Gfx scott boxes we have Team Coverage of this devastating flooding. As we mentioned nbc bay areas krischez is the. She just talked to people who tried to stay in their homes to ride out the storm. So is bob redell, whos been talking to people who fled thier homes evacuating their homes overnight and this morning. But lets begin with meteorologist kari hall kari anim kari chroma wx at ck laura boxes gets back out to the scene of that massive flooding south but we may still have some waves of rain moving in. We just had crazy amounts of rain over the past several days. And as you see in morgan hill, weve had 5 1 2 inches of rain and it may have been even higher over the Santa Cruz Mountains we had 8 to 15 inches. And even spots like san rafael measuring a lot of rain, the amount that we should have for the whole month of january we had over a short period of time. And now once again, a few more breaks in those clouds, a chance to dry out, and a little bit of sunshine so that may help aid in that situation as we continue to monitor what is going on there. Only some spotty rain lingering as we go into the late morning and early afternoon. There will be another round of rain moving in. And as we get a closer look of that area, gilroy and also to the south near hollister, we are not seeing any rain at this point. But once again it will be possible as we go through the day and we continue on with our clean up efforts. Well talk more about this and a look ahead in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Thank you very much, kari. Lets get back out to the scene of the massive flooding were talking about south of gilroy this morning. Nbc bay areas Chris Sanchez is there. This is really an overwhelming scene, chris. Reporter it really is, and its kind of a bizarre scene, too, laura. We were blinded by the sunlight and there is a rainbow overhead this whole disaster zone as the search and rescue crews are fueling up and getting back on the roadway. Here to my left here is a drone that the San Benito County sheriffs deptd has been flying overhead to assess the damage. Though it looks like its getting back to normal here, those flood waters extend beyond this huhher and almost all the way to the mountains where the p Pacheco Creek reached its banks. You might not be surprised rescuers had to use a swift water boat so reach these homes. 59 people evacuated of their own accord. 45 people were rescued by the Fire Department swift water rescue crew or san benito sheriff responders. They walked several large animals out to safety n. All 50 homes were impacted. We talked with a woman whose nephew woke her up when the creek breached its banks. She thought there was a problem with the roofer. I thought it was just dripping from the top, that maybe he got a leak on the roof or whatever. So, i went down there, rushed down because i sleep upstairs, and i just kind of rushed down and all of a sudden i was ankle deep in water. Reporter now, she and her sister in her 90s and another sister in her 80s thought they were safe in the flood zone. They were in the second floor of their home. The Fire Department decided that would be okay as well. The creek reached its flood stage this morning, two hours before it was supposed to. We did ask folks around here the last time they remembered anything like this and the consensus was during the last he will nene yo event 20 years ago, that is when it breached its banks. It is rather dry right now and they definitely need the break around here. We had the resident just to my right, he is scraping things out of his house. You can see the water lineup very high. Rescuers toe rescuers told us two of the people they had to rescue was plucked from the top of a car because the flood waters were 4 feet deep when they arrived at 2 00 this morning. My colleague damian is also here. Hes going to be picking up our report from lovers lane in hollister for our 5 00 and 6 00 newscast. For now nbc bay area news. The glorious rainbow behind chris. People rescuing their horses, their cows, other animals, been playing out all morning. It appears most of these people were entirely caught off guard when this flood started. Nbc bay areas bob redel is also near the flood waters. Bob, we heard from people out there. How are they holding up . Reporter well, certainly glad to be out of the flood zone, scott. And this area right here at shore road, this isnt even the worst of it. This is a couple miles away from the areas people had to be evacuated or rescued. People are concerned about their homes and property they had to leave behind. This is a look overnight at the rescue operation. The local san jose Fire Department i believe it was invite aid camera on board their rescue truck as they drove through the flood areas. You can see how deep the water was. It was about knee high, sometimes a little deeper. But the flooding was over a vast area like a lake. It made it difficult for people to navigate and escape on their own, hence the need for the fire fighter rescue. We heard