Here on nbc at 5 00. We begin with the flames in marin county. Those flames burning dangerously close to homes. You see its here, firefighters have been battling this brush fire in san rafael for several hours. Heres what we know right now. The fire is contained. However, the danger remains. Heres the exact location. This is happening in an area north of mccinnis. Warm and fairly windy. Whats the status for the firefighters . Reporter firefighters are still out here in force. Residents are being allowed to return home but they arent allowed to bring their cars into many of the areas. Thats because the hose lines are still out on the roadways. While this fire is contained, fire crews are still keeping very close tabs on the situation. Firefighters in marin are working to put out hot spots after a 12acre grass fire put hundreds of homes at risk. Because of the wind conditions and the dry and hot weather, the fire moved quickly, both up the hill and then looped around to the north of us. The fire burned right up to the edge, leaving three homes with minor exterior damage. Ian salvage raced home from work to find his was one of them. Theres mud tracks all through my carpet. They tore the deck down kind of. They broke the door. So theres some damage, but luckily, everything important to me is still there. Reporter police say despite the hard work of firefighters, one resident unhappy with the response took it out on a firefighter. He was very unhappy apparently with the Fire Departments response, or how he interpreted their response, or perhaps he felt they didnt respond quickly enough, and he threw an object at a firefighter. And so he was arrested for assault. Reporter but salvage says he has no complaints. Though a bit charred on the outside, hes glad his home is still standing. Thanks to these firemen. They did a good job. Reporter now, with hundreds of homes at risk at one point, the fire chief says this could easily have been a catastrophe. This fire moved very fast. Fortunately, firefighters moved faster. Reporting live, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. In san jose, firefighters are mopping up after aile of scrap metal caught fire. It happened at a Metal Recycling business in the willow glen neighborhood. It took crews about 20 minutes to put it out. Thankfully no one was hurt. The cause is not yet known. Now overseas to the developing story in iraq, where violent insurgents are pushing the nation toward the brink of civil war. President obama says he will not send u. S. Troops into that conflict, but is considering other military options. So this should be a wakeup call. Iraqs leaders have to demonstrate a willingness to make hard decisions. The insurgents are moving toward the capital city of baghdad. President obama says hell work with the Iraqi Government to finalize a u. S. Response within the next couple of days. Insiders say hes considering options such as drone or u. S. Air strikes. There have been some refinery fires in iraq, but overall the fighting isnt disrupting the countrys Lucrative Oil fields. Still, concern over any possible interruption is prompting higher prices for crude oil. It reached a tenyear high today, just as gas prices were starting to come down here in the u. S. Experts are forecasting a spike at the pump, up to ten cents a gallon in the next few days. He is back on u. S. Soil for the first time in five years. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl is now recovering at a Military Hospital in texas. He arrived just after midnight. He flew in on a military jet to san antonio from a u. S. Air base in germany. Military Officials Say hes in good physical condition, but theyre working on his emotional recovery. The taliban held bergdahl in afghanistan for five years. He spent much of that time in solitary confinement. Bergdahl was released after a controversial swap for five taliban prisoners. Bergdahls parents remain in their home state of idaho waiting for their son. Military officials will only say its up to the soldier to decide when to reunite. Another wellknown republican governor is visiting the bay area right now. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is here on a fundraising trip, but hes also speaking out against the controversial antigay comments made by fellow republican governor rick perry, who just left the bay area yesterday. This appearance here at facebook is closed to the reporters, but earlier today, governor christie made a public appearance, and at that appearance, he said that rick perry was wrong when he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. Ill just say that i disagree with him. And i dont believe thats an apt analogy because i think its wrong. Every governor and public official has to speak for themselves in these issues. Reporter thats Chris Christie reacting to comments from Texas Governor rick perry, who told an audience in San Francisco on wednesday that Sexual Orientation could be genetic, but like alcoholism, is something that can be treated. Today in San Francisco, christie campaigned with republican candidate for governor neil cash carry. Both eager to show their views, including the texas republican support of socalled repairtive therapy, are not shared by everyone in the gop. I just fundamentally dont agree. I can look to him for his economic ideas and we can disagree on these personal issues. Reporter Melissa Michaelson says its no surprise christie is trying to differentiate himself from the extreme right wing of his party on the issue of gay rights. The need to moderate yourself on these issues are exactly what you would need to win the national vote. If youre going to be competitive at the national level, you cant be far out there on these issues and the nation is moving forward. The nation is becoming more progressive on lgbt rights. Reporter and Chris Christie has not said whether hes running for president in 2016, but he told jimmy fallon last night in a hypothetical race against hillary clinton, he would win. Live in menlo park, Monte Francis, nbc bay area news. A new development now in the civil trial of giants fan bryan stow. Hes suing the l. A. Dodgers. The former own was on the defensive. Frank mccourt testified in a los angeles courtroom. Stows family claims the franchise didnt have enough security to prevent the brutal beating against him three years ago. Mccourt said today that fan safety was his top priority