You have to drive a couple hours to get a healthy of amount of snow. You dont have to go anywhere to find frost on your windshield this morning. It was really cold this morning. Its starting to look a little bit better but i think the next several mornings we will be waking up to some frost on the windshield just like this morning. As we take a live look outside at San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge a lot of visitors here in town and they are enjoying the view and taking in all of the sunshine, but having to bundle up. You can tell that its breezy out there and as the cars drive across the bridge we have some beautiful sunshine but also the heater is on inside the car. Right now its 48 degrees, heading up to 54 degrees, so still feeling very chilly out there. 51 degrees now in oakland and 46 degrees in santa rosa, halfmoon bay 48 degrees, were struggling to make it out of those 40s. Looking across the country make you will be traveling or you have some family thats heading back home, well, this is where we may have some problem spots, especially as you head through parts of the midwest and there is a wintry mix from upstate new york extending all the way down to dallas with some rain and look at the difference ahead of that cold front and behind it. In chicago its 52 and then right now in little rock and louisville temperatures are in the mid 70s, while that cold air is rolling off to the east and we are in with some cool weather, too. Only seeing those highs today reaching 56 degrees in the peninsula, thats better than yesterday, though. In the trivalley 54 degrees, also 54 today in San Francisco. The north bay 55 degrees. Goykykn a live look outside at oakland you see that it is bright and sunny and its 51 degrees, heading up to 55. The temperature trend as we go through the day will be in the 50s until about 5 00 and then it quickly drops off as soon as the sun sets into the 40s and that is where we will stay for most of the night. Over the next several days more d onshore flow and slowly warming temperatures. It shows that there will be a couple weather systems moving through over the next several days but we will stay mostly dry until the new year. So most likely no more than rain for the rest of 2017. This is the model that shows how much rain we could see between now and monday. It shows the potential of no rain or up to a half of an inch. So thats something we will be watching over the next several days. Now, we have had some severe Drought Conditions here in the bay area for quite a while, but notice this, along the coastline there is no shade of color here meaning that its been drought. Along the coastline, San Francisco and then you see the yellow areas, that shows where its abnormally dry from napa county over toward oakland and then extending down toward palo alto. Just abnormally dry. And then a moderate drought from san jose up to parts of the trivalley and over toward fairfield but still in a severe drought as you head further off towards the east. Wow, thats really a Big Development there as we continue to monitor our drought status. Also a lot of snow in the sierra. Look at how cold it is right now in north star. The skiers are out there, this is a live camera, its only 7 degrees. So we will have some cold weather there and warming up here. Still not a lot of rain in this forecast. San francisco reaching 60 degrees between wednesday and thursday, this weekend it looks fairly chilly, also cooling off for the inland areas so enjoy those 6 09s for the next few days. Have a great day. Kris, appreciate that. Thank you. Still ahead, the new year brings a whole lot of new laws to california. For bart riders there is a big change when it comes to parking. What you need to know to avoid a hefty fine next. Youre watching nbc bay area news. The new year is only a week away and with 2017 comes a new parking crackdown at bart stations. Happy new year. Bart is also increasing fines for illegal parking. Nbcs pete certificate rat toe shows us how much it will cost you if you violate parking rules at bart lots. Reporter that fine could double for those who park illegally in a bart parking lot. Thats going to start next week. That could double if youre parking in a permitted lot. Here are the changes were going to see next week. If youre parking in a daily spot that fine last year was 35 but now its going to jump to 55. If you illegally park in a permitted spot that fine was previously 45 now its going to nearly double to 75. If you have five for more of those fines in a year there will be an additional fine of 100 bucks, if you have ten or more its going to jump to 150. Barts reasoning for this is to make it more costly for riders to deal with the fines instead of paying the toll around parking lots in San Francisco or bart stations specifically in San Francisco. Bart approved all of this back in february and those new fines are going to kick in next week on january 2nd. No doubt, pete, if you find one of those parking tickets on your car that 75 bucks will leave you a chill. Lets head outside to a chilly day in the bay area. Thats a live look of course at the Golden Gate Bridge, you see the flag flapping