hello. >> reporter: pleasure point is a hot spot for surfers. today was no exception. this water was packed with people at the time of the shark attack. a man was with two friends a mile off shore this morning when he got an unexpected jolt. >> a man was fishing in a kayak when his boat was lifted up by a 14 to 18 foot shark. >> reporter: these photographs show the damage to the kayak. the shark left a tooth behind. ed is well versed when it comes to sharks. >> he said he was hit by a great white. i saw the teeth marks and it looks like a great white hit him. >> reporter: the shark took a bite knocking the man in the water. >> about yeah big and two inches between each tooth. >> reporter: a fishing boat got him out of the water. he wasn't hurt. >> he was okay just knocked into the water and shaken. >> reporter: tomorrow it is supposed to be warm and sunny. law enforcement is warning beach goers if they want to get in the water it's at their own risk. live in santa cruz, kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. emergency crews tried to rescue a man who fell into the water at mcclure's beach. they received a call for help just after 2:30 this afternoon. but it took several hours before they were able to reach the body. there was heavy fog as you can see, in the area. tonight it is unclear how or why he ended up in the water. more people visit the coast when the weather warms up and officials are urging people to be extra careful of the water and the surf. let's bring in rob mayeda. >> we will have 80s and 90s showing up. look at the high temperatures. we were in the upper 90s around fairfield. and when you see temperatures like that it makes everyone want to head out to the coast. but we have a small craft advisory in the offshore waters off half-moon bay with the water temperature of 58 degrees. and we have patchy fog off the coast of santa cruz. the waves not that high. 6 foot waves and a water temperature of 59 degrees and the cool ocean waters supporting cool temperatures. santa cruz 72 degrees after morning fog starts to lift. but in the seven-day forecast we are tracking changes that could put us close to 100 degrees in parts of the bay area. we will talk about that and mountain thundershowers firing up in the sierra too. >> the temperatures are heating up in the bay area but is it nothing compared to the ten-day heat wave that hit the midwest and east coast. more than 200 record highs have been have been broken. temperatures reached above 95 degrees for a week and a half. add in the humidity and it is even worse. for senior citizens and those with health risks it's a matter of life and death in some cases. at least 36 deaths over the past week are blamed on the heat. ten of the deaths in chicago and three in an apartment building that has no air-conditioning. >> it's very hot inside the hallways. they are extremely hot. the rooms are extremely hot. the people leave the doors open so the air can circulate through them. i sit in the bathtub all day. >> the heat wave is threatening crops as well and increasing the risk of wildfires. things are back to normal in willow glen after a bomb scare shut down a farmer's market and several businesses in the area. witnesses say they saw a man walk into a shopping center and put down a suitcase near a bench and then walk away. the bomb squad responded and more than a dozen businesses were evacuated for nearly four hours as police used a robot to inspect the suitcase. turns out it was a typewriter inside. in san jose people gathered for a prayer service today that included many faiths and held in honor of the hundreds of people buried in unmarked graves. if you remember back in february, construction crews uncovered a graveyard dating back to the 1920s and '30s. it's believed 1400 unknown enand unclaimed bodies were buried there. >> we never forget even though the people buried here have been forgotten by society for many years. today we have changed that. >> the county has little to no identifying information for those bodies. and half way around the world, secretary of state hillary clinton announced that afghanistan is the newest major nonnato ally of the united states. in other words the u.s. will not abandon afghanistan as troops pull out. clinton met with the afghan president and made the announcement during a joint news conference. the designation gives afghanistan the same status as israel and egypt to name a few non-nato allies and is a symbol of the u.s. commitment to afghanistan's future. >> we are not imagining abandoning afghanistan. we are building a partnership with afghanistan that will endure far into the future. thank you so much. >> afghanistan is the first nation to receive major non-nato ally status since pax in 2004. -- pakistan in 2004. a heated argument turned dangerous as it played out on live television in jordan. a former politician accused his opponent of buying his seat. take a look at what happened next. [ speaking foreign language ]. >> look at that. the current lawmaker pulled a gun and threatened his rival. the host tried to separate the two men before the show cut to the credits. no shots were fired and no one was seriously hurt there. coming up next, we'll introduce you to a bay area olympian who had to join the boys' team in high school to play the sport she loves. plus dancing is not an olympic sport but a bay area dance team is headed to the olympics. the war yards want to build an arena on the water front but there is controversy surrounding that idea. in san francisco reality is starting to set in for some people who are realizing that proposed new warriors