Ive been training for a solid nine months. The poor air quality canceled several other events in tahoe and reno, as well. Our National ParkService Plans to set its own fire in the north bay today. Officials are scheduled to light two fires along highway 1 between randall trail and dog town in lima valley. They hope the burns will create a fire break along the highway to help crews control future wildfires. The prescribed burns are weather permitting, of course, if theres a shift in the wind or changing conditions, the whole plan will be put on hold. Days after the nfl commissioner broke his silence about Domestic Violence, senator Barbara Boxer is now calling for zero tolerance today. Nbc bay areas bob redell with the latest. Barbara boxer is asking the nfl to force teams like the 49ers to punish players like ray mcdonald, you might recall was arrested for Domestic Violence asking for them to be punished even though they werent he wasnt charged and obviously not convicted of a crime. Senator boxer is pressing her case in another letter this morning to the nfl. This one addressed to cynthia hogan, the nfls brand new senior v. P. Of Public Policy and government affairs. Shes been charged with helping the league develop policy in how to deal with players involved in Domestic Violence. In the letter, boxer writes, quote, roger goodell, hes the commissioner talked about a process to change the nfls policy regarding Domestic Violence. But he never mentions zero tolerance as a goal or guiding principle. You need to have tolerance in order to have policies to achieve it. It is therefore imperative that the nfl make a real commitment to prevent Domestic Violence in its ranks, encourage victims to come forward and punish all of those responsible regardless of the level of involvement by Law Enforcement officials, unquote. This morning, we reached out to kathleen, the head of next door solutions, Domestic Violence here in the south bay. She questions commissioner goodells hiring of cynthia hogan. Yes, she says hogan seems qualified, she helped craft the violence against women act when she was chief council at the United StatesSenate Judiciary committee. But she wonders if her hiring is nothing more than window dressing. No, im very cynical at this point. Is the token, you know, shes female and shes got some background and thats all wonderful. But seems to me that the title lends itself to shes there to smooth out the public rather than work on the team. A new problem off of the field for the 49er player accused in a Domestic Violence case. Sources tell nbc bay area that someone broke into the san jose house of ray mcdonald on saturday night. A defensive lineman for sundays game against the cardinals. No suspects have been named in the case. Police arrested mcdonald as you recall last month on suspicion of Domestic Violence. The teams decision, though, to leave him on the field has led to growing criticism from several highprofile former players and as we mentioned, current politicians. Police are helping a new video can help identify the vehicle of a thief who stole a package in front of a home. You can see the car pulling into the victims driveway. Within seconds, a woman gets out of the car, runs to the front door, grabs a package and gets back into the car. The car appears to be 2014 or 15 silver Chevy Traverse suv with tinted windows. Investigators say at least one other person was in the car but cant be seen in the video. If you know anything about this incident, you are asked to call livermore police. Union city police hope the public can help them track down an elderly man missing for five days. 84yearold leland pryor left his townhouse on partridge way around 11 00 thursday morning. He has not been seen since. Late yesterday, the department issued a socalled silver alert. Pryor last seen wearing a shirt, tie and hat. His family describes him as quite selfsufficient for his age. Investigators are still trying to figure out what led to a deadly accident involving a pedestrian on an east bay freeway overnight. This happened on 680 near red gear road in walnut creek. Chp officers were called to the scene after 11 00 last night by someone who hit the person. Investigators say its unclear how many cars hit the victim or why that person was on the road in the first place. At least one vehicle has been impounded. So investigators can collect evidence, but so far, no one is under arrest. Crews right now are assessing the damage after a melting glacier sent miles of mud sliding down mount shasta this week. Began around 3 00 saturday afternoon and continued for hours. Officials say Drought Conditions likely contributed to the glacial melt. Spokesperson says that mud slide was the largest on mount shasta in some 20 years. A popular swimming spot is offlimits in San Francisco after a weekend oil spill on a ship docked at one of the citys biggest tourist attractions. The oil spill forced the closure of the open water swimming area at aquatic park. Warning signs posted for swimmers to stay out of the water. The department of fish and wildlife is making sure theres minimal impact to the marine life. And the coast guard working with fishermen to make sure cleanup efforts dont impact their work. We havent had any notification of any beaches being closed. And were working with the commercial fishermen in the harbor to determine the best way to establish those cleanup efforts and do them effectively with minimal impact to their operations. Apparently happened on pier 45. The cleanup is expected to take three days. Starting today, buildings in San Francisco will be forced to post a new public warning. Displaying up to 4,000 warning signs on those socalled quakerisk buildings. The signs will warn people that the buildings owners have not complied with a law requiring older, wooden frame buildings. They gave building owners a year to fill out screening forms. City Officials Say at this point, more than 90 of building owners have, in fact, complied with that rule. Students are getting lessons in Sexual Assault prevention as they return to campus. Put together a task force of students, professors and staff in hopes of finding better ways to prevent and respond to Sexual Assault. This new effort comes just months after a stanford student leah francis came forward claiming she was raped by another student. She says that student wasnt punished enough and demanded change. A new uc davis study shows that low iron levels during pregnancy may be linked to an increased risk of autism. This was especially true in women who were older than 35 or who had obesityrelated hypertension or diabetes. In fact, those women who had low iron were five times more likely to have a child with autism. Experts say iron is crucial to Early Brain Development especially to specific pathways associated with autism. The researchers say they need to study it more. Well, premature babies kept in a Single Family room in the intensive care unit have Better Outcomes than open bay environment. That study