The changes to his immigration policy are smaller, will spare 5 million undocumented immigrants from threat of deportation. Come out of the shadows and get right with the law. Thats what this deal is. Reporter untouched for years, americas outdated languishing immigration system pushed to the breaking point this summer as immigrant children swelled southern borders. Today our immigration system is broken. Everybody knows it. To date president ordered sweeping overhaul of the system. Affecting 5 million people. And the fact is we have an immigrant population in the country we need to embrace. Reporter the president s executive action on immigration will remove threat of deportation for following undocumented immigrants. Those in the country five year, they have children who are u. S. Citizens or legal residents. But they must pass a criminal background check and pay taxes. Republicans claim the president cant do it. And that he is illegally taking steps despite objections. The president said before that he is not, he is sure acting like one. Obama came prepared for that. To those members of congress who question my authority, or question of wisdom of me acting where congress failed. I have one answer. Pass a bill. Reporter Immigration Attorneys say most importantly, the executive action will give parents and children, born in the u. S. , the ability to work legally. Even though they have already been paying taxes for years. The vast majority of people, they are filing taxes. They have tax id. And they are, filing them every year. Reporter while news was joyful for some. Immigration attorneys say still there are millions it wont help. The president said it doesnt provide provisions for health care under obama care. Another thing to note. Because the president acted with executive order the short term fix could be reversed by a future president. Many are reacting tonight. Word may not be enough. Others are optimistic they will be able to stay in america. And contribute to the economy after they finish college. It is good, but not good enough. In a couple years i will be applying for a visa. Expecting good news for people like me too. Now the phone has been ringing off the hook, at legal and immigrant outreach in oakland. People lining up with questions about what the executive order might mean for them. Fielding questions and only expecting to get busier in the days ahead. Several outreach groups will begin seminars to explain who the policies will impact. Estimated 12 million undocumented People Living in the United States right now. Thats the big question, who is in, who is out . What happens to the influx of undocumented children and the Gay Community. And Nanette Miranda from treasure island. Nanette, a lot of gray area here . Reporter a lot of gray area, Gay Community and advocates for immigrants have concerns. While they applaud the president s moves they hoped more people would be included. The Lgbt Community wonders how relationships are defined. Not all states, recognize samesex marriage or same sex parents. Family relationships through marriage or blood, the only way you can, seek recognition or that you can seek status, that will leave out tens of thousand perhaps evens hundreds of thousand of lgbt families. The president made no distinction whether all exclude undocumented immigrant from being eligible or just ones with violent convictions. Concerned because kate kendall says some in the lgbt have turned to crimes to survive on the street. Crimes, victimless, nonviolent should not count against ones ability to be considered. This man wished the president included recent immigrant arrivals. His church one of the first sanctuary churches to take in refugees. Most recently, families and unaccompanied minors fleeing violence in central americas. Stories are horrendous. Stories of rape, extortion, violence. Reporter recent immigrants would not qualify. Im afraid if theyre not included in the immigration, then they will be sent back.
