Good evening, facing a boycott by its own players the nba tonight has handed out a lifetime ban to one of its own team owners, Donald Sterling of the l. A. Clippers because of the damaging and racist comments he now admits came from him. The nba commissioner today condemned sterling in announcing the lifetime ban and a fine of 2. 5 million and says the league plans to force a sale of the team. And from here in los angeles, where the clippers are in the playoffs and around this country these comments about race has exploded into the national conversation. We begin tonight with Nbcs Joe Fryer across town at the Staple Center where the team will be playing this evening. Joe, good evening. Reporter still no comment from Donald Sterling since this announcement was made so its unclear if he plans to fight to keep his team. Tonight the clippers have a big playoff game with fans and players already declaring a different kind of victory. Nba commissioner adam silver on the job for only three months did not mince words. Effective immediately im banning mr. Sterling for life from any association with the Clippers Organization or the nba. Reporter no games, no practices, no ability to make any decisions about the team, plus a 2. 5 million fine, the maximum allowed after the nbas investigation. Mr. Sterling acknowledged it was his voice on the tape. And he has not expressed to me directly any other views. We stand together in condemning mr. Sterlings views. They simply have no place in the nba. We all started clapping because he handled it the right way and im so happy that he did that. There will be zero tolerance for institutional racism, no matter how rich or powerful. Yeah it bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that youre associating with black people. Do you have to . Reporter commissioner silver is urging nba owners to force a sale, saying sterling could be removed as owner with a three quarters vote. Its an agreement he made that if he acts in this type of a way his fellow owners could remove him from this club. Reporter sterling now 80 years old bought the clippers for 12 million in 1981. Forbes estimates the teams value at 575 million and many analysts feel it could sell for more. The team is in the playoffs and moments after todays announcement their website featured only a logo and three simple words, we are one. Tonight when they play their owners court side seat will remain empty. Several companies had cut ties with the clippers earlier this week. Tonight at least one of those Companies Samsung plans to renew advertising with the clippers. Still a lot of Unanswered Questions about the future of this team, especially if this ends up in court and we know at least some are still planning a protest before tonights game. Brian . Death toll across the region now stands at at least 34. Before and after photos of one neighborhood in vilonia, arkansas just begin to show what this weather is capable of. This is the same stormfront thats proving to be relentless, churning up Severe Weather, firing up violent embedded thunderstorms and spawning tornadoes as it goes. National Weather Service has confirmed these tornadoes have produced winds of 200 miles per hour. Again tonight our teams are out across the region. We begin our reporting with Nbcs Lester Holt in tupelo, mississippi. Lester, good evening. Reporter good evening, brian. You look around here, you walk the brick and glass littered streets of tupelo and amazed no one here died from the tornado. Take a look across the street. You can look at the buildings on either side for about a half mile or so, either destroyed or badly damaged that includes homes. With the threat of more bad weather across the south tonight you can understand why people are in shock and on edge. Its moving to the right. Reporter on monday there were 67 reports of tornadoes touching down in five states. 46 reports in mississippi alone. Where survivors recounted the terrifying minutes. Pressure dropped. Ears hurt. All of that stuff. Hear the train coming like everybody says you hear the train coming. Reporter the twister that ripped through tupelo destroyed an entire Business District and sent trees crashing in to nearby homes. Amy justice and her neighbors scurried into a backyard shelter just in time. Everything started to shake and you could hear the disaster going on around outside. Reporter this afternoon in some ravaged towns workers raced to secure and protect damaged roofs fearing another round of storms is on its way. While in battered neighborhoods across the south survivors pondered how quickly and violently life as they know it has changed. On sunday morning when we were worshipping here we never thought this would be our last sunday to be sitting in this pew right here. Reporter this 21yearold was far from the danger in his home town of tupelo, mississippi but could not escape a tornado in alabama. The university of alabama student and Swim Team Member died as he tried to take shelter in the basement of a home. Since sunday at least 34 people have died as a result of the violent storms. Including 9yearold cameron and 7yearold tyler smith. Their parents moved to vilonia, arkansas this past fall so their sons could attend school there. Both daniel and april were seriously injured when a tornado leveled their home leaving virtually nothing behind. Today april learned both of her sons were killed when the four of them tried to take cover inside. They lit up the room wherever and however they were. You knew they were there. And they are just great kids. Reporter also among the dead, 31yearold daniel wassum the Arkansas National guard airman, an iraq veteran died in his home as he shielded his two young daughters from falling debris. His wife and the girls survived. A great dad he was. He really loved those girls. Loved his wife. What a great son he was, you know. Couldnt ask for a better son. Reporter today his father searched the wreckage for any keepsakes he could find. He was a good boy, guys. I wish you knew him. Reporter back here in tupelo, some apprehension, about an hour ago the sky got dark, skies opened up but fortunately it remains quiet