact that during a a five, sixyear span, 60 Million People were killed around the world. I mean, it was just devastation. And for all the problems weve got now, what i wanted to communicate to folks was theres a reason to be hopeful. Weve got challenges, but we can deal with them. What we also have to do, though, if were going to deal with them, is we have to recognize democracy means you dont get everything you want when you want it all the time. And, you know, this is something youre teaching your 3yearold, but somehow Congress Sometimes doesnt get it. Sometimes in our politics we expect to get everything. This is a big, complicated, diverse country. Weve got to be able to talk to each other and listen and occasionally compromise and stay principled but recognize that its a long march towards progress. Jimmy speaking of compromise, when you leave the white house, youre going to have to kind of compromise a a little bit. Like, do you remember how to do stuff . [ laughter ] do you take money out of the atm . The atm thing, i remember. Pressing buttons on elevators im worried about. [ laughter ] jimmy its gonna blow your mind. Its really fun. It lights up. Its really fun. You know, look, i was this cool hightech guy when i got there, right. And i was the first president to have a blackberry. [ light laughter ] and so years pass. And no one else has blackberries. [ laughter ] and, you know, ive still got the clip from on the belt. Jimmy oh, my goodness. Right, and then, finally, this year, they said, good news, mr. President , were going to give you a smart phone instead of a blackberry. I thought, all right, this is cool. Ive been seeing malia and sasha doin all this. Michelles got three of them. Shes texting and all this. So im excited. I get the thing and theyre like, well, mr. President , for security reasons, its a great phone, state the art, but it doesnt take pictures, you cant text, the phone doesnt work, you know, you cant play your music on it. [ light laughter ] jimmy we really do, yes. I think so, yeah. Now, this past week, hillary is now the presumptive nominee for the democrats. And you talked to hillary. I did. Jimmy did you talk to her during as shes running . Do they ask you for advice . Yeah, ive actually have spoken to hillary and bernie at certain points during the campaign. I dont know if they asked me for advice, but i give it anyway. [ laughter ] jimmy they wouldnt you know what, it was a a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to have a a contested primary. I thought that Bernie Sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas. He pushed the party and challenged them. I thought it made hillary a a better candidate. I think she is whip smart, she is tough, and she deeply cares about working people and putting kids through school and making sure were growing our economy. So my hope is that over the next couple of weeks, were able to pull things together and what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchy. Everybody does. When hillary and i ran in 2 2008, you know, your staff and supporters, theyre popping off. Somebodys reading did you see what and they start spinning stuff up. Jimmy sure. So theres a natural process of everybody recognizing that this is not about any individual, but this is about the country and the direction were going to take it. I think were going to have a a Great Convention and well do well. Jimmy is bernie going to endorse hillary . Well, im sure theyre going to have a conversation. Jimmy is he ever going to drop out . [ light laughter ] or hes going to stay in . Im going to be talking to him tomorrow. Hes going to be coming to the white house. The main role im going to be playing in this process is to remind the American People that this is a serious job. This is not reality tv. Ive seen the decisions that have to be made. And the work that has to be done. And i have a lot of confidence that if the American People are reminded of whats at stake and all the incredibly important issues that we got to get right, that theyre going to make a good choice. Thats what they usually do. Jimmy speaking of reality tv, i dont know if you saw celebrity apprentice. I did. Jimmy its a great show, yeah. [ light laughter ] has donald trump called you for advice or talked to you at all . First of all, youve given some pretty good advice so far if you have. Has he called and talked to you . I would call you if i was running. No, no, he hasnt. No. Jimmy no. [ light laughter ] not that i know of. Jimmy you think the republicans are happy with their choice . We are, but i dont know how i dont know how theyre feeling. [ cheers and applause ] actually, you know what [ laughter ] that was too easy. But, but the truth is actually, i am worried about the Republican Party. I know that sounds, you know you know what it sounds like. Jimmy yeah, yeah, yeah. But democracy works, this country works when you have two parties that are serious and trying to solve problems and theyve got philosophical differences and they have fierce debates and they argue and they contest elections. But at the end of the day, what you want is a healthy twoparty system. You want the republican nominee to be somebody who could do the job if they win. And you want folks who understand the issues. And where you can sit across the table from them and you have a principled argument and ultimately can still move the country forward. I actually am not enjoying, and i havent been enjoying over the last seven years, watching some of the things that happened in the Republican Party. Because