crossroads, with leadership in finances at the center. july 1st, the campus will have a new president. in the meantime the outgoing president is giving his assessment of where s js u stands. >> reporter: interim president don castro said he has confidence. both on the incoming president and the school. >> i know him well. he is a competent, detailed guy and he is gathering every bit of information he can. >> he is very interested in getting a good start. >> reporter: the president came to sjsu if a dedication ceremony. >> he knows more people here than you might think, because he worked here for ten years. and he stayed in touch with us, in different pays. he never has seen a system $500 million in the red, like sjsu is now. >> i think it is a new challenge for restructuring and changes on campus i don't what i have heard, from others, is that he is going to make sure the school is held accountable, and he is looking for transparency in making sure everyone is doing what they should be doing. >> the doctor is off to a good start. >> he is the best transition i have ever been around. with his attitude,. >> president castro says he is already attending silicone valley's meeting on high education. update news. the reason the president was on campus thursday was to see the school of nursing renamed, in honor of the valley foundation. the school received a $5 million donation from the valley foundation, in addition to a previous donation of more than $3 million. the unveiling took place as nursing students, both past and present, looked on. the money will provide the school of nursing with a much needed lab that will assimilate life like illnesses to learn how to better treat patients. they are working hard to acquire other donations within the college. >> we hope we have a naming for journalism mass communications for public health and all the departments. and my job, as dean, is to do what i can to raise funds. >> in a time where the university is strapped for cash, it may be the solution to california's continuing budget crisis. students got down to their underpants tuesday for the annual underdid i run. it was part of take back the night. the sjsu awareness campaign for sexual assault awareness month. dozens of students, both men and women, wore nothing but underwear this week. they ran, jogged and walk through am pus. the event that got students down to their bare minimum was put on to signify just because they were in their intmats, predators should not take that as permission. >> sexual assault is never okay. it doesn't matter what a girl's wearing or a guy's wearing. >> i think it is a good message you can be completely naked. it is not an invitation, basically. >> the underwear run started in europe. this is sustainability week. sjsu students are haerning how being green can help them make green at the same time. >> a panel discussion on green thursday included professionals. including representatives from the epa. students learned about the sector of the green economy and the event was sponsored by the s just js u career center. >> i think it is nice to hear from people working in the job, what those jobs were like, how you get started. what better way to find information, and from the source. >> one of the panel was sjsu alum is. students were able to meet with the panelists and said they would appreciate more events like this, in the future. >> no matter how much the panel tried to bring across their., there is a limited amount of time. and if the information gets repetitive, it is useful for students to catch the whole thing 2001. >> students who still want to learn more are always welcome to stop by the career center the and the administration building. the university project is a collaborative effort designed to bootstrap a community. sjsu citizens manned the operations. kyle stephens has the report. >> reporter: political science students showed up saturday for a day of learning just off highway 101 in the district known as five rivers. >> they enjoy this beautiful trail from williams street to julian street and that is our goal. >> reporter: among the clean up crew were younger members. the program aims to instill in them a sense of community ownership. >> like a the lot of younger kids out there, we are setting an example, and actually setting the tone for what they need to be doing and the expectations they need to have for their future. >> reporter: just over 12 cubic yards of trash were collected, suggesting the broken windows theory the idea neglect begets neglect has had residents clean up. >> having 70 people do the entire trail way, it was just tremendous. >> reporter: city council member sam teaches one of the sjsu classes here today. he was picking up trash with the rest. >> it is is a community investment to really revitalize this community in a positive way. >> reporter: student volunteering becomes more of just an activity and hopefully a way of life. >> hopefully the students that participated today, this will become more than a class project, it will become part of who they are. >> reporter: part sparing the air for earth week at san jose state brought students together for fun. alternate forms of transportation, some