Building. We actually just had to move back, firefighters just asked us to move back to make room for an engine coming through. Now, this fivealarm fire started at about 3 00 this afternoon, it grew from there. Mutual aid needed to be called in almost immediately. There is very heavy smoke making it very hard to breathe and there are ashes falling. Neighbors are concerned the wind might spark other fires. We are told there are a lot of abandoned homes in the area. Firefighters say they are watching, should any embers spark other fires, they are prepared to deal with that. There are dozens out here watching this fire. Firefighters keep asking as i mentioned people to move back. They just asked us to move back to allow for a truck to come through here. The winds continue to shift so i cannot emphasize enough the need to stay inside your home if you have asthma or any breathing problems or young children. Make sure those windows are shut. The old kntv building was an old bakery converted into Television Studios in the 50s. By kntv. Wa i know is firefighters had used that facility after the building was sold to the city of san jose. Firefighters used this facility as a Training Exercise place where they would bring in firefighters, they partitioned off the building into several different rooms and made a reallife scenarios for firefighters to train in there. It was sold to the city, this is where the city wants to build that as ballpark. The building stands along the proposed first baseline, if you will, of that proposed new ballpark. What im hearing from sources on the scene is that transients had lived inside that building or had taken it over for some time and they ran a generator there. They all pitched in about a dollar a day and bought the fuel for the generator. They were able to use that to heat lamps and lights and whatnot. So some of the officers out here say theyre actually glad that the building is no longer there because it was creating a lot of problems for them. They are hopeful, however that no one was inside at the time that the flames erupted there at 645 park avenue. Old memories, a building that had been converted into the kntv studios. We havent been there for eight or nine years butstill nostalgia being out here. I looked back on it, november 2004 that we moved out of there. There are also other reports going on. Theres a report out of l. A. X. That Police Arrested 49ers linebacker aldon smith. Cell phone video posted online appears to show Police Taking smith into custody about three hours ago. Monty francis has been following developments. He joins us from San Francisco with the latest on that story. Reporter good evening. Police at l. A. X. Have released a statement confirming they arrested a 25yearold san jose man. They did not identify him as aldon smith. In fact, aldon smith is 24 and will be 25 in september. But eyewitnesses to the arrest have posted video online that appears to show Police Taking smith into custody. The statement from police says about 2 00 p. M. Today, a 25yearold man from san jose was randomly selected for a Second Security screening at checkpoint in terminal 1 at l. A. X. Police say the man became belligerent and indicated he was in possession of a bomb, according to police. That man who witnesses identify as aldon smith then proceeded toward the gate to board his flight and Police Officers arrested the man at the gate. On one of the videos you can hear the man say ive done nothing wrong. Aldon smith has been arrested twice for dui and is facing weapons charges in connection to a house party at which he was stabbed in 2012. The 49ers general manager released a statement that reads we are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving aldon smith as this is a pending legal matter we are still gathering the pertinent facts and we will have no further comment. L. A. X. Police say the suspect is in the process of booking. At the end of the process they will be able to identify him. We will keep you posted as we learn more. In the midwest, a gunman opened fire on a Jewish Community center retirement home this afternoon, killing three people. It happened in overland park, about ten miles south of kansas city. Our sister station in kansas city, kshb, has the latest on what happened. Theres a guy with a rifle here shooting at people. I would leave. Is he still here . I dont know. Reporter panic and fear rip through the parking lot of the Jewish Community center this afternoon at 115th and knoll. Three are dead and a 14yearold boy in Critical Condition after Police Confirmed to 41 action news a gunman opened fire in two different locations. Just after 1 00, a man with a rifle shot at people in the parking lot, forcing the center into a lockdown. Dozens of people, including teens and children, scrambled to safety. Moments later, gunfire was also reported at villa shalom a few blocks away at 123rd and knolls, an assisted living facility. We were walking back to the parking lot and then we were just rushed in the theater. We thought it was weather at first. People ducking down under tables and yelling at us to get inside the theater. That was lisa benson reporting. Overland park police say they have a suspect in custody, a white male in his 70s. Police say they say its too early at this point to tell if the shooting was a hate crime. It comes a day before the start of the jewish festival of passover. Next at 5 00, were