An apparent copper wire theft turned deadly. Investigators say the suspect died after breaking into an oakland fire. Nbc bay areas Stephanie Chuang is at the factory, which has been empty for quite some time. Reporter good morning. Were here at west rand and mandela parkway. A very Industrial Area here in west oakland. You can see pacific pipe company, an abandoned building. This fence around it with bashed wire, but graffiti everywhere. The question is why there were still live wires in this building sitting empty for years. The victim didnt think there could be any wires carrying any electric currents. Last night, medics responded to reports of an electrical shock victim, but when they arrived, the man had been electrocuted already and pronounced dead at the scene. The burns were consistent with what youd get handling lowvitalalow h lowvoltage wires, leading police to believe the man was trying to steal the copper wires here. You may remember last fall, uc berkeley caught the National Spotlight after an explosion, a fireball seen by witnesses in an electrical vault at the heart of campus that injured one person and trapped 20 others in elevators. The power system failure was later linked to copper wire thieves who used equipment to dig up and seal copper lines. As for the catalyst for the trigger for all this, likely copper prices. New details now on the flight that disappeared over northwestern africa this morning. Frances foreign minister now says that air algeria plane has probably crashed. So far, no trace of the plane has been found, but french fighter jets are still searching near northern mali. The area has seen a lot of unrest in recent years, but it is not believed that fighters there would be capable of shooting down a plane like the rebels in ukraine. The plane was going to algier, the capital of algeria. The crews last message to air control was to request a change in course because of heavy rain. There are 160 people on board. Now to an update about the passenger plane shot down in eastern ukraine. Bodies of more victims from the crash arrived in the netherlands today, but back in eastern ukraine, the planes wreckage remains scattered over the crash site. Nbcs keir simmons reports some of the victims are still there too. Reporter good day to you. It kind of takes your breath away that its possible to stand here, this close to the wreckage of and that the fighting continues about 15 miles in that direction. That is where those ukrainian fighter jets were downed yesterday. And in amongst this wreckage is still peoples possessions. Across here, for example, where there was this fireball, one of many that happened during the crash, you can see parts of the plane, but also, peoples suitcases, there are shoes here, peoples bags. Sometimes your eyes have to focus a little bit on something to figure out what it was. But you can see aircraft seats and all kinds of the bits and pieces that will be on a commercial airliner. The investigators who are here have been searching this field in the distance there. You can see, there is still wreckage there. So none of that has even begun to be picked up. Peoples personal possessions have not been gathered together, and worse than that, today, we saw a piece of human remains, still marked by a white flag, that hadnt been collected. Next to it was a childs seat belt and a childs shoe that looked like that little one was about 2 years old. So even while in the netherlands, they are trying to give the people who died here some kind of dignity. Here, its incredibly disturbing that people are still being treated with such disrespect.
