And as weve been reporting during this eventful night on this of all days we also have the start of a ground war in the gaza strip with israeli troops invading tonight under a sky lit up by flares and incoming fire. So we begin this second half hour of the special edition of our newscast tonight with the downing of this 777. Nbcs tom costello who covers aviation for us has been covering this all day long. Tom, good evening once again. The malaysian Prime Minister said late today there was no distress call from this airline and it was flying in an ore declared safe by global Civil Aviation authorities. It left amsterdam at 1 30 p. M. Local time bound for kuala lumpur. They lost contact with the plane. Very quickly the Ukrainian Government reported that russianbacked separatists had shot down the plane using a surfacetoair missile. U. S. Intelligence and military sources confirm to nbc news that infrared satellites detected the missile laumpl and explosion. Malaysian flight 17 was a boeing 777 carrying 290 passengers and crew members. Were told they came from nearly a dozen countries. Many europeans and malaysians on board. Whoa dont have confirmation if any americans are on board. The plane went down many Eastern Ukraine only about 30 miles from the russian border in an area that is currently held by prorussian separatists. The Ukrainian Government late today released a recording of a telephone, a radio conversation between separatists and a russian officer were told discussing the shootdown after the fact. The separatist denied they are responsible and instead blame ukraine. Coming just as you know, 4 1 2 months after malaysia flight. 370 disappeared on its way to beijing. It has yet to be found. They believe its in the atlantic but not a single piece of wreckage has been found. Tom costello in d. C. , thanks. Lets go to our chief Foreign Affairs correspondent andrea mitchell. Tell us what is happening behind the scenes tonight. Behind the scenes the president in new york and the security advisers in washington talking about this. The shootdown of this Malaysian Airliner may have been deliberate, perhaps a mistake but the intercepted communications that tom referred to that ukraines government said that a russian separatist leader was talking about it to a russian intelligence officer. That is pretty damning if verified, acknowledging a passenger plane had been hit. It happened close to the border. Tonight in his first Public Comments Vladimir Putin blamed kiev. Telling the audience, quote, without question, the state over whose territory this happened bears the responsibility for the terrible tragedy. This tragedy would not have happened had there been peace in this land, if hostilities had not resumed in the southeast of ukraine. That is in sharp contrast to putins claim because u. S. Officials say it is russia and its followers who violated a ceasefire with ukraine and sharplies ask lated arms delivery to the separatists in recent weeks. Ironically, president obama was on the phone with putin this morning telling him the u. S. Was sanctioning him for escalating the conflict when both leaders first heard that the plane was down. Brian . Unbelievable, what a mess. Andrea mitchell in washington for us tonight. Andrea, thanks. At this point lets bring in nbc news aviation expert greg fife at the ntsb, veteran pilot himself. Hes with us tonight from denver. Greg, ntsb is so good after all this many years at what they do and yet picking up on what we were talking about with debra, this has happened in a war zone, the scene has already been compromised. What would you want to get organized there first . I think the big thing here, brian, is that this is a criminal investigation. The ntsb and its counter parts typically are looking at mechanical malfunctions and failures and operation of the airplane by the flight and crew to see if there is any kind of issue to see that they have to address. This is a crime now. The investigative complexity the going to be a little different and in support of those National Security folks that were going to be responsible for identifying who shot the missile and what the intent was of that missile strike. Greg, theres also two similar tragedies here. Theres the families, the loss of life. Theres the politics back and forth andrea just talked about. But for this air carrier, malaysia, the second straight tragedy, and for this aircraft, 777 is Long Haul International workhorse of the skies. There are hundreds, thousands of them aloft at any given time. A tragedy for that as well. Safely record was pretty sterling before these two incidents. And the Safety Record is still sterling because the last two events with mh370 and mh17 now were not attributed to the airplane. These are Extraordinary Events taking place. Unfortunately malaysia has beared the burden. This is now number two. And theyre just trying to g it mh370 and itsish shos issues u control. Greg fife, formerly of the ntsb. Greg, thank you very much, as always. Back to amsterdam we go. Nbc at the airplane where the flight originated where families of the victims continue to gather. Thanks once again. Passengers on board that plane were from all over europe, asia, even australia. Most of them on board, 154 of the 295 on board were dutch. Were at the height of the