And College Football kickoff. Its a brandnew era for the first time a playoff to determine the National Champion. Im in. Well be in. No doubt. And the fight for this trophy is under way. Im live in texas with all the gameday excitement. Hey, good morning, everybody. And not only is this the start of the big labor day weekend, but its also the day when College Football goes into high gear. And paula faris will be covering it all from the set of espn gameday in ft. Worth, texas. There she is. Paula, what do you have for us coming up . Listen to this, dan. It is a new day, a new era in College Football. Look at all the fans that showed up so early in the morning to celebrate, but out with the old, in with the new. Were talking about a College Football playoff for the very first time, and, of course, were here at Espns College Gameday set in ft. Worth set to tell you what this means and who could be hosting the trophy come january 12th of next year. The question about those fans, did they show up early or were they there all night . Well get to that later. I think the latter. The latter. Thats my guess. Much more from paula coming up and from those fans. But were going to start here with our top story as we head into this long holiday weekend, president obama is now trying to reassure americans about the threat from isis. One of our closest allies, great britain, has just raised its Terror Threat level, so should we follow suit . Could isis actually hit us here at home . Lets go straight now to the white house and abcs jeff zeleny. Jeff, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. Youre right, the president is trying to strike that balance between warning and reassuring americans as his team is still weighing how to confront the rising threat of islamic extremism thats hitting closer to home. This morning, strong comments from president obama about the threat from the militant Islamic Group isis. Speaking to supporters on friday, he says the world has always been messy, but images on social media of beheadings, mass executions and attacks have only heightened our fears. The president also saying we will get through these challenging times just like we have in the past. The president s words coming just as the United Kingdom raised its terror level threat to severe. Fearing the risk of an attack is highly unlikely. Were facing a deeper threat to our security than we have known before. Reporter no changes in u. S. Reporter here on no changes is u. S. Warnings. This morning, there are rising concerns about homegrown american recruits to isis. Weve now seen where some individuals start to branch out and travel to other hot spots around the globe, obviously syria being one of them. Reporter even though the fbi and department of Homeland Security say theyre unaware of any specific credible threat. Online music videos like this one from an american rapper. This goes out to all my soldiers Freedom Fighters reporter are an increasingly way to recruit new fighters to the jihadi movement. They slaughter us like annals now its time for that beast to bite em. Black fashions we worldwide syria to atlanta recruiting friends and friends of friends. Reporter back in washington president obama and his advisers are weighing their options, not threatening or ruling out military strikes like this one. I dont want to put the cart before the horse. We dont have a strategy yet. Reporter but its those six words from the president , we dont have a strategy yet, that still is causing him political grief. Republicans say hes indecisive but white house officials tell me hes simply trying to send the message hes not rushing into another war. Dan. A lot more to come, jeff zeleny, thank you. Moving on this morning were learning a lot more about the condition of joan rivers, the hollywood legend whose career has been equal parts, comedy, controversy and cosmetic surgery. See stopped breathing during an outpatient procedure on thursday. She was rushed to mt. Sinai hospital here in new york city and that is where we find abcs linzie janis with the very latest this morning. Linzie, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. She was having a procedure on her throat when she went into cardiac arrest. Shes been in a medically induced coma here at mt. Sinai ever since and this morning no word on her chances of making a full recovery. This morning sources tell abc news that joan rivers lay unconscious in a new york city hospital. Doctors keeping her sedated until they are more comfortable with her condition. The comedian has been under supervision for nearly 48 hours, since thursday morning when she was rushed to the hospital after suffering cardiac arrest during a procedure at an endoscopy clinic. Doctors say her recovery likely hinges on how long she was without oxygen. Every minute that the brain goes without good oxygenated blood flow can potentially cause serious damage. Reporter Melissa Rivers describing her 81yearold mothers condition as serious and asking for prayers. Just hours before her procedure, rivers was on a new york city stage making people laugh in typical joan fashion. I saw whats going on under my chin. I dont want to be the one the president has to pardon on thanksgiving. Reporter and less than a week ago, the legendary funny woman and tv icon was dishing out red carpet jokes on e s fashion police. The legs go on and on and on like Gwyneth Paltrow when someone asks her about kale. Reporter rivers has always been open about health discussing a scare last year on her we tv reality show, joan and melissa joan knows best. We have to go for a c. A. T. Scan and wait