from one woman who tells us her mother woke them up around 2 00 this morning to alert her that the water was getting very close to flooding their home. They came onto our house and they were like, do you guys want to be evacuated since it was a little deep. We kotb go outside walking. We had to get rescuers, some other way by boat. Do you want to get out . Were like, no, we want to stay in our house. Less than two minutes they came back saying, the emergency called and said its mandatory now that you have to be evacuated. A little sad, but theyre up, the kids are playing. We gave kids toys and we give them red cross toys. The thing is theyre worried about whats coming next and when, if they can get back in their homes. Reporter thats the red cross which has set up a temporary Assistance Center in downtown hollister at the veterans building. Its not clear how many people have taken advantage of their services. Back out here live where you can see were just offshore road where the water is now dumping off that faster to places unknown, perhaps a canal thats not far from here. Again, this is not the area that was evacuated. That area apparently much more severe than what were seeing right here, but its dry through hollister and San Benito County. You are seeing spots of flooding throughout the area. Reporting live in San Benito County, bob, nbc bay area news. Bob, thank you. Weve been showing you aerial shots our chopper caught in a lot of sights. Three cows surrounded by water. More pictures on nbc bay area. Com. You can find raw helicopter video there as well. The storm fall out is far and wide. Right now the city of benicia is under emergency. Saturated ground and high tides hit just after midnight. It was too much for the city on the bay. A lot of flooding and road closures. The storm drainage system is overtaxed. Crews closed ten roads and parts of busy east Second Street and industrial way. In the east bay, highway 84 is still closed between sun ol and fremont because of mudslides. Trains are back on schedule. Theyre hoping to reopen 84 around noon. And its been another messy day on the roadways across the bay area. Constant closures, reroutes, delays, frustrating a lot of drivers. Tracking all that for us this morning, mike, what are the trouble spots . Right now the big trouble spot is because of a crash. It doesnt appear to be weather related. Its causing slowing near the coliseum. Two lanes blocked northbound, one remaining car and an ambulance. There may be injuries at the scene. As you look at the map you see clustering on both directions approaching the scene. Spectators right up on the center divide. Thats the active crash going on right now. Weather related we had a number of issues. Most of them are clearing in the north bay. In the south bay we still have highway 17, what we call the south bay, santa cruz still slow. We have Traffic Control because of a downed tree that will continue till possibly 3 00. As you said highway 84 is still closed from the mudslide. Let me show you this, guys. Thats the car that was stuck. It was abandoned there covered in 4 feet of mud. They finally got it pulled from the area. Highway 84 still not open. Back to you. A lot of messes to clean up. Thanks so much. Weve been closely watching the Russian River over the last few days. Right now it is passed the flood level stage and will start to drop, but it doesnt reassure people who are living nearby. Nbc bay areas pete serranos live near the Russian River in guerneville with the latest for us there. Pete . Reporter yeah, good morning to you, laura. And, yes, heres the new number we are getting from officials. Theyre saying that that river is going to crest at about 37. 7 feet around 2 00 p. M. And, of course, people along the Russian River have already been told to evacuate. Well show you guys, weve been showing you this all morning, drake road. The reason were showing you this building as you can see, its submerged in water halfway up to the windows. Yesterday it was basically in the parking lot. The levels are steadily rising from yesterday up until today. And about half an hour ago we were able to get a check over at the ford and command center at the Fire Department. Theyre handling the Emergency Operations for everything around here. Just to get an idea as far as how theyre deploying resources while all this is happening, there are plenty of parts of guerneville flooding. The strategy is theyre putting different crews in different parts of the city. Here is a member of the Sonoma County breaking down the strategy today. They are on stand by. We have boat crews and boat teams that are standing by. We also have again the support of the national guard. In areas that are already closed off, kneely road, drake road and other parts of the west county, weve positioned fire crews on the other side of those affected areas. So, if we have emergency events theyre already there in place standing by. Reporter once again, all hands are on deck as there is continued flooding around guerneville. And as i mentioned, that number is 37. 