vacation season here in the netherlands. Kids out of school, families are trying to go out and make the best of the summer. Families of the loved up withes believed to be on board gathered here earlier today to try and find something, anything about what happened. But they were swiftly taken away to a hotel and away from media. Many of them not showing very much emotion. We were able to hear from one family, a Woman Holding a baby who said they just missed this flight. They were supposed to be on it, but thankfully missed it and booked on a later flight. She says she felt like she got a second chance. I will tell you just from covering mh370, the disappearance over malaysia, it is a eerie site to see malaysian families going back to the government, going back to the Malaysian Airline demanding answer, crying out and getting frustratingly little information. You can only imagine what it must feel like for the people of this country to see this happen to their airline once again and not really understand why. Brian . Katie, youre right. The confluence of events here deserves repeating. This air disaster over ukraine, again, involves a boeing 777 flown by Malaysia Airlines. The same type of wide body aircraft and the same airline as flight 370 which has vanished, still without a trace, over four months ago. We get a report on that aspect of this story tonight from nbcs ron mott. Reporter the pain and ang glish for surviving family members of any airplane crash are raw. I need you to help me find my son, this mother cried. I just want to see my son. Her son was on Malaysia Airlines flight 370 which disappeared on march 8th in route to kuala lumpur to beijing. Those same families are now offering condolences to another group, the loved ones of mh17 saying on their facebook page, our hearts reach out to them. For struggling Malaysia Airlines its two lost flights in four months, 534 lives. Reaction on twitter, shock and surprise. Unreal, one tweet says. Malaysia Airlines Crash again. How do you convince people to fly your airline anymore when youve had not one but two terrible tranl difficults in such a short period of time . Reporter mh370 remays a mystery. After months of hightech searching by air and underwater, analyzing cockpit communication, tracking the flights path on radar, tens of millions of dollars spent and still no clue where the plane is. Just last week the airline said our top priority remains to look for the missing mh370 and giving closure to the families of those on board mh370. This is a tragic day and what has already been a tragic year for malaysia. Reporter its a largely unprecedented bout with tragedy for one airline. Of course a terrible human tragedy, first and foremost. A financial tragedy, too. Not much precedent for an airline, even experiencing all of this, let alone surviving it. An airline facing the unmanageable, on going search for a missing plane deep in the indian ocean and now this, a plane shot out of the year in the middle of a war zone. Ron mott, nbc news, chicago. Back to the other major story were following on this thursday night. Israel announcing a Ground Invasion tonight against hamas militants in the gaza strip. Big escalation now after ten days of back and forth conflict. Our chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel is in the gaza strip tonight. Richard, to review, gaza roughly the size of the city of detroit. Population roughly 2 million. They cannot come and go. They have to stay in the gaza strip largely. Israel tonight wants this called an incursion and not an invasion. Whatever that distinction is about. Have they given any indication of how long they intend to stay . They are not giving any specific indication. I think the reason theyre calling it an incursion instead of an invasion is israel right now is just talking about stopping and destroying tunnels that hamas uses to get from gaza into israel. And those tunnels, by definition, are all along the border region. Israel does not intend to reoccupy the gaza strip. It doesnt want to even destroy hamas or try and take control of the territory. It is putting forth quite limited military objectives. Israel is also calling on palestinians to leave the border area. As you mentioned, this is a closed area. Palestinians cant leave. They cant go to egypt. They cant go into israel. So israel in many ways is bombing a population, telling a population to get away from the borders, that is a continuative group of palestinians. And because weve seen about 1,000 rockets coming out of gaza, launched by hamas into israel, every time israel has struck back theres the chance of hitting civilians over 200 have died so far. How can they intend to keep civilian deaths down during this Ground Invasion or incursion . Well, there have been three of these kind of operations, wars over the last 5 1 2 years. And they generally do get very bloody. If this continues over the next several days we could very likely see hundreds if not more palestinian deaths. This has not been an even fight. So far weve seen well over 200 palestinians killed in the past ten days. Many of them children. We saw those graphic images last night. So far, just one israeli killed. I think that were going to see that same disproportion continue as this operation continues. All right, Richard