stadium can block their views of the bay. the neighbors say they didn't realize it sooner because the drawings give a false impression. monte frances has a look at how the stadium would be one of the tallest buildings along the water front. >> reporter: it was six weeks ago that the mayor was here announcing the stadium. neighbors in south beach are not cheering about it now. when complete the stadium will be 125 feet tall and that is 18 feet shorter than the lower deck of the bridge. the artist rendering which looks down on the city skyline from above does not reflect how looming and large the stadium would be if it goes up as planned here. and some residents say that a basketball stadium which is constructed more like a box could depreciate the value of their homes by taking away their views. >> if i live upstairs 15 or 20 floors that would be no problem. but i am on the fourth floor. so yes. >> i don't know which is more obtrusive, the structure that blocks my view or the fact i can't get out of my parking lot on a weekend. i'm not sure which will be more challenging. >> reporter: neighbors expressed their worries to the warriors president and concerns that the height of the stadium could be higher. but he and the mayor are committed to bringing the stadium here. the stadium would be one of the tallest structures except for the lock tower of the ferry building which is 245 feet tall. there are still community meetings and meetings with state officials ahead. this is far from a done deal. monte frances, nbc bay area news. a dance team from the east bay is preparing for a trip of a lifetime. they have been invited to perform at the summer olympics. the students are part of the cultural program. they are scheduled to dance at the island gardens. and this afternoon they showed off their talents. >> yeah, i'm excited to go to the olympics. we watch on tv every year and we get to go. it's a dream come true. >> they are excellent. if you see them you know the reason we are the ones we are going. everyone say they are carnival of dancers. it's amazing. they are topnotch. >> the students raised thousands of dollars as well to pay for their trip. and still ahead our olympic coverage continues. we'll introduce you to a water polo player from the bay area whose career started in an unusual way. thousands board the uss iowa for a trip down memory lane. we'll show you how the ship has been brought back to life. look at these pictures. what are these bears up to? for years the uss raise battleship sat idle in richmond. but today that ship came to life. we go on a tour, including a look at president roosevelt's quarters. ♪ >> welcome aboard the uss iowa. >> reporter: aboard the big stick in the port of los angeles it's easy to get in the mood and imagine what life was like for sailors in world war ii. >> what a marvel it is. >> the line will move slowly. >> reporter: more than 3,000 people waited in line this mortga morning. >> they have to learn three facts. >> reporter: and the crowd was streeted with this world war ii aircraft flyover. >> better than going to disneyland. >> reporter: the non-profit center raised 9 million to move and restore the ship. those from iowa got in free today. >> it is fun to experience it. >> reporter: you will see quite a view from the bridge. >> quite a view. you can see the harbor and both 16 inch guns. >> reporter: but the popular spot the the captain's cabin taken over by president roosevelt. >> the captain had to not only give up his quarters but they outfitted with the a special bathtub. >> makes you want to join the navy. >> yeah. it's exciting. it's very exciting to see a ship like this. you know, and still intact after all these years and how it was instructed. >> the usas iowa will be open every day except thanksgiving and christmas. and you we want to check in with rob mayeda on the warmup. >> we will see the temperatures start to climb up the middle part of next week. but outside right now interesting temperatures out in the east bay out in solano counties. a cool temperature forecast here for the inner bay and coast as the low clouds and sea breeze cooling things off. but the inland heat is trapped out there in the central valley. a mild night around the east bay and inland valleys. the foreca tomorrow you're going to have a lot of fog and low clouds on the coast. some low clouds locally inland. and for the coast and inner bay you might notice a slight temperature drop. the marine layer will pick up. but the real heat arrives come tuesday as high pressure starts to build in. the temperatures climb up and perhaps some of the moisture out of the desert southwest spilling out to the sierra and on the coastal range later on in the week. the main story is the marine layer and the low clouds keeping the temperatures in the inner bay. and to the coast comfortable. patchy low clouds in oakland and during the day the low clouds right on the coast. a few sunny breaks down to santa cruz. but tomorrow night the clouds come back in. as long as the clouds are on the coast the bay area will warm up but not excessively hot except for the inland valleys on tuesday. tomorrow, 80s and 90s inland. 60s to over 70s in san francisco and oakland. pleasant for most of the bay area sunday and monday. but a stretch of days from tuesday to thursday, 98 there on the board for wednesday. that could be pushed to 100 or slightly above. but middle part of the week. we'll watch the heat wave coming up. >> i do like the warm temperatures but that's a little warm for me. >> it's too much. let's check in with sports. >> hello henry what do you have for us?
