Nbc bay areas Stephanie Chuang is live in San Francisco. Stephanie, the way he got stuck, kind of like a scene in a movie. Reporter yeah, you could say that. Good morning to you, scott. You know, the driver of the truck heard pounding when he was sitting there driving around 6 30 this morning and found out he had picked up more than his usual cardboard load. And he instinctively drove a couple of blocks here to this fire station where he got firefighters and they rescued the man that could have died if not for the quick actions of that driver. The dumpster went out this morning, the individual ended up getting tracked. Reporter San Francisco firefighters, even the veterans, are calling it a first. Pulling a man out of the back of a cardboard recycling truck on to a backboard and metal stretcher. The man, who may have lost his shoe in the mix, suffered shoulder injuries, forced to wear a brace. But he was awakened up to mumbled responses, back to the firefighters and paramedics wheeling him to the awaiting pluns. The older man was sleeping in the dumpster when it was picked up and tossed into the back of the truck. He was partially crushed. These trucks are equipped with a hydraulic system used to compact the cardboard to make more room. 20veteran driver mike jones immediately shut that system off when he realized what was happening. He heard this gentleman pounding in the back of the truck. He actually talked to the gentleman from the cab of the truck and said, im going to drive you to the fire station. Good job, you know. Reporter and you know youve done a good job when the people dedicated to save you lives call you a hero. If he hadnt had heard him, he would have been trapped in that thing all day and he would have died. He is a hero. Reporter had the man stayed in the truck, he would have ended up across town at pier 96 at the main recycling plant, dumped up to the tipping point, with recyclables more than 20 feet high. But he is expected to recover just fine. That is good news. And by the way, scott and chris, the driver, apparently, went to the debriefing, told the investigators at the company what happened and went right back to finish his route. Live in San Francisco, Stephanie Chuang, nbc bay area news. Very strange story. Glad it ended nicely. Steph, thanks. New developments this morning in the middle east. The faa is banning all u. S. Airlines from flying to the tel aviv airport in israel. The move m comes after a hamas rocket exploded near the area. That ban is for the next 22 hours. The faa will continue to monitor the situation. Meanwhile, the u. N. Continues to work to try to get israel and hamas to agree to a ceasefire. However, israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says first the International Community must hold hamas accountable for refusing multiple ceasefire offers. John kerry says just reaching a ceasefire is not enough. Kerry says underlying issues must be addressed to move forward. Egypt has proposed a ceasefire plan that is supported by the u. S. And israel, but not hamas. Now to the latest on that Malaysian Airline plane crash. The United States is now preparing to release intelligence about what it knows about the plane shot down in ukraine. Meanwhile, investigatored searched the sight of the crash, why the remains of most of the victims were removed from the area. Nbcs keir simmons has more from eastern ukraine. The people who have died here have been given so little dignity. But this morning, local ukrainians held prayer. The bodies of the dead were transported by train overnight to a safer region of ukraine. Dutch forensic efforts who examined them yesterday must identify each victim. It may take time before they can be returned to their families. They had been left lying in the road, prompting international outrage. But late last night in a bizarre ceremony, those rebels handed the black boxes to the malaysians. A malaysian government source tells nbc news that the countrys Prime Minister directly negotiated with the rebels, the state Department Apparently informed of a diplomatic deal to get the bodies is and black boxes back, as the president made this combative statement. What exactly are they trying to hide . Reporter statecontrolled tv in russia suggests Ukrainian Military shot down the passenger jet, mistaking it for president putins own plane. Russian television also put forth a conspiracy theory, that the plane was full of corpses and taken down by the u. S. , in an attempt to start a war with russia. U. S. Officials lambasted those claims, as nonsense. While in the field, aircraft metal, apparently riddled with damage from a missile, is finally within the reach of investigators. Those investigators moved on to look at peoples possessions. They are taking their time at each site in this wide crash area. And all the time, they are accompanied by rebels wielding kalashnikovs. Quite the roller coaster ride, meanwhile, for the Affordable Care act this morning. Two different Appeals Courts took completely different takes on the latest challenges to the law. In a potentially lethal blow, a federal Appeals Court in washington, d. C. , ruled the government cannot subsidize Health Insurance nor plans for people in states that did not set up their own marketplaces. But, about an hour later, the fourth u. S. Circuit court of appeals in richmond took the completely opposite point of view, ruling that subsidies are legal. Now, these decisions change nothing right now. Were likely to see more court action to come in the next few years, before the matter is settled, probably in the supreme court. And now lets take a look at this. Lightning overnight in San Francisco. Video sent to us by a viewer in the mission district. It all started around 4 30 this morning and that unusual light show was seen all over the city. You can see here, lightning over at t mark. Meteorologist christina loren, that lightning brought some rain summer rain as i took off on a little walk this morning. Of course, timing perfect. Kind of like that young lady you just saw. She had her umbrella out. You know what, here in the south bay, we actually got some impressive totals. About 600th of an inch, but for one day in july, thats pretty significant. And when you add to the fact, this is typically, cli climatological climatologically, the