Some travel experts actually call this the best wildlife road trip and that goes from Jackson Wyoming to Yellowstone the 82 mile trek is along us 191 you can see bison elk wolves Most bears and dozens of bird species alive in America's 1st national park making it one of the best places in the United States to view wildlife now while animals are abundant inside the park you'll likely see some species on the short drive from Jackson's park south entrance at Grand Teton and Jackson lake a long way getting to Jackson from Phoenix is over 900 miles and it will take you close to 15 hours but if you're prepped and ready to go to just pop in and out of the gas station you've got your cooler in the back you can do it in one day 15 hours tough drive but you can do it so I have done the 15 hour trek so you don't have a lot of time if you don't have a lot of time I also recommend flying into Jackson Hole airport and renting a car to drive the remaining distance get those motors run in and now a little bit of trivia prior to President Eisenhower's Interstate Highway Act of 1956 u.s. Highway $191.00 was the longest North-South route across the western United States but beginning it would begin in southern Arizona and end at the Canadian border in the town of Loring Montana u.s. $191.00 intersects and straddles much of our country's scenic backbone called done today. Can you guess the Continental Divide most of the 3500 square miles of wilderness that makes up Yellowstone National Park is in Wyoming with only 3 percent in Montana and one percent in Idaho the recreation area sits on top of a volcanic hotspot of the volcanic areas there so fun Yellowstone features dramatic canyons Alpine Rivers lush forests hot springs and gushing geysers they're all in that area including its most famous Old Faithful there's so many things to do and see so I hope I'm going to give you a few of the highlights number one Mammoth Hot Springs trails it's a must see for hundreds of years shown and bannock people talk collected minerals from Mammoth Hot Springs for white paint these minerals contribute to the beautiful terrorist structures along with heat and natural plumbing system water and limestone the volcanic heat source for Mammoth Hot Springs remains somewhat of a mystery so at Mammoth a network of fractures and fissures from the plumbing system that allows hot water from the underground to reach the surface. The water comes from rain and snow falling on the surrounding mountains and sea being deep into the earth where it's heated small earthquakes may keep the plumbing open limestone provides the final ingredient very very cool I tend to like to believe that the magma is right there heating the water and you're getting fresh least you know heated natural water but I know that's not the case it's not right there so but that's the kid in me all right now tucked away in the nor in the Norris geyser basin is steamboat guys are now this is the world's tallest active geyser it's major eruptions shot water more than they shoot scuse me not shot water more than 300 feet in Yellowstone National Park recorded history only 2 other guys geysers have exceeded steamboat in size steamboats minor and major irruption are entirely unpredictable so whenever you go you don't know what you're going to get. Kind of like Forrest Gump it's not a box of chocolates but over the years steam Bob's eruptions have been sporadic some years saw frequent eruptions such as 1902 and 83 when dozens occurred but quiet periods throughout the 1990 s. And late 2000 were marked by years of dormancy between single eruptions one thing is known steamboats geyser future Russians will continue to be unpredictable while the park has recently experienced a couple of major options they don't signify that seem boats eruptions will be more frequent but they're more in line with steamboats past history the dynamic nature though of this geyser basin and the geology of Yellowstone as a whole keeps everyone guessing there are so many fun little mysteries in nature. For those of you that Leavitt like me now Old Faithful is a cone guys are named in $870.00 during the Washburn expedition and was the 1st geyser in the park to receive in its highly predictable geothermal feature and its reps at every 44225 minutes since the year 2000 a current Lee erupts 20 times a day and is located in the upper guys in Beijing Basin section of the park the guys are viewing area is the most accessible and visitor friendly in the park with bench seating large parking lot and our ranger station that tracks the time height and length of an eruption to predict the next eruption you know I have to say I'm not sure I'd want to be right there when the steamboat one hits 20300 I mean I haven't been there when it erupts so but I'm wondering if you get wet you know and if the water's heated I wondering if that's a little bit dangerous nobody really mentions that when you're there or online. But I kind of was curious I don't know if you're curious about that but my family were safety people 1st safety 1st so now here's the thing Yellowstone offers an amazing wildlife viewing opportunity any time of the year animals tend to feed during early morning and evening and may be more visible at these times because they're up and moving around now there's began emerging from hibernation in March and April and can often be seen grazing in roadside Meadows until the heat of summer pushes them to higher elevations and away from the roads winter is a great time to watch the wolves because they're out of their dens pups usually emerge in May and it's easier to see on a snowy landscape really where they are. So records of birds have been you know kept in Yellowstone since its establishment and these records document nearly 300 species of birds to date including Raptors song birds shorebirds and waterfowl approximately 150 species nest in the park and the variation in elevation the broad away of habitat types found with within Yellowstone contribute to the relatively high amount of