Comey would only promise to be honest, but President Trump flatly denied that ever happened. Did you ask that question . No, no, i didnt, but i dont think it would be a bad question to ask. I think loyalty to the country, loyalty to the United States is important. Reporter the two men also apparently disagree over whether comey tells the president he was not under investigation as trump asserted in that letter firing comey. I know that im not under investigation. Me, personally. Im not talking about campaigns. Im not talking about anything else. Im not under investigation. Probably not standing alone but were beginning to see a lot of different pieces of evidence so we have the president saying that it sounds like he asked on three different occasions whether he himself was the subject of an investigation. You have the firing which again the president himself tied to the russia investigation. You have this tweet which could be construed as at least sending a message to former director comey to be careful about what he says. So i think when you have all of this kind of coming together, its not inconceivable that these could sort of form the foundation of an obstruction of justice inquiry depending on what comes next. It feels like were still early in this saga. Lets talk about that tweet. Trump says that comey better hope that there arent tapes of comey. Could that be perceived as a threat and is taping even legal . I think some people are construing it as a threat and again i think that standing alone probably not but in the context of Everything Else weve seen in the last week potentially so. In terms of the taping itself, it turns out that the rules on this are different in different places. D. C. Is whats called a oneparty jurisdiction, so as long as one party to a conversation knows that its being recorded, its actually not illegal to record the conversation. So recording itself isnt the problem. If, in fact, they have, and we obviously decent know for sure. But you could have on the tapes evidence of wrongdoing, destruction of the tapes if Something Like that ever happened could itself be illegal potentially criminal so there are a whole bunch of legal questions that this potential taping then opens up. Having tapes opens up a whole can of worms. So let me just ask you quickly about theres this fantasy among diehard liberals right now that this could be the beginning of what leads to impeachment. Is that even in the realm of possibility . In the realm of possibility, i would say yes. Again, not just these facts but once you start to pull on the strings of Something Like this, you dont necessarily know what youre going to find. So one of the articles of impeachment against president nixon involved obstruction of justice. One of the articles of impeachment against president clinton also involved obstruction, so it is certainly possible down the road. That said its much less likely when you have both parties of congress controlled by republicans. Votes not there right now. What would you say to the hardcore Trump Supporters who cokie just referenced who feel that this whole thing is hyperventilation and hypocrisy on the part of liberals . I would say stop enabling him. We need a president who can be capable of unifying this country in a time of crisis. We need a president who has some sort of credibility. We need a president who can act president ial, and by going out and defending, by going out and justifying, by going out and trying to reinforce his lies, you are not helping this man transform into that president. I think the real question is going to be what happens with Republican Leaders in congress. And theyve been kind of moving around on this, you know, theyd like to get a legislative agenda through. They were feeling pretty good after the house passed their health care bill, although thats a little bit dicey for them too, but theyre not quite sure where to go right now. And so youre seeing the heads of the intelligence committees saying, okay, lets proceed with this investigation. Youre seeing the speaker of the house kind of just backing away altogether and other republicans in the senate keeping their options open. Its no accident that the president is talking about john cornyn, the majority whip of the senate, as an fbi director because that would be an easy confirmation. And hes done that repeatedly, picked people out of congress because theyre easy to confirm. But, you know, this is going to be a tough time for republicans in Congress Going forward. Well, i got to tell you, i am brokenhearted as a republican to see the silence, to hear the silence from so many leaders in my party with some very honorable exceptions like senator ben sasse, like senator john mccain, and i would just say to republicans, ask yourselves, put your hand on your heart because you are americans before you are republicans and ask yourselves what would you be saying and doing if it had been Hillary Clinton who had done this . Were aware that a number of nhs organizations have reported that they have suffered from the ransomware attack. A federal judge has ruled tad cummins, the former tennessee teacher accused of taking his 15yearold former student, will remain behind bars. No, we did not think he was a flight risk. Reporter the court ruling hes both a flight risk and a danger to the community. Cummins and Elizabeth Thomas missing for 38 days crossing the country. An fbi agent taking the stand to testify about alleged details of their journey. Investigators have said that he left you a note. He did. Reporter this note submitted in court as written by tad cummins for his wife writing, ill be back. Dont call police. Theyll think i ran because im guilty and im not. I love you. Authorities say cummins and Elizabeth Thomas left columbia, tennessee, and went south to decatur, alabama, stopping there to throw their phones into the tennessee river. Cummins then disabled the gps on his suv. Authorities say the pair continued on to mississippi then northwest to oklahoma where they were caught on this walmart security camera. Staying in super 8 motels like this one before going on to colorado, utah, nevada and eventually southern california.
