Most of music from old vinyl L.P.'s so please forgive me any for any less good good quality sound but if you're like me I only hear the music after the 1st minute or so when I was researching the bands I realize that the terms jazz and swing or even pop and dance music are sometimes used interchangeably and you may not agree but I'm not going to worry about it for me the broad term swing still fits but what really matters is it's all great music and just for fun I'm going to play the band's themes soul and let you guess the name of the band. And then I'll see if you words or maybe follow up with if you're not maybe but for sure follow up with some memorable music from these guys and if you feel like dancing you go for it and understood driving I made me do some of that I so. I've left a window of time I think towards the end of the program so if I don't play your special favor swing song let me know. If I've got it and there's time played for you our phone numbers are 831 area 48 is 01999408 area code 260-2999 but give me a chance to play it 1st before your call then Ok Ok here's our 1st song Fame song tell me who the bad leader is. Yeah. And in case you didn't know and I suspect most of you did that was Moonlight Serenade Glen Miller's theme song and he compose it in 1935 and he simply called it a numbers tune at that time it was changed to my surname when he recorded it in 1939 and it stayed for 15 weeks in the number 5 position of the Billboard charts. And let me tell you a little bit about Glen here. I'll turn to Glen Miller he was born in 1000. $904.00 in a small town in a while but his family moved a few times they finally settled in Fort Morgan Calderon. As a child he learned to play the mandolin and Karen it cleared it and then at 16 he began playing the trombone he played football in high school and one title best left in Colorado. Music was his 1st love and he organized a dance band and high school Miller enrolled at the University of Colorado in Boulder while also taking on as many gigs as he could and attending auditions and then when he failed 3 of the 5 classes he was taking understandably he dropped out to pursue the music he studied composition and then he went on to become an accomplished composer and arranger as well as a trombonist on a successful bandleader Meanwhile he continued to take advantage of opportunities to learn more from other professional musicians. At different times he played in the bands of Benny Goodman Red Nichols and also Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey eventually he formed his own Glenn Miller Band but found little success until about a year later when he hired Wilbur Schwartz to play clarinet along with his saxophone they blended beautifully smooth Glen Miller sound was born it was 1939. He was sometimes criticized for being a perfectionist and his practice sessions were long despite the ongoing jazz career. He preferred dance music and he was quoted as saying I don't want a jazz band but that didn't stop him from playing jazz they went on to become the best selling recording band from 1939 to 1942 making 16 number one records and 69 Tom says We talked 10 hits in 14 year period that overlapped the circuit World War. Joined the Army in 1902 he became a captain and in 1903 he was made the director of bands for the Army Air Force was trading command. In July 1904 he travelled to London to entertain American and British soldiers entities sempre of that year when I was planning to travel to France to begin to European continental tour he boarded a single engine airplane on December 15th ahead of his orchestrate across the English Channel in order to finalize tour arrangements Sadly the weather was bad and the airplane never made it. Despite several searches his plane as never been found. Ok here's your chance to try out those swing steps as a band starts off with the mood. Lucky Good. Junction. Remember the apple tree. Next. To get. A. a low dose of. Me. Me . Me. Me. Here's. The most. World events are short remembrance to Glenn Miller thanks for the phone calls guys I'm glad you're enjoying it. I have more to say on that subject in a while. But I will say that if I missed your favorite tune by Glenn Miller or any of the other bandleaders I'm going to be playing to let me know if I've got it and if there's Tarmoh slip it in for you but please don't call I'm talking Ok Ok let's keep going we've got 4 big bands lined up that was number one Glenn Miller. Ok here comes a theme song from our next band See if you know who this is right. C a good little 3rd basemen to do that all right. Oh . Oh. Oh and it was 2 in a row for Mr Bennett good. Benjamin good meaning was born the 9th of 12 children in 1009 and he grew up to be known as the international king of swing. His father had emigrated from Poland and his mother had come to the u.s. From Lithuania they had married in Maryland but as the family who they were very poor and they moved to the slums of Chicago before their son Benjamin was born when he was 10 his father enroll him in 2 brothers in the local synagogue for music lessons. He did well and he joined a boys' club band later he received 2 years of classical instruction when he was 15 he joined his high school's dance band and he was well on his way to his career when he joined the local musicians union. He later become a member of a band that included the famous jazz musician biter Beck and learn to love the music of New Orleans jazz musicians. In 1928 he moved to New York and he famously played alongside Glenn Miller Tommy Dorsey and joy of annuity in a recording session with the so-called All Star Orchestra he later recorded into the name Benny Goodman is born as with his band that featured Glen Miller he later collected with the Fletcher Henderson who became as a ranger when Goodman got his radio program let's dance and Henderson continued arrange for me even after the radio program ended throughout to thirty's Goodmans band continued to sporadic. Popular and failed receptions as they toured across the country their tour to or took them finally to Los Angeles and they were playing their own standards but the evening was not going well legend is that the band's drummer Gene Krupa you might have heard of him so if we're going to die Betty let's die of playing our own thing so the switch to the jumping arrangements of Fletcher Henderson and Spud Murphy The crowd loved it and they became excited massive and through 0 stick dancers writers have called that night of August 21935 the beginning of the swing era and it was the beginning of Benny Goodman fundamental success. Interestingly I think his music was barred in Germany or banned I guess in Germany and Italy and one British author filed a complaint with the b.b.c. Requesting Goodmans music be forbidden from airplay describing it as an awful series of jungle noises which no man. Says from it or somehow. Meanwhile young people in Europe and North America thought differently and they kept demanding more Benny Goodman is true historic moment was in January 1038 when his band performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City the no famous concert was sold out the reception was wild. And in one night jazz became an accepted and respectable genre of music in another less impressive but significant event in 1939 Goodman unwillingly allowed an electric guitars to play with his band after their 1st break during a concert. To Goodman surprising he everyone else were really impressed the guitarist was Charlie Christian and he was made a member of Goodman sextet for 2 years from then on the electric guitar became a widely popular jazz instrument. Goodmans band started the careers of many musicians during an era of racial segregation he made one of the 1st integrated jazz groups and in his later years he explored classical music he continued performing almost to the end of his life in 1960 he performed. A bit you did know this one in a New York City concert featuring Mozart's clarinet concerto. Well Benny Goodman died of a heart attack in New York City in 1986 at the age of 77. Ok Let's Dance for a while to some of Benny Goodman his best swing numbers and again if I'm not playing your. With your band and bands not already play because you don't want to get to play can you call in if I've got time and if I have it of course put it on for you. Let me see Ok good men here. Coming up.
