Diane, the shooting happened about 2 1 2 miles away from here but in an attempt to escape the gunfire, the driver of the car carrying the two victims came here to east pal totality toe and was able to get into the mcdonalds parking lot on university and bay. Police say of the five people found inside the car here, two were shot. A 21yearold woman and her 2yearold son sitting on her lap when the incident occurred. Both were hit in the legs and a bullet grazed the childs head. The two were taken to the hospital where they are in stable condition and expected to be okay. The shooting happened about 7 45 this evening at the intersection of bay front and willow in menlo park. There was an altercation here on willow road. And when they came up to the intersection, the passenger of the vehicle extended a weapon, we believe a handgun out of the vehicle and shot numerous times at the victim vehicle. Those are the rounds that struck the mother and child in the back seat. Police say multiple shell casings were found at the scene. Police are still investigating the cause of the shooting but say it may be gang related. The only Description Police have of the suspect vehicle is that it is a 2000 dark green fourdoor honda. There were two people inside, both hispanic males. So again, two victims in the shooting, one a 2yearold with a graze wound to the head. Both mother and child are expected to be fine. The issue of gun violence was the focus of two events here today as mothers took to the streets to demand action and a gun buyback event netted hundreds of weapons. I think the recent tragedies in connecticut showed us that no one can stand on the sidelines anymore. This affects everybody. The group is calling for a ban on military style assault weapons and supports universal background checks. For some, the message is personal. Remember that were talking about, were talking about peoples children and my daughter and so many other children that have been killed. Down the peninsula, people lined up by the hundreds to turn in their guns for cash. It was my grandmothers. She gave it to my father. He passed away. I cleaned out his house, and i have a little kid. Each night more lights appear in new and different designs as the artist uses software to manipulate almost two miles of lights. The lights illuminate the north side on the west span, and there are piece a fine art designed to celebrate the bay bridges 75th anniversary. Its not just the Golden Gate Bridge is 75. Its set to be on full display in march with the grand lighting on march 5th. The display is supposed to continue for about two years. So a nonprofit has raised 6 million so far for the display.