to see whether or not its benign. Reporter showing humor was not only what made her the happiest. I wont make jokes, right. Ill make a few but i wont make jokes. Reporter but also what gets her through lifes tough times. Sorry. Oysters at lunch. Just reporter the always entertaining often controversial rivers has received an outpouring of support from her celebrity friends from Ellen Degeneres to donald trump. Dan, a lot of people speculating that if its possible to pull through this, then she can do it. I think i would heartily endorse that speculation. There are a lot of people pulling for her. Thank you for your reporting. You may notice here on the set this morning we have a little bit of a different configuration. Sara filling in to my right which is always nice and ron in his usual perch giving us the news. Good morning. Good morning to you, dan. Good morning, sara. Good morning, everyone. We begin in nicaragua where a desperate search is under way right now to rescue several trapped miners. Rescue crews have been working around the clock to reach the gold miners stuck underground for more than 24 hours. 22 of the 26 workers have managed to get out alive after the mine collapsed. Authorities were alerted. The landslide late thursday after losing contact with the workers who are believed to be about 165 feet below the surface. And now to the crisis in the ukraine. Ukrainian forces say one of their fighter jets has been shot down by a Russian Missile in the eastern part of that country. This as european Foreign Ministers say thousands of russian troops, thousands of them are inside ukraine. More than previously thought. Russian officials denied that they have any troops in ukraine. One russian official says satellite images purporting to show Russian Ground forces inside ukraine were from a computer game. And a man is an escaped prisoner and sheriffs say deqwon blackmon somehow managed to get away from officers who were transporting him to a local Detention Center running into the nearby woods. That suspect, police say, blackmon, who is facing attempted murder charges, is unarmed but very dangerous. And take a look at this video. Its a yacht captured on a cell phone video. A huge yacht on fire in texas. The 45foot vessel was engulfed in flames just as it was going under the bridge. Everyone on board managed to escape. The owner was reportingly showing off the yacht to a potential buyer when it went up in flames. A wild spinout during the last practice run for the indy car series in fontana, california, very wild. Russian indy driver Mikhail Aleshin was attempting to turn turn four there and somehow lost control, amazing there, crashing into three other cars. Aleshins the first russian to ever race in the indy car series is in serious condition. Three other drivers were not seriously hurt. The indy car series final takes place tonight. And finally, president obama is taking on his critics this time for his fashion statement also known as tangate. The president lit up social media or his attire did after he decided to don a light tan suit during a press conference on thursday. During a visit to rhode island yesterday, friday, the president has switched back to a dark suit, but he said he liked the tan suit and chose a light color in his words to claim every bit of summer he can. And it looks like a fan agreed giving him a highfive during his arrival. And i checked some of the comments about his tan suit online were sad, terrible and whacked. I like it. Let the guy do his job and keep picking on his clothing. We had a little bit of a who wore it better this morning. A little bit of a split screen that oh, really . Well show you between president obama and this guy, ron claiborne. Who wore it better . I win. I win. I like his. Its not whacked. Its not terrible. Its not sad. Yes. You are never any of those things, ron. Thank you. Just for the record. Thank you. Thank you, ron. At least not because of what i wear. Right, exactly. Exactly. Never for any reason. Just to be clear. Nascar star tony stewart will be back on the track for his first race since this now infamous incident three weeks ago. You may remember this. He hit and killed a fellow driver. After weeks in seclusion stewart came to the cameras on friday showing a side of himself we rarely get to see, and abcs gio benitez is on the story. Reporter this morning an emotional tony stewart is trying to push past the crash that killed 20yearold racer kevin ward jr. On a dirt track in upstate new york. This has been one of the toughest tragedies ive ever had to deal with both professionally and personally. This is his first public appearance following the accident. That video still hard to watch. Ward getting out of his car after an initial accident apparently waving his hand at stewart when moments later his car strikes and kills ward. This is a sadness and a pain that i hope no one ever has to experience in their life. Reporter now three weeks later stewart is practicing for tomorrows sprint cup race and the nascar champ says he will try to meet with wards family. I want kevins father, kevin jr. And his mother pam and his sisters, kristi and kayla and kaitlyn to know that every day im thinking about him and praying for them. Reporter the driver phone known for his hot temper on the track now subdued off it, not taking questions from the press and returning to his car, number 14, for the first time in tomorrows race at the atlanta motor speedway. Stewart has not been criminally charged. Investigators say so far theres no evidence that he should be. But this morning, sports analysts wonder should a grieving