A family of five has been seriously hurt after a twoalarm fire ripped through their apartment while they were sleeping. Three of them are fighting for their lives. They were stuck in their apartment after a twoalarm blaze ignited their twostory building on 24th street at treat avenue in San Franciscos Mission district. Around 4 30 this morning. Stephanie chuang has been at the fire scene all morning. And stephanie, some of the most critically hurt are children. Absolutely. We never like to hear any injuries, and especially not for these little kids. We just spoke with some family members of the victims. Very concerned of course and they juust rived on scene and are trying to get into the liquor store, which we understand is owned by the family that lives on the second story. An assistant fire chief describing a 6yearold slumped over the front window held up by a sibling. Firefighters using ladders to rescue several family members. A very big rescue this morning. From a roof across the street louisa reported cell phone video of smoke pouring out of the building. I heard screams, it was kids. And i think it was the woman. And she was screaming like help. Help . Help help. I heard some screams like someone saying help me help me. Please help me. I heard a trilling. And then i heard somebody like pulling on the gates making a lot of noise. And then i smelled the smoke. Firefighters say it was a thick, dense smoke, indicator of a high intensity blaze, burning up the threebedroom apartment. They praised firefighters for not just knocking down the fire but for risking their lives to save those inside. People screaming, yelling, an emotional scene. In the darx heavy conditions active flame and to make five rescues out of three different means of egress they did a phenomenal job. Neighbors say the family who lives there owned the liquor store below. I was scared because i have a 5monthold daughter. So you want to check it out. Hes like its right there in the liquor store. Oh, my gauths no. Theres little kids. We know the whole family. Its awful. Sad. And theyre entrepreneurs and its sad to see them suffer a loss. Right now, the focus is on their lives. Three of them the dad and two children, are fighting for their lives after suffering cardiac burn or smoke inhalation injuries. Two others, the mom and third children, are in serious condition. Neighbors say the kids are young, around 6 to 8 years old. My prayers go to them. You know i knew like i said i knew them. I feel so sad. You know . Especially for little kids. Back here live its blocked but theres a pile of debris. Firefighters were able to get them out fromicide the outsideinout here including a mattress and frames. The liquor store, meantime firefighters say two men were slipping on mattresses illegally and the store was padlocks from the outside. They were doing a standard search when they realized a hand started to stick out of the door and they rescued two guys. Were told those are worker. Those two men took off so we dont know what their conditions are. Also told my family members just now that the children are, the 17yearold boy, a daughter who is maybe around 13 or so, and then a little boy, the 6yearold boy. Who was revived actually by first responders. Meantime arson investigators from both police and fire are checking out what the cause and origin of the fire was. Nearly a dozen military troops are feared dead in a training accident overnight off the florida panhandle. Military Officials Say helicopter carrying the troops crashed in heavy fog. Reporter steven quinn has more from outside egeland air force base. Military Officials Say seven marines and four army crew members are missing after their helicopter crashed in a Training Exercise off the florida panhandle. We had two aircraft in Training Missions last night. One was reported missing at aboutate 30 p. M. The other returned to base safely. The black hawk helicopter similar to this one went down in the nuvaria sound off the florida coast between pensacola and destine. A swatch of beach owned by the military and used for test missions. We have found some debris from the aircraft. The fog is obviously hampering the recovery efforts. And thats where were at right now. That same fog may have played a role in the crash, but Officials Say those weather conditions overnight would not have stopped the training mission. They train how they would fight. So they would train in this type of environment. There are reports from the air force base that have said debris and human remains have washed up onshore, but they have not confirmed any deaths. The marines are part of a camp lejeune based special Operations Group and the air crew are from a hammond, louisiana, National Guard unit. San jose police and the fbi launched coordinant raids against gambling and prostitution. They targeted almost a dozen Vietnamese Coffee houses in san jose. Agentserated 11 cafes and confiscated roughly 100 gambling machines. Agents say the slot machines combined can bring in 100,000 per week in illegal gaming. We do know that sometimes there is prosttushz. Theres