The system is still organizing, but forecast models indicate that from 13 of snow is possible. So be ready. Friday and saturday will see temps in the 30s early next week. 3 3 3 still to come tonight. Their appearance 60 years ago remains one of sioux citys greatest unsolved mysteries. 3 well tell you more about the unknown 15. Coming up 3 its probably the greatest unsolved mystery in sioux citys history. Not one. Not two or three. But 15 bodies found buried along the riverfront. And to this day. No one knows who they are or how they got there. 3 nats of traffic the first segment of i29 through iowa opened october first of 1958 here in sioux city. The three mile stretch running from the Big Sioux River on the north. To the u. S. 20 bridge across the missouri river. Earlier that year. While scaling away a portion of the bluffs about a half mile south of the floyd monument. Wo rkers discovered something very unusual. A grave site with at least 15 caskets. Theres a lot of speculation about whose these unkown 15 people were because theres nobody left to tell us. 07 its believed they were here sometime after lewis and clarks expedition in 1804. And before we became a city in 1854. A group of people for whatever reason probably got a disease. Choler a or something and it killed a whole bunch of them. At first it was thought they might be native americans because they all had black hair. And. One of the men was so large that they made him in fetal position, curled up to get him in the coffin. And so at first they thought that was the way native americans buried their dead in the fetal position. But some discoveries inside the caskets changed that. But they did find some things in there that had religious symbols on em so they thought it was at one time some jesuits that were traveling across the country preaching to people. Silver plated coffin handles also showed a high level of sophistication. And whoever they were with buried them because they had wood coffins. They had hinges for the lids. So it wasnt like lets just build a grave and throw these people in. 14 experts from morningside college. To the university of iowa and kansas eventually studied the remains. And local author Margaret Crary even wrote a Childrens Book about the discovery. But so far much remains to be known about the unknown 15. 3 theres no doubt our modern Technology Might Help shed new light on this years long mystery. But. Adding to this mystery is that somehow all the remains have and ive been told no one seems to know where they are anymore. 3 3 the governors of more than half of u s states now say they oppose the obama administrations plan to take in thousands of Syrian Refugees. 3 coming up after the break, were looking at if that opposition actually means anything. 3 more than half the nations governors so far stand united in trying to halt the Syrian Refugee Program in their states. Our National Corespondent jeff barnd asks whether the states have the authority to do that. And how far theyd have to go to win. 3 sot ; 12 ryan po62tu this is a moment where its better to be safe than sorry House Speaker paul ryan introducing a measure to stall Syrian Refugees from arriving in the u. Ultimately legally, the federal government has the authority to put these refugees into the states and the states have very little say 33 vo freer says much of the president s power comes from the 1980 refugee act gfx the president may admit refugees who face persecution or a wellfounded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion into the u. The governor in calling for the federal government to stop settling those refugees in their states until the governors are assured there are no potential terrorists sneaking into the country with them. 3 we would much rather keep them out in the first place. We need to have the assurance by the Intelligence Community that were not going to have dangerous people, members of isis embedded, among the people that might come into the united states. The governors cannot actually block the refugees from coming. But can and have ordered state agencies not to provide them any assistance. 3 3 the republican president ial field is one candidate smaller tonight. Louisiana governor bobby jindal announced he is suspending his campaign for the white house. Despite completing a full grassley of town Hall Meetings in all of iowas 99 counties. Jindal never registered more than single digit support in state and national polls. In his announcement. Jindal said he will support the eventual republican nominee. And says it wont be donald trump. 3 3 akronwestfields Football Team is the only team left in the state tournament who is unranked. 3 Chris Neyenhouse caught up with their record setting coach and quarterback tonight. Hear how that distinguishment suits them just fine. Sports 3 3 making the state playoffs as an unranked team is all about defying the odds and playing better than the so called experts expect. And while thats a coole story, now that were down to 12 teams among 6 classes playing in this weeks championship games, theyve all lost, well, except akronwestfield. 