Engel on what is still the start of yet another violent night there in gaza. Richard, thanks. After another quick break here were back with more of our coverage of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight 17 including previous incidents that immediately came to mind amid word of a missile taking down a commercial jetliner. So now the fiery crash of this Malaysia Airlines 777 takes its place among the Worst Airline incidents ever. This same airline lost this same type of aircraft in the indian ocean months ago. 777 Safety Record had been unblemished prior to these two incidents. The aircraft remains an international workhorse of the air. Today also happens to be the 18th anniversary of the crash of twa flight 800. On this night back in 1996. That was a Center Fuel Tank explosion. But sadly there have been other examples of hostile actions taking down commercial jetliners. We get more tonight from nbcs kate snow. Reporter it was september 1st, 1983, the height of the cold war. United states today accused the soviet union of shooting down a korean jumbo jet. Reporter days later president reagan addressed the nation. Im coming before you tonight about the Korean Airline massacre. The attack by the soviet union against 269 innocent men, women and children aboard an unarmed korean passenger plane. Reporter korean Airlines Flight 007 was supposed to fly from new york city to seoul stopping over in anchorage, alaska, but it drifted off course and headed toward tw soviet air space. Warning shots were ignored. And then a soviet Fighter Pilot fired a missile and uttered words that would go down in history. The target is destroyed. Reporter everyone on board was killed. A tragedy that further inflamed tensions between the u. S. And ussr. We can see no excuse whatsoever for this appalling act. Reporter when a plane is shot out of the sky, there are rarely survivors. Bob haguer covered aviation for nbc news for more than three decades. Where theyve recovered the planes recorders from previous incidents like this, you hear the noise of the missile hitting the engine of the plane. Milliseconds of a bam and nothing. That quick. Its over. We are following developments in the persian gulf where theres been a major tragedy and perhaps a major mistake. Reporter in 1988 it was the u. S. That made a mistake. A surfacetoair missile was fired from the deck of the u. S. S. Vincent at what the u. S. Navy thought was an iranian fighter jet. We got it. Dead on reporter the sailors even cell are brated what seemed like a combat victoria ary. They were wrong. The u. S. Government deeply regrets this incident. Reporter u. S. Officials took responsibility for killing 274 passengers and 16 crew members. Two missiles were fired and the deed was done. Reporter in that case it was clear what happened early on. Tonight, there are far more questions than answers. At least a dozen commercial planes have been shot down in recent history using military grade weapons. Most recently in 2001 over the black sea, a siberian Airlines Flight with 78 passengers on board shot down accidentally by the Ukrainian Military during a training exercise, brian. So much we dont know. Still beyond the sadness of this our National Correspondent kate snow. Always a pleasure. Thanks. Were back in a moment with more of our breaking News Coverage plus a check on some of the other news of this day. Were back with some of the days other news starting with those wildfires ongoing in washington state. Three fires are burning in the central part of the state. About 1,700 homes have been told to evacuate though few people have done so at this point. Nearly 1,000 firefighters are on the job. State of emergency in effect. The largest of the fires covers 35 square miles. And more Severe Weather to report tonight. The scene in north texas today after a big storm caused flash flooding there. One town got ten inches of rain just in the overnight hours. Sadly another storm on the way for that region. Some big news from microsoft today. The company said it plans to cut as many as 18,000 jobs over the next year. Thats about 14 of the workforce. Its the largest layoff in the companys history. About twothirds will come from nokia which was recently acquired by microsoft. The aim is to make microsoft more competitive with apple and google in mobile and in cloud computing. And in the Media Business all eyes on time warner which may be in play. Rupert murdock has made an unsolicited bid for the home of warners brothers, hbo. While the bid was rejected, there is speculation it could open the door to others in what has become a season of media mergers. Two losses to report tonight from the world of entertainment beginning with the death of johnny winter. The blues guitarist came from beaumont, texas. In the 60s, rose to prominence with his younger brother, edgar. Both were albinos. Johnny became a rock star in the 70s. Never strayed far from the blues or his roots. He produced several albums, won three grammys along the way. He leaves behind 20 studio albums, played on many more. He was on tour in europe when he died yesterday in switzerland. He planned to tour the u. S. This year are. Johnny winter was 70. And Elaine Stritch has died. A legend on broadway and the entertainment business. Her career spanned over six