During the day, Mountain Lions are not so active so people are going about their business. Mountain lions are more active at dawn, dusk and now at night. So thats the time to be nervous. There are signs posted around this neighborhood now warning of sightings. In a parklike area by queens lane in the san mateo hills, residents saw evidence that a Mountain Lion had been by. We woke up yesterday morning. We saw my neighbor saw the carcass of a deer in the open space. It had been partially eaten. And thats really all we saw. Reporter turns out the deer wasnt alone. Animal control took the carcass away and took the fawn away. There was a baby. Took her away to care for her. This is the second sighting of a Mountain Lion in this neighborhood since midweek when one was spotted on friendwood street. There are signs posted in nearby Laurelwood Park warning people a big cat may be on the prowl. A Mountain Lion was captured in mountain view. The bay area puma project thinks the increased activity closer to home may be due to the drought as animals try to find water. And i am thinking, oh, my goodness. Reporter Marilyn Williamson is keeping a closer eye on her prizewinning dog holly so she doesnt end up as a Mountain Lions dinner. I used to turn the dog loose out in the back here but im not going to do it for a while because im afraid that the lion might be back here. Reporter for those away for the Holiday Weekend, neighbors with pets will find some friendly advice on their doors. We left a note for them on their door to be careful not to leave their cats out so they dont get attacked by the Mountain Lion. Reporter the threat of a Mountain Lion in the neighborhood sent one Barbecue Party indoors. Even though misty was on guard it just got too uncomfortable on the deck. They got really scared the other ladies. And they said they didnt want to stay outside because they were afraid that maybe the Mountain Lion, if its out there, could smell the meat grilling. Reporter animal experts say if you see a Mountain Lion, dont run away. Face it. Make lots of noises and make yourself appear bigger and maybe throw things at it. Drivers in San Francisco this evening cant believe that their good fortune. 280 back open northbound ahead of schedule. Caltran said they had no snags. The first cars drove down interstate 280 before the sun even went down catching drivers like jason ing by surprise. Great. Im glad that its open early. Reporter a relief to drivers trying to move between the 101 280 interchange in downtown San Francisco over the long Holiday Weekend. Its a pain going through 101 to get home. But 280 im glad 280 is open, though. Reporter by this afternoon, caltrans had finished most of the work to replace a 40yearold cise mick safety hinge. It was down to the finishing details striping and cleanup. Caltrans reopened it ten hours before the 5 00 a. M. Monday deadline. We were able to accelerate the schedule. Everything has worked fine. We had no problems, no accidents, no mechanical breakdowns. He says they took practices from the recent hinge replacement on the southbound lanes. 60,000 commuters use northbound 280 each day. The end of a Holiday Weekend meant lots of traffic around the bay area. Taking a live look at 80 where traffic does seem to have cleared up quite a bit. Still of headlights throughout. The max exodus from the beach snarled up traffic for miles. Heres how it looked as hundreds of beachgoers packed on to the highway northbound. Traffic was backed up the entire trip over the hill and all along connecting 1 back to watsonville. No reported crashes causing all of this traffic. Just a lot of people on their way back home. California dui arrests are higher in this years july 4th holiday avoid campaign. Chp officers arrested nearly 1200 drivers around the state since thursday evening. Thats up 22 from last year. In santa clara, authorities made 33 arrests. Daley city report 13 arrests in san mateo county. Firefighters are fighting back flames. The victim lost control of his bulldozer and it rolled over while constructing fire lines. He was air lifted to the hospital. The terrain near the lake is very steep and rugged. The monticello fire has burned more than 6400 acres. Its only 30 contained at this time. It forced the closure of highway 128 and earlier caused the evacuation of about 40 homes. People grabbed what they could when they left. Hooked up the pickup. She got the grandkids and a bunch of our clothes and important papers and documents. Loaded up and told us to get out. So we moved out. Those evacuations have been lifted. Nearby campgrounds are still closed. Three bay area crews have joined the firefight as well. The alameda county, fremont and albany Fire Departments sent about 17 firefighters ers ters. Lets check in with meteorologist rob mayeda who is watching the fire dangers and the temperatures, too. Hot and dry. Temperatures close to 100 degrees around the trivalley. 