3 behind the Huge Development of class as leading number one passer cal eskra, the westerners have become the greatest show on turf lately. Eskra became just the 8th quarterback in state history to throw for over 500 yards in a game. And in their seimfinal win over mount ayr he set a new state playoff record. Taking a break from receiving his National Honor society recognition tonight, both eskra and head coach Eric Walkingstick say playing without a ranking next to their name suits them just fine. 3 i like that a lot. I like being the underdog. I like being the team thas laying low. And just kind of surprising everybody. Not many People Choose us to really win most of the games were winning right now. I think thats really what motivates us very wellwe dream big we work hard. Its the way we should win our lives. We should sit there and go out and no matter where we are in life we should sit there and battle and do things right and work hard. And thats what my kids have done. Theyve worked hard, they didnt listen to people who said they couldnt and thats why theyre in the situation theyre in right now. Theyve worked hard. Eskra i mean the team is just peaking at the right time. Offense, defense, special teams, everybody is just doing their jobs. Were staying diligent with everything were doing and everything is just falling together here at the pefect time. Those were some amazing words to live by from coach. In fact he was at the nhs ceremony to give a speech to those kids. Many are on this Football Team. Coach says he takes pride in developing these kids as a family and theres no more obvious example than his record setting quarterback. 3 coach well first is his intelligence. He does a great job of listening and learning and understanding coverages. Thats probably the primary. The other thing is the kid doesnt run with regular blood. Hes got ice water in his veins. He doesnt get shook. He doesnt get scared or nervous. He executes to perfection. Eskra i mean great offensive line up front for me to buy me some time. Great receivers making plays every game. And i think that just makes my job pretty easy. Coach hes thrown for over 3600 yards, hes ran for over 1500 yards. Hes acumulated over 50 touchdowns. Hes definitely a scoring machine and hes a dual threat its been fun working with him. And the great thing is we have him back for another year. You can watch Akron Westfield go for the title just like all the football state championship games on our sister station kpth fox 44. This one starts at 1 30 on thursday. 3 i told cal i would play our blooper from the beginning of the season. This was the first game of the year against hinton. Cal hit me with the football to be fair i was open akronwestfield lost the game and starting off 01 is probably a big reason for the lack of a ranking this season. It just goes to show that while hes learned to be a record setting passer since then ive also learned better ways of getting out of the way. 3 dakota valley is preparing to head out to sioux falls tomorrow in advance of their state tournament matchup with mobridgepollock thursday. The three seed panthers will be favored over their 6th seeded opponent. But coach rick pruett and senior annie mccabe say theyre taking nothing for granted as they prep for what they hope is a state title run. 3 they had a great season, they were ranked in the top six or seven most of the season. They did struggle at the end of the season. They lost their last four regular season games. So i dont know if there were some injuries involved or not. I was able to get some film on them so ive been able to see them play. I think that were getting along great right now. I mean we have been getting along great all season. But were playing with a lot of energy. A lot of fun. And were really playing our game strong and our serving game has really increased a lot lately. Annie did confirm that star hitters meredith and Elizabeth Lammers approve of my lammers with the slammers catch phrse. The team shoves off for sioux falls tomorrow 3 gpac honors were announced today and its no surprise top ranked morningside took home lots of hardware. Qb ryan kasdorf is the offensive player of the year. Zac schleuger is codefensive player of the year and steve ryan was named coach of the year. Congrats to the mustangs. 3 in College Football the latest Playoff Committee rankings are in and iowa is currently sitting number five in the College Football playoff ranking system. Of course the top four teams at the end of the regular season make the tournament that determines the national championship. 3 so iowa is juuust on the outside looking in. Weve got a few weeks to sort this out though. But iowa, if they can just keep winning. Looks like the next team to make the top four if clemson, alabama, ohio state, or notre dame lose down the stretch. 3 3 early next week.
