Whole foods recently decided to sell rabbit meat and some customers didnt like the idea. Our Investigation Unit dug into the records to see if the meat is meeting the standard whole foods promises its customers. Vicky nguyenwin is here is here with what she founding. Reporter it is to sell the best high quality humanely raised meat. You may pay more but youre supposed to get more. But usda inspection reports show the company is falling short of its mission and the actual demand for rabbit meat may not be as big as whole foods suggested. Fresh and frozen a new white meat is available at whole foods Stores Across the country. Rabbit. Reporter whole foods started selling rabbit meat last summer in seven out of its 11 regions in the United States including Northern California. These are already exploited animals that we hold dear. Reporter tara baxter doesnt mince words when describing her reaction to the decision. I live with two rescued rabbits and it hurt my heart. I expected more from whole foods. Its atrocious that they have decided to sell a domestic breed of pet in their meat case. Reporter the breed, new zealand rabbit like this one, which are among the 3. 2 million pet rabbits living in u. S. Homes. According to the largest pet ownership survey rabbits are the fifth most common household pet. They learn their names, they play with toys they bond for life with their humans. Reporter what makes a pet a protein source isnt the issue. Ran it advocates also have a beef with how these animals go from farm to table. Theyre farming these an maams inmals in a state where its illegal for people to get footage of how the animals are being raised. Reporter shes referring to laws that criminalize people who take photos of farm activity without consent. Iowa is one of those states. And its the source of the rabbits sold at whole foods across the bay area. Through a federal records request we obtained the usda inspection reports for iowa rabbits from january 2014 to february of this year. Records show the number of rabbits dead in the yard and dead on arrival before they were slaughtered. The numbers range from none on some days to 30 dead in the yard one day in march and 38 dead on arrival on a single day in july. Thats a red flag for us. Reporter the government doesnt have a standard for an acceptable death rate and iowa rabbit declined to tell us the total number of rabbits processed on those days. Inspection reports further reveal the usda sent a letter of caution warning iowa rabbit for sending out multiple cartons of rabbit meat improperly labeled as usda inspected when they were not. That prompted the plant to issue a voluntary recall. Inspectors also found fecal smears on the back tail area of rabbits in their final rinse and skinned rabbits routinely coming into contact with unskinned rabbits, which often had grossly contaminated pelts. Contamination is best avoided because its not planned on being removed later in the process. And according to whole foods farm animal and meat quality standards, no crates cages or tethers are permitted. But inspectors noted wet rabbits in bottom crates writing this is a concern both as an Animal Welfare issue and as a sanitary dressing issue. Whole foods also says food and water are always available for its rabbits, but inspectors found rabbits overnighted in crates during cold weather had no access to water because the water sources tended to freeze. Theyre factory farmed just like any other factory farmed animal. Reporter iowa ran it declined our request for an interview but said any of our products sold bearing the usda inspection mark enshoes the customer that our rabbit products were in full kplienz with inspection rules. We work closely with the usda to ensure the safest standards possible. Records are incomplete because they only contain observations but do not include the actions taken by our company. When we asked what those actions were the company did not respond. Its not inhumane its animal processing. Reporter rich larson has taught courses at san jose state covering food safety and sanitation since 1995. When it comes to usda standards, larson says whats happening at iowa rabbit is not unusual. The context of this is slaughtering animals. And fecal matter is just part of whats going to be presenting in that process. To keep that from getting to the consumer is a concern. What i saw in the usda reports was minor corrections that were an ongoing process. Reporter but what about demand for this meat . Larson who also teaches Restaurant Management says even in the foodie culture of the bay area rabbit is not a popular meat among consumers. Theres very few restaurants that have rabbit on the menu. Reporter whole foods says the whole reason it started selling rabbit was demand. In a press release the company said for many years lots of customers have requested that we carry rabbit. But what are believed to be sales figures shared with us from an internal whole foods source reveal a different story. A snapshot of sales show the 41 stores in the Northern California district sold an average of 5. 8 rabbits per week per store. Are you selling a lot of them . A few. Reporter whole foods declined our interview request. Meanwhile, a petition to get whole foods to stop selling rabbit has collected more than 40,000 signatures. Hi sweetie. Come here handsome. Coming up next on reality check, kentucky senator rand paul splashed across headlines today with a 10. 