stewart race at all . The fact that the police have not yet completed their investigation and yet hes coming back to the track, it just seems wrong. Reporter for Good Morning America, gio benitez, abc news, new york. Gio, thank you. And now to a very different race involving drones and the Competition Among some of the worlds tech giants to deliver products straight to your door in a whole new way. Check out this video from google. Hot on the heels of a drone unveiled by amazon not long ago, so could this ever really happen and would it actually be safe . Abcs bazi kanani has more. Reporter its googles turn to take to the skies with project wing. It is sort of the first prototype that we want to stand behind and a reliable system that can do autonomous delivery. Reporter two years in the making, the tech giants latest brainchild is gearing up for takeoff, but google is only the latest company to announce plans to one day offer drone to door delivery. Amazons Ceo Jeff Bezos unveiling its drone on cbs 60 minutes late last year. We can carry objects we think up to five pounds which covers 86 of the items we deliver. Reporter unlike amazon prime air, googles drone drops a rope thats attached to the parcel and has fewer spinning blades and looking more like a miniature jet. Its all part of a trend that seems like something out of the jetsons. From a sushi restaurant in london to a wisconsin brewery. But its future is still up in the air with concerns ranging from privacy to aviation safety. It could hit an engine, take out an engine. Reporter the faa telling abc news overnight theyre aware of googles proposal and have had discussions with the company but currently all commercial use of Unmanned Aircraft is against the agencys regulation. The next phase is to drive it towards the enabling of the dream of delivering stuff more quickly. When amazon announced its drone testing nine months ago, many shrugged it off at the time, considered it a pr stunt but analysts say google has the lobbying power and the finances to get regulations changed and to perfect the technology and they say that means that those delivery doans could be at our doorsteps before too long. Dan. A brave new world. Bazi, thank you. Absolutely. As we mentioned earlier, the College Football season kicks into full gear today, and its the start of a brave new era for the league, one designed to answer the prayers of frustrated fans. Lets get it back to my coanchor paula faris in ft. Worth, texas. Paula, good morning once again. Good morning once again to you, dan, and, you know, believe it or not, even the politicians in washington could agree on this, the old system to determine a College Champion just wasnt working, so this is their attempt to fix it at the end of the season, four teams and hopefully one of your teams, right, four teams will compete for a chance to hoist this trophy. Out with the crystal and in with the good. The oft maligned bowl championship series is no more. For the first time ever, the National Champion of College Football will be the winner of a playoff tournament. But dont get too excited about the bracketology. The newly minted College Football playoffs will feature just four teams in two rounds to determine who plays in that championship game. Youre going to have to win that game plus two games now to win a National Championship, so this will be much more challenging, i think, than its ever been before. Reporter a committee of 13 including archie manning, legendary coach Barry Alvarez and even former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice will meet weekly to score teams on an array of criteria including strength of schedule, headtohead competition, common opponents and even injured players. But with so much controversy surrounding the bcs, which drew years of scorn from sportscasters the bcs as we know it comes to an end, and i couldnt be happier. Reporter president s. Im fed up with these computer rankings and this and that and the other. Reporter and even congressional hearings. Drop the c and call it the bs system. Reporter how is the new system being received . No more computers to keep us out. Were definitely in. Im in. Well be in. No doubt. Okay, so are you ready for this . The official name is the College Football playoff National Championship trophy presented by dr. Pepper. Let me take a deep breath now. Its about three feet tall. Made of gold, bronze and steel and took the craftsmen, dan about three months to perfect. One team will be hoisting this january 12th, 2015. I tried to lift it but i was scolded so i wont try that again. Dan. It took them slightly longer to make that trophy than it did for you to pronounce the name of the championship. Paula, well get back to you in the next half hour, thank you for braving it out there. We should say that there is a full day of football on tap on abc and espn culminating with the National Champion Florida State taking on Oklahoma State in the advocare cowboys classic at 8 00 p. M. Here on espn. Now for something completely different, the star of this next story is this baby girl born by a rare emergency csection just a few months ago at the San Diego Zoo and sara has all the details. I have watched this new video over and over again and cant get enough of it. Its even better and a little sweeter knowing her entry into the world was a little rocky but shes made it a much cuter place to be for sure. San diego zoos baby gorilla joanne is growing up and ready to make her grand entrance becoming more active and taking fewer naps. Watch as shes holding on for dear life but riding proudly atop mommy amanis