7 feet. Theyre expecting the Russian River to crest at that point at about 2 00 p. M. , and theyre expecting that to last through the afternoon and into the evening before it goes down sometime tomorrow. Were live in guerneville, pete serranos, nbc bay area news. Can you imagine the clean up there . Thank you very much. Weve been sending out alert during micro climate weather alert with our nbc bay area app. You can download it on your smartphone and youll know when Severe Weather and rain head to your area. Up next at 11 00, Donald Trump Holds his first News Conference since being elected. We will break it down for you. And a rude wake up call for dozens of people near hollister. As those flood waters rush in trapping them inside their homes, this coverage weve had this morning well have the very latest on developments coming up. And Santa Cruz Mountains, its been a big disruption for people driving all over. Back to our breaking news from the flood waters in san back to our breaking news this morning where dozens of people had to be rescued from flood waters in San Benito County, and now the focus remains on all the animals. Our chopper caught this video of horses being led in nearly waist deep water off to trailers. There is a lot of farmland out there. A lot of animals, a lot of equipment, theyre doing what they can to move them to Higher Ground and safety. Just unexpected, they caught us off guard as we saw those pictures how bad it was. But it is drying out. We saw chris with a rainbow over her shoulder. It is good to see things like that. And we know the water levels will be going back down as we go into the rest of this forecast. So, looking now at temperatures that have been in the lower 50s, and once again still some wet roads across parts of the bay area. Getting some sunshine as well as we take a live look outside in the north bay, 51 degrees, and the same in San Francisco with some spotty showers in the east bay. Heres a look at the san mateo bridge. Weve seen some showers moving through parts of the bay area, and we will get a chance once again to dry out. Still looking at some spotty showers in the forecast for also today and the next couple of days. Going to see the rain, though, tapering off. The live look outside san jose, some clouds still lingering overhead and some rain that will be here and there, spotty rain moving now into parts of the hills, and it will be also in the Santa Cruz Mountains. King tides coming up again tomorrow. So until noon tomorrow we will have tides coming up during the late morning hours, up to close to 7 feet. So, some of the usual suspects that flood during king tides, well be keeping an eye on that. The napa river has just been dropped from the flood warning, but we will still be watching the Russian River at guerneville. That is still above flood stage and will be there. So, once again, napa river cresting early this morning and continuing to fall below the flood stage and will stay there. For the Russian River and guerneville, were up to 37. 6 feet, and that will be falling very slowly a we head toward friday morning and into the afternoon and the weekend. We still will have a chance of rain today, so, the big stories that even as we clean up, there still may be some waves of rain moving in. Still some spotty showers, but the potential of some heavier rain later on tonight, here we are 4 00 in the morning, we do have a pretty good coverage of some rain moving through. And you can tell even by the spin of this rain that that will be the back end of this low pressure system that will bring in some winding down rain into the bay area. And then some dryer air moving in just in time for the weekend and we will also need that much needed break. As we look at how much rain we could see with the little left over rain that could be moving through, one model is putting down to a half an inch of rain, possibly three quarters of an inch of rain on an already saturated ground. Looking at the sierra, some spotty light showers moving through, snow showers, once again some of the main thoroughfares are closed and you may not be able to make it there. So, we just want to show you what we have as far as our camera here in heavenly and there is snow right there on the lens. There will be some additional snow in spots like heavenly. Twin bridges, kirk wood, up to 21 inches of snow over the next several days, and the forecast shows that our temperatures will remain steady in the 50s into the weekend, but that sunshine returning, a chance of rain early tomorrow morning and seeing the weather improving and warming up for the inland area for the end of the weekend and the start of next week. Ill have another look at the forecast coming up a little bit later. All right, well look forward to that. Thank you very much, especially the sunshine by the weekend because theres more flooding to tell you about. This time in the south bay near the lexington reservoir which reached capacity yesterday. It is now spilling