and denied slashing security costs. Stows father was in the courtroom and says mccourts testimony didnt help the case against the dodgers. It didnt seem like he was in charge of the organization, so he didnt it didnt seem like he answered a lot of the questions that were asked of him. And i thought he should have known. Two men attacked stow in the parking lot of dodgers stadium in 2011 after they played the giants. Stow has permanent brain damage from that beating. A gunman is still on the loose in san jose, wanted in the citys 19th homicide of the year. Police say a large fight broke out last night on south 12th street, just a block from kelly park in happy hollow zoo. Witnesses say the man grabbed baseball bats and shovels. Someone called police to report the fight. Just before officers arrived, someone shot and killed a young man. He had been trying to run into an apartment complex. Investigators have not yet identified the victim. Caught on camera. Vandals are using bricks and spray paint to apparently drive a new coffee shop out of business in west oakland. A new report reveals that air Traffic Controllers are still working overnight shifts on little or no sleep. A few years back, the faa promised to make reforms after nearly a dozen incidents in which controllers were sleeping or unresponsive on the job. The National Research council was especially concerned about schedules which crammed 40 hours into four days. Authors of the report found that kind of scheduling is still going on. A followup now on the recovery of last years massive rim fire at yosemite. A popular family camp is up and running again thanks to months of rebuilding. It was destroyed in that devastating wildfire. The fierce flames wiped out more than 400 square miles for about 20 days, making it the Third Largest wildfire in california history, in recorded history here. This is what san joses family camp looks like today. Reporter ten months ago, this was hell on earth. The rim fire. The Third Largest in state history tore through the western edge of the san jose family camp here in the stanislas national forest, destroying 17 tent cabins. Today on the first day of the new summer season, there are still reminders of that wildfire. You can see it in the moonscape on the ridge up there. Many trees burned so badly. The roots were incinerated, leaving behind these holes scattered throughout the campsite. Yet amid all this destruction, this camp has come back to life. Over just the past five weeks, the city of san jose has built 14 new campsites. You can see the brandnew structures with full electrical, some just need the railings and canvas, but for the most part, they are finished. We spoke with the campsites new manager, who has brought in january to rebuild this location that has been a san jose Family Tradition for more than 45 years. I think the biggest, most immediate challenge was the cleanup, the debris, the trees, the garbage, and the metal all from the burnt structures. Did you ever have any doubt about getting to this point on time . Cant say no. Cant say i never did. But its still a team effort. Still a team effort, and you move forward. Reporter the city of san jose has also been able to repair the welldriven water system here at the campsite that was severely damaged during the rim fire. In a short amount of time, this campground that was teetering on the edge of destruction just under a year ago, you can see its back up and running, in business for the next few months, and would you believe there are still reservations available. Here at the san jose family camp in the stanislas national forest, bob ridel, nbc bay area news. So great to see at least the san jose one up and running again. Yeah, we definitely have concerns about fires because of the drought, but fortunately no triple digit temps in our near future. Heres jeff. Thats right. We do have a great forecast coming your way. And its already Getting Started right now with temperatures that are in the 70s here across the bay area. 78 in the south bay. You can see throughout parts of San Francisco and also the east bay, plenty of blue sky, but again, a little bit of cooler weather right near the immediate coastline. But as you get away from that, it was again hotter today in that forecast. Well take you here to the south bay and thats where we are tracking a lot of blue skies. Well get you into the forecast. You can see here weve got High Pressure building offshore tonight. Thats going to keep that zonal flow in place, helping to decrease that fog, and what youll find is throughout this weekend is generally some hotter weather building in, as High Pressure begins to strengthen, thats going to help those temperatures to warm up in the forecast, and we should see temperatures go up anywhere from four to seven degrees by saturday and also sunday. Well take you to the fog forecast. You see a huge contrast from what weve been dealing with. At 7 00 in the morning, widespread sunshine expected here at the coastline, all the way to the interior valleys. As we advance and head right throughout the Morning Hours on saturday, were going to keep that blue sky from the north bay all the way down to San Francisco and also the south bay. Got a little bit of cloud cover that may increase, but thats just about it at this point. So lets take you to the microclimate forecast as we head throughout our saturday, and what youre going to find is plenty of sunshine. San jose expecting sunny skies and 82 degrees. Close to 90 in morgan hill. It is going to heat up, but no chance of any kind of triple digits coming our way. San mateo, 78. Palo alto, 83. Haze valley, even likely getting up to 70 degrees. Well take you to the north bay, east bay, and trivalley. Napa expecting 83 degrees. And for the east bay oakland at 74 and 84 back towards walnut creek. So some hotter air moving in with 89 expected in pleasanton, but without any offshore flow, its going to keep us from getting too hot, so you can see by this weekend, saturday, were going to average again, low 80s there in the south bay. San francisco 69. In the north bay 85. It is going to get hotter by sundays forecast with parts of the trivalley that will be into the mid 80s, but overall, an awesome fathers day weekend. The state Senate Unanimously passed a bill today allowing limited wine and cider tasting at markets with a certified manager. The law comes with limits, though.
