The Health Department was out here for nine hours yesterday examining this location on Fourth Street in san jose to make sure the place is sanitized and food is being stored at the proper temperatures and restaurant has restrained its employees on proper food handling techniques. All employees who tested negative are allowed to return. The owner however, questions whether it was his employees who were the actual source of the outbreak. He wonders if it might have been a customer that brought in the bacteria that causes nausea and die rea ra. My employee got sick sunday night, it dont match friday to sunday. One employ only one got sick. So all of the other people nothing i can do, you know. This is not in my hands. I try to do better this time. Homelessness has long been a big problem for some of the bay areas biggest cities, a small town in Sonoma County, how it is trying the patience of the people who have long lived there. People have been coming up here since the 1800s. It is a small resort community, started out as a lumbering town. Deep in the forest of Sonoma County, the Russian River snakes along guerneville. The nature is the charm and pretty accepting of different lifestyles. Reporter but residents believe the towns welcome mat has rolled out too far. Sometimes youll find people passed out on the street or in their little plaza with their belongings. Reporter 6,000 people live in guerneville but up to 280 of those residents are homeless. They come here because its tolerated but its just gotten to a critical level. Per capita we have four times as many Homeless People than San Francisco. Nearly 10 of sonomas Homeless Population live near this small river town. The number is three times the national average. Carts and sleeping bags are common sights. Long time residents like mark emmet are fed up not just by what they see on town sidewalks but by the things just out of sight. This is what were dealing with right here. Reporter in a culvert several wooded feet from the towns main streets. Weve got couches and chairs and tables. Reporter remains of a recent homeless encampment. One of the things i see is clothes. Reporter leading regular volunteer cleanups of trash left by the homeless. I dont even know what to do with it. Its overwhelming. Kitchen sink. Reporter when the rains come much of this debris will wash into the Russian River. This is a tragedy. It makes people out here feel sad. Every winter the town opens a homeless shelter in the veterans building. The rest of the year hundreds of homeless live here in a sprawling tent city on the rivers edge. I wouldnt choose to live like this. Brought up middle class reporter lisa kagan is among the dozens who carved out a home in these woods. There are some homeless that live here that are good people. Reporter but kagan makes a distinction between the long term homeless residents and what she describes as a new wave of younger transient homeless who stirred up the towns residents. They do drugs and steal. Reporter they discover a massive camp packed densely with belongings. You kind of moved into this situation . One of them ended up being a thief, we ran him off. Its a little overwhelming that does doesnt seem to be a lot of people doing something about it. Reporter for years residents have grappled with the homeless issue. Real estate agent debra jawson helped search for a solution. We say we have these Homeless People and dont want them here but the fact of the matter is, you cant bus people out. Reporter Sonoma County recently approved funding for a long debated Homeless Service center in the town and will decide on a location in the next few weeks.