pretty strange, were there. wheelbarrows, scooters, and big wheeled bikes were all part of the excitement at the bay breaks event. the crowd cheered on dozens of in san jose state students as they sat around in front of the associated students house in a series of relay race activities, where teams of five demonstrated different interesting forms of transportation. and at the end, george michael's team came in for the win. beta breaks here on campus was brought together by the bay area quality management district and san hoe say state university's environmental resource center. the biggest contributor is driving hard everywhere. tampa state is a commuter school. we are trying to get people to use mass transit. >> a demo brand of electric bicycles were there. the students enjoyed free food while learning about transportation. 511.org's charlotte simpson informed students where they can connect with cardboard. >> everyone needs to be aware and participate. >> reporter: sjsu transportation solutions manager told students about the benefits of alternate forms of transportation. >> not only is it a health environment, students take money, also in a very major way, and it reduces traffic and impact on the parking facilities. >> in the bay area, cars and trucks are the number one source of air pollution. on the average weekdays there are three to four million cars. but a simple act like car pooling, can make a difference. this year's car represents the culmination of past design efforts. the international society of auto engineering hosts a yearly competition for schools across the country to let students take learning from the draft board to the racetrack. the team has reaped the benefits of many donations. >> we have been fortunate to get a lot of material sponsorship, and that really makes a hughes difference. we can make parts, essentially. no matter how much money is put into the design, it is still students's hard work and ingenuity that makes the car great. cars are judged on various criteria, including the design itself and the team's understanding of how it all work. the competition will take place june 15th to the 18th in california. later on, in update news, we'll introduce you to a new women's basketball coach. kyle stephens joins us after the graduate. but i'm not counting. and now, for news out in the real world. more tornadoes are in the forecast for the south and midwest. at least 200 tornadoes were reported in the last three days, last week causing destruction all the way from mississippi to maryland. the series of tornadoes left at least 4500 people dead and that is not the end of it. more are forecast in areas in the same 15 states that are still attempting to clean up the damage. this is the largest single system tornado outbreak in united states history. president obama declared a federal state of emergency in parts of oklahoma, mississippi, north carolina and all of alabama last week. meteorologist graduate student henry bartholomew said tornadoes are caused by a cold front from the rockies, which collide with the warm air from the south. tornadoes really are pretty rare. a lot of americans have never seen a tornado. you know, they have seen thunderstorms, they have seen lightning, hail. but tornadoes require really special conditions. >> the weather forecasting serves predicts up to 300 more tornadoes are on the way. there is still more than a year leaf until the 2012 presidential elections. one candidate potential is best known for telling you, you are fired. donald trump is considering making a run for the oval office next year. this weekend the donald will be head like a tea party rally in florida. and although travel calendar looks serious, many people still doubt if trump's run is. trump has been accused of not being interested in politics, but simply trying to best the ratings for his show, the apprentice. nonetheless, some are excited by trump's run. >> he has an interesting aspect he is bringing with business experience, rather than political experience. right now we are so used to the old politicians, so we'll see what donald trump can bring. right now cnn shows trump in a tie with mike huckabee. president obama stopped in the bay area for just 24 hours this week and his first stop, the place where college students congregate. facebook. only he wasn't just online wednesday, the president was at palo alto firm in person. students watched the town hall address streaming from their laptops on campus. this is the first time a president has used facebook or any social networking site to address the students. the blue walls are did getting a makeover. art students came out to paint portraits on the walls on went. curious students admired the pictures and complimented the artists as they painted. it is a unique way of adding life to the depressing walls. >> they love this. and we nicknamed the wall better than blue. people come by and say that is way better than that blue wall. a lot of fun, too. art students are expected to continue painting the walls until 2013, or as long as the expansion fences are in place. now let's take things over to kyle stephens and what happened in arts and entertainment this