at least here. There has been damage to homes there from this tornado touching down and causing damage to homes. So as we press on overnight tonight, there is still a tornado risk across north and South Carolina as well as the deep south as we go through the next couple days, it starts to wain a bit. There will be tornados, but we dont positithink as many. Raleigh, washington, d. C. Now in the mix. And still even on thursday, we pick up where we left off last friday with tornadoes in the state of north carolina. Tonight Authorities Say a gunman who opened fire early this morning at a fedex facility outside of atlanta was also carrying explosive devices but never detonated during the attack. He wounded six people, several of whom hospitalized in Critical Condition then turned the gun on himself. The gunman was a package handler and sorter but yet to identify a motive. Witnesses said he was dressed in allblack in a camo vest. One woman said he had bullets strapped across his chest like rambo. Overseas a dramatic moment as pro russian militants stormed a government building in eastern ukraine. Armed with baseball bats they smashed windows as crowds cheered them on. Insurgents have seized government buildings, police stations and city halls in ten cities and towns across that eastern part of ukraine. And this was bound to happen in light of the new economic sanctions on russia, Russias Deputy Prime Minister suggested the u. S. Reporter whats on your cell phone . More than 90 of americans have them. Nearly twothirds smartphones. Things that i dont even want to say on camera its that sensitive. Reporter with 13 Million People arrested every year most for minor offenses, defense lawyers say police should get a search warrant to rummage through the cell phones of anyone they arrest because smartphones contain so much private information, medical records, political and religious affiliations, even intimate pictures. Whats at issue is whether police in every arrest no matter how minor the offense can do a full exploratory search. Reporter the Obama Administration joins Police Officers who say criminals use cell phones as a tool. Theres one involved with every crime either as a facilitator or an eyewitness. Its extremely valuable. Reporter courts have long held that police do not need a warrant to search anything they find on people they arrest including purses or wallets. The question should phones be treated the same. Justice alito asked, whats the difference between looking at photos in a bill fold and saved in the memory of a cell phone. One in five women have been sexually assaulted at college but only 12 of student victims report the assault. Last fall we reported on a young boy in afghanistan who paid a terrible price just for living in a country at war. Turns out someone watching from home decided to make a difference. The story tonight from our chief Foreign Correspondent richard engel. Reporter there are moments even in war when humanity and kindness shine through and offer hope. This is obaid, a 12yearold boy. We first met him last fall in kabul at an italianrun hospital. He was in a lot of pain as doctors changed his bandages. His legs were blown off when a mortar hit his house. The taliban and u. S. Troops were fighting nearby. Obaid was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Another civilian casualty in afghanistan. But he refused to give up. Three months after being injured obaid went to the red cross where they measured him for prosthetic legs. These were his first shaky steps with a long recovery ahead. But obaid would find help from 7,000 miles away. Outside boston when Cindy Barrett saw a nightly news report from last november. I think in part i connected with this little boy because i have young grandsons, and my grandchildren are healthy and strong and athletic. The contrast was just too much for me to ignore to see this child. I really made a connection to him. Reporter cindy isnt rich but decided to donate a few thousand dollars. It changed his life. Paid for books, a School Uniform and tuition. His father helped him dress for the first day of school. He hasnt missed a day since. He cant climb the stairs as quickly as other students but one step at a time all by himself. He makes it to his classroom. How are you, obaid, good to see you. Reporter when i visited in march obaid was optimistic and strong with big plans for the future. What do you want to do when you grow up . Reporter he says he wants to be a heart surgeon. Now learning english he wrote cindy a letter. He had something to tell her. Thank you, cindy. We delivered the letter from the boy she never met to cindy in person. Not in my wildest dreams i would ever imagine it would come to this. Its wonderful. Reporter the letter thanks the American People and that cindy that helped me. I know that there are countless children who have injuries like obaid, and its impossible to help all of them. But its not impossible to help one of them. We start in the south bay. A Homicide Investigation just blocks away from Regional Medical center. Police are trying to solve san joses 13th killing of the year. Officers were called to a home right off 680. You can see the map here. Kris sanchez joins us from the scene. What do we know . Reporter we know that being that close to Regional Medical center did not make a bit of difference for the woman who was found stabbed in her home here. 911 was called by a neighbor just a few minutes before 3 00. By the time police and medical personnel arrived, it was too late for that woman. Investigators remain here at the scene looking for any clues. They say they dont have a suspect description at this point, nor do they have witnesses that theyre willing to reveal to us at this point. We asked if this was an incident of Domestic Violence because the woman was stabbed in a home. They say theyre just not ready to tell. There are a lot of people [ inaudible ] reporter this is the 13th homicide that is being investigated here in the city of san jose. Its just a few numbers higher than we were at this point last year, but investigators again remain at the scene. The coroner has not yet