98 in livermore. You see concord, 95. San rafael, 88 degrees. Another day of hot temperatures in the valleys. In the meantime now, were watching that fog turn very thick around San Francisco. So your morning commute being impacted by that across the golden gate bridge. Like driving through the clouds. Were seeing some of that, too, into oakland. Reduced visibility at times for the morning commute. The other thing isnt the low clouds but the increasing chance of seeing mountain thundershowers. This moisture for now toss something thundershowers out towards the sierra. We have to watch for lightning strikes. We could see spot fires from this up in the high country. And close to home around the bay area, youll notice the mid and high level clouds coming in from time to time. We saw a little of this around sunset tonight. Tomorrow afternoon and especially come tuesday, some of the hilltops here in the north bay could see a slight chance of isolated thunder. Well have a look at that and a big cooldown ahead in your sevenday forecast coming up in just a few minutes. Today does mark a very somber anniversary. It was one year ago that asiana flight 214 crashed at sfo. Three teenaged passengers were killed in that crash. Another 187 people were hurt. Ntsb investigators released the report on the crash last month. Heres what they found that the crew mishandled the descent of the boeing 777 and one of the pilots accidentally deactivated a system designed to regulate the planes air speed. The plane clipped a sea wall just short of the runway and broke into pieces and caught fire. The crash was the first time a boeing 777 was involved in a fatal crash. On tuesday, San Franciscos supervisors are expected to honor airport employees who helped to rescue other children from that crash. Its right here. Hes swimming. Get out of the water. Keep swimming. Terrifying moments here for one man. He was swimming for his life. The man was attacked by a juvenile great white shark in Manhattan Beach just south of los angeles this weekend. Today that swimmer met with one of the men who rescued him from the ocean. Reggie ku mar was there for that reunion. He first met hoot yesterday, moments after helping the 50yearold out of the water seen in this photo at Manhattan Beach. I heard him out there and heard screaming. People were leaving. I thought someone has to get him. Reporter hoot heard robles screams for help from this rental tent where he works. I grabbed one of them. Paddled out. Wed gotten you on to a surfboard. Then there were probably like six of us pushing you in. You can see hoot on the far left in this Photo Holding two paddle boards. Robles shared his story of survival with the 19yearold college stunt. The longdistance swimmer is upset with the fishermen who hooked the juvenile great white and didnt cut the line right away. I saw that shark just eyeball to eyeball just you and i like exactly the same distance. And it came in and bit me. Reporter robles showed us his injuries. He is recovering from skin lacerations under his right arm and a finpunctured artery in hi thumb. I am so fortunate you were nearby. Pretty amazing pictures. The beach was back open today. Police tonight are on the hunt for more suspects after three bikers were shot this morning near a very popular motorcycle rally in hollister. It happened about 10 00 this morning at a gas station near downtown hollister. Officers made one arrest a short time after the shooting, but they believe the others were involved. It all stemmed from a fight between two biker clubs last night. The conditions of the victims are not yet known. Today was the final day of that threeday hollister rally. The family of a woman punched several times by chp officer plans to file a lawsuit this week. Relatives marlene say she suffered from multiple injuries after this. They also say her civil rights were violated. Theyve not named who they will be suing but family members say this cell phone video shows an officer repeatedly hitting her on the side of a busy los angeles freeway on tuesday. Her daughter spoke yesterday about that beating that was caught on tape. Hit her over and repeatedly and repeatedly over. She wasnt even putting up a fight. Today was the first day i was finally able to see her and talk to her. I just thank god that shes alive. Reporter her family scheduled a press conference for tomorrow as well. Police Officials Say shes in a having a mental evaluation right now. The officer on the tape has not been identified but he is now on administrative leave. And a developing story in the mideast. A palestinian american teenager who was beaten by Israeli Police has now been released from custody. His parents who are visiting jerusalem from their home in tampa, florida, are outraged over the incident. But theyre focused on getting their son proper medical care. For the khdeir family theres some relief. Their son is back home, hurt but thankful to be alive. The palestinian American