week. >> reporter: i'll let you know. a a seedy bar, and nazis. the sunnyvale community players are putting on cabaret for audiences to enjoy. >> life is a cabaret. the sunnyvale community players are putting on their take of the 166 broadway production. the story following the writer who arrives in berlin to cure his writer's block, but he ends up falling in love with sally bowls. he was initially nervous because of how the audience could potentially react. >> the challenge is trying to do it in a way that is true to myself, but also to not disappoint certain who have a certain expectation. >> reporter: even show she has not lived a life as dramatic as her character. she can still relate to it. >> living as long as i have, i have gone through a lot of these emotions she is going through. >> reporter: emily bliss play's sally, she is excited to be in the show, playing such an interesting character. >> she is just larger than life. if you could put just the word ridiculous in a human being, that is what sally is. which makes it fun, because you don't have to hold back. >> reporter: the cast has been rehearsing since the end of march and members say they are more than an audience. >> it is done across the world, because it is a wonderful, thought provoking beautiful piece, and scary piece of theater -e the show will run until may 15th. now it is time for after the week. there is a you? spin on the popular mobile game angry birds. our friends are back in angry birds rio. it is the same game you love, playing on you on the streets of rio this time. the birds are out to take out smugglers. the app is available in around droid and -- in android and app stores. and speaking of rio, our hero was captured as a chick in the jungle of brazil and ended up in the midwest, where he grew up with his owner, linda. one day he explains to linda blue is the late male of the species and he wants to mate him with the last male in brazil. rio falls made the same conventional man made features. color and in this case wonderful characters. it is the characters who bring it to life. parents stay occupied while the kids enjoy the -- the actions of the characters. i haven't had this much fun watching a bunch of room since the tiki room at disneyland. the series recurring ghost comes back again. the knife slashes, the blood flows and the killer is around every corner. this is in screen four. it wasn't a bad movie. but it wasn't a very good movie either. it is a slasher movie. the sheer motives of the character was where the movie fell flat. if you can't shock with substance, do it can style, right? there is only a few scares and nothing that hasn't been done before. nothing executed in a flu way. to answer the question what is my scariest movie? it is not this one. back to you, ladies. thanks, kyle. we are days away from the shepherd's pie, before heading to game so the activity brings a lot more money for bar and creates interest. >> other bars and restaurants have seen a boost in sales. >> we doubled our sales usually on a weekend night or something, we'll do $6000 or $7000. we have been doing double ta. it is a lot more packed. >> for some restaurant owners and managers, it is not just about the profits, but about the atmosphere as well. >> a lot more lively. you see people come out one person in particular brings out his hat with a siren on it. >> home or away, fans can be found at the pushes, bars restaurants around the tank, cheering their team and enjoying the downtown atmosphere. as the city's biggest and most well-known professional team, it comes as no surprise these fans are dedicated and emotional when it comes to the sharks. >> we have had guys cry. people love the sharks, especially down here. >> reporter: erin sterner, update news. after several consecutive losing seasons, the san jose state women's basketball team announced wednesday it hired a new coach. tim le coast pre placed coach pam d'costa, who resigned -- replaced coach pam d'costa, who resigned. >> i want to bring winning ways to san jose state. >> reporter: he is excited about working here because it is a step up. he hopes to get more students involved in athletics. the spartans defeated lou tech by a score of 8-0. the team will do battle in the state cap on friday, a pril 2nd, at 2:30 p.m. the spartans schedule was release this had week. one of those include a nationally televised game on friday. that's right friday, october 16th. finally the 2011 nfl draft will begin. with that come my predictions on who will land where. let's begin with the panthers on the clock as we will end up taking marcel darius from alabama who brings size and power in a much needed line. the broncos will select patrick peterson, who will become an immediate starter next to champ bailey and can play starter. at number three the bills need a rushing linebacker and take vaughn milner texas a & m. cincinnati is on the clock at number four. and chooses none other than cam newton from auburn. cam will benefit from having chad ochocinco to start. a draft isn'tsy draft without the two bay area teams. the niners select prince from nebraska and the raiders select stefan from penn state. that is it. ladies, back to you. the
