Let me give you one example of how hard this is going to be the employment the timber industry in California is less than half today as what it was about 2025 years ago and so p.g. And e. Struggling with bankruptcy is trying to clear the brush in the branches from some 2500 miles of high priority high power lines they can't get the people to do it you know working out in the. Forest is the 2nd most deadly job in America after being a commercial Fisher and you know it's hard to find people that can cut down trees and not die in the process and most of them now have gone on the unemployment line or moved to other states it's hard to get a Chuck De Vore for people outside of California who don't know about the p.g. Bankruptcy give us the Cliff Notes version about what happened so their equipment was blamed for a terrible fire last year that ended up killing about $84.00 people in the town of Paradise burned down most of the town now there's plenty of blame to go around the people the town of Paradise cut down the evacuation route from 2 lanes to one with lane to make the town look more acetic we policing so they created a bottleneck to probably kill their own people as well but they're liable and they're facing down about $30000000000.00 in liabilities from the fires that could be traced to the faulty equipment that wasn't properly maintained and it goes back to what I mentioned in the previous segment that they asked for 4400000000 dollars 5 years ago to improve and repair their lines and were denied by the Public Utilities Commission in California just chuck you mention Gavin Newsom's analysis of what's going on I want to play you what he said and then I want to play a c.n.n. Clip of that to attribute all of this to climate change it's more than just climate change and it is climate change but it's more than that and this relates to p.g. And e. It's about dog eat dog capitalism meeting climate change it's about corporate greed meeting climate change and I take it folks out there are citing right the climate crisis for a lot of this problem Absolutely absolutely I mean just to look at the acreage burned as these things get hotter and used to be they'd measure than that a fire would get about 1700 degrees Fahrenheit at the max now they're measuring fires at $2100.00 degrees which is enough to turn sand in the glass and destroy every man made thing and more and more homes in these wild spaces means more fuel for these fires Chuck De Vore c.n.n. Didn't even hint at the possibility that it might have something to do with bad land management not even not even a suggestion of that. Well right and of course it is very frustrating to hear Gavin Newsom talk about capitalism and how this is a failure of capitalism and in climate change look there are no companies that are more regulated in California than California's 3 major public utilities p.g. And e. S. Southern California Edison s.t.g. Any these these companies only make money on what the people who Gavin Newsome appoints tell them that they can make money on and in the last few years they've had to ramp up wind and solar hugely tremendous amounts of wind and solar and when they ask for money to maintain their lines in the case of p.g. And e. They get denied and that's by the way Larry how they make their money they're not like a regular company that can just go off and sell a product and determine a profit they have to ask permission to charge certain rates and they have to ask permission if they want to upgrade the lines they have to say hey look we'd like to do this could we have some money for our repairs for this police so this isn't really capitalism this is this is government that is failing not capitalism it's the opposite of capitalism My guess is Chuck De Vore formerly a member of the California Assembly He's now a Texan and it's v.p. Of a national initiative at the Texas Public Policy Foundation Chuck let's talk about policies that have basically benefited wealthy people in California or at least not hurt wealthy people because they're still wealthy despite the taxes in the regulations but the middle class and the poor they're the ones being hurt by these policies Well absolutely in the something I think a lot of folks outside of California don't understand is that the part of California that everyone really focuses on and thinks of when they think of California perhaps aside from the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range is the beaches right and along the coast is where most of California's elite rich live and the temperature there is so beautifully moderated by the coal waters of the Pacific that you really have to. Use your air conditioner now as you go further away from the coast the average temperatures go way up and that's where the working Californians largely live is in the more eastern hotter parts of the state so as the cost of electricity keeps going up and up and California has among the highest electrical costs in the country certainly in the contiguous $48.00 there's only a couple 2 or 3 states that have costs that are higher and by the way about double the average cost of what it is in Texas what ends up happening is that people live for example in the Inland Empire to the east of Los Angeles pay several times more to cool their homes than someone living in Hollywood would and furthermore they have a lot less money than the person living in Hollywood has and so is this begins to happen in California has such a high cost of living you see California that having the highest rate of poverty in the country with the poverty rate that actually takes into account the cost of living is called the supplemental poverty rate it's not not official but they're both done by the Census Bureau the supplemental poverty rate shows that California's level of poverty has been the highest among the states since this rate was 1st rolled out 10 years ago and a lot of that a lot of the high cost of living is due to government regulations and is due to these energy policies Chuck De Vore we have super majorities in both the Senate and the assembly by that I mean the Democrats can pass tax hikes without a single Republican vote. Well absolutely and that's what they've been doing you certainly see that with the the cap and trade measure the passed a few years back and they passed it again with a supermajority because someone was threatening to sue that it really wasn't a fee it was a tax now that cap and trade tax increases the cost of gasoline in the state another $0.10 a gallon you already have the most expensive gasoline in the country we talked about that in the previous segment. You know it's not going to get any better anytime soon you also as you know have a huge unfunded public pension liability for all those government workers that have been promised really nice pensions when they retire.
