Jon kelley has the day off. We do have new details in a deadly trailer fire in san leandro, this one broke out around 3 30 this morning at the trailer park on grand avenue. Christie smith is live at the scene now with more on the desperate efforts by neighbors who tried to rescue the two people who were trapped inside. Christie, good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Right now, fire investigators interviewing those neighbors about what they saw and did as this fire first broke out overnight. I want to step aside so you can see what the trailer looks like this morning. Those neighbors tried to help but the trailer filled up with smoke and there was so much debris that they say they couldnt even get in. There was debris from the interior melting and also items packed inside. It was even difficult for firefighters to maneuver but they found two victims. The smell of smoke coming from a small trailer in san leandro woke neighbors in the middle of the night. Mildred ortiz says she ran out and heard an elderly woman inside. What did you hear her say . Are you okay . She said, no, im not okay. Reporter neighbors at the trailer park grabbed hoses and tried frantically to get in and save her, finally using a stick, they say, to break the doorer. She must have been in the back because the second window, that was the one i was breaking. This one, too . You broke the window, you broke the door, you hurt your hand, you couldnt get her out . I couldnt get her out. I couldnt get her out. It was too much smoke. Reporter she says the woman was disabled, the trailer packed with items. She told us the husband was not home. Firefighters arrived within minutes to grand avenue, the trailer in flames. Once inside, they found one person dead, then at daybreak, after sifting through the trailer, a stunning announcement, a second body. All the material thats surrounding the interior of the trailer actually collapsed down on top of it. They had a lot of other debris, shall we say, in the residence as well. It looked like some shelving materials fell down and collapsed on the person. The second occupant. Also collapsed down trapped in a corner area. Reporter early on, firefighters did not say whether the victims were male or female. Ortiz showed us a cut on her hands and says she cant believe, despite all the efforts, two people are gone. I didnt know this lady, but i heard her voice. Reporter we are back here live. I wanted to show you the trailer again, it is relatively small, about 20 feet by eight feet. Actually, the kind that you might pull behind a truck. So far, no cause. Now, when we arrived, some neighbors actually questioned the firefighters 911 response time. They thought it took a long time, but firefighters tell us that it actually took about four minutes. Reporting live in san leandro, christie smith, nbc bay area news. An arrest following a deadly stabbing at a high school near houston, texas. One student died, three others were injured. Emergency officials were called to the school in spring, texas, around 7 00 this morning. A school nurse said four student also been stabbed. Deputies are now investigating if this was gang related. We are learning new details about the death of aerial castro, the man convicted of kidnapping three girls and holding them captive inside his cleveland home for almost ten years was found dead inside his prison cell last night. Castro committed suicide and his Attorney Says his death should have been prevented. More from cleveland. Reporter just a month after ariel castro was sentenced to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, the 53yearold was found hanged inside his prison cell at the Correction Reception Center news of his death came in a latenight statement from the Ohio Department of rehabilitation and correction. According to the prison, castro was being housed in protective custody in his cell by himself and was monitored every 30 minutes by guards. Prison medical staff attempted lifesaving measures before transporting castro to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10 52 p. M. Local time. The prison has promised a full review of the death bus castros Attorney Says he, too, will work to find out what really happened. Well, anything but a suicide or it is a suicide, we are going to get to the bottom of t theres no way we are going to let this go especially if light of the fact thats been 30 days. Just four days before the 49ers kick off their season, one of their defensive stars is in legal trouble, a story our Investigative Unit first broke last night. A civil lawsuit filed yesterday makes strong accusations against all pro linebacker aldon smith and former 49er tight end, delanie walker. Walker is now with the Tennessee Titans. The lawsuit stems from an outofcontrol party that ended in gunfire at smiths home in san jose in june of 2012. The attorney for the man says his client was one of two people shot that night. Smith and walker repeatedly and illegally fired weapons on numerous occasions the night of the party, he says it also claims the two were intoxicated. One point, the suit claims walker made his way to the driveway and fired shots into the air toward people attending the party. The man shot twice but doesnt know exactly hot gunman was. He says he sustained serious and permanent injuries. Smith will have no comment on the pending litigation, his Attorney Says. The Investigative Unit reached out to the Tennessee Titans but got no response. Sentencing for convicted killer joseph naso set to begin today, found guilty in a marin county courtroom last month of killing four women. The murders happened in the 1970s and 90s in northern california. Naso acted as his own attorney during this trial. Family members of one of his victims says he hopes he get the death penalty. The latest on the crisis in syria. There may be a delay in a Senate Resolution authorizing president obamas proposed military intervention in syria. A senator from wyoming says the Senate Foreign Relations Committee may not vote on the resolution today. Word of the delay came after republican senator john mccain of arizona said he did not support the latest version. Mccain is an outspoken advocate of u. S. Intervention in syria. He says he wants to see more than just Cruise Missile strikes and other limited action. Back here at home, san jose is poised to put more Police Officers on the streets. The city council has tentatively approved a plan to add about 200 officers to the force over the next four years. It will also restore a 10 pay cut officers took during the recession. The Police Officers Association Says the time frame too long and full of empty promises. The new plan will cost the still about cost the city about 50 million a year. Parking problems on the peninsula and one citys mayor is taking full responsibility for the influx of cars that are causing all the commotion. Nbc bay areas arturo santiago is live in East Palo Alto now with more on this story. Ar tur row, good morning. Reporter good morning, marla. The