This is on southbound 680 near yosemite drive in milpitas near the san jose border with milpitas. 30 minutes ago, all southbound lanes were blocked off, but now two of the four lanes are open. A driver hit a 23yearold woman in the middle of the road. Police pronounced her dead at the scene. She was not in a crosswalk. Police dont believe the driver was speeding. The driver is cooperating with police. B. A. R. T. Police are investigating a body found on the tracks early this morning. B. A. R. T. Police officer found that body at the richmond station just after 1 00 in the morning. No word yet on how the body got there or even who it is. There is no disruption to the morning commute. Just in to our newsroom this morning, a manhunt for an escaped prisoner near the washington, d. C. Area is now over. Police say a prisoner escaped custody from a Northern Virginia hospital with a guards gun early this morning. He was caught hours ago by metropolitan police in d. C. Officers say one shot was fired early this morning as a guard wrestled with the prisner in fair fax virginia. He was wearing a hospital gown and carjacked two separate people and got iowa. The inmate was held on a federal bank robbery charge and was taken to the hospital after trying to commit suicide. A case similar to one we saw earlier this month in the south bay. This man, john elkharter, escaped from a sheriffs deputy before an appointment at Valley Medical Center and he has not been seen since. Johnell carter is an accused child molesters. Investigators believe hes no longer in the south bay and he got away with his brothers help. New details on the controversy religious freedom law passed in indiana recently. Just hours ago, the states governor mike pence said he wants changed to the law on his desk by the end of the week after nation pushback. Governor pence said he has been meeting with lawmakers, quote, around the clock, to address concerns that the law will allow businesses to deny service to gays and lesbians. He said the law has been grossly mischaracterized and put indiana under a harsh glare. I believe in my heart of hearts that no one should be harassed or mistreated because of who they are, who they love or what they believe. And i believe every hoosier shares that conviction. Mayor of san bruno stood on the steps here of the building this morning saying its been a long fight, four and a half years, but hes fighting for the eight people who died in the explosion. He wants more than the 1. 6 billion in penalties against pg e. He did say he praised ctc president michael pickers decision to add 200 million to the fine. Thats the proposal, anyway, on top of the 1. 4 billion ordered by two judges against pg e for the explosion and fire for insufficient record keeping. He also supports picker pfz proposal shifting hundreds of millions of dollars from the general fund for Pipeline Safety. That cuts the Share Holders payment into the state general fund from 950 million to 300 million, and adds 850 million to go specifically to Pipeline Safety improvements. Thats in addition to 400 million in a refund to rate payers in the form of a onetime bill credit as well as 50 million to implement more than 75 safety improvements. The mayor said its a fight not just for the people of san bruno but all californians and their safety. Explosion in caramel, an explosion in cordoba. Its happening all over the state and its not going to end. We understand there are accidents, but some of the most frustrating parts of this whole adventure for us is the fact it was not an accident. This happened around 9 00 last night in dublin. You might have seen it from the freeway. Crews were called in from livermore to help fight the flames. Firefighters were able to keep the flames contained to the homes that were still under construction. Kept them from spreading to the ones that were already complete. No one was hurt. Crews say that they are still looking for the cause of the problem. And that they had problems early on. Difficult time finding the location because theres no streets on the map. Unfortunately, there is no easy remedy. Bob hansen reports. Most of the calls i get on the land line are telemarketers or recorded messages. 80 of the calls are from people i dont want to hear from. Even when you ask not to call again, within two or three days you get the same call. The federal do not call list doesnt seem to be working like we hoped. Today, people get rid of their home phones to stop telemarketers. 50 of those crazy calls i get are just computerized. Those robocalls are computers that can dial thousands of people an hour creating phony caller i. D. Numbers, hidden behind online calling systems. Not only an uannoying situation, it can be abusive and introusive and scary. The federal trade Commission Gets 250,000 to 300,000 telemarketing complaints every month. More than half about robocalls. In fact its gotten so bad that officials have said that if telemarketing calls were a disease, we would be having an epidemic. We dont have a cure for the epidemic. Deputy District Attorney said these calls can come from anywhere in the world and many of the calls target the elderly. We have two geriatrics who live with us and my mom has been scammed. These guys are good. Good at what they do which is bad for everyone else. The answer, screen your calls, be skeptical, and somehow catch the bad guys. To get serious about the cases and track these guys down and expedite them if theyre out of the country, bring them back and make a showcase out of it because we have to get the message out.