drugs and theres driel nls. And we want to remove that. These machines bring in a lot of money, so theres a lot of competition for the money and we want to make sure it doesnt continue here. Police say thill this will be an on going viminal investigation. At issue is the congestion at the toll plazas. Caused in part by the drivers just over my Left Shoulder here were talking about drivers who do not use fasttrack, who instead still pay cash to cross the bridge. It takes a lot more time than someone able to drive through. Cash payers contribute to the backups, especially on weekends when the metering loish are not in effect. Bay area Toll Authority is trying to imagine a day where everyone is paying electronically via fasttrack or license plate reader. Just moments ago, the authority approved a 450,000 contract to have an outside consultant look into the pros and cons of converting some if not all of the bay areas six caltrans bridges into electronic toll zones. This dutpuz does not affect the Golden Gate Bridge. It has eliminated its toll takers. The proposal theyre talking about affects the san mateo, dumbarton, richmond san rafael, bunesia martinez, antioch, and bay bridges. Trying to balance out the cash payers with the fasttrack payers, but theres only so much real estate. Slowly over time, its arer more and more fast track lanes. That process will continue. The question is do we go all in, kind of like the Golden Gate Bridge district and get rid of cash paying all together . Thats what the study is looking at, amongst other things. The authorities could end up leaving some cash lanes open during the day on some bridges like the antioch and then going fully electronic at night. Switching to electronic would cust costs by 15 to 20 . The Transportation Commission tells us there would be no toll takers who would be laid off, though some could choose to leave if they didnt take a job inside caltrans. The authority hopes to hear back from a consult nlt in a year. Any plans to implement a fully Electronic System could take several months after that. Many analysts will tell you its fears the fed is going to raise Interest Rates sooner rather than later. The open markets committee has a twoday meeting next week. Theyre not going to raise rates then, but they may give further signals. Another big factor is the european version of the fed. The European Central bank is kind of a few years behind us. Theyre just starting their massive push to right that ship over there with quantitative easing. Easy money or easy euros. That makes our dollar very very strong. Our dollar was already strong maybe too strong. It makes our exports more expensive. Thats a bummer if youre sisco or hp. Fewer people can afford your products. The strong dollar does make oil prices go down because oils pricing dollars take fewer of them to buy a barrel and you would think that would be good news for gas prices except we have reported labor and mechanical problems at refinery refineries have driven prices higher. Water officials in the south bay are backing off plans for a huge water rate hike. The santa clara water board said a smaller rate hike may still be necessary because of a massive budget shortfall caused by the drought. Last night, water districts lowered their initial recommendation for the maximum possible increase of 32 . Instead theyre recommended a 20 rate hike. That would translate to about 5 more a month for People Living in north santa clara county. Not lost revenue that has hurt us. Its looking for additional water supplies. That is the bulk of the money that we will be seeking for next year. The board directed staff to also look for more savings by delaying projects, not just asking consumers to pay the price. Selling districts property, thats not filled and not filling job openings are two things theyre considering. They will revisit the issue in may. A emergency drought plan is ruffling feathers in the trivalley. The Contra Costa Times reports in the san ramon district its on the fast track to buy 2 million in Emergency Water from uba county. That deal would boost supplies to 10 , but it is causing a rift with alameda countys zone seven water agency. Their normal water supplier. The agency says its contracted dublin san ramon does not allow outside water sources and thus it is objecting to the deal. What we need is for more water to fall out of the sky. Between now and 4 00. 3 to 6 inches of new snowfall expected above 7500 feet and 60 of the water that fills our reservoirs that we drink from here in the bay area comes from snow pack so snow pack is really the key to getting out of this drought, and so far, because the storm systems have been so warm this season we havent accumulated a lot of that. Our overall reservoirs that are filled with rain water are looking much better than a year ago. I was just out at the guadalupe and its better than a year ago. Showers will clear between 4 00 and 6 00. Warming trend on thursday peaks on saturday, into the 80s. Just as quickly as we bring the numbers up theyre going to drop off for the second half of the weekend, and we incorporate another round of shower activity. Thats good news. Our rain chances, not done not just yet. 74 degrees for thursday. Up to 77 on friday. 