Well have more looks at viewer videos in a moment. The biggest problem was in the sierra where i80 was closed for hours from col fax to the state line. California Highway Patrol sending these photos to show the condition. Lets check with meteorologist rob mayeda tracking the latest on this storm. A real winter blast around the bay area. The picture were seeing from walnut creek to mt. Diablo encapsulates everything weve seen of our weather today. Sun, a little bit of rain and hail and snow showers there on the flank of mt. Diablo at this hour. San jose, too, youre seeing snow and rain mixed. Out towards mt. Hamilton, the radar views, we zoom you in west of highway 17. Right there skyline boulevard areas west of los altos did have some snow and still a few snow showers there close to 2,000 feet. Theres our radar view showing up there in white, sleet or wet snow flakes showing up in pink. Its been a while since weve seen these multiple colors on the radar. There you see mt. Diablo looking at snow showers. Seeing a break in most of the action but this is the pattern responsible. Cold air dropping down out of canada. Dropping our snow levels tonight. Underneath some of the heavier showers, a chance of snow levels dropping even more tonight and sleet possible with rain possibly down even to near san jose tonight as the temperatures drop into the 30s and 40s. A closer look at what you can expect for tomorrow mornings commute coming up in 15 minutes. Lets take a live look at conditions on i80 in the sierra. This is soda springs. You can see covered in snow. No cars on that road. Although i80 is open. Caltrans says nearly 70 miles, 70 miles of the interstate closed today because of the storm. A lot of people traveling from the bay area to the sierra for weekend getaways. This is, as you can imagine, not good news. Highway 50 currently has no closures. Our newsroom was flooded with videos from viewers showing the hail and weather in their neighborhood. This is from Colleen Campbell showing us the hail just pelting the cars here. This is in danville. Now, take a look at the scene here in san mateo. This is from viewer chris miguel capturing peasized hail here falling on the ground. And you can hear it. We are learning new details about a fiery scene this morning in the north bay. Flames engulfing a motel, destroying more than a dozen units. It happened at the travel inn motel in vallejo just off interstate 80. Laura malpert is on the scene where dozens are out of a home tonight. Reporter the fire started at 9 30 this morning and consumed an entire wing of the hotel. You can see the area is blocked off by crime tape. Construction crews just boarded up a window behind me. And you can see they are still here at the scene. It was so scary. Stuff was popping. Reporter a large ball of fire consumes the travel inn Residency Hotel in vallejo sending dark smoke billowing into the air. Its the place tanner burnhart and his mom tina wilson have called home for several months. I just woke up and my son said that the building was on fire. We ran and tried to get as many people out as we could and knocked on doors. Reporter the fire destroyed 16 units and displaced up to 40 people. I didnt see any actual flames yet. So we went in and tried to get as much clothes and belongings as we could to get out. But our third trip in, the back porch was on fire. It was not worth it. Reporter firefighters say everyone made it out of the hotel but three people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Firefighters resk youd at least one cat, they say several cats and dogs are still missing. It was quite shocking. Im sure later its going to hit me a little bit more when, you know, im laying in a bed trying to figure out what happened. It was a big fire. It was one of the bigger fires weve had in a while, definitely. Reporter red cross volunteers the on hand offered evacuees assistance. Brown says the Hotel Manager offered her another room for now and says Everything Else will work its way out. Just trying to make it through this, you know. I dont know where were going to get blankets, clothes, things like that. But well figure it out. I got the family, i got the dogs. Thats all i can ask for. Reporter police say the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but they are still investigating what started the fire and whether smoke detectors were working. Reporting live from vallejo, laura malpert, nbc bay area news. Now to a chaotic and violent scene in east bay neighborhood last night. Thats where Hayward Police shot a man suspected in a shooting that left two people injured. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith is live at bay area headquarters now and has more details. Reporter peggy, neighbors say they heard two distinct rounds of gunfire. At first they thought it might be the sound of fireworks, but then they say they heard what sounded like a car losing control on the 27000 block of mandarin avenue last night around 11 30. Thats when Hayward Police say they started receiving nine oeis that a person shot a man in front of the home. The suspect pointed a gun at one of their officers and the officer fired hitting that suspect several time. The neighbors say theyre trying to figure out the timeline because it sounded like the car circled back through the neighborhood and lost control after they heard the first shot. He came back again flu the street, and thats when i guess he crashed into a few cars and he came out of the car and then he started shooting and thats when the police started shooting back. The neighbors