going to have more information on that fire that is burning near downtown san jose in the old kntv studios, as well as weather. Reporter the majority of the fire seems to be out. I do not see the flames inside of the building like i was seeing it ten minutes ago when san jose firefighters arrived at this building which was the old kntv building. It was fully engulfed. This is a building firefighters say they have a history with. Since it became vacant, transients have moved in. When they got here, firefighters, around 3 00 this afternoon, they went in to check for anyone inside but flames quickly grew and they had to move back. Firefighters say they had to switch to defensive mode. There are at least two ladder trucks out here along with a truck with a deck gun shooting 1,000 gallons of water a minute. All of those are still going right now. Theres very heavy smoke, making it hard to breathe. There are a lot of ashes falling in the area. This is very close to downtown san jose, to the shark tank and the san jose Fire Training facility. Neighbors are concerned this wind might spark other fires. This is from our helicopter, the view from our helicopter. You can see all the ladder trucks working on this fire. And as kimberly pointed out, she did say it appears that most of the flames are out in that building. 645 park avenue, the old studios of kntv. Many of us worked there for many, many years. But despite the fact that the flames may be out at this point, you can tell you can see there are plenty of hot spots on that building where smoke is coming up, still plenty of places in that building that are still very hot and creating smoke there. So that is the fire at 645 park avenue at the old kntv studios. We of course are going to be updating this throughout this newscast. Right now were going to change gears and bring you other news. News from daly city, two people recovering from gunshot wounds. The shooting happened at a home on skyline drive around 6 00 did this morning. Authorities have not released the identity of the injured man or woman. Crews rushed them to the hospital. One of them suffered lifethreatening injuries. No word on suspect or motive for that shooting. Nbc bay area news followup, last nights massive fire in West Berkeley destroyed several businesses, knocked out power to a neighborhood, and even caused some traffic problems on i80. Today, firefighters put out hot spots there and made sure that building was safe for investigators to enter. The fire started around 8 00 last night and it wasnt under control until 1 00 this morning. One reason it took so long, right there, because live power lines went down as well. One man who saw firefighters arrive described the flames as impressive. At first it was only about four feet of fire licking out of the top of the building. Then by the time i left 20 minutes later, it was probably 50 foot round flames coming out of the top of the building. The fire ladder that had pulled up to the building, the ladder extended, they had gotten the water on. There was a fireman right on the top blasting it. Four businesses were destroyed causing up to 8 million in damage. But no one was hurt. One of those businesses destroyed is a very popular business called the wooden duck store selling handmade wooden furniture. Fire investigators are expected back on the scene tomorrow piecing together how that fire started. It is a sign of the times. Californias drought is having a major impact on help help chee, the reservoir near yosemite which provides water to the bay area. On your left you can see what normal water levels would look like. On the right you can see the current water levels. What it means to the bay area. Reporter high in the mountains of yosemite is the source of Drinking Water for 2. 6 Million People across the bay area. The Oshaughnessy Dam is gate keeper for the hetchetchee water system flowing to San Francisco. This reservoir holds 117 billion gallons. It serves 85 of our water supply. Reporter the dam may hold that much water but following a mostly dry winter, its holding far less. You can almost see what we call a bathtub ring. Sort of a lighter color of rock. The reservoir would fill all the way up to that level. So where we are, we would be under water. Reporter the drought has left the reservoir half full for the first time in decades old stone benches, a rock bridge, the original 1923 top are above water. Normally you wouldnt see that. It would be under water at this time. Reporter ellen levin of San Franciscos Public Utilities Commission Says the winter snow isnt offering much hope. I think whats even worse is the fact that our snowpack is only at 35 . Usually in a normal year, we would be able to fill the reservoir three times over with the amount of snow melt. Reporter it doesnt just provide water. It also creates energy. The system includes three hydro electric plants producing electricity that powers everything from city buses to San Francisco general hospital. When were in drought, less water is transported from upcountry down to San Francisco so we generate less electricity. Reporter the city sells its excess electricity on the open markets to support some city services. Less water means less revenue. Worst Case Scenarios would have us looking at raising rates. Worst Case Scenarios would have us looking at laying off staff. Are we doing those things now . No. Reporter hydro electric power stations across california are facing the same trouble. Raying the possibility of increased electricity rates statewide. San francisco utility officials are urging customers to voluntarily cut backwater usage 10 . While they expect to make it through this year okay, they say another dry year could leave the city and its customers in a lot of hot water. Right now were going to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda here with our microclimate forecast as well as that fire in san jose. As winds are increasing around san jose, whats left of the smoke, the volume has decreased. What remains is still hugging very close to ground level. Northwest winds at 12 Miles Per Hour. As we show you the area being impacted, heres the short take off to the north, downtown to the right. 