questions unanswered about the continued use of race as a factor in deciding who gets into college. san jose police right now looking for a group of suspected gang members who attacked and robbed a couple. an attack that happened during the very first week. a major crackdown focusing on gang violence. bob riddell is live. officers are getting ready to talk. >> reporter: john, news conference happening in just under an hour at san jose police. what happened yesterday illustrates the point that even as officers try to up the number of foot patrols they have on the street, they can't be everywhere all the time. yesterday afternoon a group of suspected gang members attacked and robbed a couple in a neighborhood near story and king taking the woman's purse, attacking the man when he tried to intervene sending the man and woman to the hospital. police are still looking for the attackers who they believe are part of a gang. now this attack taking place just as sjpd was upping its presence on the street. david madrid spoke to us. he works to keep kids out of gangs. he believes that while the police gang suppression tactics are well intentioned, he thinks if a short term solution doesn't help, the police need to involve the community. kids will be continued to be sucked into these violent groups of people. >> they're getting younger and younger. they're angrier. they're looking for something. they're finding it on the streets. we do need the police. we need their help. we need their presence, but we also need our community to step up. we need to take back our homes. >> just this past friday sjpd announced it would be putting extra officers on the street this summer to suppress gang violence. their plan is roughly 40 extra officers during the week during the month of june. an extra 64 officers during the week during the month of july. this is also to try to stop the homicide rate which is not looking good this year. 25 murders so far within the city where is edward snowden. the former nsa contractor who released u.s. secrets had been booked on a flight to cuba. an nbc producer said he never showed up for that flight that took off from moscow this morning. snowden arrived in russia yesterday from hong kong. he's been in hiding for several weeks as he faces espionage charges. snowden had applied for asylum in ecuador, iceland and possibly other countries. south africa's president, the president there says doctors are doing everything to help the former leader, the former south african president, we should say, nelson mandela. he remains in critical condition at the hospital with a reoccurring lung infection. this marks the fourth time since back in december that the 94-year-old has been in the hospital. >> happening now, opening statements are underway in the murder trial of george zimmerman. a jury of six women will decide the fate of the 29-year-old former neighborhood watch volunteer who has pleaded not guilty to second degree murder. zimmerman says he shot 17-year-old trayvon martin in self-defense during an altercation last year. the martin family and his family were there. attorneys were asked to leave the courtroom in accord dance with the law that bars possible witnesses from hearing the testimony of other witnesses. the trial is expected to last up to four weeks. an overnight fire breaks out in a south bay trailer park completely destroying a home there. the sunny vail fire department arrived on scene about 3:00 this morning to find the back half of a trailer camper just covered in flames. you can see it on the cell phone video there. it was tough out there. a downed power line forcing firefighters to keep their distance as they sprayed water all over it. the battalion chief telling nbc bay area that they put the fire out in 20 minutes. no one was inside. no word on what caused the fire. we now know the name of the woman who died when her van plunged into the san francisco bay. she has been identified as 60-year-old deborah crenshaw of san francisco. crenshaw, one of several people in the vehicle when it went into the water from the marina green on friday afternoon. everyone else escaped. it's still unclear why the van drove over the embankment into the bay in the first place. >> san jose police said it is right now on the lookout this morning for a jewelry thief who hit a woman with his car as he escaped. police say the man had been looking at rings at done roberto jewelers in east ridge mall. this happened last night. an employee asked to see his i.d., he grabbed one of the rings and then he took off. the employee chased him out into the parking lot. that's where police say the suspect actually hit her with his car as he sped off. she was hit in the leg but she [ female announcer ] just one swap a day helps keep the calories away. yoplait. it is so good. welcome back. the u.s. postal service is looking for mail carriers right now. it's the first time in 20 years it's needed new workers in the bay area. >> a lot of job opportunities out there. kristie smith is joining us in san jose. she's at the job fair. i'm sure a lot of people out there looking for employment, kristie. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, john and marla. these are real jobs. the pay is 15 bucks an hour. if all goes well you could be out there delivering mail in as little as two weeks. even though the postal service has struggled in recent years, they say there is still a need for letter carrier assistants. that is basically the word for a temporary mail delivery person. so two sessions this morning in san jose had job seekers lining up at the processing and distribution center on lundy center to walk candidates through the online application process. this is the first time they've done such massive recruiting of temporary positions that could lead to a full-time job. a lot of it they say is because of attrition. san jose loses about 20 mail carriers each month. the postal service proposed cutting saturday service and they closed post offices in part because of competition from online businesses, but they say there is still a specific need. >> so we've lost 25% of our mail volume and with that goes volume. however, whether it's one piece or whether it's seven pieces, it still needs to be delivered and it still needs a person to deliver it. >> how important is it to get this? >> very important because this is an important job. it's a government job so to get -- once you get in, you're pretty much in. >> reporter: now about 250 of the 500 jobs will be right here in san jose. the rest are throughout northern and central california. there is a physical requirement to the job. you'll be up on your feet quite a bit. there are two more sessions today, one at 1:00, then at 2:30. and you can also see there, they've got the sign out. if you can't make it today you can apply online. kristie smith, nbc bay area news. christie, thank you. using electronic devices for the duration of a flight might soon be a reality but it will take a while. the faa is considering relaxing rules. that would mean you could keep your tablet and ereader on when taking off and also when landing. as you probably know, right now you must power off below 10,000 feet. as for your cell phone, most likely that will have to be kept off. a final decision on the matter has been pushed back to september. okay. it has been days since the fed said the party was over for wall street. years of easy money, low interest rates will come to an end. >> yet, scott mcgrew investors still hung over. >> good morning to you. yeah, who would figure an entire week later we'd still be dealing with this, but we are on wall street. the markets down this morning. they started 180 points on the dow to the negative at the beginning. we continue to see this hangover from the fed. now we do figure gas prices will continue to drop. that's because the american dollar is getting stronger. with the fed saying it's going to stop its easy money policies come fall, that's driven the dollar up. remember, oil is purchased in dollars worldwide. it takes fewer strong dollars to buy a barrel of oil than weak dollars so that price goes down. then add to that the economy sort of puttering along and, in fact, we're several months away from another blend switch so the world respected mcgrew formula says gas prices will fall. the mcgrew formula, only a guess, but so far we're on the right track. back to you. >> and we will back that mcgrew formula. he's always on track, scott. thank you very much. brad pitt, zombies, superman clearly no match for a group of very nice monsters. same device during niagara falls last year. other things to look at this weekend was this, the super moon. star gazers all over the world will look at it in the biggest, brightest moon. it's over jerusalem's old city. this is what it looked like in the bay area at the chabeau observatory. it's when it passes closer to the earth than normal. it appears 14% larger. even though it's cloudy, you might want to check out the super moon tonight. it's no longer full but it's super. the next one won't come around until next summer. >> very romantic, enchanting, all of the above. christina lorenz is here to tell us the clouds will make it difficult. >> indeed. great looking day shaping up. temperatures are really mild out there even with the showers that came through. i want to show you this last picture because they are starting to dry out at this point over the bay bridge. let's get right to your temperatures, 63 in nevada, 66 degrees in sunny vail. you can go outside. you don't need a jacket at this point. we don't have anymore heavy rainfall. the steadiest rain is coming through the north bay right now. this, too, will subside as we head through the next couple of hours. i'm watching this bhach. mod der rit pockets of rainfall up there. here's what we're working with as we head through tonight and our next significant round of rain comes through. we're expecting it starting about 11:00 p.m. really going to hit the coast line first and start to move into the south bay as we head throughout the morning hours. count on a slick drive to work tomorrow morning. we'll meet back here at 11:00. track being showers on the radar. very dry 2013 so far. we could pick up anywhere between a quarter of an inch to an inch of new rainfall. another drop in the bucket in san jose. that could bring our totals up to a quarter of an inch. east bay, 1/4 of an inch. also expecting quite a bit, generous readings along the peninsula. we could pick up between 1/4 inch to 1/2 inof of rain. up to an inch of rainfall. talking about record levels. when it comes to accumulations, we hardly ever get any rain in the month of june so, yeah, easily breaking those records. now here's where it gets interesting, guys. as we get into the end of the week we have a rapid warmup headed our way. temperatures will quickly jump into the 90s. sunday, closer to the century mark. it will get hot. the focus will shift from the wet weather over to the dry, dangerous fire conditions. yeah, never gets boring. over to you guys. >> she's always a busy lady. we like the way she covers it. the is expected to announce it will be affiliated with the bowl starting in 2014. this means every year a big ten team will play a pac-12 team in the bowl game. right now the hunger bowl game is played in the at&t park. it will move to the 49ers stadium in 2014. okay. so we'll call it a low light from yesterday's giants/marlins game. at that i can a look at this. dad misses the foul ball and kid's not
