Five seconds. This is several hours after a small quake rattled the east bay. I felt this one. It was along the Berkeley Oakland border. The usgs said it was a 3. 2. No reports of injuries or damage. And while the shaking was mostly concentrated in the east bay, people in San Francisco and san jose reported feeling it, too. The owner of bills trading post in berkeley tells us she felt the shaking, but didnt cause anything to fall off her shelves. She says even though the quake was small, it left her feeling uneasy. We were helping a customer and he was talking to us right under that arch, and he moved, as he moved, we felt the whole building shake. My coworker looked outside and saw basic bird window sort of shaking. Yeah, i was on my bed and felt that shaking, too, for just a couple seconds. The ring of fire has been active. A 4. 4 shook pa chico on thursday. And these, of course, follow that deadly 7. 4 quake which hit taiwan on tuesday. Today, a 5. 2 aftershock rocked that region. The death toll has risen to 13. Hundreds remain stranded in areas that were cut off by damage, but aftershocks are hampering rescue efforts. Were looking out at oakland right now. Hazy out there. Not all that warm, but warmer than its been. Still some snow up there on mount hamilton. This is the camera from the observe tear. We have many fault systems around the bay area that are near that gilroy quake, again, san andreas fault. This one kind of occurring between the two. The 2. 5 not long ago. 2. 1, pretty close to the fault there off to the west. And along the hayward fault, that was that 3. 2 earthquake that a lot of people felt around 11 12 this morning. This many fault systems in the bay area, not a surprise to feel them. Anything but 2. 5 to 3. 2, thats going to get your attention. Another thing that get your attention, the cold temperatures, were only 59 degrees in san jose. We take you on a tour of the bay area, 57 in walnut creek, and in San Francisco, its breezy out there. Over the past few months, weve been speaking with the candidates in this race. Just search our page for their interviews. We have a followup to a deadly shooting in San Francisco. Police say theyve made an arrest. The shooting happened in the mission district. Officers found a man who had been shot on mission near 19th. He died at the scene. Investigators arrested a 35yearold richmond man last night. An electric vehicle crash leads to a hazmat cleanup in the north bay. A crazy kind of story. Chp says it started today when an officer tried to pull over the driver on highway 101. The driver didnt stop, sped up, leading the officer on a chase that at times reached 110 miles an hour. The driver lost control of the car, crashed at an exit. Due to the impact at that high rate of speed, a lot of the batteries were ejected from the vehicle. They were on fire when we showed up, some of them exploded. Car ended up submerged, just like that, on the side of the road. It was kind of a perfect ending for the flaming batteries. The driver, well, is going to be facing charges, those charges are pending, but is only slightly injured. He was released at the scene, mid 20s, a guy from santa rosa. Chp says they will keep it there overnight to make sure that fire is out, plan to remove it tomorrow. All right, less than 48 hours, all eyes are going to be on the sky, millions across the country getting ready to look up monday to the solar eclipse. Peaks at 11 00, its over by noon. You have a twohour window. Astronomers remind us, not safe to look directly at the sun. Not during an eclipse, not during the time, but not on monday. You need to use special glasses to protect your vision, and also use items around your house to view a reflection of the eclipse. Okay, so, where can you get those special glasses, terry . There you go. San jose Public Libraries are helping people get ready. Each branch is handing out glasses this weekend. They are limited to one pair per person and are being handed out on a first come, first served basis. And then the day of the event, were having a 10 30 viewing party out in front of our building. So, the librarys open, but were going to have a party in the front, and were going to take a look at the eclipse, do some trivia and just hang out and have a good time. Its usually in the back parties in the front at the library, folks. The library has plans to educate people about the eclipse tomorrow, as well. Crews pulled an elderly woman out of a canal after she crashed her car into it. First responders say the 70yearold lost control while driving on highway 4 near bailey road. She crashed through a fence, slid 200 yards down an embankment, then crashed through another fence and went into the canal. Her car was submerged in the frigid canal. Fire fighters say a neighbor heard the crash, called 911, and they credit that neighbor with saving this womans life. Paramedics got there, took her to the hospital