hottest week of the entire year, it really makes things unusual. The subtropical moisture, we do this see every summertime, but not to this magnitude. This is basically the most ive ever seen. And ive done weather in california for over ten years. What you can see here is those light showers are starting to deteriorate, but we had a lot of lightning earlier, especially right offshore and up in the north bay. At this point, just some hit or miss cells here, really spotty, not organized. And the system was clearing out, but we do have the threat of more thunderstorms as we accumulate that daytime heating today. Overall, starting to see a good amount of clearing in San Francisco, same for the oakland hills, and looking really pretty here over the Santa Clara Valley from high atop mt. Hamilton. Temperatures in the 70s, comfortable for today. One more chance for showers tomorrow, and then we bring on that heat. Well talk all about that coming up in our main micro forecast. The santa clara Water District may be putting its money where its mouth is. Today, the board will consider whether to spend 500,000 to add as many as ten water costs to the stats. Up until tow, the focus has been on conservation, but the Water District user as have only cut back use by 12 and not the 20 that the governor mandated. Already, the district has encouraged people to report water hogs via phone and even an iphone app. But if the board votes to hire those water costs, they may be more like hall monitors with the ability to control and investigate complaints, but not actually fine people. What they can do is refer an issue or a particular property to the local water provider or city that does have the ability to issue a fine. People in san joses green more court might be glad to see a water cop on their street. They say they reported this water leak on their street and then told by the Water District it wasnt a high priority. Now to a drought of a different kind. The red cross asking hemoto roll up their sleeves the donate. Theyre facing a looming blood shortage. Reporter good morning, kris and scott. The American Red Cross is trying to avoid the emergency situation it found itself in last summer, when the blood supplies were so low, that some hospitals throughout this country actually had to cancel elective surgeries. Now, they point out, theyre not there yet, thanks to donors like these, who you can see theyve rolled up their sleeves for this blood drive at the work Day Corporation in pleasanton. But the red cross could end up in emergency, if more people dont start donating. Donations are down nationwide by about 8 , since around the start of may. Mostly because so many people have been on summer vacation. Now, the red cross is lacking for all blood types, especially o negative, which is only 2 to 3 of the population. But supplies are around 10 of the blood in hospitals, because everyone can receive o negative, regardless of their blood type, you can imagine how crucial that is in a trauma situation in the er. How can you spend about an hour of time and be a hero, you know . Donating blood means your one pint, your donation, may help save three lives. It doesnt take much time and it doesnt cost anything other than the hour that im here and i feel like im doing good. People dont like having a needle in their arms for a few minutes. But when you think about doing that and youre helping three people, you know, its a nobrainer. Reporter and by announcing this urgent need, again, its not an emergency yet, but this urgent need, theyre trying to get other corporations like workdays or other groups to sponsor these blood drives. And of course, theyve got five Donor Centers throughout the bay area. So anybody, any individual, can come to one of those centers, theyre pretty spread out, well enough that theyre convenient. And you go to givelive. Org if you want to get more information on where you can donate blood. Ive been a donor on and off for many years, and ive got to tell you, its fairly painless, as far as when they stick that needle in your arm. Well, you do it for the free cookies, though, bob. We were there as police told one man this morning at the powell street station in San Francisco, the mans legs are outstretched, and under the new rules, that is a nono, along with anyone sleeping. The long corridors in these stations are a concern for police. They describe the new policy as a safety measure, not an antihomeless measure. They want to be able to evacuate the station in four to six minutes in case of emergency. Theyre not like being real rude. Theyre, you know, giving people time to wake up and get out. But they basically want people up on their feet. They dont want them sleeping down here in the hallways. Sometimes i have to go around them. It can be a health hazard, all that. What if something happened and weve got to evacuate the building and weve got to step over people thats sleeping. So i agree with that. There are three steps as part of this b. A. R. T. Lets put a camera on that. You know what, were still watching your radar at this hour. A little bit of spotty activity, most of which is racing off into the sacramento slvalley. But we have some pretty impressive rainfall totals for this time of year, and as i stop that radar, especially in the south bay, all the way north of San Francisco, we are drying out. As we accumulate that daytime heating, were still going to see enough of that moisture coming through the bay area to potentially see a few more showers. But you might be wondering, what is driving this wild weather . Well, im going to explain that to you right now. High pressure comes up. This is monsoonal flow. This is actually traditional for this time of year. It brings in all that moisture from just off the coast of baja, grabs it, and brings it into northern california. Now, today, we have an additional moisture source. A little coastal eddy just offshore. So its increasing. That moisture all getting pumped into the bay area, and Something Else thats unusual thats taking place, because of our unusual pattern, because of that monsoonal flow, we have some really warm water just offshore. Temperatures in the ocean, in the pacific this time of year, typically in the 50s. Right now, if you got into that water, not too cold, youre at 62 degrees.