82 on saturday trying to make the weekend plans, saturday looks much better. Some of our local beaches will be in the upper 70s. So it should be really nice out there for the weekend plans. Outdoors, on saturday. Might even be warmer than you like it. While the boston suburb of watertown was on lockdown five days after the marathon bombing with the hunt on for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he was hiding for hours in a boat stored in a backyard, writing a 230word essay in pencil on the fiberglass interior. Now for the first time the government has released pictures of what he was writing streaked with his blood. Though the photos show only a small portion of the boats interior wall it was clearly riddled with Police Gunfire before he surrendered. In Milpitas Police are trying to track down who broke into the king way Computer Repair business and stole 800 computers. The law says up to more than 240,000 dollars. A witness tells nbc bay area the goods were loaded into two white cargo vans. Police may soon team up with Liquor Store Owners to fight crime. Berkeleys city count voted in favor of an ordinance that requires Liquor Stores install or up grade their surveillance cameras. Today, the cameras help put suspects behind bars in two kills in 2013 in berkeley. Police say this is a good Crime Fighting tool. The moment i walked in it was no doubt it was the right thing. It was okay to be shy and awkward, and it was okay to be whoever it was you were. And to stand on stage like that. And i like that. It was very very revolutionary for me. Such a revelation steven couldnt wait to share it. He knew there must be other kids just as lost in this land of plenty as he and couldnt wait for them to experience what he did. Were all probably a little nervous. It happens. Which is why at the age of 20, he started his very own theater company. Place where theres not going to be bullying or back stabbing or clicks or anything like that. Where everybody is really working together and supporting eemp other together. Just three years in and the theater is on its seventh show. Already close to 150 young people have acted for and learned from steven. The fact that just a few years removed from his darkest time these kids look to him as a Guiding Light amazes steven. And his dad. Hes come a long way. Steven realizes that once he fell in love with theater, he could have aspired to be a great actor. He would much rather work on being a better person. You know no matter how badly you have messed your life up or someone has, you can recover from that and do something very special. You know something way beyond you. Socalled alcohol got the goahead briefly last year before the bureau said the approval was a mistake, but today, a Bureau Spokesman said the issues have been resolved. He added states do have the authority to regulate the kinds of alcohol sold. Many states have moved to ban powdered alcohol, sighting worries people might overconsume or even snort the powder. A new study suggested antidepressants may be linked to improved heart health. Researchers followed more than 5,000 people with moderate to severe depression. Patients who took antidepressant had a 53 decreased risk in having heart disease. Taking statins erased these benefits. Antidepressants did not seem to boost the heart health of people without depression. Theres no supplement out there with enough evidence to show its going to help you lose weight, and some unethical manufacturers add banned prescription drugs to supplements. In fact hundreds of weight loss supplements have been recalled by the fda that contain drugs readily lists on labels linked to heart risk hepatitis, liver failure. The short answer is dont take weight loss supplements theyre unregulated, they dont work, and they could heard you. Stick to the tried and true. The biggest allies are still diet and exercise. Roosevelt high School Students experience four different handson learning programs introduced by the Transitions Learning Center that theyre incorporating into their high school curriculum. My hope for skills especially kids here they see theres a Life Beyond High School and future in the work theyre doing is going to take them to the next place. One of the programs combines math and construction to build a human sized foosball theme. Nobody asks why do we need to know this . 250d today was a great example trying to line up the size of the boards. Sometimes in the classroom, information goes in one ear and out the other, and students agree concepts are easier to grasp when its used in a real life scenario. If you have ever played foosball with your friends, i bet you werent thinking about the geometry that goes into it which is what these students were learning when they built this. Its better for kids to have handson experience than just paper and pencil. Classrooms are not my thing, so stuff like this where you can build what youre learning about is amazing.