problem here in East Palo Alto seems to be the residents here cant find or cant afford the parking so what they do is they go across the bridge and they park in palo alto. Now the temporary solution is going to be a ban on overnight parking in the palo alto neighborhood. That ban goes into place on september 11th. Now, in a letter to the city of palo alto, the mayor of East Palo Alto takes responsibility four the parking issues that have recently arisen. He also says there needs to be better communication between the two cities in order to resolve these issues but neighbor ruben abrica says the apartment owners may be in the heart of the problem in the way they charge or offer parking to its resident he is. We dont know exactly why all of a sudden, the last year, there has been this incredible upsurge in parking need, because over the years, there have been times when the apartments are full and we have never had this problem. What i have heard from my neighbors, especially the ones down on newell and edgewood and the end of hamilton is that theres trash, theres just a lot of traffic, like a lot of cars blocking things. I believe recently, there have been fees assessed to residents. Im not very privy to that, but i know that during the evening times, when people come home, theres nowhere to park. And so, the only place to go is across the bridge there. Reporter now the mayor of East Palo Alto says that they are continuing their efforts to get more information from the owners of the apartment complex. That would be equity residential. In the meantime, residents on both sides of the bridge are going to be waiting to find out what the final solution will be and if its fair to both sides. There have man been major earthquakes, including 6. 5 magnitude quakes off the coast of alaska and japan. However, none of these quakes trigger tsunami warnings, but they are a reminder of the 2011 earthquake in japan that sent a tsunami crashing onto the california coast. Images of cars, like you see here, trying to escape to Higher Ground in Half Moon Bay are still fresh on peoples mind. San mateo county says its tsunami Warning System was due for a replacement. The county has installed eight new sirens along the coast. Those will be tested today. Coming up, they are calling it operation chicken lift. Here at lees comics, started selling the dark horse comic version of the star wars this morning. They still have issues on the shelves, the variants, the one that had the unique covers, those are all sold out, still maybe ten or a dozen copies so far. One thing you will notice is, of course, said right here, based on george lucas original rough draft screenplay, based on a creation of 1974 script and you will notice its called the star wars not star wars, what the 1977 blockbuster was called. When you turn to page one, the first thing you notice, it does not start anything out like the original movie. Instead of being on Princess Leias rebel starship, it starts on the moon. The fourth moon of utapa, sway great moon, if you have been, the third one is better, the fourths not bad. Heres something else. Luke skywalker, not that whiny kid trying to escape, he is a grown man who actually, i dont know, looks a little bit like george lucas, he is a general who is fighting against the empire, which is in part led by this guy and that is darth vader. Notice he does not have the helmet. And if you look over to the left, he looks a little bit like leo dicaprio. Right there you can see some of the characters are different. They do have light sabers, but they are not light sabers, not called that. They are called laser swords. We understand in later issues, it is not just the weapon of a jedi and storm troopers actually get to use them as well in later issues. Down the line, we also learn that han sole slow green, actually part smuggler, flying the millennium falcon and jeed day, a combination of han solo and obiwan ken nobody business the mind of george lucas what he had planned before coming out with the movie. I was interested in it, george lucas before the movie. After the last few movies came out, i was skeptical about star wars stuff, but this one i have been looking forward to interesting to see how the storyline continues, how everything changes. I think for me, any ways, making sure it is consistent, that there hasnt been any real changes with, i guess the mythos of the characters. More than 1,000 rescued chickens are on their way to the east coast today, where they are going to be put up for adoption. This is video of the hens from the animal place sanctuary, which is based in grass valley. The hens are from a california egg farmer who said the animals had outlived their usefulness and were going to be slaughtered. The sanctuary has arranged for about 1100 of the birds to be flown to upstate new york, where they will be distributed to other Animal Rescue groups. Operation chicken airlift takes flight tonight at 5 00. Hopefully they wont have a bumpy ride. Hopefully the skies will be clear. Lets get a look that the forecast with meteorologist rob mayeda in for christina. Nice weather head off to the east, flying over the rim fire. Watching the smoke from that causing an air quality warning across tuolumne county, the latest update a relatively good one, 80 containment. The size of this fire continues to be quite remarkable, the fourth largest in state history, more than 237,000 acres. What does that look like if it was, lets say, superimposed over the bay area. This is what the map would look like, fremont, the start of the sunol grade, east of mount hamilton, south of san jose and morgan hill, over toward mountain view. You can see the footprint of this amazingly large fire if it had been in the south bay. So we are talking about a very large area affected there, smoke and ash, unfortunately, heading up toward lake tahoe and reno. Mid70s the north bay, also out toward the trivalley, temperatures running cooler than yesterday because the seabreeze is continuing to ramp on up. We will see it locally gusty around sfo during the day today as the system passing by to the north for now keeps us with some gusty onshore winds and that strong seabreeze keeping our temperatures in check through thursday. Then for the weekend, winds are going to start to pick up a little bit here out of the north. That is going to clear out our skies, warm things up, 90s inland, 70s and 80s out by the beaches by the time we get into friday and saturday. 79 today in san jose, low to middle 80s south of downtown, around the trivalley, see highs in the mid80s, some lower 80s around walnut creek. 70s closer to oakland, 68 in san francisco, low 80 ez into the north bay. So, mild and breezy next two days but gray, to really notice the change. As soon as that seabreeze stops, temperatures going to vault upward, we go into friday and saturday. Right now, saturday looks to be the hottest day 98 degrees in the south bay valleys and east bay valleys and hanging onto the low 90s to the beginning of next week. Marla .