diversity within the birds many of the birds are migratory though and they currently there's no federally listed bird species known to breed in the park of Yellowstone now the Yellowstone caldera is a volcanic caldera and a super volcano sometimes referred to as the Yellowstone supervolcano it's roughly 30 miles long and 45 miles wide which is considered by most people me included very huge mostly because the result is this is so big because the result of 3 eruptions based on the volcanic exclusivity index any volcano that produces 240 or more cubic miles of magma is considered a super volcano I have to tell you I would say consider like I don't know 5 feet of magma scary if I was there and sighed but you know that's amazing it's a it's a bucket list for me to see the magma on any kind of volcano I don't know about any of you but now a brief over think of overview of other things you should know before visiting Yellowstone. It is seasonal with hundreds of thousands of people visiting in June July and August that's not the time I particularly like to go as of mentioned many times before one of the things you can really get value out of your time is not waiting in line with all the crowds so I am not somebody who is visiting in June July and August with everyone else it's a big place and traffic and road construction often make the drive times even longer and I don't like all of that so if you want to avoid the crowds visit before 9 am and after 3 pm if you insist on going from June through August the campgrounds and lodges fill early so don't wait until a last minute to find a place to sleep keep in mind cell phone service is limited Yeah they love that gotta have that time with the family so don't be surprised if you can't receive calls another little bit of advice stay on the boardwalk since the hot springs have injured more people than any other natural feature including animals. And speaking of animals bears inhabit the entire park not just the back country so you have to learn how to travel safely around them never approach the animals take pictures and always be aware of your surroundings bears are known in this area to charge so you gotta watch yourself on the trails if you see them stay at least 25 feet away this is in general when you're out there hiking and exploring with your family especially if they've got Cubs or anything around the recommended a minimum of 25 feet from wolves and bears if you see em just you know quietly back away give them their space and make sure you have bear spray it is a worthwhile purchase and you can get it on line and especially if you're not flying if you're driving you can bring a nice big can of it we're coming right back buckle and more to come. OK's Oni's Welcome back to the Victoria McVeigh show I've been talking about taking a road trip to Yellowstone. You know park now I want to share also a great place to go on a road trip in Arizona that ranks as one of the top places to take a hot air balloon ride the world's oldest form of aviation for those of you the haven't taken a hot air balloon ride I highly recommend it and if you have somebody in your family likes a thrill ride the take off and actual ride to be pretty gentle landing could be sometimes a little rough so we had a couple one crash landing and my little quite story on this like to share family stories that's what life is all about is going we were younger you have to get up very early in the morning to get a hot air balloon right and my little brothers packed cereal in bags we were I was 12 that would make We're all 3 years apart so that would make one of them 9 and one of them 6 and they all they brought bags of cereal corn puffs and whatever well there was a hole at the very bottom of the hot air balloon basket and my brothers were were pushing the cereal through like the Cheerio through the hole and that high up at the velocity that could actually really hurt the cows or anything below so the hot air balloon you know operator wasn't super thrilled with them and I was kind of chiding them on saying that see you know we can hit anything but you know your kid you don't know you're going to hurt anything but that's a little thing don't be dropping anything outside of the hot air balloon and prepare yourself for maybe a crash fun landing but not a dangerous crash just sort of slides along on the side now Ok so. What a great place to view a sunrise is in Sedona and this is where we're talking about taking a hot air balloon ride it is ranked among the top places in the world to travel by experts due to the beauty of the red sandstone towering canyon walls and Jagat rock formations as your hot air balloon hovers at a low altitude you'll be able to see Sedona as unique wildlife and stunning red rocks. You might also be able to see the beautiful pine trees on the nearby Coconino forest I love our great state I love talking about it if you move if you are more into an activity that is ball staying on the ground though Sedona has a ton of hiking trails including West Fork trail this is an easy 7 mile hike and is considered one of the best trails in the country especially during this fall time of year perhaps due to the brilliant fall colors you'll get to view along the brook that bisects the path and encourage you to hop from stone to stone. To cross the water got to do it I fall sometimes in the water but you know what get a little water proofing on your shoes who cares everything dries it's just water so be sure and bring an empty tote to fill with fresh apples drop from the trees in the grassy field just off the trail that is beginning at the beginning of the hike and I also want to share with you information about the 2 day Apache Lake music festival coming up next week and on October 18th and 19th it showcases the best bands in Arizona so for those of you music fans you can it's the 10th year anniversary and the sounds and sights are some of the best the state has to offer as well as the campsites on the lakes beach are on beatable the festival has