theres some good people in the Republican Party. There are wonderful republicans out in the country who want whats best for the country and may disagree with me on some things, but are good, decent people. But whats happened in that party, culminating in this current nomination, i think is not actually good for the country as a whole. Its not something democrats should wish for. And my hope is that maybe once you get through the cycle, theres some corrective action and they get back to being a a centerright party and Democratic Party being a a centerleft party and we start figuring out how to work together. Jimmy was it harder for you going in as president and realizing, well, people are going to go, like, not work with me . The republicans are not going to work with me. It exceeded my expectations, because when i came in, we were in the middle crisis. And usually your hope is, all right, we can play political games, but when stuff is serious, when were losing 800,000 jobs a month, when weve got 180,000 troops in afghanistan and iraq that were going to buckle down here for a a second, put the politics aside and just get stuff done, and that did not happen. Jimmy like whats the Supreme Court thing . Whats happening with that . Because i know theres a seat that need to be filled. So this is a good case in point. The Supreme Court makes the laws, interprets the law of the land and its binding all across the country. And right now, were supposed to have nine Supreme Court justices because you know, the passing of justice scalia, we only have eight. And so its hard for the Supreme Court to do its job. Now, ive nominated somebody who uniformly everybody, including republicans, acknowledges is probably one of the most qualified guys whos ever been nominated for the seat, merrick garland. Jimmy merrick garland. Merrick garland. Jimmy very common name. Hes the chief judge of probably the second most Important Court in the land. Hes been a judge longer than many of the judges who are now justices on the Supreme Court. Republicans in the past have said he has impeccable credentials. Hes smart, he has a good temperament, he knows how to work with people from all political spectrums. Some of them wont even meet with them. So far, at least, they havent given him a hearing. And thats an example of where if the process of democracy starts breaking down to that degree where you cant even show the courtesy of meeting with a guy who you know is qualified and you wont give him a hearing, because you want to wait and see if maybe your guy wins the election and nominates somebody. Then you start seeing the court system breaking down. You start seeing vacancies. People cant get access to the courts. And you see the country start dividing in ways thats really unhealthy. So thats a good example of my hope that the Republican Party steps back and reflects and says, you know what, thats not the way we should be doing business. Because we dont want democrats to be doing business if we have a republican president. Jimmy like, would you ever think to do that job . Because youre a lawyer. Can you appoint yourself . We so appreciated it. Jimmy thank you. I loved it as well. I was opening up for the foo fighters. It was fourth of july in the white house. I get there. I was so nervous to meet you. I was googling how to say hello to the first lady. Like, do i say hello first lady, mrs. Obama, mrs. Obama, first lady. I didnt know how to say it. I think you actually said all of them. Jimmy i think i did too. I wore a threepiece suit that day because i was very i just wanted to impress you. [ light laughter ] but it was an outdoor event on the fourth of july and i remember i got there and dave grohl was there in board shirts and a tshirt. He goes, you look hot. I go, i really am, its really boiling. This is crazy. I go, arent you meeting the president . Basically saying, were the foo fighters. I go, yeah. And then we wait in line, because were going to get our picture taken with you guys. I was so nervous to meet you. I went up and i was practicing, like, hello, first lady, mrs. First lady. And i walk over and the first lady starts laughing and looking at me. She goes, oh, honey, oh, my gosh, so sweaty. [ laughter ] true story. Loosened my tie. And i looked at you and you had a shortsleeved shirt and khakis on. I go, hello, mr. President , sir. And you go, didnt you get the memo . Its a barbecue. [ laughter and applause ] they took the picture and they escorted me out. And then i hadnt seen you since. [ laughter ] i was just wondering, do people get do you have any stories like that, where people are just so embarrassing like that and you try and make them feel better . Nothing that embarrassing. [ laughter ] jimmy im sure i think that was actually the peak of awkwardness. Jimmy yeah, perfect, thank you. Can i just ask you just straight up, what is the first thing youre going to do when you leave office, do you know . Im going to get some sleep, thats for sure. Jimmy yeah. You know, its actually a a moving thing. Youre talking about sentimentality. But i remember from my inauguration, seeing president bush, you get on marine one and thats the last time you get on marine one. They fly you to Andrews Air Force base. Then you get on air force one and its your last flight. Then theyll take you anywhere you want. I think its fair to say it will be some place warm. Because its going to be january and every inauguration has been freezing. Jimmy yeah. And then, you know, i think michelle and i will take a a break somewhere for a couple weeks.