5 hour talk that hes calling a filibuster against the patriot act. Did he filibuster or create the illusion of a filibuster . Did he do anything significant . That story next. The man who runs the boy scouts says its just a matter of time before its Organization Must allow for gay scout leaders. Boy scout president robert gates urged the group to change its ban on openly gay leaders or face potential legal battles. The former secretary of defense went on to note the view on gay scout masters is changing and scouts must change with it or become irrelevant. Regional Boy Scout Councils are actively defying that ban and gates says he will not revoke their charters. A lot of cheering. The s p 500 closed at a record high for the tenth time this year. The market edged higher as Rising Oil Prices boosted energy stocks. The dow picked up slightly as did the nasdaq. Nothing surprising about this report especially here in the bay area. California home prices have now reached their highest point in seven and a half years, but that isnt slowing sales, as you probably know. A Company Called core logic says the median price statewide is now 405,000. In the bay area, a lot more, about 500,000. More than 40,000 homes were sold in april statewide. Certainly still very wintry feeling outside. I know. I know you guys are edging for that warmer weather, i can feel it. Its going to be coming our way. Were tracking that memorial day weekend forecast and how hot in just a few minutes. There was a whole lot of talking. Rand paul took the senate stage to 10 1 2 hours last night. It was meant to stop the nsas collection of our phone records. So the question is did it work . Sam brock is here with tonights reality check. I think we can obey the constitution reporter rand pauls twitter timeline helped fuel the hype for a heartpounding filibuster. Theres plenty of hash tags standwithrand calls to end nsa spying. Ive chosen to filibuster the patriot act, because the patriot act is the most unpatriotic of acts. Reporter at 1 30 paul tweeted, quote, ive just taken the senate floor to begin a filibuster of the patriot act renewal. My voice is rapidly leaving, my bedtime has long since passed. Reporter and paul did speak for 10 1 2 hours. He just didnt hold up any legislation before a vote the very definition of a full buster. He could have talked about the colors of the rainbow. It didnt really matter. There was no bill up for the senate to consider that day. Reporter according to accounts from journalists present, like this one from the daily beast he addressed, quote, a nearly vacant room. All those empty chairs you see behind rand paul look a lot like the empty chairs that you dont see. He was talking to tv cameras and he was talking to those people interested in knowing more about rand paul. He was talking to those people who might be interested in voting for him downstream. Reporter pauls goal to force the government not to renew several portions of the patriot act that would continue to give the nsa broad power over collecting your personal information. I relinquish the floor. Reporter the patriot act actually expires after may the 31st and the Congress Might not have time to get to it before they recess for the memorial day holiday. But that has nothing to do with rand paul and nothing to do with a filibuster that actually wasnt a filibuster. The reality here is that theyll probably delay talks on the patriot act until after they get back when they reignite a discussion on a very controversial issue. Im sam brock, thats this edition of reality check. Back to you. But he made his point. Thank you, sam. Lets turn things over to jeff. Jeff, i know its a little early, its only thursday but we are thinking about friday saturday, sunday. And we have a great forecast after being locked in the cloud cover for the past seven days. You can get an early preview of that on the scrolling sevenday ticker at the bottom of the screen. As we look at Doppler Radar right now, we are tracking some drizzle at the immediate coastline and theres also this lone shower right to the south and also to the east of livermore. It may hold up towards the tracy triangle over the next 30 minutes or so. If you know anyone heading from livermore down towards the corridor those roads will likely be slick. As we take you to our rainfall totals, it did get bumped up from some drizzle in the overnight hours. Specifically in berkeley with 0. 13 downtown sf 0. 06 of an inch. We do have a mix of some sun in some areas and still a lot of clouds in the south bay and 64. In San Francisco, 63 right now and then check out the north bay. This has been the best camera all day long in tiburon from weather underground. You can still see some height to the cand just an allaround 10 when it comes to one of the most beautiful weather pictures today. Lets take you into the forecast as we head through tomorrow. Again, its not going to be smooth sailing for the morning forecast. We still have a possibility of showers and it is going to exist from the north bay down to the south bay. Temps in the low 50s. You need the light jacket and also the umbrella in the back seat. Now heres the reason why i dont think youre going to need the umbrella for the entire day. As we get a look at the futurecast, youll find by 6 00 a. M. Its going to be again at the immediate coastline right down towards the east bay, possibly the south bay for the best chance of some drizzle and some spotty showers. That is likely going to linger right through about 10 00 in the morning. But after that we generally see our chances of any kind of showers really beginning to wind down with areas of sun building in across contra costa, alameda counties and also right on down to san jose. As we advance this more wed like to get rid of the cloud cover here by friday night but it looks like its going to linger into saturday morning with still more drizzle. Once we get over the Morning Hours or saturday then we will find some of the sunniest weather we have seen in seven days build in for an awesome memorial day weekend forecast. Lets go ahead and take you into the microclimates here as we head through your friday. What youre going to find is across the south bay temperatures will be in the 60s for tomorrow. Again, some areas will have that better shot of getting showers than others. Namely right throughout the los gatos hills well have the best chance of showers coming into the mix and were looking for a high down in the south bay at 67 degrees. For the peninsula, best chance of showers will be in pacifica and in the marina also a slight risk there. For the north bay, east bay and also the trivalley well have a slight risk of showers through the day in Napa Santa Rosa and for the trivalley its going to be dry with temperatures in the low 70s. That memorial day weekend forecast does stay sunny and mild. Check it out as we head through sunday, were still focusing on upper 70s in the north bay. I dont know i think ill be spontaneous and maybe head up to wine country on sunday. That sounds perfect, jeff. What time are you picking us up . I dont know. What about like 10 00 .