over into the los gatos creek. The onslaught of rain along with the Flash Flood Warning for parts of los gatos and campbell. Homes and farms underwater in san benito ty we continue to follow that breaking news, homes and farms under water in San Benito County. From the air the view is striking. You can see the farm lands completely covered in water. Taking a look at rescuers and what theyve been up against since overnight, well be joined with a live report from Chris Sanchez coming up. But first we want to check in with kari hall. Whats the situation like right now . We need to dry out. We will be drying out. Laura, weve just had so much rain across the bay area and over a short span. And in spots like morgan hill where you can tell parts of the south county, weve had over 5 inches of rain. And running off from the Santa Cruz Mountains of eight to 15 inches of rain, this is a lot of rain to try to soak into the ground. Once again, in just a few days. Weve also had in spots like san rafael over 11 inches of rain while most of us had anywhere from 2 to 5 inches. So, it was definitely a spot where we had a lot of rain in some areas, but not everywhere. Now, as we take a live look outside of palo alto, we are getting a chance to dry out. We will see this more commonly as we head through the day, but there will still be some rain in the forecast. Some of that moisture starting to approach the bay area with more cloud cover through the afternoon and evening. As we get a closer look at what we are seeing now, some spotty downpours as of our noon hour, well start to see a little bit more of the rain. But here is a look at that area where we had that massive flooding and right now its drying out as they get those efforts underway. They really needed to be. Thank you very much. Nbc bay areas Chris Sanchez live in the flood zone for us this morning. What is the situation out there, chris . People are in decent spirits . Reporter well, yeah, they are. And its the good news here is nobody was hurt in this flooding event. The sun is shining so perhaps some of this water will dry up before the next round of rain. You can see the flood waters are receding here. The fence line you see in the distance where that green tree is, thats where the Pacheco Creek runs through and that is where it breached its banks, flooding at least 50 homes in this little neighborhood here. Its lovers lane in hollister. You showed a a little look at the helicopter video. Lets look at it again from this vantage point. You can see the scope of the flooding and it may not be a surprise rescuers had to use a boat to reach this. In the last hour we learned 59 people evacuated on their own accord. 49 people were rescued by the san jose Fire Department, the swift water rescue crew was assisting out here. San benito Sheriffs Department also manage today get some of those folks out. The sheriffs deputies also walked out several large animals safely as well. And at this point the Animal Services folks say that it seems that all of the animals are accounted for as well. 50 homes were impacted. We did talk with a woman whos nephew woke her up at 2 00 in the morning saying the house was flooded. She immediately thought baecaus of all the rain there was a problem with the roof only often to find out when she went down the stairs there was ankle deep water inside the house. She chose to stay put because she has a sister in her 90s, one in her 80s. They are recovering, scraping out water as well. Two people who had to be rescued were rescued from the top of a car because the waters were 4 feet deep when rescuers got here at 2 00 this morning. They knew the Pacheco Creek was going to breach its banks. They thought it was going to do it later on in the morning. We have a crew with the drone, theyre getting aerials. The chopper is overhead. And my colleague Damian Trujillo is out here as well wrapping this up at 5 00 and 6 00. Were in all the places that you are, twitter, instagram. Chris sanchez, san benito in the bay. Not just rain but big waves are also a major concern this pache san beni well, its not just rain, but big waves also a major concern this morning. This is video sent to us by viewer marco a. Colon. Were expecting to see tides like this for a couple of days. I know several of our viewers have a question, what is a king tide . And we have just the person here who can answer that question. Kari hall joins us for a look at that and Everything Else going on in the weather department. With those king tides you see a high difference from the astronomical tide. Extreme high tide and low tide. Well see a lot of waves coming up. Heres a look at a spot we keep an eye on. Ocean beach when we have king tides, right now its 54 degrees with a live look. We can see weve already made it past where weve had the highest tide and some of the water there starting to reseed. It was right about here on the beach earlier this morning and its starting to move back a little bit. Will continue to drastically go down. We will have that Coastal