What this area has in common with other hot spots are tourism, the thieves are concentrating on people who are unaware that there is a problem. Go to any tourist spot and look around for the shattered glass. Twin peaks has been described as ground zero or auto burglaries. How often do you see burglaries. Every day. Every day. But the retired social worker notes they dont break into every car. There must be something that attracts them. Someone is leaving a jacket or shirt on the backseat. Whatever it is, the number of car burglaries is on the rise and at the same time the number of cellphone robberies is dropping. That drop is linked to the kill switch that cellphone makers have now installed. If i do lose my phone i can track it or turn it off or wipe it completely clean, theres nothing much they can do with it. The theory is, thieves that once were robbing cellphones have now turned to break nook cars. Police dont have the data to make a one to one correlation. But what i can tell you is that the numbers are down for iphone robbery and auto burglary numbers are up. So be aware of auto burglaries. Dont put any valuables in your car, not even your trunk. Two hours from now berkeley will add a plan to add global warning signs to every gas pump in the city. We are live on this first of its kind proposal. It is a proposal that is definitely turning heads. The Berkeley City Council is requiring all of the cities 30 plus gas stations to post pollution warning labels at the gas pump, but not everyones pumped up about it. When we consume gas thats our largest contribution to green house gases. But drivers in berkeley may soon get a friendly reminder just how much they are poll uutg when they gas up. May be the first in the nation to post warning labels at the gas pump. The goal is to put the label at the point of sale so it triggers the connection between wait, im part of this problem. The city council will direct the city manager tonight whether to many have an ordinance saying this. But drivers we talk to say they like the plan.
