Sadly, many times that good is born out of tragedy. We begin with a man in a wheelchair whose therapy dog was stolen and then returned. We covered the crime and reunion when it happened last month. But we have a suspicion that behind this goodnews story was an even better one. We were right. I want to let you guys know to never give up, keep pushing, stay positive. If karma ever wanted to make a commercial, arthur might make a good pitchman. Its tough but it gets better with time. For what better way to explain what happened to arthur last month than a good turn after so many good deeds. Life is short. I know that after what ive been through. I want to leave a mark on this life. Arthurs story, you might have guessed, didnt start in a good way. This chapter beginning seven years ago with a mugger and a gun in a dark San Francisco parking lot. It happened so quickly. He shot me. The bullet went through my chest, went through both of my lungs, shattered my spine. Arthur awoke a month later to a future in a wheelchair, one that looked bleak for this lifelong athlete. I didnt know how to take it. I didnt know who a spinal cord injury was or being paralyzed was. I never had a friend that was in a chair. Arthur says he went into a dark place only to be pulled out, not just by family and friends but the companionship of a toy poodle named love. Without love, i wouldnt be where im at. With loves help, arthur decided to turn a negative into a positive. Not just making the most of his life but visiting hospitals and Rehab Centers letting newly paralyzed patients now, it can get better. Whats your name . Priscilla . Through his project, arthur will speak to any group open to hearing the story of overcoming obstacles. And for all of it, love is there. Arthur is heartbroken and worried. Which is why last month when love disappeared, it was headline news. Arthur had been preparing to work out at the San Leandro Marina when love was stolen. A fullcourt media blitz, both social and traditional, followed until a couple who had purchased love in the parking lot of a walmart realized who they had and gave her back. It felt great to be able to have that support. And it felt even better to get her back. This is love right here. And just how does a dogooder return such a good deed . In arthurs case, by keeping up the good work. I know that i was able to help somebody push on and live life to the fullest. Thats my main goal every day, to live life to the fullest. Now to a story that made national headlines. A Silicon Valley ceo and his family disappear without a trace when their plane crashes over idaho last december. But theres one part of the story that wasnt exposed until now. The role a 17yearold girl 500 miles away played in the search for the wreckage. You guys remember where the Nature Museum is, right . Leadership. Not very far from her. Is a quality that serves a Camp Counselor well. For Susannah Goldberg right now that means getting a group of fidgety kids to build a birdhouse. Its a summer job she was sure she could handle. Not at all like the leadership role she found herself in this past winter. A lot of prayers, a lot of anxieties about being able to step up to this role i had taken on somehow. The story starts in, of all places, somewhere susannah had never been before the wilderness of idaho. It was there that a singleengine plane with five members of the smith family of san jose on board crashed on december 1st, 2013. Dale smith, the experienced pilot, was also a personal friend. Susannahs scripture teacher at church. It was on a sunday. And i dont remember who i heard it from. But they said that brother smiths sorry. No one knew at the time, but it would take weeks for the planes wreckage to be found. She said she would have trudged through the winter snow to search herself. But what could a 17yearold 500 miles away do . A lot, it turns out. Susannah learned of a service that provides satellite images for searches just like the one in idaho. She began a Facebook Page to help organize an Online Search of thousands upon thousands of satellite and aerial images. At the time it was very gratifying to be able to do something to help. She had no idea what she was starting. The group grew to more than 2,000 members and susannah worked around the clock managing it all. And in the process raising her own spirits and learning just how powerful a community can be behind the right leader. I know a lot of people came away with their faith strengthened and have a better perspective of life and on people. From reallife drama to the fictional kind that happens on the big screen. While hollywood gets much of the attention, there are plenty of successful filmmakers who call the bay area home, like esther pearl. And right now, shes looking to create a few more just like her. Good morning. How are you guys doing . How many people feel like really stressed about getting their edits finished this morning . The budgets may be minuscule and the deadlines a bit unreal those will be shown on saturday, your final film. But esther pearl designed camp real story, her weeklong filmmaking summer camp to expose young people to what movie making is like in the real world, with one big exception. This world is a 100 female endeavor. Theres a big problem. When you only have 16 of the Decision Makers in the media that are women, youre not going to have a media that reflects our society. Esther knows these numbers not just from reports she has read but the life shes lived. Esther has spent a career in the film business. For seven years, she worked at emeryvilles pixar studios. Her names are high up in the credits as art and Story Department manager for the incredibles and monsters, inc. Esthers went on to get her masters and studied issues facing women in the media but shes not the type to write another paper or do another study. Im sort of a little bit shoot first ask questions later person. Esther wanted to do something to help fix what she sees is a problem. Thats why last year she started camp real story. Three dozen young women working in teams to create short films. They shoot, edit and learn to collaborate, all under the eyes of volunteers, female, of course, from the world of film. And they do it all in just five days. We were really, really surprised at the quality of work considering that none of the girls had any film and video experience. Norma, a High School Senior from oakland, had never considered film a possible career for her. She does now. At first, i didnt really think of how people are portrayed in media. Oh, its a film. But then with the camp, theyre like, we dont really look like that. Women dont really act like how we are in the media. Were really different. Its feedback like that thats convinced esther to bring the camp back for a second year, even add a second week and hopefully inspire the next generation. Still ahead, another woman who saw a need and came up with a solution. What shes doing to make sure the kids who need it most get started with the most basic of School Supplies. Plus, shes not just an athlete Winning National swimming competitions. A mill valley woman with down syndrome inspires others in and out of the water. The more we can do about bringing awareness about this horrible disease but first, walking with a purpose. A son honors his mothers legacy the best way he knows how. Now to a story that has changed quite a bit since we