Family says they are considering legal action against the Israeli Government when they return back to the United States later this month. Ayman mohyeldin, nbc news, jerusalem. New tsa rules will mean tighter security for u. S. Bound travelers from some airports. Passengers at undisclosed airports zi s will have to physy turn on Electronic Devices when passing through security. Devices that dont power up will not be allowed through. It may also trigger additional screening. The tsa is also seeing a surge in this relatively new hard to detect weapon. Take a look at these. Credit card knives. When you open them, part of the credit card becomes a blade. The rest of it then folds into a handle. When its closed it just resembles a thick credit card. The knives are often priced about 15. So far this year the tsa has confiscated about 500 credit card knives. Thats about 20 per week. Only a small fraction of data mined by the nsa actually comes from legitimate targets. Thats the conclusion of a new report by tthe washington pos. 90 of nsa data comes from socalled bystanders that are cut up in nsa surveillance. And about half of those people by the way are americans. The report also found legally obtained data from foreign targets often contained valuable intelligence that includes Nuclear Secrets and hacker information. Congression ioional leaders under pressure to address the issue at the mexican border. 90,000 undocumented immigrants from Central America are expected to arrive this year in the u. S. The Obama Administration is asking for 2 billion to secure the border and deal with children that are already in this country illegally. There are no guarantees that congress will be willing to write that check. However, officials in border states want something done to stop immigrants from flooding across the border. I dont think youll be able to address it until you put the resources there and thats boots on the ground. President obama is visiting texas this week but has not scheduled a visit to the border. A few patches of fog to the north. Temperatures currently mostly 50s to low 60s around the peninsula from palo alto to san jose. But the view in San Francisco, the golden gate bridge, a lot of fog for you right now. And that is a sneak preview of tomorrow mornings commute. If you have to travel across the midspan of the golden gate or toward the san mateo bridge or bay bridge, you may want to plan some extra time which may include a little drizzle at times through the coast. A cloudy start for San Francisco down the coastline just like we had today. Inland valley temperatures as early as lunchtime tomorrow. Soaring into the low 90s by livermore and pleasanton. San jose in the 80s. Really the trivalley and areas south of downtown san jose that will see those highs soaring into the mid to upper 90s for one more day. Towards Late Afternoon hours, watching more moisture coming away from the sierra from the Desert Southwest which could kick off mountain thundershowers. Especially out towards the north bay on tuesday afternoon. Mainly areas north of Sonoma County as we see the moisture coming in over the bay area. Right now sea breeze ongoing. Thats going to push in low clouds toward hayward and oakland. For the morning well see mostly cloudy skies. Not just from the low clouds but some of this mid and high level cloud cover which has been streaming in from the east. As we wake up tomorrow morning youll have fog and mist around San Francisco and the coast. Also high clouds coming in out of the south and east. You can see the two working together to block out the sun for the first part of the day. Toward the evening, low clouds on the coastline and big thundershowers mainly confined to the sierra for monday evening. As we transition into tuesday, the upper level disturbance is going to ride up towards Northern California and that should make those showers a little more widespread for areas north of santa rosa during the afternoon. Especially towards ukiah. Youll notice this for tuesday afternoon, the showers along the Coastal Range up to the north and areas from truckee northward seeing big thunder for tuesday afternoon. But the bay area is about to get the ocean air congreditioning o overdrive. Much breezier and cooler conditions toward tuesday. In the meantime, one more hot day for inland locations. Theres no end in sight im going to need more time. The iconic redwood trees in Northern California are under an alarming threat. Poachers. They are hacking away the precious timber which can be sold and made into expensive furniture as nbcs Miguel Almaguer reports. They are threatening a natural wonder that so many people work so hard to preserve. Reporter the tallest trees on earth, soaring 400 feet, hug Northern Californias coastline. People come from around the world to see the amazing forest. Reporter to see the mighty majestic redwoods is a once in a lifetime experience. But just off the beaten path so they