decades. She was a new york institution, brassy with a voice to match. She often worked blue but wore white, at least the blouse accompanied by black tights and high heels, her signature uniform on and off stage. She worked with some of the alltime great composers including sondheim who wrote her signature song, the ladies who lunch, from company. She was introduced to a whole new audience on tv in the last decade or so during her emmy winning turn as alec baldwins mother on 30 rock. She died at home in michigan. She was 89 years old. Another break, we are back in a moment with a final check on tonights lead story. Lets go back quickly to tom costello in our washington newsroom with a final update on this downed jetliner. Tom. Reporter brian, u. S. Authorities say so far theres been no discussion about sending u. S. Investigators into ukraine to help with the investigation. Frankly, because it is a war zone and because rebels are Still Holding this territory and in fact in possession of the plane, that seems unlikely at this point. Youve got to wonder whether there will be a full investigation into what happened here by an outside source. If the rebels brought this plane down, it may not be in their interest to do a full investigation. We are told by the malaysians that the ukrainian Prime Ministers asking the rebels to open up a humanitarian corridor into the wreckage. That gives you a sense of whos in charge there. It isnt the Ukrainian Government right now. As this investigation goes forward, this may very well come out of military and intelligence circles, the u. S. At the pentagon and cia advising what they have, whatever information they have as to who may have fired this missile that brought down the plane and of course the ukrainian with the tapes which allegedly showed russianbacked commanders were behind it. Brian, back to you. Tom costello has been on this story all day. Well come on in primetime if and when we learn more. Thats going to do it for now. Our onehour long special edition of nightly news on this thursday night. Thank you for being here with us. Im brian williams. We hope to see you right back here tomorrow evening. We hope to see you right back here tomorrow evening. Good night. Captions by vitac www. Vitac. Com this is truly a grave situation. 300 souls have been lost. Warning, 4 30 a. M. In ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers are guarding the crash site. International investigators are wait for access. One of the primary questions, who is to blame for this disaster . Thanks for being with us. This is a special edition of nbc bay area news. What they are finding on the ground, a field of horror, wreckage, bodies in a war torn area of ukraine. The malaysian jetliner heading from amsterdam to kuala lumpur shot down with 289 people on board. Lives ended with bitter conflict between ukraine and russia. No one is stepping forward to accept responsibility. A Ukrainian Government official says the plane was shut down by a russian built missile. A system used by both russia and ukraine. Officials tell nbc news they have confirmation a ground to aramis shill knocked that 777 out of the sky. This is a politically charged story as well. President obama called ukraines president pothis afternoon. Mark matthews has reaction tonight but we begin with steven stock from our investigative unit. Steph stephen, there were warnings here for several airlines. Thats right, raj. We pieced together several flight paths over europe and over this region dating back over the last several weeks. Though Many Airlines do appear to have avoided ukraine all together, several airlines including malaysia air continued to fly over the country regularly, despite the conflict on the ground below. And despite the fact that at least one cargo plane had already been shot out of the same sky in the same region less than a week ago. The pictures show the aftermath of what u. S. Officials now believe was a missile strike on the boeing 777 flying at 33,000 feet. Data from the internet site flightaware shows Malaysia Airline 17 ending abruptly just west of the russian border. This despite several warnings about the safety of the airspace over ukraine. First warnings put out on april 3rd by both the faa and the international Civil Aviation organization warning pilots of, quote, the possible existence of serious risk to the safety of all International Civil pligfli. Those were specific only to the crimean region of ukraine. Ukrainian officials warned pilots not to fly between 26,000 and 2,000 feet above Eastern Ukraine in the very reeregion it was shot down. Data shows that malaysia air was at 31,000 feet over germany but apparently ascended to 33,000 feet for its flight over ukraine. Malaysias Prime Minister and the icao both say the plane was not in restricted airspace when it was shot down. Even so, experts say flying over such hot spots can be risky. Its incumbent upon the airline to make a determination as to whether or not theyre going to continue. Reporter greg fife is a retired investigator for the National Transportation safety board and serves as an aviation consultant for nbc news. Their perception of the threat, especially from a missile that would reach 33,000 feet, they may not have perceived that flightover as a threat as it has now been panned