a little bit in the distance on your screen. Kari hall keeping track of the changes for us and clear and warmingish. As you head out today the heaters are still on, still need some long sleeves, its only 50 degrees right now in napa, its 51 degrees in oakland and 46 degrees in palo alto, san jose and livermore, and in San Francisco 48 degrees. Now, we started this morning with some 30s, even some upper 20s in the north bay. Were heading up to 55 degrees in santa rosa, 53 in morgan hill and in san jose 57 degrees. Tonight we will be back down into the 30s and it wont be as cold but still some patchy frost in some spots. So having to scrape the frost off the windshield one more morning and then it gradually warms up. You will really tell the difference during the afternoons, i will detail that coming up in the microclimate forecast. Sam. Thank you very much. We will eat well up on christmas. We will all miss our a Family Members but we will have a great time up here. So what would you eat . You might wonder on the International Space station for christmas. Well, their dishes included something traditional from each astronauts hometown so that includes turkey stuffing and chocolate cake and hot cider. French food items included ox tongue and gingerbread. This day after christmas finds many of us planning a mad dash to stores and shopping malls but for a far different reason than the one earlier in the month. Kris clackum on retailers preparing for all the returns. Some retailers could see as many shoppers today as they did in the days leading up to christmas, but this rush has to do with returns of gifts that are either damaged, not working, dont fit or those you just dont want. Odds are you will return one out of every ten gifts you got this year. More if gotten online. As much as 30 to 40 of things that are bought online can be returned. Cnbcs Courtney Reagan wrote recently about the many unhappy returns that come after christmas and what retailers do with all those returns. Maybe they sell it like an open box merchandise, best buy does that a lot or in some cases it has to be sent to a liquidator or a wholesaler. Theres also pressure on retailers to please customers, even when customers are exploiting the transaction. Many women, in fact, will order dresses or clothing in more than one size because they are just not sure, they never intend to keep all three of those exact same dresses just the one that fits. As sure as christmas returns a year from now, so will some of the gifts to be given. Kris clackum, nbc news. More backups at the mall. Perfect. Much more ahead. We look right now at this time at the end of last week when all the family and friends were coming in it was pouring rain but now when its time to go back home nice and clear, no rain for a little while. Isnt that the way it normally works now. Or the opposite. We are going to also have some temperatures in the 60s this week. So the kind of weather we will be bragging about to all of our family and friends elsewhere. Right now its been so chilly outside, here is a live look outside at emeryville, nice and sunny and getting busy as well. Some people heading back to work, some people going out shopping. No matter what you plan to do it is going to be dry. Here is a live look outside at the castro, it is only 48 degrees, this is much cooler than where we should be for this time of year and we are also feeling temperatures in the mid 40s going through sunol, you see the sun once again but not doing much to help warm up those temperatures. We do have mostly 40s and keep in mind we did start out this morning with some freezing temperatures in the valleys, we went from 29 degrees in the north bay to now 46 degrees. So starting to make a little bit of progress but it is still cool, heading up to 56 degrees today in the peninsula and 54 in San Francisco, the north bay up to 55 degrees and we are still going to keep the dry weather. We talked about a warm up, it will be here in time for the middle of the week and then we will be watching a couple storm systems moving in but right now looks like much of that rain will be very weak and the outlook for the rain doesnt look all that promising, maybe a half of an inch within the next several days and the Drought Monitor showing there has been some improvement along the coastline but still abnormally dry for a big chunk of the inner bay and then also down to the peninsula, still a moderate to severe drought as you head farther to the east. How are we doing as far as rainfall . Spots like santa rosa is at 151 of average with over 18 inches of rain. Oakland over 8 inches of rain there, up to 128 for the water year. San francisco 9 inches, so many spots at least 100 meaning we are right where we should be, but san jose just slightly below, but still not too bad. Nothing that we cant make up with one or two rainstorms. So looking still at some dry weather over the next several days. With all of that sun our temperatures rebounding, too. In San Francisco up to 60 degrees for wednesday and thursday, some mid 60s for the inland areas and then cooling down as we head into the weekend. Sam. All right. Sounds good. Thank you very much.