are doing pretty extreme hiking to get back here. Yep. Reporter these Gentle Giants are being assaulted. Thieves have moved in. They came with a chainsaw. They made their cuts. Reporter massive chunks sliced off by poachers. They are carrying them by hand. Reporter park ranger marshall meek works the national forest. Its the burl part itself that they are looking for because that has this pattern. You can see little parts of that pattern right here. Reporter the knobby protrusions, burls, are crucial to the survival of the tree. The burls ensure the future of the redwood tree. The bud tissue thats in here will sprout a new redwood as soon as that tree is stressed or damaged. Reporter chunks of burl nearly 8 feet tall have been hauled away. This redwood chopped to the ground for its precious timber. This is old growth redwood. Reporter the wood can be valuable, often crafted into artwork and furniture. A slab like this can bring in 10,000. Burl dealer landon bock, who operates a legitimate business, says illegal poachers are destroying a national treasure. They are taking pickup truck loads and trailer loads. And some of these trees theyve dated 3,500 years old. Reporter with more than 20 burl thefts reported recently, rangers are closing down roads, trying to limit access for the poachers. Protecting the park isnt easy. Theres just 12 rangers to cover all of this land. So much ground to cover, theres roughly 1 ranger for every 11,000 acres. The thieves have too much space and too much time to work in. For centuries, the redwoods have survived fire, drought and disease. Now its man who poses the danger. Miguel almaguer, nbc news, Redwood National park. In less than 48 hours another state will be able to sell marijuana legally. Tomorrow as many as 20 shops in washington should receive their license to start selling marijuana. Stores can open the next day if they are ready to do so. Its not clear how many that will be or if theyll have enough pot on hand for the first day of sales. It is definitely exciting, but also a little scary just having that much responsibility to all the eyes are on us. We ourselves only have ten pounds which it will sell out the first day, no doubt about that. It will be a huge endeavor. More than 300 stores will eventually be licensed to sell pot legally in washington state. Residents there voted to legalize the sale of marijuana more than a year and a half ago. Colorado began selling Recreational Marijuana earlier this year. The Affordable Care act is under fire again. This time with a lawsuit brought on by a senator. Ron johnson is challenging a provision that gives subsidies to members of congress and their staff to help pay for health insurance. Tomorrow a federal judge is set to consider the lawsuit which contends the Obama Administration overstepped its authority when it provided these subsidies. This is what johnson said when he filed the suit back in january. Only members of congress and their staff when they lose their employersponsored care will have the ability to have their employers make a tax advantage contribution to the health care plan. Thats the special treatment. Thats completely unfair. Completely inn just. Government attorneys say that johnson cannot show how the subsidies hurt him and they are asking the judge to dismiss the case altogether. The hearing is set for monday in green bay. Hanging in the balance, a recordbreaking 2 billion sale of the los angeles clippers. A new trial is set to start tomorrow. A judge will look at whether Donald Sterlings estranged wife shelley had the authority to negotiate the deal with ballmer. His attorneys filed for a delay in the trial. Towards tuesday morning, things turn a bit more interesting as this upper level disturbance begins to move more toward Northern California kicking off showers toward lake county and me Mendocino County toward ukiah. They may produce some lightning and not enough rain to put ot spot fires. The highest likelihood of that will be toward Mendocino County. But what will also happen tuesday is a strong sea breeze coming in. The marine lay cher her which h squeezed down will expand back up. Close to 1,000 to 2,000 feet which means the trivalley will see a big drop in those temperature comes tuesday. One more hot day to deal with out towards livermore and pleasanton. Highs close to 86 in san jose. 96 in morgan hill. San francisco climbing into the 60s to near 70. Mostly 60s for San Francisco tomorrow. The east bay, oakland, 70 degrees. Big bay bridge series lining up in oakland. Mid60s around game time. 90 in napa. Pleasanton, 96 degrees. Tomorrow should be the hottest day of the week. Big drop, almost 10 degrees cooler tuesday into wednesday. Thursday and friday, temperatures leveling off. The same for livermore. From african serval cats small enough to hide in blades of grass at the naples zoo to aria the black rhino who weighed more than 100 pounds when she was born at the miami zoo.
