You remember this story, Officials Say the boy jumped a fence at the airport, then hitched a ride on a flight bound to hawaii, this is all back in april. The 15 year old survived subzero temperatures during a fivehour flight. At this point, the teen is not facing any charges. A rare sighting in the bay area today. Were talking about rain. It has been raining on and off in some areas. Nbc bay area chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is measuring every droplet falling from the sky. Anything significant . It is certainly significant here for august standards. Its all sparked off by this area of low pressure, also spiraling in some humidity. Lets get right to the rainfall totals. The top rainfall total we had today was martinez coming in at a whopping, for august, again,. 11 of an inch, concord. 09, walnut creek, petaluma,. 04, lafayette, and we have rain happening on the Doppler Radar now, most contained to the north bay. Some areas of light to moderate showers, primarily from santa rosa to petaluma. This is moving off towards the west, so youll likely have showers throughout the next two to three hours. More on that specific timing coming up, but here is some impressive numbers for you. With that. 11 in martinez, we have picked up more rain in 24 hours than all of january of 2014. And keep in mind, ladies, january is usually one of our wettest months across the bay area. Thank you, jeff. A freeway cleanup turned deadly on the peninsula. The chp says a driver plowed into a work crew on the side of highway 101 and a worker was killed. The map shows where it happened on southbound 101 near the marsh road exit. Nbc bay area Kimberly Tere live with how it happened. Kimberly . Reporter jessica, the california Highway Patrol says a woman was driving here southbound on 101 when she lost control of her mercedes. We want to give you a different view. Just after 11 00 this morning, a crew of nine people were doing cleanup work on the side of highway 101 near the marsh road exit when the chp said the woman lost control of her car, hitting two of the workers. At this time we dont know exactly how the vehicle could drive off the freeway. All we know is she for whatever reasons went off the roadway and struck the party, as well as a few vehicles. One of the workers were killed, another person and the driver were taken to the hospital for minor to moderate injuries. Both are expected to survive. We learned caltrans sub contracted the workers to pick up litter on the side of the highway, part of a personal Development Program at jobtrainworks. Org. The Organization Helps atrisk youth and adults develop job skills. The organization issued this statement following the fatal accident. We are shocked and saddened about the tragic accident that took place this morning on highway 101. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those involves and we will be working to provide counseling and support. The department bought the drone back in january without any public input and the move has widely been criticized. But today Police Leaders released a statement saying they will Gather Community feedback before it uses or even tests the drone. They say the device was purchased to help bomb technicians. It might also be used for Public Safety situations such as active shooters or hostage negotiations. New at 5 00 tonight, they con people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, sometimes even their life savings. Four people, all from san jose, are accused of running a ponzi scheme. Investigators say they told people they would invest their money in a variety of businesses and promise profits of 50 to 80 . The group now facing 23 felony counts, including fraud violations and grand theft. Just a couple of hours, salvage crews are going to try once again to pull an abandoned fishing boat out of the water. Meanwhile, we are learning more about the missing skipper. He may be alive, taking off after swimming to shore. Nbc bay areas Mark Matthews is reporting taxpayers may end up footing the bill for the salvage operation. Reporter yes, it looks like that, at least initially. Were waiting, as you say, for a couple of hours until maximum high tide. They pulled this boat up about 70 feet from where it was yesterday. They are hoping to start cutting it up tomorrow morning. The paloma is going to be scrapped and its not coming cheap. The coast guard will pay to have the remaining fuel, if any, removed from the boat and then tomorrow begin the demolition. We would like to be able to take it up in fairly large pieces and break it up further up the beach. Reporter the salvage operator puts the cost at 120,000, 98,000 to cut up the boat and another 20,000 or so to remove the fuel. The coast guard will pay for the fuel removal, the Parks Service will pay to have the boat dismantled and hauled away. Timothy lybrand was operating the boat without insurance. The owner of the boat reportedly hasnt seen lybrand, but there is evidence the skipper made it to shore in this life raft. We think he jumped into that, took about 20 strokes and he was on the beach and he probably hot footed it out of here before hardly anybody knew it was here. Reporter Timothy Lybrand is wanted on a 75,000 warrant out of Santa Clara County, stemming from a small time drug charge in 2010. He failed to show up for a Drug Diversion program and the judge issued the bench warrant in 2012. A tough stand in the south bay, Santa Clara County is taking strong action against medical marijuana dispensaries. The board of supervisors voted unanimously to ban the pot clubs in unincorporated parts of the county but say theyll review the issue after they see what happens in san jose. Last month, dozens of dispensaries were told they needed to shut down after San Jose City leaders approved new regulations. Children who cross the border from central and south america may soon have a temporary home here in the bay area. Santa clara county board of supervisors approved a proposal that would consider the cost of bringing those immigrant children to live with local host families. Do you recognize the man in this sketch . San lee andro police say hes a Sexual Assault suspect. It happened saturday afternoon at the Lakeside Village apartment complex on waterfall way. The victim was playing at the pool and was assaulted when she used a nearby restroom. San Leandro Police pushed for the publics help to find the suspect. We know theres somebody out there who will recognize this person, and we know that from past experience in working with Police Sketch artists, they are very accurate in the composite sketch as to how realistic it is for the person that were looking for. Heres another look at the suspect sketched. Detectives say hes around 19 years old with tattoos on his arms. Vandals in west oakland have left a Community Farm trashed and the neighbors fuming. The vandals struck the City Slickers Community Market farm over the weekend. The farm may be damaged, but supporters say it cant be uprooted. Jodi hernandez has the