645 park avenue, our former home, kntv studios. The smoke being pushed south. As we take you live from our chopper perspective, the Water Cannons aiming down on whats left of the rooftop and the smoke being pushed off toward the right. As the fire took off that column shot straight up into the sky. The winds have picked up now from the west and northwest, pushing remaining smoke due south. You can see how those Water Cannons are being applied to whats left of the fire there in park avenue. If you have respiratory issues or asthma downwind of this fire, the winds will be increasing. Youre going to want to shut windows and doors and shelter in place as that smoke, whats left of it, it is still pretty close to ground level as winds have been gusty at times. Looking at wind speeds currently, northwest at 12 around san jose. Looks like the wind speeds at least briefly for the next hour will increase slightly more as you can see from 10 to 12 Miles Per Hour. Tonight we may see gusts up to 20 Miles Per Hour between now and 7 00. Later on tonight well see the wind speeds back off. If the winds go light, tomorrow morning some of that smoke could pool around parts of san jose. As you wake up you may notice heavy smoke in the air as winds mix and the sun comes up again. Well see air quality improving around san jose shortly after 9 00 tomorrow morning. Mostly sunny skies, High Pressure built in. Were going to see patches of low clouds heading towards tomorrow morning, mainly toward the coast. A few spots around the trivalley and the dubly grade. Tomorrow the warmest day to start the work week. High pressure keeping us warm for another day. Its going to give ground and allow a trough of low pressure to bring some rain did our north. Bay area tuesday and wednesday, you see it in the sevenday forecast, well be cooling down. Just as soon as the next weekend arrives, temperatures will be warming back up. Tomorrow, again, air quality issues could linger into tomorrow morning around san jose until the sun rises and provides mixing in the atmosphere. 78 for tomorrow afternoon. 81 in saratoga. Mid 70s around the peninsula before the sea breeze kicks in. San francisco close to 70 perhaps as early as noon tomorrow. The sea breeze is going to turn on faster and stronger for the afternoon bringing in low clouds. North bay will see highs near 80 in napa and santa rosa as winds change direction, switching back to a sea breeze out of the south. Youll get cooling for your tuesday. East bay temperatures near oakland at 72. Trivalley locations seeing highs in the low 80s for tomorrow. The trend were going to see will be a big drop in temperatures, at least 5 to 10 degrees as we go monday into tuesday, south bay en, peninsula, San Francisco. Biggest drop, trivalley, more than a 10degree drop in temperatures into tuesday. Twoday cool down and those temperatures rebound again as we head towards thursday and friday. And then on the left, that is what the fire looks like right now with just a tiny wispy white smoke coming out of that building. Again, it is burning at 645 park avenue. Since then it has been abandoned for most of the time, although the Fire Department did use it occasionally for some fire drills. Their Fire Training facility is across the street. So that is the latest update from the fire in downtown san jose. We want to go back to breaking news of the building fire in san jose. Nbc bay areas Kimberly Terry live on the scene. One last look for thus hour. Whats up, kimberly . Reporter when we got here you saw a thick plume of black smoke coming up from this building. As you can see now it looks like most of that smoke has dissipated. It was going straight up, now its closer to the ground as the wind shifts. It took fire crews about an hour and a half to get the upper hand on this fire which started about 3 00. It seems to be put out for the most part. I do not see any flames from my Vantage Point and have not seen any for about a half hour now. But there is still a lot of heat being generated from this fire and ashes continue to fall. As you can hear in my voice, making it difficult to breathe at times. Despite that, dozens are still out here watching whats going on there, using their cell phones to take pictures and record video. When san jose firefighters arrived at the building at about 3 00, it was fully engulfed. Firefighters say they went in immediately to check for anyone who could be inside the building. But the flames quickly grew and they had to move back into a defensive mode. This is a place firefighters say they have a history with since it became vacant. Neighbors say transients have moved in.