received critical acclaim as one of the best music festivals in the southwest and its fall tradition for festival goers there's about 1500 people that normally attend pretty good turnout in my mind you know without it being crazy crowded it's not like one of those techno festivals where everyone's naked this is like a real music festival All right so now before I get to my travel tip of the week I want to share with you some tourist traps here in the u.s. That being you should avoid there's a great deal of hype surrounding popular tourist destinations all over the country and they may not and usually don't live up to their reputation instead check out near these nearby vacation spots and activities that are just as fun and much less crowded giving you a much better value in your time with your family all right now number one if you're looking for the glamour of Hollywood or want to spots the liberties don't go to the Hollywood Walk of Fame or you'll find their crowds of tourists tacky give shops and odd street performers. The truth is that area is much more grime than glam if you have to make the trek Grumman's Chinese Theatre may be the only reason to venture into this area if you truly want to see where Hollywood magic happens I could just hear that in the magic sounds in the background Ok if you want to see where the magic happens you need to go to the studios studios are a great way to get a glimpse into the film history and the secrets behind the camera on the valley side of the Hollywood hills you'll find Warner Brothers Studios a guided tram was if you are around large studio grounds to show of all kinds of film sets you feel like you're on location as you journey through old town squares and for Mr familiar cityscapes Next you want to see where the pilgrims 1st landed in the new world then don't go to Plymouth Rock. The real landing was more likely near Provincetown on the Cape of on the tip of Cape Cod And unfortunately the town in Plymouth will try to convince you otherwise and get your visit their star attraction instead here's what you do if you're in the area a whale watching excursion the season runs from April to October and the thrill of watching these giant mammals on the open waters of the Atlantic is unforgettable the tours are run by naturalists who love the whales and they'll make your trip both fun and a learning experience as well so if you got some little ones this is a great way to create memories with them you can also grab some of the best seafood on the eastern seaboard at the town war before you set sail from Plymouth to Cape Cod Bay where you'll have a chance to set up close and personal with them back humpback and pilot whales. Ok now I'm going to just say this many of you are going to like this so you know I have some solutions but solutions we're talking this week about ammonia it often takes a backseat to bleach but it's one of the most powerful cleaning products it's effective on breaking down grime in your home stains from animal fats vegetable oils such as cooking grease and wine stains it's commonly used in glass cleaning solutions as well to help avoid streaking So let's get started with some of these uses it's great to clean your electric oven you can turn on the oven and get 150 degrees you know what I'm going to give more details on the Facebook on this one because we're running Lou on time but just know you can clean your electric oven with this awesome awesome awesome and started 150 degrees will give you the tips of the actual you know run down on this on Facebook. So also you can get rid of unsightly soap and grease buildups you near porcelain sink. And you know you just use a tablespoon of ammonia and one gallon of hot water and rinse and I want to say this ammonia stinks it's awful smelling so in order to combat that my personal opinion is you can do one of 2 things you can pick your favorite really smelly oil like grapefruit eucalyptus or whatever to combat it and mix it in I like using the essential oil afterwards letting it sit on the clean surface after the ammonia and everything has been washed off and it's just really really easy to wipe it off and you have much better smell because ammonia smells frankly like cat pee so there we are but it does an amazing job and if you are not super smell sensitive you can also use lemon something like that to cut the smell so I just want to put that out there because many of your public oh new I am not using that something that smells like cat pee in my household but you can buy one product and do all of these things with it and essentially you can cover up the smell very quickly with a nice essential oil or even frankly for a breeze so for those of you that are interested in that now you can also use ammonia on your bathroom tiles they'll not only sparkle again but the ammonia will also kill the mildew So for those of you that are really really you know I've seen some bathrooms where people say oh yeah we just had you know somebody come in and clean but they have hard mold on there that is not healthy for you I'll tell you what the ammonia smells better than hard mold in your bathroom so if you want to bring bring smart sparkle back to your good crystal you can make several drops of ammonia with 2 cups of water and apply with a soft cloth or brush rinse it off clean water and then dry so you can also the next time you paint the inside of your house absorb the smell of paint by placing small dishes of ammonia in each room that's been painted if the smell persists after days replenished. The dishes vinegar onion slices were also work if you aren't a big fan of of the cat. But for some of you that can't handle paint smells this is not a bad alternative we're just telling you what u.k. And cannot do you don't have to take all this advice but many of these things I really do like because I can't sleep in a room of paint smell I can sleep in a room that does smells alone and and lavender whatever oil but the paint smell makes me nervous I'm killing brain cells so.
