Well, we begin this half hour with a violent start to the new year. An intense manhunt now under way for the shooter who unleashed terror in a nightclub in turkey. The gunman opened fire on revelers, turning the celebration into a massacre, leaving at least 39 people dead. We get the latest now from abcs mark remillard. Reporter Security Camera video catches the gunman at work, bullets ricochetting in the streets, people running for their lives, the shooter stalking the nightclub entrance, killing a policeman and another person before barreling through the front door. Inside, we see a gunman in white wearing a hood. Authorities believe the attacker changed clothes. He stayed inside for seven murderous minutes, shooting at the crowd that had gathered, an estimated 600 people. At least 39 people dead, including more than two dozen foreigners. The club popular with tourists, dozens more injured, including american jake rock from delaware who was shot in the leg. I dont know. I saw one person there shooting. Im hiding. Reporter earlier in the evening, people were celebrating the new year with sparklers and confetti. Then people were falling down because of shooting. It was a terrible thing. Reporter my husband told me to get on the ground. Then a man came, this woman says. On my right, left, everyone was crying. The smell of gun powder was everywhere. The u. S. And turkey calling it a terrorist attack. Theres been no claim of responsibility, but Turkish Police sources tell abc news they believe the shooter was a trained isis fighter. The nightclub. Its a target. Its a symbol of secular decadence that makes it very attractive to jihadie terrorists. Reporter as families bury their loved ones, the u. S. Consulate warning americans to shelter in place. Mark remillard, abc news, new york. The Russian Diplomats ordered out of the u. S. By president obama have left the country. The president also ordered new sanctions on russian spy agencies for the hacking of political sites during the u. S. President ial election. President elect donald trump is back in new york where hes set to meet with intelligence officials this week to find out more about hacking evidence against russia. North koreas hinting that its about to test a longrange missile. North Korean Leader kim jongun announced that preparations for launching an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile for the first time have reached the final stage and says his country will boost its military capabilities further, unless the u. S. Ends joint military exercises with south korea. In texas, there are still questions about a new years eve tragedy. The midair collision of two small planes near a small Airport North of dallas. At least three dead after two planes collide and fall into a dallas suburb. The fiery wreckage caught on camera. I just dont know that theres any chance they could make it. Reporter cell phone video capturing flames and a dark plume of smoke as one plane crashes into a storage unit. A plane crashed. Reporter the other on to this busy street. It looked like they were doing acrobatic maneuvers. It looked like one of the wings had been clipped off. Reporter the scene so tough to watch, you can hear someone in this video telling a little girl to close her eyes. Charles drexler was at his storage unit and shot this video. They hit so hard. You could tell that they were going really fast and it was a big explosion. Reporter the crash happening just one mile from this small airport, when 1 of 20,000 now nontowered airports across the country. There is no directing traffic. The faa confirms they were operating under visual flight rules, meaning visibility must be several miles so pilots see issues and avoid them. It could be a while to continue the investigation because of the crash site and a wide debris field across a populated area. One man says he took cover as pieces of the planes fell from the sky. Adrienne bankert, mckinney, texas. Apple is being sued over a fatal car crash in texas in which a driver was allegedly distracted by facetime. Mariah modisette died in the crash on Christmas Eve of 2014 after another driver crashed into the back of her familys car. The driver told Police Allegedly that he was using facetime at the time of the wreck. The family alleges that the tech giant failed to install a feature that could have prevented the driver from using the app. No word yet from apple about the lawsuit. And the new year brought some snow to seattle, several inches in some places. Oh, and this was tough. Seatac airport was one of the hardest hit places. Were bracing for storms in the deep south, damaging winds, possibility of flash flooding to occur, and there is a real threat of tornadoes throughout mississippi, alabama, louisiana, down towards new orleans, shreveport, all along i20 as well as down towards the houston area. Were concerned about this because we have much warmer air and a cold front thats pushing through that will really kick that off. To the north, were concerned about 6 to 12 inches of snow throughout the dakotas, up throughout northern portions of minnesota. Then cold air will advance throughout the week and overtake the entire country and drop temperatures in a dramatic fashion. Well have temperatures at Single Digits for the highs throughout the midwest. Well, times square this morning probably the cleanest its been in ages. I was actually there yesterday. Really . And its always amazing to go to times square on new years day. How do they do it . Looking at it today, you wouldnt know that about 30 hours ago, about a million, thats right, a million partiers spent the day penned into that tiny area. Now were shown how this miracle occurred. Reporter for millions of americans, its all about that moment. When the iconic ball drops and over 3 3,000 pounds of confetti sail through the sky. But what does it take to clean up after one of the biggest parties in the world . For the times square alliance, the real fireworks start just after midnight. As an army of 180 sanitation workers descend on the aftermath. Flanked by 50 street sweepers and garbage trucks. Not even six hours later, 52 tons of party hats, confetti and debris have vanished. The ball drops at midnight, and then by literally 6 00 in the morning on the first, the department of sanitation from the city of new york has done an amazing job picking up so much of the trash thats out there. And it really looks like there hadnt been a Million People in times square the day before. Reporter and thats just the trash. Miles and miles of cables. Were Building Three stages, extra platforms. And literally within 24 hours, the stages come down and times square is back to normal. The confettis disappeared its all been taken care of. Reporter but taken care of doesnt always mean disposed of. Tens of thousands of those little slips of confetti actually have handwritten wishes on them, and not everyones so quick to throw them away. My wife and i every year reach into the sky and pull down a wish together and we read it together and take it home with us, and we hope it comes true. But i will say, when i was in times square yesterday, there was still some confetti stuck to the ground. Come on, now it takes time to finish this. I know, but its part of the fun. It was kind of cool to see it, like it was just new years eve here. What time was that, marci, would you say . When i was there . Because they were cleaning up 2 00, 3 00 in the morning. I was there in the evening and i was working, so back off some people stand in times square to celebrate the new year, but you know, in some other areas, more hardy souls, you would call them, decided to celebrate by plunging into icy water. And we now know more about an american who was wounded in the violence. And donald trump questioning the governments evidence about russias alleged hacking during the election. Reporter gunshots and chaos in istanbul, graphic videos capturing the moments during a gunmans rampage, both outside, and the terrifying moments inside a popular nightclub. Here you can see the killer holding his weapon, walking around. A witness turned on his cell phone, trying to hide near several parked cars. A different angle from the club door, people ducking and running, then a ricochet off the railing as the gunman approaches, firing one last shot at the man in red before going inside. [ sirens ] by the time the first ambulances arrived, it was too late for the dozens killed at the scene. I dont know. I saw one person there shooting. Im hiding. Reporter now a massive manhunt is under way for the gunman who escaped and anyone else involved. This man says he made eye contact with the shooter as he arrived. He says the killer first targeted police and security, then bystanders. A local resident says many people mistook gunshots for new years fireworks and rushed to the scene. People were falling down. Reporter the turkish Prime Minister visited with survivors in the hospital, one man telling him it happened fast. As soon as he heard gunshots, he got down on the ground.
