This that has had so many setbacks over the years. Caltrans just updated us and basically told us that everything is looking good on this project with the overnight construction and demolition of the old bridge connected to the new eastern portion of the bay bridge. Now, one of the critical areas is the grinding of the asphalt leading to the toll plaza. New asphalt will be laid down. Everywhere you look this morning, heavy equipment out there on the road since the closure last night at 8 00. Now, some of the last work on the 6 had 6. 4 billion span, thats whats going on, designed to be more seismically safe before it can open up. 32 rods have failed earlier this year but the fix is holding. It actually threatened the september 3rd opening. Today though, on the approach, 1,000foot section is being removed piece by piece. Caltrans again saying everything going according to plan. The demolition of that original 1,000footlong westbound approach onto the bridge, they can put in the temporary bike path connector, that is on track. The work at the island, the work to prepare the road decks, that is on track. And so far, the grinding and the paving, that has been all on track. And thats the work were going to be seeing for at least the next 24 hours. Reporter here is a look above that yorba buena island transition, a huge change for drivers. Eventually that scurve will be completely gone, where drivers coming from San Francisco will exit and be parallel with the upper deck. No more driving in that cage like we are used to. Again, today, grading, demolition and paving all on schedule, but of course, one of the big things that drivers had to deal with all of this is the closure of the bay bridge and all the ramps leading to t more on how that is affecting traffic now, mike inouye. How is it looking out there . A lot of folks prepared. Wed lot of time, of course that lead team. A lot of folks made those alternate plans. Despite that, we still had some backups, the eastshore freeway. In fact, choppers over the scene, folks jammed up here going westbound 80, north to south on your map, but this is as youre coming through berkeley and heading down toward the berkeley curve. Look how jammed it is. The deal, the bottom of your screen, see as they cone off one of the lanes, around powell, folks know the shell gas station, deputys over there on the other side of the freeway, thats where you lose the lane. Thank you, chopper. They are showing it to you, where the bottleneck is, backed up toward that racetrack, Golden Gate Fields down to this point. And then continuing toward the berkeley curve. We look at the map, you saw how slow it is there. Some folks heading down toward the maze in oakland and the rest to of the east bay had to deal with that. Also, berkeley back in full section today, a lot of faculty and students, of course, heading there for session. To the top of the screen, we have that Richmond Center fell bridge, the bay bridge in the middle of your screen again closed, the alternate to the north has been very busy, west 580, san raffaele site, showing traffic coming back up into the 50s, very tough through that area heading to 101, 101 itself okay south through san rafael and into the city. Give you the maps, show the other alternates to the south, san mateo and dumbarton bridge, heavily traveled, moving smoothly right now, show you the foster city side of that san mateo bridge, folks off that high rise, packed in solid going back 10, 15 Miles Per Hour on average much of the morning commute. Right now, thinning out quite a bit, still, a good volume of traffic what we expected to see dumbarton bridge heavier than we thought for 84, moving nicely as well. A couple options, take a look at video that we have from the b. A. R. T. System. B. A. R. T. Trains were running, no delays reported there in fact, running nger trains with more capacity there. Great news if you can get a parking space. The issue is for those overnight trains and especially this through this morning commute, park sag premium as it is when we send folks to the b. A. R. T. System. You can get on the trains, just cant get a parking spot still an issue tomorrow as well. The same thing for the ferry system. We didnt see any delays for the ferry system, a great option, beautiful view as you come in toward San Francisco from any of those routes, again, parking is at a premium, folks, you have to get there early, even though we didnt see too much drama as far as the line goes. The ticket problems with were a problem, maybe prepurchase or bring the clipper card. My grandfather says, leave early or be late. Thank you, mike. Later today, we will find out what will happen to the old eastern span. The metropolitan Transportation Commission will hold a News Conference to outline the demolition process. Its going to take about three years to completely dismantle the span there are a lot of differences between the old span and the new one. The most highly touted, the new spans safety and ability to withstand an earthquake. It is expected to have better lighting with lenses focused on keeping the bridge well lit. Of course, when the bridge reopens, the decks will be side by side with some spectacular views of the bay. The new span is expected to have a lifespan of 150 years. Nbcbayarea.