suffering from the effects of the cold. We are told she was okay otherwise. Wow. Lets get back to the eclipse. Everybodys talking about it. Less than 48 hours away from the moon covering up part of the sun. Here in the bay area, well be able to see some of it. Some of it, not the totality. But as we mentioned earlier, youll need special glasses, but will your eclipse glasses work when you need them on monday . Astronomers say you can check them right now. Our Investigative Reporter shows us how. Reporter with reports of fake eclipse glasses out there, you might wonder about yours. Are they legitimate . Are they dark enough to protect your eyes . Are they too dark that you wont see the eclipse . The American Astronomical Society compiled a list of eclipse glasses that passed lab tests and should work. Snap this qr code to see if your glasses are on the list. Also, look for this stamp. Iso 123122. Its an International Science standard for looking at the sun. But heres the thing. Anybody can print on eclipse glasses that their product meets that standard. How do you know that it really does . The only way to know is if its gotten tested. Reporter this doctor says you can run a basic test on your eclipse glasses at home. Step one, start inside and put the glasses on. If they block out everything, you should be okay. Now, onto step two. Step outside. Take them out and take a brief glance at the sun through them on the next sunny day. If the sun is comfortably bright, you are almost certainly fine. Reporter what if you go outside for a test run an your eclipse glasses block the sun . If you cant see the sun through it, you know you are defective glasses, you should try to get them replaced, but were getting so close, were kind of running out of time. Reporter if you cant find a new pair, borrow someone elses. Eye doctors say, do not try everyday sunglasses, theyre just not strong enough. To safely watch the eclipse. Chris with the great advice. Youd be amazed how the leaves from trees can cast that shadow, mirror ball, like a disco ball, will project the image, too. You got one of those at your house. Were going to have to head there. Yeah. We had clouds, too but you can sometimes get a safe image, as chris mentioned there. Lets rewind back to october, the last time we had a partial solar eclipse, and boy, the weather was cooperating. Look at these shots. This was at 9 00 a. M. , going back to october, so, you get some partial views between the clouds and, of course, this will be happening as kids are in school. Nice way to do it is with the pick hole projector. You can project that image on the backside, and theres chris and johnny enjoying the viewing of the eclipse. Thats what im talking about, with the tree leaves and sun slight passes through them, you get the minicrescent suns across the ground. This time around, even better views is expected, coming up this monday. Right now, chilly in san jose, 59 degrees. 57 in walnut creek. And more 50s, as we head over to oakland, 56 degrees. And chilly jacket weather conditions in San Francisco, also at 56. Now moving forward into tomorrow morning, shower chances returning in the north bay and the coast. Chilly start, lows there in the 40s. Highs tomorrow, about the same as we had today, upper 50s, low 60s. Look at san jose, 62 degrees. Upper 50s around san jose and oakland. Try not to get districted by the sevenday forecast. Well be warming up by midweek, but we have one chance of showers to deal with first, and its coming down the coast tonight. By tomorrow morning in the north bay, the coast and some of the interior mountains, well see a chance of showers coming by from 4 00 a. M. To 8 00 a. M. The better opportunity with the heating of the day, pops up right after lunchtime, from about 2 00 in the afternoon to 4 00. Watch how those showers drop south, and after sunset, whats left of the showers will start to move away. So, notice the rain totals here, the rain projection, about a tenth of an inch of rain, enough that youre going to want the umbrella at times. Here are the key times for the eclipse now. Jumping to monday morning. Peak visibility, for the 35 partial eclipse, will be around 11 13 in the morning, and things wrap up around 12 15. Lets look at the cloud future cast. Patchy clouds, 7 00 a. M. This is good. This looks better than we saw around here last october. Mostly clear skies, and a mostly warmer forecast, moving forward. 70s inland on tuesday. By wednesday, numbers really start to take off. 70s and low 80s in the forecast. High pressure builds in, shower chances after tomorrow move out, and theyll probably stay that way as we move through the better part of next week, as you watch the temperatures really start to climb. Even a day of 70s possible, midweek. At this point, 70 feels warm. Imagine if we hit 80 wednesday and thursday . Things will be warming up heading towards midweek. That is going to be so nice.
