An east bay family is outraged that the man convicted in the death of their son is out of prison after just six years. They say the reduced sentence is the result of a political favor. Marianne favro talked to that family tonight and joins us with their reactions. I know you said they are terribly upset. Reporter and theyre very frustrated. The santos family says if the man convicted in the deadly attack of their son didnt have connection was former governor schwarzenegger, he would still be in prison tonight. This is what Esteban Nunez looks like now after serving six years behind bars for his role in a deadly attack. He walked out of prison today a free man. But the parents of the victim say theyll never be free. Its not any different from any other day that we come out here. Its same thing. Every time we come out here, my son is in the ground. Reporter today they visited the Lafayette Cemetery where their son luis is buried. Just felt sick to my stomach. Reporter kathy santos remembers the y she learned former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had dramatically reduced the sentence for nunez. In october, 2008, nunez, who is the son of former state Assembly Speaker fabian nunez, took part in the stabbing death of luis santos after a party in san diego. A judge sentenced him to 16 years in prison. The former governor, who is Close Friends with the former Assembly Speaker reduced that sentence to seven years in a move many called a political favor. Its decisions schwarzenegger made on his last day in august, a decision that aloud Esteban Nunez to be reunited with his family in sacramento tonight. I feel like, well, esteban is probably out celebrating with his family tonight. This is where we come to be with our family. Reporter luis santos would have turned 30 this year. His mother says he was the ultimate people person who loved kids. He had more friends than anybody i know. Reporter kathy and fred santos say they were blind sided by the governors decision to commute estebans sentence. They tried to fight it in court, but lost. Its not what crime you commit, its who do you know. Who, you know what access do you have to people in high places. Reporter the nunez family released this statement saying, in part, we continue to grieve over the losses related to our sons involvement in this tragic incident and pray daily for gods healing grace. Our son has paid his debt to society. But kathy santos sees it much differently. She says she cant forgive Esteban Nunez for killing her son. There is now a new law on the books that requires the governor to give ten days notice to the d. A. And victims families before deciding to reduce a sentence. Contessa fitts sister nicole was found dead on friday in San Francisco. As she tells lili chan, she is doing her best to stay positive. Im really scared. I dont know where she is and who she is with. And what is happening. Reporter its been just over 24 hours since San Francisco police announced 2yearold Arianna Fitts was missing. Her mother, 32yearold nicole fitts was found dead on friday. Nicoles sister contessa says she and nicole were close, despite living two hours apart. My sister had a great spirit. If anyone ever needed anything, she would always give. She would always give if she could. Almost to the point where if she had nothing for herself. Reporter sources inside sfpd tell nbc bay area news nicoles body was found in mclaren park. Thats less than five miles away from the best buy where she would have celebrated her oneyear work anniversary today. At this time, police are investigating her death as a homicide. Contessa says her sister was well liked. I cant imagine. I just cant imagine there is no i cant imagine any reason why anyone would ever want to like i said, she did nothing but gave to people. I just it boggles my mind who could want to hurt her. Reporter how likely is it that arianna is with her father . I dont know. I honestly dont know. Reporter arianna was reported missing last week, but was last seen in late february. I want to believe that she is okay. Well, three people were killed in separate shootings in oakland this weekend, all within 24 hours of each other. Just three hours later, the man was shot to death on 40th avenue near international boulevard. Police are not immediately identifying those victims. We had a pretty rainy weekend, though i dont think a lot of people complain about that. This late in the rainfall season, to see more than an inch of rain in the east valley, that was a welcome sight even if it did fall on the weekend. Low clouds around San Francisco. Temperatures in the 50s. Some misty skies around parts of the bay area, including parts of dublin. 55 degrees and still mostly cloudy into san jose. Temperatures in the mid50s right now. But a lot of the moisture that was right on top of us as we woke up this morning from about 7 00 a. M. Through 2 00 is now shifted down towards the central coast. And that is where most of the widespread rain will be. Notice were still seeing a few isolated showers moving from north to south. And the shortterm forecast between now and tomorrow mornings commute still brings in a few of the scattered showers. From the north bay and along the peninsula for the morning. And then for the afternoon, one more slight chance of showers across the hill tops here, up towards the north bay and over towards mt. Hamilton and diablo range. The heating of the day, you may see a stray shower popping up. But the overall forecast for the valleys is trending dryer monday into tuesday. So the morning low clouds. A little drizzle in a few spots. Temperatures in the low 50s. Around lunchtime, well see clouds building over the hills. And our temperatures running a little warmer with a little more sunny breaks at times for your monday afternoon. Highs in the mid to upper 60s around san jose. Still fairly cool for San Francisco with your highs in the upper 50s to the low 60 theres. Mid60s around the north bay. Best chance for seeing a few showers coming off the hilltops could be in napa and santa rosa. And around the trivalley numbers in the mid60s. The sevenday forecast shows the end of the week is quite a different story. For as tomorrow night should see comfortable conditions. A little on the cool side. Some sprinkles possible with the low clouds. But not the rain delay type variety stuff we saw this weekend. With the giants game. The next three day, north bay begins to see the rain from that second storm as early as wednesday afternoon. All locations seeing a cooldown as we head into thursday with our next chance of widespread rain arriving for thursday morning. And speaking of that system, well be watching the system with supply of cooler air with it. So because its bringing colder air, its not going to have as much moisture to work with as it races through the bay area mainly from Late Wednesday into early thursday morning. Our rainfall projections of the system not measured by the inch. It looks