say the female victim was treated and released from the hospital. Both the male suspect and the other victim, were told, are hospitalized, listed in stable condition. The officers were not injured in all this. What led to this, a motive is still unclear. Were hoping to get an update from alamedas District Attorneys Office and members of the Police Department are investigating. Reporting live in hayward, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. A high speed chase in east bay early this morning ended in this crash and an arrest. It all started when a Police Officer in lafayette tried to stop the driver of this car on eastbound 24. The driver sped away leading officers on a pursuit that hit speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. Eve eventwally the driver crashed into another car. That passenger had to be cut out of the car by firefighters. That car is stolen. New video tonight of President Trump touching down in washington, d. C. , about 1 1 2 hours ago. The president returning to the capital after another tumultuous weekend including allegations that former president obama had a wiretap inside trump tower. We have a heartwarming update on a cruel case of a puppy found near death in a dumpster in the Central Valley last month. Meet ivy. This is what she looks like today. Shes just as cute as can be. About a week ago, though, she was pulled out of a bakersfield area dumpster after someone threw the gravely injured dog in the trash. Cell phone video showed the dogs injuries and that video went viral people were so upset about it. Shes being fostered by a family in los altos from an Organization Called pound puppy rescue. While shes being fostered, shell be socialized with little kids, other dogs. By the time shell be ready for adoption shell be well adjusted and ready to fit into family life. Everybody who did see it had it come down pretty hard at times. For the morning peasized hail and a lot of snow at times the, down to as low as 2,000 feet this afternoon west of the los altos hills. Right now san jose breaking out the sunshine, but look at the temperatures. Only 47 degrees, the sunny skies, snow capped mountains off to the east. Palo alto had a pretty good downpour pass by. Also small hail. Well show you how things look on the radar. You can see that tracking off to the south and east. And around highway 17 a little bit of sleet passing by within the last half hour. Actually, that is the radar site of the National Weather Service Looking at snow right at the radar. You see more snow there east of san jose out towards mt. Hamilton and a little mix mt. Diablo where we had snow. You can see it there on the late day sunshine on the side of mt. Diablo. Passing showers and still out towards mt. Tam and the higher hills of the north bay as low as 2,000 feet today. Good chance youll see a mix of wet snow flakes along with the scattered showers. As the air continues to cool down, you wont see as much moisture. That cold air right out of canada dropping the snow level tonight and temperatures tomorrow morning upper 30s to low 40s and this recipe is ripe for some low snow levels dropping into tomorrow morning. Some of the heavier showers, too, may briefly try to mix some sleet down closer to even sea level early in the day. Highs tomorrow will be in the mid50s. Another cool day. Not quite as cool as we saw today. Rainfall totals from here on out not a big story. Most places picking up less than a tenth of an inch of rain. Out around the north bay and especially east of san jose were likely going to see another 2 to 4 inches of snow, not rain, snow atop mt. Hamilton as we head into tomorrow morning. Hour by hour for the morning forecast, you can see these Little Pockets of downpours. This can include small hail or sleet at times for the morning commute. 6 30 in the morning you can see the scattered showers. Though the transition will be from drier weather once we move into tomorrow night and tuesday you begin to see the clearing as the storm track begins to lift to the north. Thats a big change were going to start to see as High Pressure builds. Storm track moves off to the north. No longer talking about chilly temperatures and talking about wednesday and thursday, numbers in the 60s and 70s, now maybe a few showers trying to drop in by friday. Winterlike conditions will last for another day and things will change around. Middle part of the week you see the temperatures beginning to climb on up going from the 40s and 50s for highs today. 60s by tuesday and wednesday, then 70s by thursday. A few showers friday and next weekend. Stay tuned. Not a washout. Scattered showers to deal with by the end of the week, but once we get past middle part of the week will feel a lot more like spring despite the snowcapped hills. I know, so unbelievable. Right now sunny skies an the snow on the higher hills east of san jose right now. There you see rain northwest of downtown. That will clip milpitas. Look whats happening down to the south, around the National Service weather and mt. Hamilton to the east, yes, the snow starting to add up, scattered showers in San Francisco. Heres the pattern thats fueling these low snow levels and hail producing storms. Cold air driving down out of canada dropping right on top of the bay area. So tonight snow levels at times with these heavier showers below 3,000 feet. We could at times see a mix of wet snowflakes or sleet even below those hilltop levels tonight as our temperatures tomorrow morning starting the day in the 30s and 40s, which means a lot of snowcapped higher hilltops.
