Inmate at santa clara main county jail. Three correctional personnel are suspended and charged with murder in the case. Another inmate, walter roaches, who died this week. The investigation into that continues. The coroner just confirming this week that the death was cause cause was inconclusive. Its been a tumultuous week at the sheriffs office. We now have two more in personnel arrested. Reporting live at the sheriffs department, Chuck Coppola, nbc bay area news. You said it. Tumultuous and turbulent few weeks in santa clara county. This news after eight deputies were put on leave. Three deputies face murder charges in the alleged beating, the death of an inmate. That happened in august. The sheriff has not said why the other five deputies were placed on leave. Sources have told us some of them are being investigated for potentially inappropriate text messages. Remembered for the way they lived. New details now on the nine men and women killed during yesterdays mass shooting at that Community College in oregon. Some of those killed had just started college for the first time. Others like 33yearold Jason Johnson were heading back to school, hoping to turn their lives around. Its as much pain and sorrow as elation when you have a baby in the first place. Youre really happy and joyous, then theyre gone. The pain and sorrow. Thats johnsons mother there speaking. Also, among the injured, army vet and student chris mince, shot five times as he charged at the shooter. Tonight, were also learning more about that gunman and why he may have targeted some of the victims. Chris Harper Mercer was a classmate of some that he shot at the college. Police walked out with bags of evidence from his house. We have more from San Francisco on how the shooting is renewing the conversation about gun control again. First we start with Damian Trujillo live in oregon. Damian, how are they coping on campus . It must be so somber. Reporter theyre trying to remain a united front here in rose frozen, if you will. Roseburg, if you will. People are dropping off flowers, and the classes canceled all of next week. Given all the Evidence Police have gathered, it appears the gunman was prepared to kill even more people. Multiple gunshots Reporter Police responded to umpqua with firepower and found the shooter planned more death and destruction. Weve recovered 13 weapons. Out of those 13 weapons, we have in custody six that were recovered at the school, seven recovered at the shooters residence. Reporter all traced to federal firearms dealers. Investigators say the guns were also purchased legally either by the shooter or by a family member. The atf says police also recovered five magazines from the suspects jacket. A jacket that had also been modified with steel plates, likely to protect him from bullets. Today students were able to return to the campus for the first time, but only to retrieve the cars they left behind in the frantic minutes during and after the shootings. Were also hearing more troubling details about the gunmans victims. They were christians, they were shot in the head. But if they stated other or didnt answer, they were shot in the leg. Reporter today, state troopers also returned to the shooters home which is just a mile from the campus. Neighbors watched as officers removed bags full of evidence. Many neighbors still trying to make sense of it all. I live with my fiancee and 1 1 2yearold son. Knowing this guy was 20 feet away from them when i was at work 12 hours a day, it takes time to process. Reporter neighbors describe the gunman as quiet and kind of removed, never interacting with anyone. But they never imagined the man next door was capable of causing this community so much pain. The 26yearold gunman was an Army Boot Camp dropout who appears to have studied mass shooters before becoming one himself. There are several members of the Foreign Press here, reporters from asia and europe, all asking the sheriff here how this could happen in america. This time around, president obama is changing his tune, and so are many other americans including a local gun shop owner. Nbc bay area has more from San Francisco this evening. Kim, this gun shop is closing its doors. Whats the back story here . Reporter theyre closing the doors at the end of the month. They say just because San Francisco has such tough gun control laws. Now city leaders say they arent waiting for the federal government to take action. They are putting gun control at the forefront saying its in the best interests of their residents. San francisco already has some of the nations toughest gun laws. Now new proposed legislation has the only gun store in town preparing to close up shop for good. The discussion there today how federal and local leaders want to make it even tougher to buy a gun. How do you regulate someones behavior . How do you make that determination . What tools do we have to explore that . I think we should look at that. Reporter supervisor mark farrell agrees that there isnt just one solution, but firmly believes that limiting access is the first and most important step in keeping the public safe. Absolutely someone who even thinks about taking a firearm to kill other individuals or mass shootings, there are serious issue involved. However, its also the access to the guns that contribute to this violence actually happening. On the federal level, president obama again expressed his frustration today saying for now all he can do is keep the issue on the top of everybodys minds. Today, dozens of east bay teachers got a lesson on how to keep their students safe if a shooter walks on campus. The timing is purely coincidental. That drill had already been planned for months. And the main point they learned have a plan and be ready. Think about doors, think about windows, think about how they would barricade those doors and windows. Think about how they can open them if they need to escape. 