An area of High Pressure over the bay area. That creates a lid. When you get spare the air warnings, you have to have High Pressure aloft and you also have to have calm winds at the valley floor. Thats what were looking at. And a lot of that calming of the wind allows for the pollution to get trapped. Because of that were talking about another spare the air alert for tomorrow. Categories in the unhealthy levels. Heres the other thing you have to have for a red flag warning, strong winds. They kind of counterbalance themselves. We had a cold front come through yesterday that stirred up the atmosphere. Now we have that cold air trying to get up under the warm air and gusty hills above 1,000 feet. Through tomorrow, 1 00, the hills above 1,000 feet, thats where we see the worst fire danger. Not only across the north bay hills but the east bay hills all the way down towards silicon valley. This is something well pay close attention to. And this evening weve seen hills get gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Overall thats what well be watching. Well have more in a little bit. Longterm federal Unemployment Insurance expired today for more than 1 million americans. California is home to more than 200,000 of those affected. People looking for work for more than 26 weeks. The States Department is closed this weekend for the holiday. Earlier this week the state agency sent out notices to people in california who depend on those benefits that the benefits would end today. Democrats in Congress Promise to bring up the issue when they get back to work in january trying to reinstate those benefits. But until then the longterm unemployed will be starting this new year not knowing what to expect. Brian moore has the latest. Reporter dale sexton is out of work, out of luck and out of time. Never thought id be unemployed for over six months. Reporter employed for the past three dozen years sexton has been out of a job since june. Now hes more than 1 million americans who have lost their longterm federal Unemployment Insurance and they wont get it back until congress acts. While some consider it a lifeline, republicans question whether extending Unemployment Benefits beyond 26 weeks is a good investment. Its not that i think they become bad people by being unemployed longer, the longer they are the less likely they are to ever get a job again. Reporter democrats disagree. It provides help for those who desperately need it to keep their families afloat. Reporter Senate Majority leader harry reid says the vote is on top his todo list when Congress Comes back. But even if the bill passes, the house may not go along. It could be the first big test of the bipartisan spirit that ended this legislative year on a positive note. Bryan mohr, nbc news, washington. Police are investigating a deadly shooting at a Birthday Party in oakland last night. Police say it happened on 96 avenue near bancroft at about 11 00. When they arrived they found the 43yearold man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and died. Police have not released a description of the gunman or the motive. This is oaklands 88th homicide this year, well below last years number of 131. San jose officers are searching for the person who smashed a front door window at a chase bank. This happened before 8 00 a. M. At the santa clara street location. An officer at the scene told nbc bay area news that it looks like nothing was stolen from inside. Not clear if this was an attempted robbery or an act of vandalism. Police in fremont say that cars took over the lot for street races and side shows. Officers say the issue has been going on for two weeks now. Theyre beefing up their presence on the weekends and nights when it tends to happen. Its not clear if any citations were issued or any arrests made. Newark police say they caught the thieves who stole christmas from a family we introduced you to on thursday. This mother and her two children were left with a very bare christmas after burglars broke in and cleared out their gifts. On thursday the Police Department teamed up with Alameda County firefighters to collect donated gifts. Yesterday they arrested four adults and two juveniles responsible for three burglaries on Christmas Eve including the burglary of the torres family. While fers werent able to tind the gifts they were able to return the stolen property to another family. Two guns and narcotics were also found in that raid. The family of the braindead 13yearold girl who remains on a ventilator at Childrens Hospital is trying to raise money to pay for the cost to transfer her to an out of state hospital. Kimberly tere has the latest for us. Reporter jahi mcmaths stepfather says the family is working against the clock to keep jahi on that ventilator and to get her moved to another facility. A judge has ruled the hospital can remove jahi from the ventilator at 5 00 p. M. On monday. A spokesperson for Childrens Hospital says that is what will happen unless the court orders them otherwise. The familys Attorney Says he will ask the court on monday for an extension and in the meantime, the family says its keeping the faith. Outside the hospital today, a handful of people came from all over the bay area to pray with jahis family. Feeling a lot of pressure, feeling a lot of pressure, but you know optimistic in my faith that gods going to make another way for us. Omari, hes having a lot of sleepless nights, him and our lawyer chris dolan, trying to make things happen. Im very optimistic that something will come through. The family is now seeking help to get the money needed to transfer jahi. Her mother created the jahi mcmath fund on the Popular Crowd funding site go fund me. The goal is to raise 20,000 and since last night about 3500 has been donated on the site. One writes, im raising money for my daughter jahi mcmath so he she can be airlifted to a hospital out of state. Her insurance does not cover it and Childrens Hospital is going to remove her off life support if i cant get her out of this hospital, unquote. The notion of an out of State Facility varies from what the attorney said yesterday. He said the family was looking into a facility in Southern California after the one they were in contact with in the greater bay area pulled out. The attorney said he put a facility in contact with the hospital today to discuss transfer needs. A hospital spokesperson about an hour ago says they called that facility, which is located in Southern California and have yet to hear back from its medical director. Live in oakland, kimberly tere. Starting january 1st, their organization will accept openly gay youth. Under the new membership policy boys can no longer be barred from the programs solely on the basis of sexual orientation. The new policy was approved in may. The boy scouts of america will continue, though, to exclude openly gay adults from leadership positions. Were calling this an out of this world selfie thats now going viral. Nasa astronaut mike hopkins snapped this photo of himself in the middle of a space walk on Christmas Eve, then he tweeted the photo with the caption wish i could find the words to describe the experience. It will expire at 10 00. But heres the thing with this being one of the driest years on calendar. Were looking at the potential for fire to actually break out. And if that does, we can be talking about more red flag fire warnings in 2014 and also we have to continue to spare the air each day. The red flag warning does go for the hills above 1,000 feet and includes the east bay as well, mount diablo range and the san jose foothills. Well watch this through the next 12 to 18 hours. Right now a beautiful sunset across the bay area. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s for the most part. That spectacular day we had across the bay area. We had a cold front come through yesterday. That kind of stirred up the atmosphere just a bit. Well, what that is allowing for to happen is the gusts. Were talking about the gusts up to 35 miles per hour. So High Pressure will remain in control for the next few days. Sosinking air that will allow the wins to calm. Were not going to be looking at a whole lot of air movement. The potential for sparing the air could continue through this upcoming week. For tomorrow, temperatures a little warmer than they were today. Mid60s in san jose. Back to the mid to upper 60s. A little bit cooler in San Francisco. Up towards the north bay, thats where we see temperatures just a few degrees shy. A Beautiful Day to get out and enjoy, even east bay and trivalley, a mix to mid to upper 60s. The air quality will improve but not until monday. Youll notice that on shore flow does kick back in as we head to monday. If you are making plans for new years eve and perhaps new years day, the computer planner showing good weather. That will at least help in allowing for this air quality that has been so terrible to begin to improve. For tomorrow, another spare the air alert in effect. Heres what were looking for, the light at the end of the tunnel. Tuesday an wednesday air quality levels are expected to improve.