Flood Advisory as we are he concerned about the king tide coming up again at 11 50 tonight and tomorrow morning just as high as today, up to 10 50 or 10 40 rather in the morning it will be up close to 7 feet. Anywhere where we do have that flooding, you dont want to drive over where the water covers the road. That will be a major concern storm. Right now as we get a live look outside at sunol, some of the rain drops on the camera lens, weve seen some of the passing showers and this is what we can expect, just enough rain to keep things wet. And keep it on your mind that you do still need the umbrella. As we get a look at what is happening now across parts of the south bay, a little bit of spotty rain. Weve had several inches of rain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Right now a chance to dry up. A little bit more of some breaks in the rain also for the east bay as well as the north bay. But dont be surprised if you see a little bit of some light rain coming down. Weve also been keeping an eye on the river stages and as of right now all of the rivers have gone below the flood stage except the Russian River at guerneville. And it wont be until Early Morning when we start to see those water levels receding below flood stage. So, still definitely something well be keeping an eye on as the river come up to 37. 6 feet and then slowly, once again, starting to recede below flood stage the next couple of days. We wont see as much heavy rain in the forecast as we see the system winding down, but still a chance of rain, still some waves of those showers moving through in time for the evening commute, and at 6 oclock this evening for parts of the north bay, the rest of the bay area may not see that rain until shortly before midnight. And once again, thats when we will have those king tides coming up once again so well have some rain and also that wat water welling up along the coast for inner bay. Maybe rain for a little while then it starts to taper off, the storm system winding down and rolling off to the east, some dryer air moving in. Finally for tomorrow, well have a couple days of sunshine in the forecast. Looking at how much rain we can see, the potential of an additional half inch rain, possibly three quarters of an inch of rain in some of those spots where the rain comes down, just a little bit harder. And for the sierra, a lot of moisture also rolling through that area. Weve had some blizzard warning in effect. Now we have a concern of avalanches with some of that snow that may be falling down some of those steep hill sides and blocking the roads as well. Danger to the skiers also. And the forecast for the weekend, if you do plan to head to the sierra, well see some additional snow fall amounts, but all of that ends as we head into friday as well as the weekend. Looking farther down the line, we are going to have another chance of rain in the forecast next wednesday and thursday as we turn our attention to the next storm that will be moving in. Scott and laura . All right. Of course, we have to remember its not just us here in the bay area. These storms have hit all over the west coast. Theyre finally getting a break, everyone, from the rain and the snow. There is still some danger in some areas. Nbc bay areas miguel has more. Reporter overnight just outside sacramento high drama. Miguel reporting there. Not the danger that leaves behind or that clean up that well be for sometime. Sometime. Exactly. In other news this morning, nbc bay area responds to a south bay man who says an airline insisted on checking his carry on bag he says might have cost him hundreds. Consumer investigator chris chmura with the response. Good morning. Edward was flying home from san jose with his wife who has disabilities. When he packed her medicine and his camera in his carry on bag, while he was helping his wife get seated on the plane, the Flight Attendant told him the overhead bins were full and he had to check his bag. Fortunately edwards wife did not need that medication during the flight, but when they reclaimed the luggage, edward found his camera was damaged. The lens was shattered. When he filed a claim with united, the airline said it doesnt cover losses for cameras. Frustrated edward reached out to us about this situation and we reached out to united. When we got a response, it told us it was going to cut him a 750 check for the lens as well as give him and his wife 20,000 united mileage plus miles. In a statement, united said, we look forward to welcoming ed back on board in the future and providing the Exceptional Service that he has held us to for the past 40 years he has flown with united. Now, this was out of edwards control, but its important to remember there are many items that airlines simply do not cover in luggage. That includes cameras, electronics, jewelry, and cash. So, if youre in a situation where you have to check your bag, tell the airline you need to remove these valuables before they take that bag. If you have a consumer complaint, you can call us.