story. Reporter folks who live in this west oakland neighborhood are devastated by what happened here at their community garden. Now most of the damage has already been cleaned up, but you can see here some of the broken trellises that is vandals left behind. If we walk over this way, you can see many of the plants that were pulled out of their planter boxes have been replanted, but they are looking pretty wilted, likely they will not make it and they are not the only ones feeling trampled on. One of those i dont believe my eyes kind of moments. Reporter thats how joseph david said he felt when he arrived to the City Slickers Community Market farm on saturday morning to find vandals had tried to destroy it. My first thought was that a hurricane had just hit this site. You had seen it, all the fence flats were knocked out, things were thrown part of our gate was pulled off. Reporter plants had been yanked out of the ground, the chicken coop broken into, destructive. We are about getting access to healthy, fresh food and a place that doesnt have a lot of access. I think its a shame. Reporter stephanie says without it, her family would be eating canned goods instead. Everybody come and buy their vegetables, everybody. Every saturday he sells vegetables. Reporter neighbors have pitched in to help clean up the damage, but so far no leads on the vandals. To me its like stealing from the neighborhood, from the community. State lawmakers listened to testimony about construction of the eastern span of the bay bridge after a Senate Report back in january revealed a coverup of construction problems on the bridge, reportedly. The report alleged that Quality Control engineers found thousands of cracks in welds. Instead of ordering the needed repairs, according to the report, caltrans manager es replaced and placed gag orders. Im anxious and eager to see what findings and recommendations they come out with after that investigation and were committed to reacting appropriately to any information that they bring to light. State senator from concord has already called for a criminal investigation. A deadly headon collision caused by a truck of a major shipping company, but the company isnt responsible. This is a big part of fedexs business, were talking about thirdParty Contractors whose sole job is to transport fedex goods on fedex routes. Thats what onethird Party Contractor for fedex was doing when he slammed into don taylors parents car at 70 miles an hour. It happened along interstate 5 near davis. The driver was sentenced to jail, but fedex was not held responsible. The company said the driver was a third Party Contractor and those vendors are responsible for any claims related to their operations. Not fedex. His route is only a fedex route. He does not do anything outside of federal express, therefore, they have and should have immediate control. I know, this area of low pressure that pushed in all the way from southern california, also humid outside and just in case you missed it earlier in the show, we did want to give you a look rather at some of our top august rainfall totals. Now this is really phenomenal, not only because we are in a drought, but because of august we typically dont average over. 05 of an inch of rainfall. Trying to get the words out, not used to talking about rain. Martinez the top total. Concord, pittsburg, petalu petaluma. 04, and pinole picking up. 02, as well. Many cities across the bay area today and within the past 24 hours had more rainfall than we had for the entire month of january. That really, again, is how phenomenal this is. Take a look at the Doppler Radar right now, few areas of rain continuing across santa rosa for about the next two to three hours from santa rosa to petaluma and its pushing off towards the west, towards bodega bay and eventually we may get showers into San Francisco. Now the other thing besides the rainfall, of course, has been the temperatures that have been in the 60s and also the 70s. I know youre feeling it in the south bay. When i got out of the car today, certainly felt the humidity, dew points are up, its feeling the most humid in the south bay and you can see a lot of overcast for tonight. Lets go ahead and take you into the forecast. I wanted to spend time on what we expect to happen throughout tonight and also for tomorrow. Were going to get you into the future cast first and what you want to notice is the fact well stay clouded in for the evening, but were going to start to see a little bit of green popping up through the late overnight hours and the morning. Slight chance of possibly some more showers throughout about 9 00 a. M. Then as we continue throughout wednesday afternoon, heres the thing, the storm system begins to clear out, we get sunnier skies across the bay and our chances of showers do end. I want to recap that again for you, the overall projection of the storm system and whats going to be happening. Highest chance of rainfall for tonight remains across the north and east bay hills. The timing on the activity, again, begins to end throughout wednesday in the noon hour, and really the largest benefit of all of this, its doing nothing to solve our drought, is the fact our fire danger is going down slightly, so theres good news for us. Lets take you into the microclimate forecast as we head throughout our wednesday. Midweek forecast, mix of sun and clouds for san jose, 84 degrees tomorrow, hotter in morganhill and 87 for the peninsula, 66 in pacifica, 83 in palo alto and 60s across San Francisco. Lets take you to the north bay, east bay, trivalley and youll see rain chances ending here in napa for the east bay, walnut creek and trivalley, 90 degrees expected in livermore. It ended up being towed half an hour later. An intense search for a bay area man missing in a Northern California forest. Steven morris was camping with friends over the weekend. The sheriff says he left for a day hike on saturday with another man, but they got separated. Morris has a small amount of water and some power bars, but is not prepared to be out at night when temperatures can drop to 20 degrees. Two courts in Santa Clara County are closing down. The civil small claims and Traffic Court in morgan hill and palo alto will close on october 6th and stay closed until further notice. The courts will close because of funding for the judicial branch, which has been significantly reduced. Cases heard in those courts will move to the ones in san jose and santa clara. A day at the museum, but not just any museum, this is filled with scarlet red and gold memories. Today, nbc bay area got a sneak peek of the 20,000squarefoot facility inside levi stadium. The museum is home to many unique galleries and interactive exhibits. It also includes a theater that features films telling the story of the teams long history. It will be open to fans of all ages. We sat down with content providers, architects, and started to create something that would embody the whole history, the pageantry, the good, the bad, the success of the 49ers.