back. When amani is awake and doing things, joanne is very interested in it, so youll see her riding on amanis back around the exhibit and as soon as she pauses, shell be reaching for things. Reporter joanne was born on march 12th after a rare emergency csection. Since birth, joanne learned to roll over and prop herself up. Just like human babies while teething, she began to mouth items within her reach, but joanne is now sampling solid foods. Her favorite so far, kale and grapes cut in half. And just like any other new kid in the neighborhood, joanne is learning the fine art of playing with the other young gorillas at the zoo. Frank, hes pretty curious about holding joanne. He wants to carry her around the exhibit. Reporter while joanne is always under amanis watchful eye shes testing her limits and exploring her habitat and imitating moms behaviors. Not ready to take on all those new gorilla adventures, she hangs on to mom while swinging on a rope playing with logs and hanging out by moms side while eating a meal but just like all little ones, they dont stay little for long. Watch as joanne takes off with some of her first steps. This gorilla is ready to take on the world one baby step at a time. All ive got to say is, oh, its so cute. Its so cute. And if it takes a viral video either a baby or an animal, take a baby animal, and youve nailed it. Absolutely. Joanne is adorable. Thanks for doing that. We appreciate it. Lets get the forecast from meteorologist Stephanie Roberts visiting from our abc station in sarasota, florida. Good morning. Can you top joanne . I cant top baby animals. You can never go wrong there, good morning, everybody. We do have problems to talk about along the northern gulf coast. Tropical rains are moving into the area. We are expecting downpours today and we could see as much as 4 inches of rain in some spots. Chicago, youre starting out a little bit cloudy this morning and spotty showers not out of the question but i think well be okay for the north coast music fest and also for the fireworks tonight at navy pier. Things will improve throughout the day. Were watching a Severe Weather threat today in the Northern Plains but that Severe Weather threat is going to spread to the east as we go into tomorrow. May see some damaging winds and a lot of rain, more than 2 inches in minneapolis yesterday. Its picture perfect in the northeast. Great day in new york. And if youre hanging out with paula there in dallas, its going to be hot fo back to you, dan. Thank you. Back to you, dan. Thank you. And coming up here on gma, a toy story of a sinister variety. A lot of excited fans here for the big matchup on abce between the defending state National Champions the Florida State seminoles and Oklahoma State but were also talking about the unveiling of the College Football playoffs, so much energy, four teams will be playing at the end of the season to hoist that trophy and well also be talking with our espn analysts about making their season predictions and, dan, real quickly, i did an unscientific poll. Who here did not go to sleep last night . [ cheers and applause ] yeah. You were correct. I think that registers in at roughly 100 . Thank you, paula. Cant wait for those predictions coming up. Maybe 98. 5. Thats right, exactly. Also coming up, we should say paula that while youre out on the road, you might want to come back soon because things are going off the rail here in the studio. Look at what sara haines was doing not long ago. This is sara doing the inexplicable. Well explain coming up in pop news. Ron, you missed this because i think you were getting makeup or something. So anyway well explain that in pop news but we di want to start on a serious and rather strange note. Weve got a story about a cold case cracked apparently thanks to a childrens toy. Police in utah say theyve solved a decades old murder with the help of legos. Abcs aditi roy is in our Los Angeles Bureau with more on that. Aditi, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan. Its the fascinating story. Investigators say it took them 23 years to catch a break in this cold case. The gamechanging clues, new dna evidence and lego toys that were found at the crime scene. Investigators say the fingerprints on these colorful play things helped them bring charges finally in a decades long murder. The lego bricks belonging to 78yearold lucille johnsons grandson were found laying on the floor of her home where Authorities Say johnson was hit in the head and strangled to death in 1991. She had many years ahead of her that we were robbed of. Reporter detectives learned from family members that johnson wouldnt just leave her grandkids toys on the floor but the case went cold for decades. I wasnt sure that it ever would be solved. Reporter until last summer when Authorities Say dna found from scrapings under johnsons fingernails match that of john sansing on death row for unrelated murder. Occasionally we run into individuals who are evil. The individual that is being charged with this crime today can only be described as that. Reporter officials believe sansing used his 5yearold son to befriend johnson and her grandchild. Investigators say it was sansings sons fingerprints found on the lego toys placing the child at the murder scene. That young child has been tormented with these visions all these years. Reporter detectives also sansings wife says he admitted to killing an elderly awe tao woman and charged him with murder and her family a step closer to reaching their 23year quest for justice. Its exciting to have answers after all of these years where weve just speculated and