Reporter on a Mission District Street Corner close to midnight, a Group Sharing a drink may not seem out of place. But what these folks are going to do next thank you for joining this moment. Reporter well, that story this is a very emotional moment. Reporter emotional for dean because on this very spot 30 years ago his life changed. It was 1992, and dean, then in marketing, was celebrating his 30th birthday at a bar with friends. When he got up and announced he was going to run 30 miles. And they looked at me and they said dean, youre not a runner. Youre drunk. And i said i know i am drunk, but im still going to do it. Reporter and that is just what dean did that night, and what he and his friends are going to do again on this night and into the morning to celebrate. Back then, dean was not the extreme athlete he is today. What he was unhappy with his life and wanting to make a change. Ten miles down the road, the tequila started wearing off. I thought what the heck am i doing . A really bad idea. But i dont know. I looked up and i saw the stars. And its as if god spoke to me. I felt like for the first time in my life i ament to be right where i was at that time in the universe. Reporter dean went on to accomplish Amazing Things in the world of ultramarathoning, playing a big role in vaulting a once obscure sport into the spotlight. It wasnt, however, dean says until he wrote a book about his experience that his true calling emerged. He learned that from the thousands of letters from people who said his words changed their lives. Now i have a purpose. What other gift can you give to someone than the gift of inspiration . Reporter its the reason that now 60, dean continues to run with no plans to stop. And while 30 miles isnt a big run for him these days, its where dean stopped the following morning, at the very same seven 11 in Half Moon Bay he did 30 years ago, grateful for a lifes path he never saw coming. So i lived a really charmed, amazing life. And it was because i got drunk on my 30th birthday and walked out of a bar. Now in case youre wondering how dean got home 30 years ago, he called his wife from a pay phone, collect, to come and pick him up. And that is somethi you havent heard of somebody doing in a while. A pay phone, a collect call . A pay phone, a pay phone. Just to drive the nail into this, i talked to him of course after the run. After 30 miles in the middle of the night. He told me later that day he went for a run. 30 miles is nothing for him. 30 miles is nothing. Run more than 300 miles, regularly runs more than 100 miles. I think the rest of us are happy were not doing anything we were doing when we were drunk and 30. That was a good one that he did. On that note. Exactly. Thank you so much. Ooh. Lets talk about the heatwave coming. Its going to be too hot to run later this week. Exactly where i was going to go with that. Numbers are going to be hotter than weve seen all summer long. Really in a couple of years here across the bay area. Lets bring it into that microclimate forecast. And i wanted to show you whats happening with our heatwave. And were going to begin to see this starting to develop as we head through tomorrow. Temperatures are not going to reach their peak tomorrow, but the area of hot High Pressure that is going to be the source of this heatwave is going to begin to get a little stronger to the south. I see numbers warming up few degrees tomorrow. Still got some fog at the coastline. Eventually this High Pressure builds into the pacific, and thats where it gets stronger. Were going to get you back here to this heat on the latest on new updates on temperatures in less than two minutes. But i want to take it right into tomorrow mornings forecast. And you see that fog is yet again back for us here through the bay area. Most clears back by 10 30 in the morning for sunshine. And temperatures to start tomorrow, youre going want to enjoy this right now. We have widespread upper 50s and low 60s through the bay area. Over to the east bay, 58. San francisco, 55. And the north bay at 56. So numbers going up a couple degrees. But, again, the heatwave isnt starting just yet. Down here in the south bay, we can definitely handle this. 83 in cupertino. 93 pleasanton. 79 in hayward. The peninsula, 65 Half Moon Bay. Over to redwood city, 79. San francisco, were still in the 60s. The warmest in the mission at 69. And through the north bay, i have it up to 99 in ukiah. Otherwise 88 in sonoma. Down to mill valley, 78. Lets get it back to the heatwave. We showed you the area of High Pressure thats developing to the south tomorrow. As we hit later on this week, its going to start to move into the pacific and get stronger. Thursday and friday, i do see numbers approaching 100. But this heatwave really starts to pick up steam and get much, much hotter here once we hit saturdays forecast with that dangerous heat. So right now no big changes here on our heat warning thats in place for the entire bay area. I still see places like San Francisco getting up into the 80s. Coastal areas the 70s. And inland valleys could get up as hot as 110 degrees. So how does this compare to our alltime hottest temperature . Thats always a great way to show you where were going to be on the scale of things. And what youll see is monday. Now look likes that would be the hottest day in the upcoming forecast for labor day. At gilroy, getting up to about 107 based on the current forecast. Alltime hot nest gilroy ever was 115. Also livermore 106. Alltime hottest is 113. We may need to make some more adjustments to the temperatures. But right now were getting close. It doesnt look like alltime heat, but definitely recordsetting. My forecast here in San Francisco, we get into the 80s the upcoming weekend and into labor day. Drops by next tsday. And for the inland valleys we get to 102 saturday. 107 on monday. Just scorching for us. And tuesday, 101. Now its all relative. We have had the fog saving us here. The Central Valley has been dealing with temperatures like this on and off for quite some time. Its been a really brutal summer for them. Theyre used to the heat, but fog is not going to be able to save us at this point. Well have to grin and bear it. Get through it. Thank you, jeff.
