this election offers a very clear choice. steve handlesman joins us live this evening from charlotte with the president's big night. steve? >> liberty and justice for all. >> reporter: a symbol of recovery. arizona's gabby giffords led the pledge and amped up the energy. for the president. he wanted to fire up democrats. but barack obama aimed his speech at undecided voters. >> i'm asking you to rally around a set of goals for your country. goals in manufacturing, energy, education, national security and the deficit. real achievable plans that will lead to new jobs, more opportunities, and rebuild this economy on a stronger foundation. that's what we can do in the next four years. and that is why i am running for a second term as president of the united states. >> reporter: as joe biden likes to brag, bin laden is dead and detroit is alive. >> i met workers in detroit and toledo who feared they'd never build another american car. and today, they can't build them fast enough because we reinvented a dying auto industry that's back on top of the world. >> reporter: looking forward, the president favors keeping education and green energy programs. keeping medicare like it is. and he wants the rich to pay more for that. >> i never said this journey would be easy. and i won't promise that now. yes, our path is harder. but it leads to a better place. yes, our road is longer. but we travel it together. we don't turn back. we leave no one behind. >> reporter: i've done well, he said. and i need to do more. now, nbc's bay area's own political analyst weighed in on the speech tonight. he said president obama took an entirely different approach tonight than his challenger, mitt romney, last week. >> go back and think about romney. romney is saying, listen. it's up to us individuals to do what we can for ourselves. government is best if it stays out of our lives. so we can thrive. if you look at obama tonight, what he is saying is the chain is only as strong as its weakest link. and he's saying government is there to help us. and we need to pull together. entirely different approach tonight. >> now, he went on to say that tonight's speech provides the clearest division in ideology between candidates since 1964, when lyndon johnson defeated barry goldwater. go to nbcbayarea.com to find complete coverage. in other news tonight, it is the harsh reality of the job. kenyon youngstrom becomes the 23rd chp officer to be killed in the line of duty. today, his family, from across the state, united in sacramento. >> september 5th, 2012. >> his wife, parents and children looked on. you see them seated in the front row as his name was read and the memorial bell rang out. hundreds of cadets, chp officers and other law enforcement officials stood at attention to honor to fallen officer's ultimate sacrifice and to pay their respects. he was taken off life support after being shot in the head during a traffic stop on 680, tuesday morning. >> he was what we call blue and gold, which means loyal to the organization. a very, very nice family man. a very, very tragic loss to all of us. >> blue and gold. and the final act of self-sacrifice, the 37-year-old father of four had made prior arrangements to donate his organs. a move officials say could save the lives of as many as eight people and benefit dozens of others. new at 11:00, police are on the hunt for a bay area man believed to have kidnapped his two children and stolen a boat. police believe christopher maffei kidnapped the kids before heading to a yacht harbor and stealing one of the boats. this is a photograph of the boat police say he took. investigators say he previously talked about sailing to mexico. his daughter was last seen wearing a white dress. his son, wearing a spongebob squarepants shirt. so, where is brett olsen? that's the question being asked by deputies near chico and all over the facebook and twitter. he disappeared during an inner tube trip. some friends and others are looking for brett online. george kiriyama is in downtown lafayette with new details for us. >> reporter: there's huge concern for brett olsen here in his hometown. you can see posters have been put up in the windows of many of the downtown businesses. but the biggest push for awareness has been on social media. take a look at this facebook page called let's bring brett home. this was created 48 hours ago. and look at that. close to 66,000 people have joined the page. many of them parents, friends, fellow college students where brett goes to school. as well as thousands of people who don't even know him. twitter has been abuzz of people tweeting and retweeting find brett olsen. there's star power behind the tweets howie mandel and miley cyrus. the message is getting out worldwide. family and friends are ecstatic about this. they hope that more eye balls will bring him home. >> he's someone's brother and someone's son and someone's best friend. you know, it just hits home. >> it's very difficult to have to see it on my facebook page. but i'm also very warmed that it's gotten that big and tweeted. and people are talking about it. >> reporter: now, we just learned olympians kerry walsh and maggie stephans have tweeted out in support. it was a gruesome crime that shook up the bay area. now, the punishment. a suspect is facing 32 years behind bars aftered a midding to being part of a group that gang-raped a 16-year-old girl at richmond high school. the attack happened in 2009, at a dance. today, 22-year-old manuel ortega pled guilty. he's one of six men charged in that attack. according to police, the girl was punched, kicked and repeatedly sexually assaulted. ortega is going to be sentenced on october 19th. there was no red carpet or spotlights on an opening film. nearly two years of the deadly pg&e explosion in san bruno, comes a documentary about that night. nbc's bay area's jean elle joins us from redwood city where many of the survivors were invited to the screening. >> reporter: survivors of that blast say the film, "trial by fire," captured many of the horrors of that night. >> and the other house was on fire. >> reporter: the real-life nightmare of the deadly pg&e pipeline explosion in san bruno is now a documentary. an intimate group watched "trial by fire," in redwood city tonight, watching as the film