never known. Reporter investigators say sansings wife will not be charged. Sansing is currently on death row for murdering a woman in arizona back in 1998. Dan. Such a strange case. Happy that family is getting answers, though. Aditi, thank you. Lets get it back over to ron now for a look at the morning headlines. Good morning once again. Hi again dan and sara. Good morning, everyone. We begin the news with the International Response to the growing terrorist threat posed by the Islamic Extremist Group isis. British officials have raised the threat level in that country to severe, which means that they believe theres the risk of an attack highly unlikely. President obama is trying to reassure americans saying that while the images on tv may look scary with regard to isis, in his words, the world has always been a messy place. And prayers pouring in for comedian joan rivers who is in a medically induced coma in a new york city hospital. Rivers is in serious condition after undergoing after having a cardiac arrest episode during an outpatient procedure. Two volcanoes erupting half a world away from each other. A huge eruption in Papua New Guinea and local communities have been evacuated and flights over that South Pacific nation have been diverted and, meanwhile, in iceland, the latest eruption has not produced significant ash, so european air travel so far has not been affected there. And finally, apparent lyly a scandal brewing or baking in kentucky. Youre looking at a buttermilk pie made by the winning recipe by linda horton. Check this out, judges now investigating the possibility that the crust was actually allegedly store bought, pillsbury crust. No. Store bought. Pillsbury crust. That would be a scandal. Horton submitted all the details of her recipe except for the crust, and now we have word coming in that shes being brought in for questioning. Piece of advice, take the fifth. Even if they reject the pie, i will eat it. I was going to say. The only way to get to the bottom of this is for them to send us the pie and let us eat it. We will test it out. Time now for the weather and meteorologist Stephanie Roberts is back with us from our abc station in sarasota. Good morning to you once again. Good morning. And we have a gorgeous morning here in new york city. An absolutely beautiful sky and a beautiful view there of the World Trade Center from brooklyn. Open in flushing and that nice temperature continues right up the coast, althought we do have some heat and humidity that will start to build in from the west. Today probably the most comfortable day for much of the northeast. The northwest is cool and cloudy, some spotty showers definitely affecting weekend plans there. And the typical afternoon storms firing up across the gulf coast including in sarasota where they are headed to 94 degree this afternoon. We do expect improving conditions across the middle of the country, however, were going to keep the unsettled air for the southeast and the hot and dry conditions with red flag warnings across the desert southwest. Thats whats happening across the country. This Weather Report brought this Weather Report brought to you by bushs baked beans. Dan . Thank you. If youve ever watched College Football, you know these guys. But were talking about the College Football playoffs. Its about time. Oh, we agree. Weve enjoyed the bcs but now that we have a playoff, fans dont understand, well four teams at the end of the year trying to play it out on the field for the National Championship and in the past weve had just two in controversy and messy. Itll still be messy but at least well have four. Might have more controversy when five and six dont get in it. Itll still be messy. Its subjective. How much controversy regarding your early picks for the heisman, guys . Well, this is always fun when we get to pick the heisman in august when, you know, you never know whats going to happen. You have to. I thought Braxton Miller of ohio state before his injury and i changed to brett hunley after Braxton Miller got hurt so i think brett hunley from ucla. I had brett all the time. You read my notes. Brett hunley, ucla. 46 years collectively youve worked together on college gameday. Yes. So with this new playoff, who do you predict will be hoisting that trophy come january 12th, 2015 . Well, i think Florida State, alabama, Michigan State and ucla will be the four. I think Michigan State and ucla will lose so i think the championship game will be Florida State and alabama. Oh, great, good. I take Florida State will be the championship against ucla and im picking ucla for the National Champion. Are you going to stick to that . Im going to stick to it. Youre going to stick to it, all right. And, of course, were here in advance of the big game, number one, Florida State right here on abc at 8 00 eastern, but, coach, you are prepared to make a prediction, are you not . Yes, i am. Who is winning . Im not going to tell you. Are you kidding . You have to watch espn college gameday. Youre not, okay. 9 00 to noon eastern. But ill put it this way, look, look, look. I brought my old helmet just in case. Yeah. So youre going with Florida State. No, but thats the helmet i used when i played. He played in Florida State. Awesome, guys. Well, thank you very much for joining us. We look forward to the call, again, make sure you watch that game, 8 00 eastern, Florida State, number one, taking on Oklahoma State right here on abc and stick around because pop news and sara haines is coming up right here on Good Morning America. vo if you have type 2 diabetes, you may know what its like to deal with high.
