This is what has firefighters concerned. Dry vegetation. Mix in a little heat and wind, and you have a very bad combination. California governor jerry brown weighed in today on the situation here in the state, saying its bracing for its toughest fire season yet. Less wind and cooler temperatures this weekend have actually helped crews in san diego, though, largely subdue nearly a dozen fires there. Since the middle of last week, fire there has consumed at least 26,000 acres. So far this year, cal fire has responded to over 1500 wildfires across the state. More than twice as many fires as average. San jose fire captain rob brown says theyre watching conditions closely and are staffed and ready to go. Its not really as green as you think it is. I was just out in the hills over by Communications Hill this morning, and the grass is dry. The fuel moisture there is ready to burn. Down around 9 . So the grasses right now, even with the higher humidity, are ready to burn as far as what were seeing. Pretty much right now were in the thick of it, and this is only the middle part of may. Reporter today on abc news, governor jerry brown said were on a collision course with nature, and were going to have to adapt. He said the state has 5,000 firefighters and 600 million appropriated to battling wildfires but warns that might not be enough. He said thousands of additional firefighters could be needed in the future, saying the state is on the front lines of climate change, which is making our weather hotter. Even though the wind direction is somewhat favorable for keeping humidity levels a bit higher. Those gusts up to 38 miles per hour. You can see the winds just whipping those low clouds around. These wind speed coming in off the ocean 15 to 30 miles per hour. Keeping humidity levels up for now, above 74 or close to it in San Francisco. So weve got moist marine air pushed inland, but the hill tops still quite dry thanks to that d4 exceptional drought over the central and south bay. Coming up, well see weather dropping in from the north that will bring us changes ahead into the beginningf the new week starting off on tuesday. It looks like well see a chance of some thundershowers, which may spark some fires if not enough rain falls. Sometimes referred to as dry lightning. The other thing to watch will be a change in the wind direction come wednesday and thursday. Dry north winds will be picking up. Four fires still burned in san diego county, including three at camp pendleton, but most of the danger has passed. A dozen fires tore through the area over the past six days, destroying at least 47 homes. The damage from all the fires estimated at 20 million. A driveby shooting sent a man to the hospital, and the victim was riding a bike in the south bay when he was hit. The shooting happened just before 3 00 this afternoon on south capital avenue near woodmore drive in san jose. Police say the victim was rushed to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. Witnesses describe the suspects vehicle as a late 1990s marooncolored honda with front ends damage. If you have any information, youre asked to call san jose police. Happening now, hes mentally challenged and off his medication. And right now, no one knows where he is. The search is on in the south bay for special needs patient 52yearold joseph twitchell. He left an assisted living home in south san jose yesterday. Has not been seen since. Police say he has the mental capacity of a 10yearold is especially at risk because of the need for his daily medications. He was last seen with a brown baseball hat. If you have any information, police would like to hear from you. A dangerous chain of events unfolded earlier this morning. Chp says about 2 00 this morning, a disabled car was pulled over on southbound 101 near old oakland road. A man on a motorcycle didnt see the stopped car and crashed into him. Then another car hit the median as that driver tried to avoid the crash. The motorcyclist was seriously hurt and taken to the hospital. The other injuries are described as not major. Well, there are no major problems at this years beta breakers race. Thousands filled San Franciscos street for the annual tradition. Police say there were about a dozen or so arrests. Nbc bay areas Monte Francis is at the finish line for more. Reporter good evening. The race officially ended at noon and was followed by a finish line festival. The crews are still here busy breaking everything down. The great highway reopened just within the last hour or so. Now, Race Organizers say 40,000 runners registered and took part in the 7. 5mile race. Many others didnt register, and its estimated about 100,000 spectators were here at beta breakers today. We just got some updated numbers from San Francisco police. They say officers made 24 arrests for public intoxication. They issued three citations for urinating in public and made three drugrelated arrests. One person was also arrested after entering the bison park in golden gate park. Three runners suffered minor injuries during the race. The only snag was concerns of the stability of a metal archway put up over the road on the hayes street hill. Once that was fixed, runners were on their way. Its the people watching. Its the support from the city. Its getting down to the breakers and partying afterwards. Its just you know, its the quintessential San Francisco party every year. Reporter kenyan jeffrey kaneesi won the race. Diane johnson was the winner for the women. Alcohol was banned from the race a few years ago, but given what we saw here today, many people still found a way to drink either before or during the race. There was also heightened security this year with a 20 increase in the number of Police Officers patrolling the race. Back to you. Well, gas prices are dropping across the united states. A new survey shows the average price of regular gas has dropped 3 cents a gallon during the past two weeks. The decrease comes after gas prices rose nearly 43 cents earlier this year. The National Average is currently at 3. 62 a gallon for regular. Of the cities surveyed, San Francisco ranked the most expensive. But we did find the lowest price at the arco for 3. 99 in San Francisco. The cheapest gas we could find in oakland, 3. 95 at eagles gas on high street. And the lowest gas prices we could find in san jose, the gas and shop on mckey road for 3. 83. At t says it is buying directv for 49 billion. The move could improve dallasbased at ts Internet Service by pushing existing uverse tv subscribers into video over satellite service. Between now and 9 00 tonight in the east bay, youre getting that view of the weather all across the bay area right now. Gusty winds. Up to 30 miles an hour into the evening. By tomorrow morning, well start to see patchy low clouds approach the coastline and around the peninsula. Might have some mist with some of those low clouds early in the morning. Then watching increasing clouds building. Area of low pressure drops down from the pacific northwest, which is spinning off the coast of oregon. That should drop in closer to Northern California during the day tomorrow. So as you wake up tomorrow morning, high clouds in addition to those low clouds well see on the coast. Then for areas north of San Francisco, a light chance of seeing a few showers on monday. Then notice tuesday, a chance of a few showers along the south coast around the santa cruz mountains. As the cooler air aloft combines with daytime heating, especially over the hill tops, this will be a recipe for seeing showers and possibly cold enough for snow at 5,500 feet. Thats a good recipe for making hail, which gives us lightning, which gives us thunderstorms. Well be seeing that in the north bay and possibly the east bay. So rainfall projections, this just mainly for tuesday. Some places could get enough to wet the ground and more than that in some spots. But if you have lightning and less than 0. 05 inches of rain, given the drought conditions, thats not enough rain really to put out any potential lightning spark fires. That is something we have to watch out for on tuesday. The winds pick up out of the north and thats going to dry out things even more towards the middle part of the week. A chance of snow showers in the sierra, at least briefly. Then well see the transition to some drier weather and warmer temperatures as that low begins to scoot off towards the east. Well see High Pressure building in. Thats going to lead to our temperatures climbing on up. Thursday into friday were looking at highs rebounding as we approach memorial day weekend back into the mid to upper 80s by next friday. You see the changes in the sevenday forecast. Tomorrow, san jose, 70. Looking at temperatures around San Francisco in the low 70s. Cooler for the first half of the week for san jose and San Francisco. Then you see the numbers jumping up towards the end of the week. Well see the numbers in the mid80s around san jose. Notice the chance of showers as early as tomorrow in santa rosa and napa. For the north bay, looking at two days for a chance of showers. Best chance to come in on tuesday.
