They should have the fire contained over the next few days. Because of the hot weather and hot spots, firefighters say structures within the containment area are considered still threatened. Fortunately overnight no structures burned and the Geothermal Power plant in the area is safe. Theyre pretty used to wildfire in this area, so there was nothing that actually happened to the plant itself. Two north bay communities are now struggling after accidents that took the lives of several young children. On august 23rd, two sisters from jenner died when the truck their mother was driving crashed into the rushing river. There are three tenants in the building each assigned a certain number of parking spaces. When the veteran center uses up its 10 spaces, this man closes the gates and tells veterans they need to park elsewhere, even if there are open spaces available. I think its about the most insensitive thing you can do is to take a bunch of veterans who are coming somewhere for resources, thats what this is, a resource center, and look them out. We learned about a firefighter thats accused of stealing from his own department. His own colleagues discovered the stolen items inside of a garage while they were fighting a fire. Investigative reporter jackson vanderbeck has the story. Reporter this place had a fire and firefighters discovered their own equipment inside. Soon after a fire at the harrison street building, Police Seized a total of 25 departmentissued hoses and dozens of brass fittings from inside the building. It wasnt hard for investigators to tie the recovered equipment to firefighter mitchell lee. He listed the harrison street business as his address to the Fire Department. According to search warrants obtained by nbc bay area news, lee told investigators that he bought some of the Fire Equipment at flea markets. He picked up other pieces, he said, that, quote, had been left behind at fire scenes. He admitted, however, that he neglected to return them. Perhaps surprisingly, none of the items had been reported stolen. Lees attorney did not respond to calls on friday. At the building, lees specific Automatic Sprinkler Company business sign is no longer posted out front, and lees father melvin did not want to talk about the allegations against his son. We have learned that lee has just been notified that the Fire Department intends to fire him. Meanwhile, prosecutors are trying to determine whether hell face criminal charges. Sources tell us that at least one commander at the scene has been told he faces disciplinary action for downplaying the amount of Fire Department equipment involved. Jackson vanderbecken, San Francisco bay area news. A man accused of shooting in the Washington Mall will appear in court. He was arrested as he walked down the street in oak harbor less than 30 miles away from the scene of that shooting. He is accused of opening fire inside the cascade mall in burlington, killing five people. Police believe he is the lone suspect, but the motive is still unclear today. Governor jerry brown vetoed a bill this weekend that would have paid for the response to the San Bernardino Mass Shootings with state funds. The newbithe new bill would hav required them to reimburse people for that attack in september. Right now the state only repays local agencies 75 of the cost. The governor said he doesnt want to set a precedent for the state assuming all future emergency costs. Overnight ta city in South Carolina had protests. They finally released portions of the video of the shooting. Demonstrators knelt during the panthers game sunday. Charlotte is still under a state of emergency as the Community Picks apart three videos of that shooting. Investigators say they found scotts dna and fingerprints on a loaded weapon at the scene. They also say he was wearing this ankle holster. A freeze frame shows what could be the holster. Based on the totality of what we could see, he absolutely was in possession of a handgun. We are left with far more questions than we have answers. It should be noted that none of the recordings show scott pointing a weapon at police officers. A coasttocoast effort to End Gun Violence came to the bay area this weekend. San jose took part in concerts across america, 200 concerts in 200 cities all happening the same night. They took the stage last night. Stevens spent 36 years in prison for shooting three men over drugs. Since paroled in 2012, hes using lyrics to influence teens to make better decisions. But San Francisco interim police chief admits it goes beyond the music and really does start with a stronger community. It was a very heavy 24 hours in the sports world this weekend. Miami marlins fans as well and their team, the fan base having a very difficult time coming to grips with the fact they lost one of baseballs true rising stars, pitcher Jose Fernandez who died in a boating accident early yesterday. Youre looking at some of the video showing the aftermath of the accident as it took investigators some time to figure out how to tow that boat away. Two other people also died in that boating accident. Investigators believe speed played the primary role and that neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor. Fernandez was only 24 years old. He won the National League rookie of the year award two years ago and has quite a life story. He actually tried to defect three times in cuba before successfully doing it the fourth time at just the age of 15. The San Francisco giants reacted to that news by posting a statement about the death on twitter. That statement said, quote, we are deeply sadden ed by the tragic death of Jose Fernandez. Our hearts are heavy for the entire organization. Nearly 7,000 undergraduates, stanford students, will start classes on monday. One of those students is bob king. Hes a junior originally from palo alto, but hes also a senior. This is going to require some explanation. He has returned to the farm, so to speak, to finish his degree. It feels like i have a lot more to learn. The stanford sophomore is heading back to school even though hes a senior. Robert king is 65 years old and back on campus to finish his degree. Pretty interesting that california right now is actually hotter than las vegas and into arizona, because the strength of the ridge of High Pressure is strong across california, leading to the warmest day of the week today. Then tuesday watch the numbers here. San francisco and the coast as we move forward in time now, dropping to the 70s and as the low clouds and marine air finally makes a run up the coast and moves inland by wednesday, here comes the big cooling. Even for the valley, thats a big drop. Well see 80s inland but its going to take probably 48 hours for those temperatures to cool off. You see in the 7day forecast, cooling down the middle part of the week in San Francisco. Valley temperatures still in the 90s in a few spots tomorrow, but cooling wednesday and thursday. That longrange outlook shows a high getting out of here, tropical storms brewing to the north. As we take a look at the futurecast for rainfall, wrapping up september and october, pretty decent rain in the Pacific Southwest but it kind of stops here in areas south of sonoma county. We wont see a lot, but heading north of interstate 80 could see a lot. That cooldown, once it arrives for wednesday and thursday, should power through next weekend. But there was something good that happened, something janet feels needs to be shared with others. Janet frazier is not a magician. Shes actually a Marketing Coordinator at chevron. Still, janet is a woman with a few tricks up her sleeve, like how she managed to turn a single act of signkindness into 200,00 them. Its a wonderful tribute to stephanie. Reporter stephanie is janets daughter. In december of 2000, stephanie and her younger sister lindsay were in a car crash on highway 50 on their way to lake tahoe. Stephanie died. Lindsay was seriously injured. Janet raced to the hospital, not leaving lindsays bedside for days, not even to eat. And i stood up to get out of the way and almost fainted. And a nurse had me sit in a chair outside of the room, left and came back with her sandwich in her hands and said, take a few bites. I will never forget that feeling of somebody doing something so nice in the face of just a horrific time. Reporter inspired by that nurses gesture, janet began filling snack bags for patients families and delivering them to a local hospital. I absolutely thought that it would just be one hospital. I thought i never thought it would grow like it did. Reporter the network of care is what it has all grown into, delivering snack bags now to 60 hospitals around the bay area. More than 200,000 finding their way into families hands over the years. Knock knock a social worker at the hospital in oakland has delivered more than a few to some grateful parents. Theyre like, oh, my gosh, this is a lifesaver. Reporter janet says when youre the parent of a sick or injured child, the last person you think of is yourself. Good for all of them, then, that there are some out there happy to do it for them. The lesson i learned from that day was we can always do something to help somebody else in need. Reporte reporter as network of care has grown, one thing hasnt changed.
