Late tonight we saw two suvs and a Police Escort leaving the hospital. We dont know for sure if Speaker Nancy Pelosi was inside, but she was spotted arriving at the hospital late this afternoon, to be by her husbands side. It was just before 3 00 am this morning, when paul pelosi was attacked in his Pacific Heights home. The suspects try to tie mr. Pelosi up. Somehow he managed to dial 911 when the suspect wasnt paying attention. Hes going to wait for his wife, he advised his name is david, and he is not a friend. Police rushed to the home for a welfare check. And then when dispatcher who took the call is being recognized for acting on her instincts, sensing something was wrong. At eight this evening, police chief bill scott explained what police saw when someone opened the door. So they observed mr. Pelosi and david, each with one hand on a single hammer. Police gave commands to both men to pull away the hammer. So he immediately violently attacked mr. Pelosi with hammer. The suspect was tackled by police and taken into custody. Chief scott was emotional, explaining that Public Servant families should feel safe. They dont sign up for this, to be harmed, and it is wrong, and everybody should be disgusted about what happened this morning. District attorney jenkins is charging him with elder abuse and assault with a deadly weapon. Anytime anyone is harmed not just as a leader, but likely in this country, it is extremely disturbing. Also disturbing for the president of the United States, speaking about the attack on paul pelosi during a Midterm Campaign event in pennsylvania. Enough is enough is enough. Every person of good conscience needs to clearly and unambiguously stand up against the violence, regardless what youre ethics are. The suspect is still in the hospital. We are learning more about the suspect in this case, we spoke with his estranged family in canada and tracks down his last known address in berkeley. Alyssa joins us from the pelosi residence in San Francisco. Alyssa . As cheryl mentioned, San Francisco police told us david depape is still in the hospital, but he will be booked on felony charges. Police have not shared a motive yet. He was shouting out where is nancy, while he was still inside the house. San Francisco Police say 32 yearold david depape forced his way into the home through the back door and eventually violently assaulted paul pelosi with a hammer. David depape will face felony charges including attempted homicide and elder abuse. David depapes family told us he was born in canada and came to the United States 20 years ago. Our Investigative Unit was at his last known address when fbi agents arrived. Neighbors in the area saw him more recently. Hes never approached me or my partner at all, but ive just seen him helping out around the house with yardwork. These neighbors also recognized him from this photo shared with us from the San Francisco chronicle. I didnt know him personally. Ive seen him passing, thats it. They dug up posts on sites hes to operate, which showed someone who had sometimes contradictory views. Most were taken down, but one was still up where he rents about the 2020 election, and expressed antisemitic views. Recently his posts have leans toward the far right extremism. Police say they cannot share the motive publicly, but do believe the attack was intentional. Its been quiet, except for a woman who drug buy to leave flowers and words of healing for the family. Weve been outside the home all evening, weve not seen anyone enter or exit, but San Francisco police have been standing watch all evening. San Francisco Police did say any questions about security at the pelosi home should be directed to police. Weve reached out for comment but have not heard back yet. Reaction from washington has been swift, Vice President harris calling it an extreme act of violence. We are looking at a time in our country where there is so much discourse that is fueled by hate and division. I know the pelosis, i strongly believe that each one of us have to speak out against hate, we have to speak out against violence, obviously. Jackie spears said the attack brought back memories of january 6. So this is their effort to run people out of Elective Office that dont believe what they believe in. They will fail, because we will fight back. We are not going to tolerate the kind of violence that has been promoted by this far right fringe group. Across the aisle sentiment, Mitch Mcconnell tweeted he is horrified and disgusted by the reports that paul pelosi was assaulted in his home last night. Some people consider this a oneoff, in fact it is part of a pattern, it is a growing pattern, in how people feel about these events. It is a manifestation of this, that it is much deeper, we have entirely polarized a generation, people not talking to each other, thinking we have to work things out violently. Thats a problem. If you are an elected official anyone to run for public office, you have to factor in the potential that some nut out there may very well try his or her best to eliminate you.