out. And continued to fly those prescribed routes. Reporter this is not the first time malaysia air flew over this region. In fact, we researched data from flight aware showing the same malaysia air flight from amsterdam to kuala lumpur flying over ukraine. Several other airlines including air france and Royal Dutch Airlines also flew over the same region. The fuel is cheaper if you can cut the total distance. And so pilots are always trying to fly the most direct distance at their optimum altitude. Reporter jay rollins is a retired commercial pilot. He flew decades for american airlines. Rollins now serves as a Safety Consultant and runs his own safety aviation blog on the internet. Obviously they wanted to go that way because its shorter distance, more direct to kuala lumpur but sometimes its worth going around an area of uncertain hostility. Reporter watching realtime radar data soon after malaysia air flight 17 went down showed many flights apparently avoiding the area. The radar showed heavy use over western europe but little activity in the skies over ukraine and western russia. Now, piecing together flight data we learned that malaysia air flight 17 climbed from 31,000 feet to 33,000 feet just prior to entering ukrainian airspa airspace. That would indicate that the pilots were aware of the flight restrictions and purposely climbed to that that altitude in order to avoid the restricted airspace. The entire airspace in that region of ukraine has now been restricted by International Aviation authorities after the shootdown and we just got this, minutes ago from the faa. Also banning any flights over that area of ukraine. Guys . All right, stephen, thank you. Were there any americans on board . Authorities are still working to identify all 298 victims. This is what we know at this hour. The passengers are from at least nine different countries. Most of them from the net there larnds. 45 are from malaysia including the 15 crew members. The nationalities of 41 people have not yet been verified. Therefore, no word yet on any americans. Thousands of miles away from that crash site here in the bay area many are watching those tragic events and are angered by that Deadly Strike against ma y Malaysia Airlines flight 17. Nbc bay areas Mark Matthews has been meeting with local ukrainians. Mark, this tragedy makes that conflict in that part of the world very real for many other people, too. Well, the ukraine kranamericans ive been talking to hope that it does. Were outside the ukrainian consulate here in san francisco. The people we talked with today pretty united in their support for ukraine and in their opposition to the russianbacked rebels. Sunnyve sunnyvale resident is sorry. I put the blame on putin. Reporter like every one of the ukrainianamericans we spoke with today the crash is seen as an act of war perpetrated by prorussian rebels. For me its almost like a 95 , 99 this is oath either ru or prorussian terrorists. They admitted to blowing up a plane and a couple hours later, we didnt do that. I heard the separatists actually claimed a victory of having shot down a military aircraft before they realized that it was a commercial airliner. Reporter the hope among those we talked with is that this tragedy will focus attention on the conflict in ukraine and spur more military support from europe and the united states. This will get the attention of the world in that area. The difference is that you cannot turn your eyes away kind of. You can blink on these. We cant let, you know, a country be bullied the way that ukraine is being bullied right now. I think its time to act. Otherwise europe is in trouble again. The feelings of those that we spoke with today sanctions from the u. S. Will not be enough. But perhaps this crash will be a turning point. Reporting from the Ukrainian Embassy here on bush street in san francisco, Mark Matthews, nbc bay area news. Were going to continue our coverage on our website. All you have to do is click on the story and it will lead you to a ukrainian plane crash section which has raw video and still pictures. Again, for more information, nbcbayarea. Com. There is another Major International story unfolding at this hour. A high stakes move in the middle east. Israeli troops are on the offensive moving into the gaza strip on the ground. Many people here in the bay area are closely watching this crisis. Related to a palestinian teenager killed in that region last week. She says the violence against civilians, especially children, needs to stop. They what hamas wants is peace. They want to live together. They want people to come in and out of the gaza strip freely. Lets just be human. Israeli supporters disagree. A spokesman with the Jewish Federation of the Silicon Valley says its a tragedy but israel has been forced to respond in a military fashion. It also involves a final analysis that theres going to be civilian suffering. I think that has to be do with the fact that hamas does not care if they suffer. He added the violence is a loselose situation for everyone involved. As weve seen with so Many International tranl difficults, todays news rattled wall street. The markets endured a volatile session as news of the plane crash sent stocks tumbling. Now, that slide intensified with news of israels push into gaza as well.
