The scene where the confrontation took place has been reopened after being washed down by authorities. They are now looking into the life of the 29yearold former marine from kansas city, missouri. They say he was a lone gunman. Sources tell us he had two firearms, an assault style rifle and a semiautomatic pistol. We have details from baton rouge. [ gunfire ] reporter target blue, again. Trying to leave the scene. He was running with an Assault Rifle in his hand. [ gunfire ] reporter as reinforcements arrived, a fierce gunfight breaks out and the gunman goes down. Officers engaged the subject at that particular time, and he ultimately died at the scene. Reporter but not before killing three officers. Bad garafola, Montrell Jackson, and Matthew Gerald. Federal Officials Say the shooter was 29yearold gavin eugene long, an African American exmarine. Authorities in kansas city, missouri, scouring his home for clues. We as a nation have to be loud and clear that nothing justifies violence against Law Enforcement. Reporter this as baton rouge is still reeling from the killing of alton sterling. Nearly two weeks ago he was shot by police during this struggle. Video of that event along with the shooting of Philando Castile in minnesota set off nationwide protests. Authorities now believe that long acted alone. Two people they had previously been questioning were released without charges filed. But authorities still caution they dont know what his motive was. When the gunfire was over, three officers were dead, three others injured. A 29yearold former marine was killed at that scene. Good morning, we begin with our top story, a multistate investigation is underway looking into an attack on Police Officers in baton rouge. This as we learn the identities of the officers killed, as well as the gunman. Montrell jackson was 32 years old. He was a member of the baton rouge Police Department for a decade. 41yearold Matthew Gerald was with the department for less than a year. And brad garafalo was 45. He had been with the east Baton Rouge Sheriffs Office for 24 years. Authorities say he acted alone. Theyre unaware of a motive. His deployment to iraq ended in 2009. Eva pilgrim on what were learning. Reporter baton rouge reeling. Reporter a lady came up and said there was a suspect walking in a coat with a Assault Rifle behind the store. Reporter reports of a man dressed in black with a rifle a mile from police headquarters. Brady danzel was on his way to work. When i looked to the right, there was a man running my direction away from the body with an Assault Rifle in his hand. As soon as we got eye contact at one another, he stopped in his tracks and turned around and started sprinting the other way. Reporter police cars speeding to the scene, s. W. A. T. Teams moving in. Sterlings family released a statement saying they are disgusted by what they call the despicable act of violence. They went on to say all they wanted was for their community to have peace. He urged americans to tamp down inflammatory words and actions and called on the nation to temper our words and open our hearts. The president seemed to issue a warning ahead of two weeks worth of political conventions saying careless accusations should not be thrown around to score political points. Hillary clinton is also condemning the deadly attack on police in baton rouge, calling it an assault on all of us. Its one way of blocking the highways and many of the roadways. They do have other snowplows in the downtown area that are meant to help with security. Matthew gerald was 41. He had been with the department for less than a year. And 45yearold brad garafala spent more than ten years with the office. The shooter was a former marine from kansas city. Authorities say he had two weapons, an Assault Rifle and semiautomatic pistol. Authorities responded to a 911 call about a man Walking Around from the rifle. Initially they didnt know where he was. After several minutes he was located and killed at the scene. Not only were those three officers killed. Three others were injured. One critically. Police say the gunman acted alone.