published says infants in a single room weighed more when they were discharged and required fewer medical procedures and also had lower stress levels and less pain according to the study. After Law EnforcementOfficials Say he breached the most heavily guarded house in the country friday night. The cell phone video captured the chaos. Witnesses say he jumped over the white house fence, sprinted to the first familys residence and then entered through the unlocked front door. He was quickly apprehended. Officials say he had a knife like this in his pocket. Brandon took this stunning footage. This came about maybe 15 to 20 seconds to reach the steps of the white house. The white house staff and press corps were evacuated. The first family had left for camp david moments earlier. In a statement the agency said the location of gonzalezs arrest is not acceptable. I have Great Respect for the secret service, but this is inexcusable. A Law Enforcement official says the investigation will include a look at why the canine units werent dispatched. Usually protocol. You certainly cannot allow an intruder to make it that far. If you have to kill the individual, then you kill the individual. While fence jumpers arent unusual making it inside the executive mansion is unprecedented. Its another setback for an agency trying to rebound from a series of embarrassments, including the 2012 scandal involving prostitutes in columbia. Now, new questions about the leadership of this storied agency. Thats what the secret service exists for is to protect the white house, the office of the presidency by whatever means necessary. Nbc news has confirmed that the secret service is now considering unprecedented security changes, including setting up check points for tourists blocks away from the white house. In massachusetts, the search is on for three Afghan Soldiers who went missing while at a Training Exercise at a military base. The three had been participating in a cooperation exercise at cape cod. They were last seen at a massachusetts mall. Federal, state and local officials have been looking for them since saturday night when they were first reported missing. Officials do say the three Afghan Soldiers are not considered a threat to the public. Police in pennsylvania say they are getting closer to finding the suspect who killed the state trooper and injured another. Investigators are looking right now into the death of a Rutgers University student attending a party at a frat house. Police say 19yearold woman became distressed while attending the party at the delta kappa epsilon house. The cause of her death has not been determined. But officials believe that alcohol may have been involved. Two women were killed and dozens were injured sunday afternoon when a new york based tour bus crashed. Anne thompson reports. That keeps replaying in my mind. A sunday afternoon drive turned deadly when a tour bus carrying 50 people crashed and overturned. Delaware state police say the bus was traveling southbound on route 1 when it hit a curve on an off ramp, flipping on to its roof. The bus continued sliding down a slight grass embankment, rotating on the left side where it finally came to a stop. One adult female was underneath the bus where she was trapped under that bus. That woman died at the scene. Another woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The remaining 47 passengers onboard and the driver suffered a range of injuries. Injuries vary widely. These patients have some have head injuries, some have injuries to their torso, ribs, abdomen, fractures, extremities. So multiple Different Levels of injury. 19yearold College Student and a friend were on their way home from the mall when they saw the overturned bus. They pulled their car over and jumped out to help. We went to a car, got up, farris aid equipment, passed out gauze, bandages, whatever you could at the time. C. No word yet on why the driver lost control. The middle east now. Kurdish Peshmerga Forces on the front lines in northern iraq. The peshmerga have made gains, including taking back control between the cities of mosul and irbil. U. S. Air support played a vital role in that victory. U. S. Troops also sent to iraq to train local Security Forces there. Meanwhile, french leaders say that isis has threatened to kill french citizens for its role in the air strike. More than 2,600 people have died in west africa over the last nine months in what is the biggest outbreak of the virus ever recorded. All of them got this alarming letter from the El Paso Department of Health Warning their infant may have been infected with t. B. A hospital employee who worked in the nursery was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis. Officials are not releasing her name but say shes been put on leave. The hospital says so far, no other employees have tested p e positive for the illness. Babies are at risk without a doubt. Some ferguson, missouri, residents are equipping themselves with cameras and in turn, knowledge. Over the weekend, citizens went through training to better understand their civil rights. And they also learned how to properly Record Police interactions with the public. Devices like this are becoming more and more common in this community. The Ferguson Police department was equipping themselves with 50 body cameras. So we thought it best to equip this neighborhood with 110 body cameras. Tells me the cameras are helping Community Members protect themselves and others through a very specific purpose. Its a nonviolent observation of the police where people go out with with video cameras and document the police when they stop members of their community. With the cameras come responsibility and training. We copwatch, the watchmen. This is what the police seem to do. They target us. And we wanted to change that kind of image of, like, protecting the people. David witt and Jacob Crawford are educating people how to protect their own rights and the program has the approval of fergusons police chief. Just the idea of private citizens filming police, doing their jobs, i dont see anything wrong with it. As a matter of fact, it happens all the time. That was grant bissel reporting. Their goals are to teach l citizens their rights when theyre stopped by police and how to hold Police Accountable for any inappropriate behavior. Some of the countrys wealthiest people will pledge to stop investing in fossil fuels and instead, put their money in clean energy. More than 60 foundations, institutions and individuals controlling 50 billion in assets are pledging to begin pulling their investments from coal and oil companies. Here at home, the San Francisco based Goldman Environmental Foundation and the john and Marcia Goldman fund will announce their plans to divest, as well. Nasas latest spacecraft is now orbiting mars. Late last night, the maven satellite successfully reached that planet after traveling more than 440 million miles. Mission managers announced the craft had officially begun orbiting the red planet.