90 teachers took part in the training at Mission Valley middle school in union city. Now it was paid for by the department of homeland security. And in addition to that safety training, the teachers were also taught how to spot odd student behavior. The Lake County Sheriffs Office says that 13 homeowners evacuated during the valley fire have reported burglaries. We knew this was a concern when we were there in the days after the fire. Eight of the breakins happened in the community of Hidden Valley lake. We should say four breakins were in the middletown area, you see there. Two others in Whispering Pines and lock lohman. Six people are charged with looting or planning to loot. In one case, the suspected burglar drove away in a car parked in the garage of one of the evacuated homes. Not just people, a lot of animals are still struggling. Hundreds of injured or displaced animals have been rescued. Many of the cats are at the u. C. Davis veterinary teaching hospital. Vets are working long hours cleaning up and wrapping wounds of the cats. Most from the flames. Many of the animals are barn cats, simply left behind in a rush to get out of town. A lot of cat lost their paw pads actually. So they wont ever regain their paw pads back. Some of the cats have been claimed by their owners. Reporter folks in west oakland woke up to the sound of flashbang grenades. Oakland police and the fbi raided a west oakland home this morning looking for members of a dangerous and violent gang. We went after several violent ghost town gang members who did not sdop shooting after being warned from our ceasefire program. Police say this sketch is of the man who assaulted the child in the restroom of the San Francisco library last weekend. Hes described as short and husky. When the boy told his mother, she yelled for help. This man ran off. The special victims unit wants the publics help in identifying him. Our chopper shows us fire crews removing the car from the primary eye care optometrist on Castro Valley boulevard. The crash happened after 7 00 when the driver hit a signal pole. Chp said the car flipped on the roof and into the building. The woman was not seriously hurt. Police are trying to figure out how she ended up initially hitting that pole to begin with. It included high school graduates, older students, too, and even a 67yearold instructor. Not just people who died, but people who were injured, as well. We learned that nine people were injured in the shooting. Authorities say the shooter, christopher mercer, wore a protective flack jacket and brought at least six guns and five magazines, in terms of ammunition magazines, to the school. He was a classmate to some of the very people he shot. You will not hear anyone from this Law Enforcement operation use his name. I continue to believe that media and Community Members who publicize his name will only glorify his horrific action. That is a concern for many people. Investigators found a lengthy note spout being his philosophy of hate and empty life with no friends or girlfriend. Damian trujillo joins us live from roseburg, oregon. For this to happen in such a tiny town where Everybody Knows a victim one way or the other. Reporter yeah. The locals are impressed but not surprised by the level of care and support theyre receiving here in roseburg. Signs like this are popping up all over town since yesterday. One resident told me the locals might disagree on politics, religion, or other issues, but it has always been a closeknit community. Today almost every corner of the town has support and thank you signs for the First Responders and doctors and nurses who continue to help the injured. Some students were allowed back on campus for the first time to pick up the vehicles they left as they ran for their lives. Its heartbreaking. I wasnt able to grab anything besides myself and ran. The suspect is in custody. 61yearold james goss, seen here from calaveres county. Police believe he stabbed and killed 32yearold Robert Lawless of san jose yesterday. It happened at the lia hotel in san carlos. Goss also suffered minor stab wounds. Police say the men knew each other, but its not clear why goss allegedly killed the victim. A former basketball coach is facing another 16 counts of child sex abuse after a second victim comes forward. Prosecutors plan to file additional charges against 34yearold julio ortiz of menlo park. San mateo chp first arrested him last month after deputies spotted ortiz carrying out lewd acts with a 14yearold boy in  car. Prosecutors say the alleged victim is a former player who claimed he was abused for some 15 months. Really he was in a position of trust to have access to dozens and dozens of these minors, these young athletes. Ortizs bail increased to 1. 5 million. Hell be back in court later this month.