recounted the horror they experienced on september 9th, 2010. >> couldn't do anything without water. >> reporter: bob is in the film. he barely escaped the inferno. >> it will always be in my mind what happened. think about it occasionally. you can't run and hide from it. >> reporter: still healing, he believes watching the film helped survivors release some of the emotion bottled up inside. >> probably brought a lot of people back. opened up some memories and stuff that people were trying to suppress. and i just kind of, if i can't face it head-on. >> reporter: they lost their home and two cats in the fire. wife, nancy, wasn't home when their neighborhood exploded. >> sometimes i feel guilty because i wasn't. and him mentioning the cats that we had, i'll never forget those. >> reporter: in just 30 minutes, filmmaker john rubben focuses on the emotion of that night. he says two years later, this event not over. >> there's two dramas here. one is the initial trauma. and the second is the endless, grinding frustration. >> reporter: the frustration of rebuilding. they're still dealing with insurance reimbursement and the lawsuit against pg&e. they're back in san bruno. but piecing their lives back together. >> as time goes on, it never gets quite back. you get close to somewhat of a normal life. >> reporter: the documentary will show here again at the history museum on saturday. the city of san bruno is remembering the deadly event on sunday with a community gathering. >> thank you, jean. burgers, fries and a lawsuit on the side. still ahead at 11:00, why two bay area men are ready to take on in-n-out burger. also, did the owner of a popular local grocery chain betray his roots? [ female announcer ] and now, try our new chocolate chip cookie 90 calorie brownie. good burgers. racist company? that's the allegation of two bay area men against the burger joint in-n-out burger. they're suing the eatery, saying the help wanted sign in the window isn't for minorities or 40-year-olds. cheryl hurd has been looking at the class-action lawsuit. >> reporter: this lawsuit is filled with allegations against the company based in irvine. based on allegations that people of color need not apply. the)jz lawsuit was filed in alameda county this week. it alleges that the popular in-n-out burger chain discriminates against people of color. >> we believe individuals who are applying for store associate positions and custodial positions at in-n-out burger, certain individuals are being discriminated against. >> reporter: attorney joe young represents two african-american men over the age of 40. one applied at the chain's oakland restaurants in june. in august, he was told he didn't get the job. the complaint also says a second plaintiff applied for positions in san francisco and oakland. young says his client was also denied employment. he says both his clients are qualified for the jobs they applied for. >> we believe their story isn't necessarily an outliar. it's indicative of a systemic -- a larger systemic process the company is engaging in. >> reporter: we were unable to contact in-n-out burger officials. but the company's vice president and general council is quoted as saying. we hire from the local communities. and our restaurants reflect the demographics of that community. the company will aggressively defend itself against these baseless and irresponsible allegations. allegations that one in-n-out burger customer weighed in on. >> they're kids. they're young kids that work there. and they make a lot of money. >> reporter: we went to three in-n-out burger locations. one in oakland, one in hayward and a third in pleasanton. there were several young african-americans working at the in-n-out burger in oakland. one or two in hayward and pleasanton. the attorney behind the suit says, he thinks the case is strong. >> we feel very good about the evidence that we have. and as we speak, more people are coming forward to talk about their experience at the organization. >> reporter: the attorney also says tonight he believes that more people will come forward. reporting live in oakland, i'm cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. there's new calls among several immigrant communities to boycott the largest latino grocery chain. they began checking the immigration status of its new hires through the voluntary federal program. it's used to check fake names and social security numbers. upset over that decision, the union representing the chain's 3,000 workers are asking the shoppers to boycott the stores across the bay area and central valley. the company tried to reassure its workers saying, quote, it's very important that you know that this program will only impact new hires. mi pueblo is proud to serve its diverse communities, particularly immigrants who represent the fabric of this great country. a new estimate from yosemite park officials. they say 22,000 people may have been exposed to the rare hantavirus. that's double the original estimate. the expanded warning comes after a another park visitor died from this disease. the park confirms there's a total of eight confirmed hantavirus cases, including three deaths. the most recent death was a west virginia resident who stayed at a tent cabin and camped in the park's high country. the other seven cases are linked to campers who stayed at the park's signature tent cabins. those cabins have been closed. the virus is transmitted by deer mice and their drops. the signs of the virus mimic the flu. a fire sale at amazon. upping the tablet war with four new versions of its kindle fire. amazon is taking a shot at apple with its tablet for $159. more importantly, $200 cheaper than the ipad. the new tablet begins shipping next friday. amazon is acknowledging the company probably won't make a lot of money on the devices. but it's banking on users to purchase all of the content through amazon. amazon eyes cutting into apple's bottom line. apple is ready to take aim at the growing field of internet radio. today, the cupertino company announced its service. it would move app until direct competition with pandora and i heart radio. apple would have an advantage because the service could come as a preinstalled app on every phone and ipad. let's bring in jeff raineri with our november forecast?