like well see maybe a quarter inch to perhaps up to a half inch in some of the weather spots in the north bay. The good news with the cold air is the snow that it could bring for the sierra right now. Looks like perhaps up to a half foot in the snowier spots about 5,000 feet. Cold air that should drop our snow levels temporarily. Close to 4500 feet. Thats the reason why our high temperatures are going to drop into the low 50s and 60s. For next weekends outdoor plans look a lot nicer as High Pressure builds in. You get that needed midweek rain and sierra snow. And then if you like spring weather, it should come back just in time for friday and next weekend. You can see the highs returning to the low 70s starting friday. But for kids its known as night terror. The childs eyes are open, but you cant wake them up until the episode is over. Its like a light bulb. And then she suddenly goes hi, mommy, hi, daddy. Reporter carol and her husband tim say they panicked when their daughter madeline had her first night terror. She was just 14 months old. It sounded like she was in pain. She would sit up and twist her whole body around. Reporter they tried waking her up. Before she would have the night terror. But sometimes it would be too late. Then they tried the lilly sleep guardian. The vibrating device goes under the childs mattress and is connected to an app that learns the childs sleep pattern. When you put your child to bed, you hit the bedtime. Reporter dr. Ring says about four million American Children suffer from these episodes. He says lilly helps night terrors by 80 . The abnormal sleep that happens before a night terror occurs. If you can get the child out of that sleep pattern, you can prevent the night terror from happening. Dont stay up too late, girls. Reporter other doctors say there is no quick fix for night terrors, and parents should try getting their child on a schedule first. Now lilly does not seem to work for other sleep. Reporter air was breathing a strange sort of life outside in the plaza. I think its amazing. Reporter even in a city that sees a lot, this sight was certainly smartphone worthy. Ive lived here long enough that nothing shocks me anymore. Reporter not even inflatable rabbits . Inflatable rabbits, thats okay. Reporter try five inflatable white rabbits rising just outside the windows of city hall. What do you say about their city hall the mayor is in there working some where. And there are these huge white inflatable bunnies out front. Reporter well, you can see the rabbits are an art installation by Australian Artist amanda pairer. Five inflatable bunnies made of nylon. The other is thoughtful like the eyeore bunny. Reporter the installation carries a series message about the introduction of nonnative rabbits into australia, which caused havoc. There is a message, an environmental message about considering sort of what we do and the ramifications environmentally. Were looking at probably a light jacket weather, and maybe a little bit of misty skies for few parts of the bay area. But not the heavier rain we saw over the course of the last couple days. Very impressive rain totals considering this month we normally see an inch to inch and a half. We saw precisely that around concord this weekend. Oakland. 84. Really, the numbers that were the most welcome were out towards the trivalley. Livermore, more than the Monthly Average this weekend in just two days. And you can see san jose pretty close to an inch of rain. And morgan hill more than an inch coming down. We will add to that with a midweek storm on the way. Rainfall to date, as we add up the totals especially in livermore and san jose. Boosting the numbers to 104 of average. And overall, from 86 to 104 of average in terms of the rainfall for this time of year. Satellite radar shows you the widespread rain now is transitioning into central and Southern California. Heading towards tomorrow morning. Again, the radar still picking up a few light showers here or there as the air is forced to rise over the peninsula hilltop. Around the north bay. Tomorrow morning, and right around the immediate coast there is a chance of seeing a few light rain showers for the morning. And then for the afternoon well be watching some of the hill tops towards the south bay and especially around the north bay. Could see an isolated shower building across some of the higher peaks for the afternoon. And shutting down as we head towards tomorrow evening. So some low clouds. A little misty skies in some parts of the bay area for the morning. Around noon, well see partly cloudy, still to mostly cloudy skies at times. And temperatures that should be climbing into the 60s for tomorrow afternoon. And trending a lot warmer as we head towards the next weekend. Youre seeing that on the sevenday forecast. Tomorrow mid60s around san jose. Upper 50s to low 60s for San Francisco and the peninsula. North bay santa rosa sack, napa in sonoma. Napa counties around the hills. Could see a few isolated hilltop showers and around the east bay and trivalley, highs in the upper 60s. So for the as game, should be pleasant. Patchy low clouds. As we head towards tuesday and wednesday, we have a mostly dry pattern exception to the rule, the north bay by Late Wednesday afternoon. Begin to see some light rain on approach. Notice the cooldown in temperatures temporarily for thursday, as thursday looks to be at least for the morning the best bet for seeing more widespread rain across the bay area. The Second System that comes in will be on approach. Wednesday night into thursday, its going to be a colder system, which means by virtue of the cooler air, its not going to have as much moisture as the subtropical air. We do think rain totals out of the midweek system likely to stay below a half inch. Higher totals as we head into sonoma county. But that colder air. Snow levels will be much lower. Not near 8,000 feet like we saw this weekend. But perhaps closer to 4,000 to 5,000 feet. So more snow heading towards the sierra where were hopeful we could get maybe another half foot of snow above elevations for 5,000 feet. For thursday. Clearing skies on friday as we transition to another bit of a uturn in the weather here. High pressure quickly building in behind that midweek weather system. So as we approach the end of the week, starting friday, it will pick up as we head into saturday and sunday. Were going to see more sunshine. And temperatures trending warmer. We have been cool over the last few days. Notice friday beginning to see 70s with breezy conditions in the north bay. Saturday and sunday, a few spots, including the north bay and south bay, south of downtown san jose could have a chance of some 80s. And mid70s hanging on to next weekend. So a sevenday forecast to get some much needed rain. Sierra snow, which is good news. And for soccer and Little League and all those outdoor plans for next weekend, hopefully not looking at rainouts like we saw this weekend. Better timing.