first aired it, proving no matter how you train and plan for an epic adventure, sometimes things just dont go how youd expect. But for one gilroy family, their heart is still in the right place. This family, he and his three sons, set off on a monstrous alaskan biking and kayaking adventure. More than 5,000 miles to raise money for the foundation that helps to train blind people in the sport of judo. But illness and bad weather altered and shortened their plans, at least this time. You can be sure they have their sights set, though, on more adventures. Definitely ive been growing up and watching my dad do sometimes crazy things. And i definitely think some of it rubbed off on me. You can read more about the highs and lows of their trip on their website. Now to another physical challenge but of a very personal nature. John orofino lost his mom, karen, to Ovarian Cancer earlier this year at the age of 64. It was a loss felt right here at nbc bay area as well as karen was a former Sales Manager at the station. Woody understood his loss wasnt unique. The same thing happens to thousands of people every year. But what if they all found a way, even a simple one, like woody has, to put their grief to good use . There is something about the rugged beauty of a place like the Marin Headlands that makes it the perfect spot to be alone with your thoughts. John woody orofino has been coming here a lot lately to do just that. Alone but not by himself. You absolutely do feel some sort of presence when youre around these areas. The presence is that of his mother, karen. Karen orofino loved to hike the headland trails and woody loved to go with her. She was just really a great person that instilled these values of having a good time and enjoying the moment. It was, though, exactly one day after enjoying one of lifes best moments, woodys sisters wedding in october of 2012, that his father gathered the family for some bad news. Karen had been diagnosed with stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. The wedding was beautiful. Couldnt have been more perfect. Mom and dad were dancing around. The entire family was dancing. It couldnt have been a better wedding. And then right when they when it came out of my dads mouth, i broke down, frankly. Woody says he knew at that very moment this is how his mother would die. And this past may, she did. The very next day, woody was back in the headlands. This time, though, with a plan, to put his grief to good use. Hes now in training, you see. Woody is heading to the sierra at the end of this month to tackle the john muir trail, all 210 rugged miles of it. By himself but, again, not alone. To see so many people support the page or support the cause from all over the world that i have no affiliation with is really cool to see. More than 100 people have responded to woodys request for donations to help search for a cure for Ovarian Cancer and spread the word about this little understood disease. The more we can do about bringing awareness about this horrible disease, the more likelihood that well decrease the amount of those mothers, daughters, role models and wives from dying every year. Its a message woody plans on sharing with the world as he shares yet one more walk with his mother. My moms going to be there every step of the way. Still ahead, shes a onewoman powerhouse. Her mission . To give kids who would otherwise go without one of the most Important School supplies a student can have. I love the win. And when she does, over and over again as a competitive swimmer in the Special Olympics, but thats not what makes her a true winner. That story coming up. One mill valley woman as the heart of a champion and the hardware to prove it. But cleaning up at a National Competition is just the beginning of the good news. Kim chandler is 38 years old and has down syndrome. Her selfconfidence was certainly on display this year at the Special Olympics usa games. But what does a real winner do when the games are done . Keep winning, of course. Water, we are told, seeks its own level, always evening out on top. Water, it turns out, has been a great equalizer in kim chandlers life as well. The students you see in this Mill Valley Community center swim class where kim volunteers dont know or care about the highs and lows of her life. They only care that when they hit the water, shes there to catch them. I still like it. I like the whole thing. Kim was born 38 years ago in thailand where her family was living. The prognosis for a girl with down syndrome at that time and in that place was not one full of promise. The doctors said, maybe shell be able to fit in society. But mom, nancy, says a mainstream education and two loving older sisters gave kim a great foundation. She says kims natural ability are what made her a great athlete. She learned to swim in thailand with a teacher young. And thats where her nice strokes and all came from. Strokes kim showed off to the country at this years Special Olympics usa games in new jersey in june. That is kim in the 100 meter freestyle relay where her team won a gold medal. This one is silver. Just one of three medals kim won during the game. I love to win. I was very proud. Yeah. But what makes mom even prouder is how kim chooses to live her life every day. This summer teaching, not just swimming, but art to children at the community center. And teaching the rest of us that real winners dont stop even after crossing the finish line. Coming up, building up a students confidence through backpacks, lots of them. Meet the woman behind this grassroots effort to get these bags on the backs of children. The calendar may say its skill summer. But back to school has already taken over the stores. But its not just big businesses that are planning ahead. Its the time of year one Santa Cruz County woman kickstarts her evergrowing charity. You guys have any gently used backpacks at home . Lynda has the dreams of running a nonprofit with a sophisticated website and deeppocketed corporate sponsors. One with Warehouse Space and a marketing budget. Lynda hopes for all of that one day. Today, though, she just wants a few more old backpacks. Well, more than just a few. I have to figure out how to get 275 more backpacks. Lynda has set a goal for herself this year of 500 used backpacks filled with School Supplies to give to homeless and low income Santa Cruz County kids. Its a far cry from her first donation of just two backpacks 11 years ago. They belonged to her boys joe and tim who were pleading for new backpacks, even though theirs were barely worn. And im like, guys, your backpacks are fine. Mom doesnt have a lot of money. Theyre like, cant we donate them . The boys won that battle and lynda donated their old packs filled with new supplies to the local homeless shelter. I went to see the lady i saw there and said, could you use some backpacks . And she was thrilled, absolutely thrilled. The lady was thrilled and lynda was hooked. Her goals have increased every year since, as have the number of places she donates to and the hours it takes to do it all. The amount of time it takes me is way less than the impact it has on them. Thats whats most important. Lynda knows the impact because the kids and their family write letters telling her about it. Your time, efforts and generosity will not be forgotten, an appreciative recipient. This makes it all worth it. I dont care how much time it takes me.
